The idea that uni protesters are "elitist ivy-league rich kids larping as revolutionaries" on Twitter and Reddit and even here is so fucking funny to me if you actually know anything about the student bodies at these unis. Take it from someone who's going to one of the biggest private unis in the US, 80% of the peers I know are either from the suburbs or an apartment somewhere in America, children of immigrants, or here on a student visa. I've heard about one-percenter students, but I've never met one in person. Like, don't get me wrong, the institution as a whole is still very privileged and white. I've talked with friends and classmates about feeling weird or dissonant being here and coming from such a different background. But in my art program, I see BIPOC, disabled, queer, lower-income students and faculty trying to deconstruct and tear that down and make space every day. So to take a cursory glance at a crowd of student protesters in coalitions that are led by BIPOC & 1st/2nd-gen immigrant students and HQ'd in ethnic housings and student organizations and say, "ah. children of the elite." Get real.
#also idk how to tell you this but even if it were true. wealthy children potentially sacrificing their educational careers to protest is#a good thing actually. idk how to tell you that caring about people from other nations is good#personal#“this war has nothing to do with most students cuz nobody's getting drafted” idk how to explain to you that we should be angry#that our tuitions of 10s of thousands of dollars that we pay every year for an education is being used to fund a genocidal campaign#also the implication that if you go to a uni institution you are automatically privileged by participation no matter your bg#i didn't /want/ to go to this school. i was supposed to go to a school with an art/animation program. but i realized my immigrant#parents have been working their whole lives to get me here. and turning the opportunity down would be a disservice to their sacrifice#this is getting into convos of “what 2nd gen kids owe their parents” which is different for everyone but. yeah#i just get pissed off at seeing people misrepresenting student bodies as “wealthy” and “privileged” and “elite” when it's such a blatant li#i remember a year ago a friend told me they can't fly home to hong kong for winter break because the plane tickets are too expensive#so they have to find temporary housing around the area#last quarter for a film doc class my film partner made a doc on a small group of marxist grad students from india discussing praxis#during a rally a few months ago in response to police presence the coalition invited palestinian students to speak about their experiences#and lead songs and read poems they wrote. these are STUDENTS. are they elitist too?#this is not to disregard my own personal privilege either.#this whole narrative's just to rationalize a lack of empathy to me. seeing a 19yo student get shot by a rubber bullet and your first#reaction is “HAW! HAW! bet richy rich didn't see THAT coming when she put on her terrorist hood!”#newsflash. these big uni campuses are HAUNTED by the violence of past protests and revolutions and police brutality. we know.#why do you think these coalitions have been making reinforced barricades at record speed

As a Chinese person from Hong Kong I'm going to officially say this absolutely blows my mind. Here's why.
In the video, Charles and Carlos were plainly copying calligraphy stroke-by-stroke from a large image in front of them. What makes Carlos' attempt so impressive is that he's effectively gotten nearly all the proportions, starting and ending brush pressures and tail-offs, and the structure right. It's not perfect. But it's damn well near perfect.
Compare it to Charles': Charles didn't do a bad job at all, and has successfully copied many of the requisite features, but he has seen each stroke as a line, as many people who write Chinese characters with ballpoint pens do nowadays - point A to point B, with natural loss of shape and flow in between. It's not necessarily a problem. Charles is writing the characters. But interestingly, Carlos isn't writing at all.
On rewinding the video you see why Carlos' was shaped so perfectly. He doesn't know Chinese. He doesn't know anything about stroke order, or speed. But he knows detail.
If you look at his hands as he writes he separated each stroke into a shape. Then he did his level best to recreate each shape as carefully as he could by pressing the brush until he could see it formed the right thickness of the line.
He didn't write, like Charles did. He painted.
If this is how good Carlos is at copying a language he does not know I wonder how amazing he would be at painting if he actually spent time to learn.
#For reference I and a lot of other native Chinese dialect speakers and writers do what charles did#we process the characters as words and the strokes as components of that word and sacrifice specific brushtroke shape#it's one of the first things you have to de-learn if you didn't do calligraphy as a child#seriously as a Chinese person from Hong Kong this is the hottest thing Carlos Sainz has ever done I'm in love#f1#carlos sainz#charles leclerc#charlos#chinese gp 2024#my post#I AM YELLING OK#A recurrent mistake that Carlos made was the angle and continuity of the 2nd stroke of 力#that's his only obvious mistake#but the 觉 blows my mind#and the FREAKING LAST STROKE OF THE 星 RADICAL#HOW HE COPIED THE THIN CURVE OF THE FINAL HORIZONTAL STROKE#I AM LOSING IT AT 1:50 AM ON A TUESDAY MARRY ME

I was watching this Chinese variety show just to see Ricky and Zhang Hao but then I saw one of the hosts was Zhang Zhenyuan and now I want to cry… 😭💔
#He... Teens In Times deserve better you know?#I keep trying to accept that this is how China is and C-Pop doesn't need to do anything that K-Pop and J-Pop do but#The more I think about it the more unfair it seems... 😢#These Chinese idols train so much and when they debut they just don't get promoted#They don't releaze anything on YT and they just go to variety shows alone and this is it?#That's unfair! This is not why they trained for!#No wonder there are so many Chinese idols in K-Pop it's like “if you want to debut you have to learn Korean and live in SK”#Which is fine if they like SK but what if they don't want to leave China/Taiwan/Hong Kong?? 😭#Guys there's Chinese idols even in J-Pop nowadays!! They really said “I'd rather debut anywhere but China”!!#Again... not saying these idols don't like Japan. Just that they CAN'T CHOOSE whether they want to debut abroad or in their own country!#Even if C-Pop tries to do a little bit like K or J-Pop (ex.: BOY STORY BOYHOOD WayV and the now dead EXO-M)#Their companies DON'T PROMOTE THEM!!! They literally don't invest any money to promote their groups!!!#I'm still not over Asia Super Young and Loong9 in case you didn't notice... #But... Yeah... I just wish Teens In Times got more rep and that I could just turn my TV on and watch them TOGETHER#And that they had MVs and on YT and etc. (Basically everything I've seen J/K-Pop idols do)#But maybe that's just the K/J-Popper in me and I have to accept that China is China and they owe us nothing#Just because we're interested in East Asian culture doesn't mean they have to all do one thing like the others just to please us!#I will still (try to) stan TNT as much as I can (and as much as they allow me since I speak no Chinese)#Specially ChengXin 🥺 my darling#not kpop or jpop

Broke: Seon-hwa's mother-in-law hated her / blamed her for her son's death / whatever and turned her out of the house after Ssang-min died, which was why Seon-hwa emigrated instead of staying at her in-laws
Woke: Seon-hwa and her mother-in-law had a legitimately good relationship, but she died at some point prior to Seon-hwa leaving Joseon, which meant there were no in-laws left for her to stay with
Bespoke: Seon-hwa and her mother-in-law left Joseon together in a Ruth and Naomi type of situation, and it was only after the madam died in Hong Kong that Seon-hwa was offered the opportunity to move to London by Mr Hardwick, who was there on business
#maybe the madam was Chinese :0#this new development gives me a much more solid reason to have Seon-hwa move to London like that#but it also opens up a different plot hole later in the story mhsjsgxgdg#also British Hong Kong wasn't a thing until 1841 🥴 and this would've happened circa 1836#I have no idea what the British presence was in Hong Kong before the colonial era I'll have to do more research#but we're making progress! (I think) (I think this is progress)#elly's posts#elly writes!#hardwick house

i like how yo-kai watch is in an awkward state of popularity where it's not super popular but it's popular enough to get crossovers with like. final fantasy and sanrio and shit. kind of amusing-
#puppy rambles#yo-kai watch#i think my favorite is how the english version of fantasy life online#and specifically the english version#had a crossover event with y-school heroes-#like. tbf it is level-5 doing a crossover with another property#what gets me is that y-school heroes has only released in japan and like. probably taiwan and hong kong idk-#and yet i'm like 99% sure the crossover was specifically in the english version of flo

"pro democracy" democracy is when you support a rapist and protests that wanted to balkanize an entire country. otherwise ur right lol.
yeah that is definitely why AAA Game Studio & Publisher Blizzard-Activision banned a Hearthstone player and punished the two commentators who just so happened to fucking be there for saying 'Liberate Hong Kong'. Bobby Kotick just really hates balkanization and definitely hates rapists. your brain is huge buddy.
#i freely admit i was being glib and reductionist about the Blitzchung situation in my post about why a video game i used to like sucks now#I'm not going to pretend to understand all the nuances of the Hong Kong's situation but this seems every bit as reductionist as what i said#More importantly: Blizz didn't do it because they give a shit. They did it to keep their products from being blocked from sale in China.#missing the core point of my dumb post about a shitty video game: those with power don't give a fuck.

I would like to state for the record that I love and respect the librarians at my uni so if they decide to strike me down for requesting approximately 50 books--like half of those via Interlibrary Loan--in the course of the past of 2 hours, that is their right
#to add insult to injury today is TECHNICALLY the first day of campus being shut down for winter break#met the ILL librarian for the first time in September and she was like 'oh YOU'RE Prof. [Queenie]!'#yeah sorry about the constant crimes I am doing. can you find this extremely niche DVD published in Hong Kong in 1997 tho#Queenie actually says something on this blog#what is my academic life#before you decide to come at me like 'libraries are meant to be used!' yes I know. I in fact grew up in public libraries#my first move whenever arriving at a new academic institution is to try to ingratiate myself with the librarians#but some things probably need an apology attached (I did write several 'do not stress if you can't find this' notes in my ILL requests)
