Kind of frustrating that every single trans masc and/or butch book I read always features a lead character who just happens to have a lean build (with enough muscle to make them attractive), angular features (sharp jaw, strong arms, aquiline nose) and a naturally "boyish" look. Their dysphoria, if any, almost always revolves around clothing, names and hair instead. Their revelation or self discovery moment is always smooth and easy– a haircut, usually, or wearing different clothing. They are inherently hot and casually masculine.
I find it almost impossible to relate to these types of masc and butch characters. I would love to read a book that actually includes butches of a different body type, who are NOT the token diverse side characters, but actually the mc.
Butches and mascs of color, from cultures that prohibit/restrict certain forms of gender expression. More importantly, people who don't have the body type, the features, the subtle stereotypical coding that is considered the norm for "true butch" even among supposedly proud and progressive LGBT circles. People who do not have what is considered androgynous features, who don't have "gender", the kind Tumblr appreciates in fictional characters with cool designs and outfits. Trans masc and butch folk who don't "pass" and would not be considered good rep by a lot of twitter gays, because they aren't effortlessly "attractive" or "true" to their identity.
