What are the benefits of hard sole shoes vs. soft-sole shoes for rock climbing?
Hard-sole shoes and soft-sole shoes have different advantages and disadvantages for rock climbing.
Hard sole shoes, also known as “rock shoes” or “climbing shoes” have a stiff and durable soles, made out of rubber or other synthetic materials. They are designed to provide a high level of sensitivity and precision on small holds and edges, allowing climbers to feel the surface of the rock and to be able to place their feet more accurately. Hard sole shoes also tend to have a downturned shape, which allows the climber to pull down on the shoe, increasing the power of their footwork.
Soft sole shoes, also known as “approach shoes” are designed for hiking to the climbing area and for walking around on the rock. They have a more flexible and comfortable sole and often have a more durable upper, allowing the climber to walk comfortably for long periods of time. Soft-sole shoes also tend to have a flatter shape, making them more comfortable for walking and scrambling.
Hard-sole shoes are generally recommended for more difficult and technical climbing routes, while soft-sole shoes are more suitable for easier routes and approaches. However, many climbers choose to wear hard sole shoes even on easier routes, as they provide more precision and control over the footwork. Some climbers also use a combination of both hard and soft-sole shoes, switching between them depending on the type of climbing they are doing.
