Authoritarian prime minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary visited former president Trump in Florida on Friday, and on Sunday, Orbán assured Hungarian state media that Trump “will not give a penny in the Ukraine-Russia war. Therefore, the war will end, because it is obvious that Ukraine can not stand on its own feet.” Russian state media gloated at the news, and that Trump’s MAGA allies in Congress are already helping him end support for Ukraine. 

President Joe Biden and a strong majority of lawmakers in both chambers of Congress, as well as defense officials, support appropriating more aid to Ukraine, believing its defense is crucial to America’s national security. Today, Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin once again called such aid “critical.” 

The Senate passed a national security supplemental bill early in the morning on February 13, by a strong bipartisan vote of 70 to 29. The bill would be expected to pass the House, but House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), a Trump loyalist, refuses to bring it up for a vote. 

Trump loyalists have been obstructing aid to Ukraine since President Joe Biden asked for it in October 2023. Their insistence that they would not address the national security needs of the U.S. in Ukraine until they were addressed at the border now sure looks like a smokescreen to help Russian president Vladimir Putin take Ukraine, a plan that would explain why Trump urged Republicans to kill the national security supplemental bill even when it included a strong border component that favored Republican positions. 

It appears as though Trump is deliberately undermining the national security of the United States.

In excerpts from his forthcoming book that appeared on the CNN website today, journalist Jim Sciutto reported conversations with Trump’s second chief of staff, General John Kelly, and Trump’s third national security advisor, John Bolton, in which the men recounted Trump’s fondness for dictators. “He views himself as a big guy,” Bolton told Sciutto. “He likes dealing with other big guys, and big guys like Erdogan in Turkey get to put people in jail and you don’t have to ask anybody’s permission. He kind of likes that.” “He’s not a tough guy by any means, but in fact quite the opposite,” Kelly said. “But that’s how he envisions himself.”

Kelly noted that Trump praised Hitler and what he thought was the loyalty of Hitler’s generals (some of whom actually tried to assassinate him), but both Kelly and Bolton noted that he “most consistently lavished praise on Russian President Vladimir Putin.” Certainly, Trump prizes loyalty to himself: today Alex Isenstadt of Politico reported a “bloodbath” at the Republican National Committee as the incoming Trump loyalists are pushing out more than 60 RNC officials and staffers to make sure everyone is “aligned” with Trump. 

An exclusive interview today by Katelyn Polantz, Kaitlan Collins, and Jeremy Herb of CNN revealed that Brian Butler, who worked at Mar-a-Lago for twenty years, has come forward to give the public the same information he told to investigators looking into Trump’s theft of classified documents. On June 3, 2022, the day Trump and his family were scheduled to fly to New Jersey for the summer, Trump’s aide Walt Nauta asked Butler if he could borrow a car from the Mar-a-Lago car service, although Butler and his valets usually handled getting the Trump family luggage onto the plane. June 3 was the same day Trump and his lawyer were meeting with officials from the Department of Justice at Mar-a-Lago to arrange for Trump to turn over national security documents. 

Butler loaded a vehicle with the luggage, then met Nauta and Mar-a-Lago property manager Carlos De Oliveira—at the time a close friend of Butler—driving a vehicle loaded with bankers boxes, at the West Palm Beach airport. Butler says he didn’t know the bankers boxes contained anything unusual, and he helped Nauta load the plane with the boxes as well as the luggage. “They were the boxes that were in the indictment, the white bankers boxes. That’s what I remember loading,” Butler added.

Butler was also present during conversations about hiding evidence from federal authorities. 

While Trump opposes aid to Ukraine, President Joe Biden pushed for it once again when he released his fiscal year 2025 budget today. (There is overlap this year between funding fiscal year 2024 and fiscal year 2025 because House Republicans have been unable to agree to last year’s appropriations bills. Those are supposed to be done before October 1, when the new fiscal year starts.)

In addition to funding for Ukraine, the president’s $7.3 trillion budget covers Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans’ benefits, all of which are mandatory, and expands investment in health care, child care, and housing. Biden would pay for all this—and reduce the deficit by $3 trillion over the next ten years—with higher taxes on those making more than $400,000 a year and on corporations. 

In his defense of the middle class as the engine of economic growth and his declaration that the days of trickle-down economics are over, Biden sounds much like Democratic president Franklin Delano Roosevelt did when he ushered in the New Deal in the 1930s. In that era, Roosevelt and his Democratic allies replaced a government that worked for men of property with one that worked for ordinary Americans.

There were other echoes of the FDR administration today as Trump’s undermining of aid to Ukraine has become clear. Ukraine stands between an aggressive Russian dictator and a democratic Europe.  

In the 1930s and 1940s, the U.S. had to decide whether to turn away from those standing against dictators like Hitler, or to stand behind them. There was a strong isolationist impulse in the United States. Some people resented that war industries had made fortunes supplying the devastating weaponry of World War I. Others believed that Hitler’s advance in Europe was a distraction from Asia, where their business interests were entwined. Congress passed laws to keep the U.S. from entanglement in Europe until Germany invaded Poland in 1939. Then Congress allowed other nations to buy munitions from the U.S. so long as they carried them away in their own ships.  

The following year, FDR promised the American people he would not send troops into “any foreign wars.” But in July 1940, newly-appointed British prime minister Winston Churchill asked the U.S. for direct help after Britain lost eleven destroyers in ten days to the German Navy. Roosevelt exchanged 50 destroyers for 99-year leases on certain British bases, but that would not be enough. He asked Congress to provide military aid.

On this date in 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law “An Act to Promote the Defense of the United States.” The new law gave the president wide-ranging authority to sell, give, lease, or lend war supplies to “any country whose defense the President deems vital to the defense of the United States.”

The law defined “war supplies” generously: they ranged from aircraft and boats to guns and tools, to information and technical designs, to food and supplies. The law also gave the president authority to authorize U.S. companies to manufacture such war supplies for other countries whose defense was important to the United States.

This law is the one we know as the Lend-Lease Act, and it was central to the ability of the Allied Powers—those standing against Hitler, Mussolini, and Hirohito—to fight off the Axis Powers who were trying to take over the globe in the 1940s. By the time the law ended on September 20, 1945, supplies worth more than $50 billion in 1940 dollars—equivalent to more than $770 billion today—had gone to the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, France, China, and other allies. 

Four days after he signed the Lend-Lease Act into law, on March 15, 1941, FDR told journalists at the White House Correspondents’ Association, “The big news story of this week is this: The world has been told that we, as a united Nation, realize the danger that confronts us—and that to meet that danger, our democracy has gone into action.”

FDR noted the “superb morale” of the British, who he said were “completely clear in their minds about the one essential fact—that they would rather die…free…than live as slaves.” He continued: “The British people and their Grecian allies need ships. From America, they will get ships. They need planes. From America, they will get planes. From America they need food. From America, they will get food. They need tanks and guns and ammunition and supplies of all kinds. From America, they will get tanks and guns and ammunition and supplies of all kinds….

“And so our country is going to be what our people have proclaimed it must be—the arsenal of democracy…. Never, in all our history, have Americans faced a job so well worth while.”

'Whack Job': Here's Where Trump's Would-Be Assassin Gave Everyone the Creeps

We knew this was coming, folks: everyone and their mother, through numerous agencies, knew about Ryan Wesley Routh, the wannabe Trump assassin who tried to pull a ‘Grassy Knoll’-like attack on Trump over the weekend. Routh hid in a shrubbery along Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, for 12 hours; he had a rifle with a scope and a GoPro. He wasn’t hunting groundhogs.

The Secret Service got lucky, as they didn’t sweep the course before Trump’s arrival, instead securing holes ahead of the former president as he played. An agent scouting the perimeter of the course saw a barrel and opened fire, causing Routh to flee. An eyewitness photo of him and the car he fled the scene in led to his arrest by police later. 

We learned that the FBI knew about him in 2019, stemming from an illegal firearm possession case. The Wall Street Journal has a lengthy piece about how numerous people who encountered Routh were unnerved by him and his antisocial tendencies, warning higher-ups about this individual. In short, US authorities were warned multiple times about Routh. Still, first, Larry Provost had an excellent piece about an ex-CIA targeting officer who gave Townhall information about her read on Mr. Routh:

In information shared with Townhall.com, Sarah Adams, a former CIA targeter and intelligence analyst, shared a Be On The Lookout warning (BOLO) from June 2, 2023 warning of criminal activities by Ryan Routh.  The information in Ms. Adams’ BOLO was, according to her, even reported to the U.S. government, specifically the Department of State.    The BOLO is partially reprinted below:  "📢 Important Announcement 📢 🚫 BOLO 🚫  "Beware of American Ryan Routh. Reports indicate that he is leading a human trafficking scheme. He is instructing Afghans to travel illegally to Iran with the promise they will link up eventually with the Ukrainian legion to fight. This is a fraud as NO official pathway exists for this from the Ukrainian Government for our allies in Afghanistan. Also, despite promised funding support it has not come to fruition and he has abandoned Afghans illegally in Iran.  […] Ms. Adams was author of the BOLO, which was sent out to a number of humanitarian groups connected to helping Ukrainians after the Russian reinvasion of February 24, 2022, as well as groups assisting Afghans who had previously assisted the United States during the 20-year War in Afghanistan.  Ms. Adams’ BOLO continued and shared Routh’s website, social media that included a LinkedIn page as well as then Twitter/now X account, and his regular phone number, that Routh apparently used across various platforms to include Signal, WhatsApp and Viber.   (Townhall has specifically omitted this information)  The BOLO was received and Mr. Routh was known to be ostracized by several leaders in the Ukrainian humanitarian community.

And now, The Wall Street Journal with the follow, which also featured Adams, who rightly called Routh a “whack job”:

…it was Routh’s time in Ukraine, where he traveled shortly after the Russian invasion in 2022 hoping to join the fight, where his tumultuous life full of failures and brushes with the law seemed to spiral further downward—and to alarm those who came in contact with him.  Chelsea Walsh, a nurse who had several encounters with Routh in Kyiv in 2022, said his threats of violence worried her so much that she conveyed her concerns to a Customs and Border Protection officer in an hourlong interview at Washington’s Dulles airport in June 2022.  Walsh told the officer during the interview, which took place after she returned to the U.S., that Routh was among the most dangerous Americans she met during her month-and-a-half-long stint in Ukraine.  She showed the officer a notebook listing more than dozen names of Americans and others whose actions had alarmed her, she recounted. Under the heading “Overall Predatory Behavior (or antisocial traits)” were four names. Routh’s was at the top.  Customs and Border Protection didn’t immediately respond to inquiries about the meeting.  Routh’s behavior had been flagged to the FBI in the past, though not in connection to Ukraine. A tipster told the FBI in 2019 that Routh had a firearm despite being a felon, but when questioned further wouldn’t verify providing the information, an FBI official said Monday. The bureau passed the information onto authorities in Honolulu, where Routh was living at the time, and closed the investigation.  His activities related to Ukraine brought him to the attention of a large group of people, many of whom quickly grew suspicious.  Routh was well known among volunteer aid groups in Ukraine as a “fraudster” and “kind of a whack job,” said Sarah Adams, a former CIA officer who helped run a network that linked 50 aid groups to share information and coordinate humanitarian and volunteer efforts. He claimed to be working with the Ukrainian government to recruit foreign fighters but wasn’t, she said. 

The media also knew about Routh, with The New York Times and Semafor interviewing him for pieces about his Ukraine activities, where he reportedly met with government officials. What do they have to say if there were any meetings at all?

Intense rainfall and 'potentially life-threatening flooding' have struck South Florida, leading the governor to issue an emergency declaration.

Numerous communities throughout South Florida, including the Miami and Fort Lauderdale areas, experienced flooding on Wednesday due to heavy rainfall, prompting the governor to declare a state of emergency and leaving drivers stranded across the region.

The National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for parts of Broward, Miami-Dade, Collier, and Hendry counties until Thursday morning, cautioning of ongoing "life-threatening flooding." Flood watches have also been extended for Miami and Fort Lauderdale until Friday evening.

Climate and Average Weather Year Round in Nebraska:

"Numerous areas are submerged with stalled vehicles, and additional rainfall is anticipated," the weather service warned on Wednesday night. "If feasible, avoid traveling on the roads."

Social media footage depicted water levels rising to the windows of vehicles and inundating parking decks and neighborhood streets.

In Miami, videos showed cars stranded with most of their bodies submerged under water, marking the second consecutive day the city has grappled with flooding issues. Tuesday's storms dumped 2 to 5 inches of rain, flooding streets.

In Hallandale Beach, where footage captured a man kayaking among cars in flooded areas, officials advised residents to shelter in place and avoid traveling through the water.

Officials in Hallandale Beach reported a family briefly lost their son during the storm, but local police successfully reunited them.

A woman, delayed for five hours on Hallandale Beach Boulevard and US Route 1 due to flooding, described intersections without power, stalled cars, and abandoned vehicles. Hollywood resident Kait Madrigal recounted to CNN, "I’ve never seen it like that."

In addition to heavy rainfall, a storm system on Wednesday spawned an EF1 tornado in Hobe Sound, Martin County, about 35 miles north of West Palm Beach, confirmed by a National Weather Service damage survey.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for Broward, Collier, Lee, Miami-Dade, and Sarasota counties, citing severe rain and flooding that has impacted critical infrastructure, including major interstates, roads, schools, and airports.

While Florida is accustomed to heavy rain, these events are becoming more intense due to global warming caused by fossil fuel emissions. The frequent daily downpours are further intensified by a continuous flow of tropical moisture from the Caribbean, directed straight into South Florida along a frontal boundary draped across the state.

Over the remainder of the work week, several additional inches of rain are forecast from a broad, disorganized area of storms stalled over the region. By late week, the National Hurricane Center indicates a slight possibility that these storms could organize into the first tropical depression of the hurricane season as they move off the Southeast coast.

Rainfall totals in excess of ten inches are expected in parts of Florida by Friday, with some areas in southwest Florida potentially nearing 20 inches. The southwest Gulf Coast, spanning from Sarasota to Everglades National Park, faces the highest risk of receiving 10 inches or more of rainfall.

Localized heavy rain outside of these areas could trigger flash flooding, particularly in urban or poorly drained areas. Flood watches are currently active for over 8 million people in South Florida from Wednesday through Thursday night at the earliest.

Moisture from the Gulf of Mexico continues to pour over South Florida, prompting the Weather Prediction Center to issue a level 2 out of 4 flood threat for Wednesday night, Thursday, and Friday. An additional 3 to 6 inches of rainfall is anticipated across Southeastern Florida, including Miami and Fort Lauderdale, through Friday. Some parts of South Florida may accumulate over a foot of rain, which exceeds typical monthly to several months' worth of precipitation.

Throughout the week, the flood risk will escalate as successive storms pour heavy rain over the same area day after day. This persistent rainfall will cause cumulative precipitation totals to rise, saturating soils and swelling local waterways.

One potential silver lining is that this rain will provide much-needed relief to areas currently grappling with drought. According to the US Drought Monitor, half of Florida is currently experiencing abnormal dryness or drought conditions, with the most severe drought centered precisely where the heaviest rain is expected to fall.

The moisture driving this week's storms originates from a robust gyre that typically gathers over the Caribbean Sea and southern Gulf of Mexico during this season. Known as the Central American gyre, this large, disorganized system of showers and thunderstorms rotates over Central America and adjacent waters.

The gyre's expansive circulation and abundant moisture can facilitate the development of tropical systems in various regions, including the Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico, and even the far eastern Pacific. However, current upper-level wind conditions, known as wind shear, are too disruptive for tropical systems to form in these areas at present, as noted by Jon Rizzo, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Key West, Florida.

Despite the warm waters in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, favorable conditions for tropical system formation hinge on the alignment of various factors, including wind patterns and sea surface temperatures.

The gyre is enhancing the wet weather along the Gulf Coast, which Florida will experience throughout this week.

"The formation of the Central American gyre signifies that summer has arrived and the rainy season is starting," said Jon Rizzo, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Key West, Florida, speaking to CNN.
