On this day in 1917 a shot grazed The Red Baron's head at Wervicq

it gave him headache's afterwards. One wonders if this wound played a role in his demise a year later.

Wervik/Wervicq straddles the French/Belgian border. MvR was cared for in the Sint-Niklaas hospital in Kortrijk (Courtrai). The hospital no longer exists.

15 September 1917. The prototype Fokker Triplane F.1 102/17 was shot down by British flying ace Norman Miers MacGregor flying a Sopwith Camel near Wervik, Belgium. The Fokker pilot, Oberleutnant Kurt Wolff, was killed.

Hoe kwam Wervik aan zijn naam?

Wat betekent die naam ‘Viroviacum’? Waar en hoe en wanneer is de naam van Wervik ontstaan? Lokaal vind ik niets. Gissingen en niet veel meer. De zaak houden me dagen bezig.
