IF A BASSIST REPRESENTED THE NETHERLANDS AT THE UNITED NATIONS GIG OF HARDCORE PUNK.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on the late, great Tony Slug (real name: Tony Leeuwenburgh), bassist of Amsterdam-based hardcore punk band BGK (BALTHASAR GERARDS KOMMANDO), performing live on August 10, 1984 at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA, ('twas a Goldenvoice show).
OVERVIEW: "B.G.K represented The Netherlands at the legendary 1984 International show at the Olympics during the Los Angeles Olympics. This was such a great show. There seemed to be WAY less problems with the police this night. I think it was because they were all being used for securing the LA Olympics that year."

AN ALBUM PUSHEAD ONCE REFERRED TO AS "ANCIENT" BECAUSE OF HOW LATE IT WAS RELEASED.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on the "Negative FX LP," the self-titled debut album by Boston hardcore punk band NEGATIVE FX. The album was recorded from April-November 1982 but wasn't released by Taang! Records until 1984. Photos from the collection of Cooch of the @hardcorearchaeologist.
BONUS PIC INFO: Spotlight on a shot of Choke and guitarist Pat Ratferty of NEGATIVE FX taken by Corey White at a gig with BAD BRAINS and GANGGREEN from McNasty's in the Fenway (Boston) on May 2, 1982.
REVIEW: "Even though this is ancient material from a band long gone, it is representative of one of Boston’s finest outfits at its time. Holding the distinct Boston characteristics heard in GANG GREEN, SSD, DYS, and more, NEGATIVE FX packed strong musical combustion with hoarse vocal deliveries. Rapid, powerful, and totally enjoyable, NFX is a classic Boston band but this should have come out at its time before all the duplications arose."

TULSA, OKLAHOMA HARDCORE PUNK -- WELCOME TO 1984.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on sleeve art and typed lyric sheet for the "Moscow" EP by Tulsa, OK hardcore punk band N.O.T.A., a.k.a., NONE OF THE ABOVE, released on Unclean Records in 1984.
MINI-REVIEW: "A long overdue vinyl release from these Sooners, one that fully demonstrates their power and punch. This is a four-songer with fast and medium thrash, all of which hits you right in the gut. Let there be more!"

"IT INCORPORATED ELEMENTS FROM SO MANY GENRES: HARDCORE PUNK, HEAVY METAL, GLAM, THRASH, INDUSTRIAL, AND EXPERIMENTAL."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on an original 1983/1984? Dogma Records pressing of "Detestation," the now hallowed debut LP by Japanese hardcore punk/heavy metal/metal punk band G.I.S.M.
OVERVIEW: "To say "Destestation" was ahead of its time would be a huge understatement -- it incorporated elements from so many genres: hardcore, punk, heavy metal, glam, thrash, industrial, and experimental. It was almost as if listeners didn’t know what to do with the record’s music but gravitated to it nonetheless as they recognized it was something unique and special.
Maximum Rocknroll’s Jay Bentley’s 1984 review of "Detestation" made that sentiment clear, describing the record as:
"Churning Metal-punk, or perhaps even speed-metal, depending on where you draw the distinction. G.I.S.M. are undoubtedly a heavy metal band who've been heavily influenced by hardcore, but the music is so intense and the vocals so ominous that even I'm in a state of shock. These guys make VENOM sound like THE KNACK, especially on side 1."
-- BANDCAMP (GISM official bandcamp)
“No band does what GISM does or shocks like GISM can. That kind of brilliance people call insane."
-- Brian "Pushead" Schroeder in Puszone, "Maximum Rocknroll," c. August 1987
