Just rebloged that “solarpunk community center” art and now I’m thinking a Solarpunk Community Center. Like, how cool would it be? I wonder what they would have inside? Definitely some eco friendly arts and crafts inside. Maybe some stuff to make paper? For people who want to like, restock the paper used for the arts and crafts (maybe there’s an area where people can bring in their paper scraps and they use that to make the new paper?) maybe a little area for workshops to cycle throughout the week/month like in a library. I can totally see a day where someone comes in to teach people how to make paint and ink from plants and rocks (mostly paint from rocks). Maybe they would also have some toys made out of cloth and wood for the younger kids and like, maybe a little daycare like area? Board games for the older kids and adults, an area to work on computers and study, maybe an area that’s like a lounge/commons room? And definitely an area to fix things, like your clothes and electronics. Maybe they even have a little kitchen area for people to come and go with food and drinks. Idk I never actually been to a community center before 😅
Oh totally!! I think a community hub becomes something entirely different we see all over the place once most places becomes third spaces.
Like they could be a cafe/public kitchen/food distribution space, they could just be a neighborhood library with all the organizational stuff. It could be an event center. It's amazing to think about!
The community center near me, which is actually holding a vollunteer thank you tea today (but it's-35 and I don't wanna take a baby in that) but here's some of the services they already do so you should find the nearest community center and see what they got:
Little library/pantry/blockbuster outside
Fresh veg/fruit drop off is boxes for 35$ from local farmers
Game night - weekly until end of winter (mostly board games)
Movie nights - adult and kid ones (with snacks)
Free ice skating/garden plot when you get a membership
Jellybean dances
It's also got a pub in the basement where they sell a local beer primarily and have pool/darts/other pub games
A shared free circular store where ppl donate stuff and anyone can come and pick up whatever (lots of books/toys/clothes but also dishes and other stuff!)
Yoga, Dodgeball, and kids music classes
And hopefully next year a communal kitchen and girl guide meetings once the halls renos are done!!

Dead phone 📱
Craig Poole x fem!reader
Movie: Mr. Harrigan’s phone
Part 7
𓈒 ﹒ ☆ 𓂂 ˚ ☆ ꙳ * ࣭ ࣭
Today was Mr. Harrigan’s funeral, Craig spent all weekend working on the obituary and once Craig read it to me I found it lovely even under the circumstances“Craig you are going to be an amazing screen writer some day and I’m sure Mr. Harrigan would be proud of you, we all are” once I said that you could see the tears in his eyes and he got up and cried into my shoulder.
Craig and I had a few good cries, we both missed Mr. Harrigan, Craig and little more than me but Mr. Harrigan was there for me when my mom and I were having problems. Once we get to the church it was sad, not many people came to the funeral only about 13 people, sad cause Mr. Harrigan may have not been the great man but he was royal. But there was no family not even a niece for a second cousin he never married never had kids probably one of the reasons Craig Dad was leery about him going up there in first place.
𓈒 ﹒ ☆ 𓂂 ˚ ☆ ꙳ * ࣭ ࣭
Craigs POV
Reverend Mooney was to conduct the service and I was to read my eulogy and read from the bible.
“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you with all malice. And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God, for Christ’s sake, hath forgiven you.”
I look around the room and see Edna, smiling, and nodding at me. I saw some of the business types exchange looks at that, as well, Mr. Harrigan hadn’t shown them a great deal of kindness, or much in that way of forgiveness either. I go and sit down in between Y/n and my dad as the funeral goes on.
People are in a line saying there final good byes “Wanna take a last look?” Dad asked me and Y/n. She shook her head no “I wanna wait. I wanna be last.” Y/n and dad nod there heads
“Take your time. We’ll meet you outside.” They stand up and dad walks out, Y/n stands beside me and leans down puts her hand on the back of my neck and kiss my head, then pulls away I stand up and she gives me a hug
“I’ll meet you outside, okay?” She whispered, I nod my head then she pulls away and walk towards the door to meet my dad outside. I walked to the back of the line with only two people in front of me. One of the guys is on his phone while the other looks down at Mr. Harrigan.
I walk up closer to the casket looking down at his body.
He was wearing a suit, I’d never seen before, and the funeral guy had roughed him up a bit so he’d look healthy, except healthy people don’t lie in coffins with their eyes shut.
I look around to make sure no one is there before taking Mr. Harrigan’s phone out of my pocket and placing in in his suits inner pocket then take some lint of his tie, before hearing shuffling behind me you only had to look at his black suit and white carnation to know he was the funeral parlour guy I suppose it was his job to close the lid of the coffin and make sure it was latched down tight a tear of death came over me at the side of him, and I was glad to leave that place and go to the sunshine and that sunshine was, Y/n
𓈒 ﹒ ☆ 𓂂 ˚ ☆ ꙳ * ࣭ ࣭
It was finally time for the interment of the casket and reverend Mooney decide to speak this time. “Many, who’ve come from far and wide, respected John’s…”
Mr. Harrigan was buried very near my mother. And not to far from Y/n’s father. I’d only been to her grave once. Dad visited her weekly, but I stayed away. I guess because if I did visit…I’d know she was gone forever.
“John Harrigan was a tough shell to crack, but I knew he was a fair man. I wonder if he’d be surprised that people showed up today.” Reverend Mooney finished and patted the coffin.
After a few moments of silence Dad, Y/n, I started walking to the truck when we got stopped “Excuse me. You’re Craig and Y/n, right?” Y/n and I looked at each other then back at the man.
“I’m Chick Rafferty. I handle…handled John Harrigan’s finances. I was hoping to have a quick chat. It concerns you having something of Mr. Harrigan’s.”
“Um…” “Uh…I…” Y/n and I chuckle nervously, we look at my dad and he looks back at us concerned “You should hear from his lawyers in a week or so.” Mr. Rafferty said looking at the both of us “Are we in trouble?” Y/n asked and dad stops before this goes any further “Yeah. What is this about?”
“Don’t worry. It’s a good thing.” The man gives us a polite smile and pulls out to envelopes out of his coat “Well, these should explain it all. I received it two months ago and was instructed to hold it until such an occasions as this.” Mr. Rafferty looked at us all and smiled “Well, have a good day.”
He walks away I look down at the letter in my hand, Y/n grabs my hands and slides it in hers and we start to walk to the car. We get to the truck with Y/n in the middle of my dad and I, as we buckle up our belts dad looks at us with a smile. So I look down then back at him.
“What?” I asked him, Y/n then turns to my dad confused “I think you guys might be in the will.” Dad said hopefully I look down at the letter “Should I open it now?” I said with optimism, he shrugged.
Y/n and I grab our letters and open them and dad starts driving home we read them aloud.
“Craig and or Y/n, if you’re reading this, I’ve died. I have you both with $800,000 in trust.” Dad look at us both in shock “The trustees are your father and Charles Rafferty. My business manager will now serve as my executor. I calculated the sum should be sufficient to see you through four years of college…and any postgraduate work you may choose. Enough should remain to give you a start in your chosen career. Craig you spoke of screenwriting and I heard Y/n take about being a director, and if it’s what you want, then, of course, you must pursue it but know that I do not approve. There is a vulgar joke about screenwriters. I will not repeat it here, but by all means, find it on your phones. Keywords “screenwriter” and “starlet” films are ephemera, while books, good ones, are eternal or close to it. You have read me many good ones, but others are waiting to be written. This is all I will say. Even with school expenses, your $800,000 may grow to a million or more by the time you reach the age of 26, when the trust will expire, and you can spend or invest the rest as you choose. PS. I will miss our afternoons together too.”
Y/n and I look at each in shock at the last sentence and I pull out my phone and go into Mr. Harrigan’s and I conversation and seeing the message I sent him last night.
Dad looks at both of us “What is it? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

When Is the Right Time to Schedule Pool Maintenance Service?
Simply having a swimming pool at home is not enough. You will have to take good care of it. So better search for pool maintenance in Boca Raton to get expert help. After all, you will have to balance the chemical composition and do a lot of other things. So it would be better to find an expert for help. Chapter One
Word Count: 1,936
Warnings: Maybe mild language (I forget), tiny bit of violence (it isn’t described besides a bruise/mark and hinting), government people and maybe some politics (?).
Alright, this one’s three and a half weeks behind schedule, but who cares. It’s done now. So far the only criticism I’ve gotten on this one is that the dialogue in the beginning is too long and the ending is too short, so I’ll try to fix that next time. :)
Lonie enjoyed listening to Florette whistle in the morning. It was a nice, peaceful way to wake up, especially because the alternative would be a loud alarm. Today, even though it was summer, Florette was whistling a Christmas song, but Léonie didn’t mind. It still made her happy.
The room’s large windows gave the two of them a wonderful view of the lake. That was the one good thing about waking so early in the morning: everything was calm and quiet. The dim light from the moon lit the room more than their weak ceiling light ever could. A few birds sang and flew past the window.
“Good morning, Florette,” Léonie turned over and looked down from her top bunk. Florette was stretching on the floor, as she had done every morning for almost three years.
“Mornin’,” she replied.
“How did you sleep?”
“Not as well as I could’ve.”
“That is too bad,” Léonie laid on her back and looked to the ceiling. She hardly had any wall space next to her bunk, so she had resorted to decorating the ceiling.
Ms. LaPore had only allowed the volunteers to take objects home from their missions that could fit in a tiny plastic bag. This resulted in the volunteers having an unusual amount of posters and short books and not clothes or larger objects. Léonie’s ceiling was mostly covered by old movie posters and magazine covers, plus several postcards.
“We’ve gotta hurry up,” Florette tied her shoelaces, “The meeting’s early.”
“I am aware,” Léonie scooted to the end of her bed and jumped down, “Did you read over your folder?”
“Nope. I’ll do that during breakfast,” Florette said. Léonie sighed.
Léonie walked over to her dresser and pulled out her uniform: a grey shirt, black pants, and simple white shoes. She had been instructed to wear her name badge this time, so she pinned it on her shirt.
“Why don’t you wear a dress or something,” Florette was sitting on the lower bunk now, watching a deer walk in front of the window.
“I am not supposed to.” It was only then Léonie realized Florette was not completely in uniform. She was wearing a dark green flannel over her shirt and her socks were pink. Florette’s hair was in two buns, which was against Assembly policies.
“Take those off, Florette,” Léonie put her own white socks on, “and change your hair.”
“I’m going to wear my hair however I want.”
“You will be in trouble.”
“I wasn’t last time.”
“Last time, Mr. Steinberg interrupted Ms. LaPore as she was trying to discipline you. That was simply luck,” Léonie put her final shoe on and began making her bed before it was time for breakfast.
“Whatever,” Florette mumbled, laying on her back, “I don’t care.”
Léonie shook her head and sat down on the rocking chair next to the window. She picked up the book she was currently reading and opened it to the page she had bookmarked. Léonie had read Aesop’s Fables innumerous times now, but it was one of the only books she had and she didn’t want to bother Mr. Johnson for any new ones.
Within five minutes of Léonie sitting down, there was a knock on their door. Florette opened it, revealing Reese on the other side.
“Breakfast’s ready,” she said, “I wouldn’t get too excited about it, though.”
“What is it?” Florette asked.
“Water and toast. There isn’t any butter or jam, either,” Reese said.
Florette groaned and walked past Reese.
“At least it is something,” Léonie said as she exited the room. Reese shut the door behind them.
Breakfast was held in the kitchen of the main house. The main house, which was owned by Mr. Steinberg, was a large, brick building from the early 1900s. It had seven bedrooms, all of which were converted to offices, a large basement, and multiple repurposed living rooms. It also had a nice conservatory, which Mr. Steinberg and, occasionally, Danilo spent time in. The main house and the volunteer’s guesthouse were separated by a large yard, forested area, and pool.
Danilo met the tree of them in the hallways and, together, they grabbed their folders and began walking to breakfast.
“How did you sleep?” Léonie asked.
“Fine.”
“Bene.”
“That’s good.” Léonie said.
The smell of fresh grass wafted past them. The yard had been cut recently, probably for the officials who were visiting. A pool boy was taking the leaves that had fallen out of the pool and another was cleaning the stone.
As the volunteers neared the house, they could see a large group of men in suits and women in nice dresses crowded in the conservatory. Others were viewable through the windows and glass door.
“What the crap is going on here?” Florette said.
“Did you not read the stuff in your folder?” Reese asked.
“No.”
“Oh my God, you idiot.”
“If I read this stuff,” Florette motioned to her folder, “would I know who those people are?”
“Duh!”
Danilo shushed the two women as the glass doors opened in front of them.
“Volunteers, I need to speak to you in the kitchen,” Ms. LaPore whispered almost immediately after they stepped into the house. She examined their appearances quickly, before stopping at Florette, “Especially you, Travere.”
The volunteers made their way to the kitchen. It was noticeably quieter, and colder, than the entryway. The only person in the room was a maid, who was cleaning the metal counters. The room was all white except for the metal counters, which had dark red details, appliances, and chairs. There was a plant in the corner and a chalkboard, but otherwise, the room was empty.
“You’re late,” Ms. LaPore snapped, her anger visible on her face. Her red dress and black heels seemed to match to her mood perfectly, “I don’t tolerate late volunteers.”
“I’m sorry, ma’am, but it took a while to.. find our uniforms,” Reese said.
“Really? All of you had trouble finding one of your three pairs of uniforms?” Ms. LaPore asked, then she turned to Florette, “I see Travere he-”
“It’s Miss. Travere, Juliette.”
“Do not address me by my first name,” Ms. LaPore hissed at Florette, “I see Travere had no problem improvising.”
All eyes turned to Florette’s outfit. She pulled the legs of her pants down so that her socks were covered, but her flannel was simply unhidable.
“Do you have an explanation for your attire, Travere?” Ms. LaPore said.
“Uh, yeah, Juliette,” Florette responded. Léonie mumbled a quiet ‘Oh my goodness’ and shook her head. Florette continued, “I thought, because I’m ninety-two and not incapable, I should be able to dress myself in whatever I see fit.”
Ms. LaPore’s face turned bright red and she stormed towards Florette. Almost like they were in a cartoon, Ms. LaPore grabbed the back of Florette’s collar and began pulling her towards the other room. Before they entered, Ms. LaPore turned to the rest of the group, “I want complete silence in here until I return! Anyone who speaks will end up like Travere here.”
The door slammed behind them and the three volunteers were left alone in the kitchen. None of them spoke and they ate their toast in silence.
A man in a business suit worth more than Léonie had seen in her lifetime walked in the room quickly to grab some cups. His glare lingered on the three of them and their measly pieces of toasts as he made his way through the room. Other than that interruption, their breakfast went on quietly.
The moment Danilo finished his toast, Florette walked through the doorway. Her head was down, hiding a bright red mark on her face, and her arms were crossed in front of her.
“Ms. LaPore says to meet in the amphitheater,” Florette said as she grabbed her piece of toast and continued towards the other door.
-
The amphitheater was in the front woods, so that guests could not see the volunteer’s housing. It was surrounded by trees, but because of its weekly cleaning, there was no sign of dirt on the stage or seating. There was a circle stage made of bricks in a herringbone pattern. The seating was also brick, and for this occasion, cushions had been put at each of the guests’ spots. The volunteers had been placed in the very back, with only Mr. Johnson to watch over them.
After a few minutes of the volunteers mindlessly flipping through their folders and Florette refusing to talk to Léonie, Mr. Steinberg and DeBurrow began leading the guests towards the amphitheater. Some of them looked at the amphitheater in an awe-like wonder, while others, who were unimpressed with the small size, chatted among themselves. The volunteers watched as the guests filed through the rows of seating and selected their spots. Most of them already had partners and sat together. A few of them were in military uniforms.
“Good morning, ladies and gentlemen,” Mr. DeBurrow spoke. He stood behind the pedestal that was positioned in the middle of the stage. He shuffled some notecards, “I thank you all for being here so early in the morning.”
Mr. DeBurrow cleared his throat, “Did you know that 98% of the officials in this room were formerly employed by their militaries? Mr. Howard Steinberg, Mrs. Juliette LaPore, Mr. Xavier Johnson, and myself included. Yet, 100% of you still work in the governm-”
Mr. Johnson awkwardly ran down the terraced seating down to Mr. DeBurrow. He whispered something in the elder man’s ear and then returned to the volunteers.
“Excuse me,” Mr. DeBurrow, “I know you all have been out of school for years, but I need to take attendance. We’ll do this quickly.
Anyone associated with the United States Central Intelligence, please raise your hand.”
Two men raised their hands. Mr. DeBurrow crossed something out on a piece of paper and told them to put their hands down.
“British Secret Intelligence Service?” A woman who resembled Reese raised her hand along with another man.
“Polish… Agencja Wywiadu?” A woman raised her hand.
Mr. DeBurrow called out names for at least five minutes until Florette was sure he had listed every country in the world. Well, every country except two.
“Now that that’s finished,” Mr. DeBurrow glanced at Mr. Johnson, “I can continue my speech. You all are gathered here today because you are, one, the best of the best in your respective countries and, two, you are some of the few individuals aware of the troubles brewing in China and Russia.”
A wave of murmurs rushed over the amphitheater. A few individuals seemed confused at the mention of the two countries, but were quickly informed by their companions.
“As of two weeks ago, China and Russia have been at war. It started near the town of Jalai Nur and Lake Hulun, on the Northern Chinese-Russian border,” suddenly, several holograms appeared behind Mr. DeBurrow. The Assembly had installed them instead of screens because of their effectiveness and inability to get wet. Only a few of the crowd was surprised by their appearance, as holograms and projections had been used for at least a decade.
A map of Russia and China, plus several statistics, appeared on the projection behind Mr. DeBurrow. He grabbed his pointing stick and directed the crowd’s attention to the map.
“I won’t get into much detail on the attacks so far,” Léonie sighed in frustration. She wanted to know what was going on. Mr. DeBurrow continued, “but if this war between these two countries carries on any farther, the world will irreversibly be thrust into World War III.”

They are on site to insure your landscape is completed properly. Definition is sometimes clearer or easier when describing what something is not rather than what it is. Landscape construction or hardscapes, as some refer to it, is everything in the landscape that is NOT planting. It is not alive. It does not grow. With minor exception it does not change its form after the job's completion. What you see is usually what you get - as opposed to the diversely fluid life span of the planted garden.
Landscape construction certainly defines outdoor space in the same way that planting beautifies outdoor space. Successful construction design and implementation has the ability to delineate space in a way that brings continuity and flow between the house and garden. It fortifies the functionality of the garden, pulling the user out as a participant rather than a mere observer. Its results are usually very immediate and in most cases permanent. It allows landscape to become architecture.
Outdoor rooms are created by intermingling and manipulating floors, ceilings, walls, and doors. Different media for each of those elements are chosen and integrated to bring about contrasting garden experiences. Garden walls might be fencing, wooden screening, solid panels of brick and stone, short retaining walls, or taller, free-standing enclosure walls. Floors can be segments of suspended decking, all types of paving, or visually can even be horizontal planes of water. Ceilings are normally partial ceiling such as awning, arbors, or trellises, but will sometimes become a fully functional ceiling as with the summerhouse, pavilion, or pool house.
We specialize in designing and installing outdoor spaces, utilizing materials such as pavers, natural stone, and modular block. Most of our retaining walls, outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, and patios are built using some or all of these materials. The seasonal program offers a solution for our clients who do not have a need for our weekly lawn care maintenance program. A specially trained crew will perform all the seasonal service functions which are as follows: • Deep Hand Pruning Albuquerque NM • Ground Cover Control Albuquerque NM • Hand Weeding Albuquerque NM • General Landscape Cleanup

A Guide to Pool Vacuuming: pool service company near me
Your search for information on Hoover pump strategies is about to come to a close because you have come to the perfect blog post. You can hoover your pool with the help of the advice we'll give you in this article. A swimming pool that is overgrown with debris or algae will not have all of the dirt removed by an automatic pool vacuum. This is when manual pool vacuuming comes in handy. When you manually hoover your pool, you need extra tools to put the manual hoover together. A telescopic pole, a vacuum head, a vacuum hose, a vacuum plate, and a scrub brush that you'll tie to the pole are typically required. Once you get weekly pool service from Gilbert Poolman, you don't need to worry about vacuuming your pool.

Congratulations BECKY! You’ve been accepted as VENUS.
Becky’s back, back again. Becky’s back, tell a friend! Now that I got that out of the way, I can make this a serious acceptance note. I can honestly say there was not a moment while reading this app that I didn’t think your Hana was it. Hana is obsessed with power and the way you hit on that through her bio had me on the edge of my seat. You created this storm of a girl that I want to know more about even if I know the danger associated with her. Both of us are beyond excited to see the “human embodiment of pikachu with anger issues” on the dash!
Welcome to Mutants Rising! Please read the checklist and submit your account within 24 hours.
Out of Character Information:
NAME/ALIAS: Becky
PRONOUNS: she / her
AGE: 24
TIMEZONE & ACTIVITY LEVEL: GMT ( but technically GMT +1 currently bc summer! ); online daily, particularly active atm because ya girl is working from home
In Character Information:
DESIRED ROLE: Venus / Hana Mercado
GENDER/PRONOUNS: Female; she/her
DETAILS & ANALYSIS:
Even in a city like Miami, Hana is hard to miss in a crowd. Bubblegum bursts, her lazy chew concealing the switchblade sharp smirk that slides across her mouth a little too late for anyone to be able to avoid the trouble that comes from it. She thinks she’s wired up wrong, like a casino gambling machine full of bullets that just keeps dishing out violence while playing its disjointed electric-warped song of congratulations, bright lights flashing wildly.
To your left, a man walking his pet leopard down the sidewalk; to the right, Hana Mercado paralysing a man with the touch of a fingertip for wolf-whistling her. She fits in well here, Florida born and raised, helping the drug lords keep their territories and the mutants keep their identities and everyone and anyone in between keep what’s left of their slowly unravelling sanity. Despite the bustling sea of tourists that ebbs and flows with the good weather, it’s easy to feel lonely. Hana isn’t great when it comes to other people. Pushing them away is a lot less difficult than making them stay.
Everything is loud. Everything is bright. The electricity is near palpable as she splashes through the remnants of a thunderstorm, rainwater spraying over fresh white sneakers. She’s quiet when the sun sets, bleeding red across the sky, the colour of the popsicles she’d eat for dinner as a kid. It’s hard to fear the consequences of her actions when she’s as close to a young god as anyone’s ever going to get. Mutants? Deities? Same difference if you know how to play to the right narrative.
Fuck you has always been easier to spit than a genuinely spoken I love you and that’s the honest-to-fuck truth.
[ + ] driven / brave / resilient / passionate [ - ] arrogant / reckless / unpredictable / childish
BIO:
Money is power. And power is power. And electricity? The sort that decorates the country like a spiderweb, an interwoven network of wires, all humming, all singing to her, the siren’s call of greatness from above ground and beneath it? Power.
Hana is a vicious formation of blood and desire, with the scent of someone burning from the inside inhaled like a nicotine hit. Interrogation comes naturally to her; smiles that should be sweet on a face like hers turn sharp and deadly. She likes to hear them beg. To watch them shake. People spill their secrets to her whether they like it or not.
It’s been that way since she was nineteen years old, static dancing between her fingertips after getting too riled up in an argument with a neighbour’s son over stealing her family’s gas cylinder. An impromptu lightning strike had left the tarmac lining the trailer park sizzling, black and sticky like summertime ( and don’t worry, the Cheeto-dust-decorated-rude-mouthed-slacker-of-a-punk-ass-brat had survived – getting hit by lightning suddenly made him interesting, too, so if anything she’d been doing him a favour ).
A freak accident, they’d called it. Another one of those unexpected Florida storms. But she knew better than that. As had her mom, smoking a fresh pack of Camel Blues from the other side of the door’s insect screen, fresh foils in her hair, acrylic nails the colour of the algae in the neglected community pool down the street. Thinking back, maybe this all stemmed from swallowing too much of that fucking nuclear-waste-looking water when she’d dared to swim there as a kid, hot and sweaty as a storm breaks on the horizon.
But the point – the point is that, to her mom, having the human embodiment of Pikachu as a daughter was as good as winning a jackpot at one of her weekly bingo sessions. She tries to sell it. Power. The ability to pluck electricity from charged particles in the air makes her daughter useful. A living battery. Studies on mutants at University of Miami dish out hefty paychecks after the right terms and conditions have been signed ( note: if you die, that’s on you, don’t try to sue us ). Hana attempts to protest but even she can’t deny that the allure of getting rich sounds like a dream come true.
So she goes to college. Not in the usual sense, sure, but she gets to live on campus ( in a secure underground testing facility beneath the BioMed building ) and hang out with others ( mostly mutants ) her age. And it’s fine for a while until simple fitness tests and blood sampling turn more extreme. Some days are hazy, pumped full of drugs and hooked up to machines that she doesn’t know the name of, let alone the purpose, beeping their own idle hospital-like symphony. Other days are dark and quiet, plunged into sensory deprivation for the sake of whatever it is the boffins in their lab coats are trying to figure out.
She’ll get rich or die trying and, ironically, neither of those things happens.
When the anti-mutant-testing protestors storm the building, they free Hana from both the confinement and the contract. The money she was supposed to get at the end of all this vanishes, along with the pleased looking humans who pat themselves on the back for doing a good deed and disappear to go and celebrate. None of them ask her if this was what she wanted. None of them stop to think that maybe liberation was never an option for her.
Her mom’s gone too. A new trailer stands where Hana’s home once had. The monthly paychecks from the university never reached her bank account, instead wired directly to Mrs Mercado. She laughs until she cries, the air crackling overhead.
After all that, turning to a life of crime is far easier than it has any right to be. Angry and alone, she fucks a guy in a gang in the back of his drop-top and makes herself useful when it comes to getting money out of those who owe it. She runs from the cops. Has a gun pressed to her temple. Watches an illegal weed farm burn at the flick of a lighter. Nothing phases her because she doesn’t let it. Rules stop meaning anything when you realise just what having powers can get you. Making a living from getting spineless people to open up their mouths and offer the gold that is information makes her feel a little less like a failure. Interrogation has a nice ring to it, after all. And once she makes a name for herself, sought after by those who know that secrets are worth a decent stack of bills – well – who is she to turn a job down?
EXPANDED CONNECTIONS:
YVETTE. It’s more than just the sticky sweet sugar of sisterhood. Hana would fight tooth and nail for Yvette should she say the word; would go to war for her if needed. There are very few people in the world that she cares about more than herself, but her partner ( in crime, in the sport of bringing their enemies down, in a vodka-tasting kiss that she’s managed to take a little too far ) holds the throne to Hana’s adoration. If only Yvette would take another step further into chaos and embrace becoming the seductive sort of danger that people run from.
ANDREAS. He knows how to say the right things, she’ll give him that. Hana wants what is hers. And sure, she may not know what that is exactly but the whispers of power he offers are captivating. After so long of operating alone for anyone with enough money to afford her services, the concept of joining strengths is a tricky one to navigate. She keeps him waiting, keeps him on his toes, avoiding a crystal clear answer for the sake of keeping her cards close to her chest. Better to have multiple options on the table than settling for the first one that comes along.
DEREK. Oh, the joy of knowing she’s the shiny new model; a glossy picture-perfect upgrade; a brand new battery to keep Damien and his clowns energised. The temptation of coaxing out Derek’s anger to watch him slip up and fall further from grace is all too great. She’ll press a cherry red lipstick kiss to the dark shades of the sunglasses he will no doubt need down here in paradise. Her future is bright, can he say the same about his own?
DAMIEN ft. JACKSON. He sends his loyal hound. She can only assume that Jackson is missing a collar because he doesn’t like wearing it in public; his Tiffany heart-shaped dog tag would probably get too warm glinting in the Miami sunshine. Hana knows a mob boss pet when she sees one, sniffing her out amongst the cheap cocktails and plastic palms of a Tiki Bar on Ocean Drive. Who’s a good boy? It’s appealing, the carefully constructed dream Damien offers. Almost a little too good to be true given the circumstances. She knows his gang has chased others out, a fine show of strength and organisation, but how long will it last when he doesn’t even know this city?

Where reopening is working (NYT) Across much of the United States and Europe, the coronavirus has been spreading less rapidly than many people feared. Over the past six weeks—as communities have started to reopen, Americans have flocked to beaches and lakes and European schools have reopened—but the number of new cases has continued falling in many places. Across the Northeast and Midwest of the U.S., they’re down more than 50 percent, and often much more, since May 1. Nationwide, weekly deaths have fallen for six weeks in a row. And Europe “seems to have turned a corner,” Caitlin Rivers of Johns Hopkins University says. How could this be? Public health experts gave two main answers. One, the virus spreads much less easily outdoors than indoors. “Summer—being outside, warmer weather, humidity—seems to help, and we may have underestimated how much it’s helped,” Ashish Jha, the incoming dean of Brown University School of Public Health, told me. Two, many people are taking more precautions than they were in February and March. They’re wearing masks, remaining six feet apart and being careful about what they touch. The combination appears to have eliminated most “superspreader events,” like parties, concerts and restaurant meals, where multiple people get sick. Such events may account for 80 percent of all transmissions, research suggests.
Beleaguered and besieged, police try to come to grips with a nation’s anger (Washington Post) The crowds have thinned and the smoke has cleared, with more than a week of nationwide protests leaving in their wake a nation increasingly resolved to change a broken law enforcement system. But they also have left police officers badly shaken, and in some cases physically bruised. Nationwide, police leaders say the rank and file are struggling to come to grips with the level of animus they encountered on the streets, as epithets, bricks and bottles all came hurtling their way. Police have been targets of protest many times before, of course. But never quite like this. “I’ve had members say they feel like a Vietnam veteran returning home to a country that hates them,” said Robert Harris, a Los Angeles police officer and director of the force’s police union. “It’s not that our members expect thank-yous. It’s the difficulty in knowing that the protesters want to be treated with equality and fairness and respect, and what they’re protesting for isn’t afforded to the officers themselves.” “The morale is low,” he said. “They’ve taken quite a beating.”
Federal Debt Tops $26 Trillion for First Time; Jumps $2 Trillion in Just 63 Days (CNS News) The debt of the federal government topped $26 trillion for the first time on Tuesday, when it climbed from $25,960,547,920,986.11 to $26,003,751,512,344.91, according to data released today by the Treasury Department. The federal debt had topped $24 trillion for the first time on April 7, 2020.
A Single Session of Exercise Alters 9,815 Molecules in Our Blood (NYT) When we exercise, the levels of thousands of substances in our bloodstream rise and drop, according to an eye-opening new study of the immediate, interior impacts of working out. The study is the most comprehensive cataloging to date of the molecular changes that occur during and after exercise and underscores how consequential activity—and inactivity—may be for our bodies and health. Over all, the researchers were taken aback by the magnitude of the changes in people’s molecular profiles after exercise, according to Dr. Michael Snyder, the chair of the genetics department at Stanford University and senior author of the study. “I had thought, it’s only about nine minutes of exercise, how much is going to change? A lot, as it turns out.”
United will require passengers to complete health assessments before they fly (Washington Post) United Airlines on Wednesday became at least the second U.S. carrier to ask travelers to answer questions about their health status before they fly, part of a strategy to ease the minds of travelers concerned about flying in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. United’s “Ready-to-Fly” checklist will ask travelers to confirm that they have not experienced any coronavirus-related symptoms in the 14 previous days or been in close contact with any individual who has tested positive during the same time period. It also will require passengers to verify that they are aware of the airline’s policy requiring face coverings when aboard an airplane.
Are religious communities reviving the revival? Outdoor worship is a US tradition (Religion News Service) Religious communities have been forced to find alternative ways to worship together during the coronavirus pandemic. For some that has meant going online, but others have turned to a distinctly non-digital practice steeped in this history of the American religious experience: outdoor worship. Prayer sessions in parking lots and services in green spaces formed part of an improvised response to the lockdown by religious leaders and they may now be part of the plan as the United States emerges from the crisis. Indeed, a team of clergy and scientists have issued a new guide suggesting, among other recommendations, that baptisms could take place in “flowing streams, lakes or in beach settings.” So are brick-and-mortar houses of worship essential? It is a question that states and courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, have asked in considering the extent to which states can or should place restrictions on meetings in religious buildings. Religious communities, too, have reflected on whether the term “church” describes a building or a community. While white evangelical Protestants have been some of the more vocal protesters of government restrictions on houses of worship during the pandemic, they actually have a long history of embracing outdoor worship in services and revivals.
Watch kids near water (NYT) This year, with outings to the community pool, day camps and pool parties still on hold, kids cooped up at home will be eager to get in the water as the weather warms. Experts worry that parents are stretched too thin to provide the required supervision, leading to an increase in child drownings this summer. As of mid-May, both Florida and Texas—the top two states for child drownings in pools and spas—are already seeing higher numbers than last year. If you have toddlers and you think you don’t have to worry because you don’t have a real pool—just one of those little plastic or inflatable baby pools—you still have a hazard sitting in your yard. Little kids can drown in less than two inches of water. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, drowning is the leading cause of injury death in children ages 1 to 4, and nearly 70 percent of the time, it happens when children aren’t supposed to be in the pool.
Zoom censors video talks on Hong Kong and Tiananmen, drawing criticism (Washington Post) Several prominent critics of the Chinese government, including protest leaders in Hong Kong and pro-democracy activists in the United States, have accused Zoom of shutting their accounts and severing live events in recent weeks under pressure from Beijing. The three incidents are reviving concerns about the fast-growing Silicon Valley company’s susceptibility to Chinese government influence weeks after the firm began facing scrutiny over security, including its routing of data through China. Coming in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the episode also highlights the world’s dependency on services such as Zoom and their ability to control speech. Zoom on Thursday acknowledged that “a few recent meetings” related to China have been disrupted. In each instance, event organizers told The Washington Post that they relied on Zoom in lieu of in-person events because of social distancing and travel restrictions. And each of the Zoom accounts and events was created and hosted outside mainland China but appeared to be quashed under Chinese government pressure after publicly advertised.
EU pushes back on Beijing (Foreign Policy) China’s aggressive diplomacy in Europe is now causing serious pushback. The European Union, normally reluctant to speak out against Beijing, has accused the government of running “targeted influence operations and disinformation campaigns in the EU, its neighborhood, and globally,” along with Russia. The move may be a response to earlier criticism that the EU softened a report on the same topic. Meanwhile, Britain’s swerve away from China has been fast, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson proposing a D-10 alliance of democracies—the existing G-7, plus South Korea, India, and Australiato build 5G networks free of Chinese influence. The Hong Kong crisis has further soured U.K.-Chinese relations, with Beijing warning that it may pull out a British nuclear power construction deal. Since the original nuclear deal was widely seen as a disaster in the U.K., this doesn’t give Beijing much leverage.
Poland troop plan falters (Foreign Policy) After U.S. President Donald Trump said he would remove 9,500 troops from Germany, plans to relocate troops further east in Poland have fallen into disarray, Reuters reports. A plan announced in June of last year to send 1,000 U.S. troops to Poland permanently has been held up over disputes over how much of the bill Poland would cover, where to station the troops, and whether they would gain legal immunity while stationed there.
Lack of beds slows Delhi’s virus fight (AP) In New Delhi, a sprawling capital region of 46 million and home to some of India’s highest concentration of hospitals, a pregnant woman’s death after a frantic hunt for a sickbed was a worrying sign about the country’s ability to cope with a wave of new coronavirus cases. “She kept begging us to save her life, but we couldn’t do anything,” Shailendra Kumar said, after driving his sister-in-law, Neelam, and her husband for hours, only to be turned away at eight public and private hospitals. Two and a half months of nationwide lockdown kept numbers of infections relatively low in India. But with restrictions easing in recent weeks, cases have shot up, rising by a record of nearly 10,000 on Thursday, raising questions about whether authorities have done enough to avert catastrophe. Half of Delhi’s 8,200 hospital beds dedicated to COVID-19 patients are already full and officials are projecting more than half a million cases in the city alone by July 31.
Chinese recovery (Foreign Policy) Some data indicates that the speed of economic recovery in China may be faster than feared, with oil use already back to 90 percent of pre-coronavirus levels. Domestic demand for consumer goods is strong, but a lack of global demand is hamstringing Chinese manufacturers: Reopened factories are struggling to find customers.
Floyd killing finds echoes of abuse in South Africa, Kenya (AP) Collins Khosa was killed by law enforcement officers in a poor township in Johannesburg over a cup of beer left in his yard. The 40-year-old black man was choked, slammed against a wall, beaten, kicked and hit with the butt of a rifle by the soldiers as police watched, his family says. Two months later, South Africans staged a march against police brutality. But it was mostly about the killing of George Floyd in the United States, with the case of Khosa, who died on April 10, raised only briefly. Despite racial reconciliation that emerged after the end of the apartheid system, poor and black South Africans still fall victim to security forces that now are mostly black. The country is plagued by violent crime, and police often are accused of resorting to heavy-handed tactics. Journalist Daneel Knoetze, who looked into police brutality in South Africa between 2012 and 2019, found that there were more than 42,000 criminal complaints against police, which included more than 2,800 killings—more than one a day. There were more than 27,000 cases of alleged assault by police, many classified as torture, and victims were “overwhelmingly” poor and black, he said. And in Kenya, the police force has for two decades been ranked the country’s most corrupt institution. It’s also Kenya’s most deadly, killing far more people than criminals do, according to human rights groups.
