Warnings: none
Words: 1.9K
Part 2
The ship had arrived. Finally he was home and there was nothing he wanted more than to see Betty again. Paul climbed down the landing and looked around at all the people waiting for them. Jimmy turned around and grinned at him. “When did you last see her?”
“Our wedding day, four years ago.” he returned, clapping his friend on the shoulder
Jimmy grinned, turning back to him. “Let me guess, met her on Friday, married on Sunday and shipped out on Monday?”
“Pretty much.” Paul nodded, blinking against the rain falling down.
“Me too.” his fellow soldier admitted. “Ain’t war hell? I bet we don’t even recognize them.”
The dark haired soldier shook his head, knowing it wasn’t true for him. “Oh, na,I’d recognize her anywhere.” Everywhere he looked were the wives of his friends waiting for their husbands, but there was no one waiting for him. No Betty waiting there at the harbor, standing in the rain and taking him back into his arms.
Didn’t he tell her he was coming today?
With a sigh he made his way to the apartment he shared with Betty, hoping she would at least be there and he could get out of his wet clothes. What an amazing reception he had gotten from his wife.
***
Armistead was holding onto William, the baby wailing in his arms as Betty ran after you. The term was over and you needed to get back to Napa Valley. Every year the vineyard would be abuzz with life, every one of the family and workers helping with the harvest.
You were so happy, going back to be with your parents and siblings, your grandparents and everyone that worked at the plantation, but it also meant leaving San Francisco behind and maybe never getting to meet Paul.
"Won't you stay for a little longer? Paul will be coming home and"
"And he will know you haven't been exactly faithful to him." you interrupted, finally fed up with her attitude.
Biting her lip, the red head watched you desperately, trying to decide if she should reach about to you or leave you be, her hands fidgeting as she fought an internal war with herself. "But maybe if you stayed, maybe I could explain it to Paul, tell him the truth about the letters."
"Don't you dare, Betty." you rounded on her with anger, making both Armistead and her take step back from you. A trait you had inherited from your father and that you hated with passion, but now you were thankful that finally your feelings could be shown. "Paul has been nothing but devoted, brave and so absolutely in love with you and you throw it back into his face with him." You glared at her lover, noticing that he held on tightly to their son. "I sincerely hope that your husband will see you for what you are, Betty, and that he will leave you." With that you grabbed your suitcase and left the apartment, not once looking back at the couple.
Making your way down the road, you felt angry tears burn your eyes. She should have been lucky for having such a wonderful husband and yet Betty went and got pregnant from the next best man she found. He was older than her by a few years but had money, something she thought Paul couldn't give her. You came by the hardware store, brushing at the salty remnants on your cheek when you felt your shoulder collide with something hard. Looking up your eyes widened, seeing the man in front of her. His face had been burned into your mind and would never leave you until you died.
“Are you alright, ma’am?” his deep but pleasant voice rumbled as you lost your grip on your suitcase. “I didn’t hurt you, did I?”
The fallen luggage and spread out clothes pulled you back from your thoughts, shaking your head to get rid of any images that your consciousness had conjured up. "I-I no…I'm alright, thank you."
Your tongue darted out, wetting your lips. Why did he have to show up now? You felt yourself getting flustered even more when you saw all of your undergarments strewn across the pavement. "I should" you swallowed the lump in your throat. "I should get this all sorted out."
Paul crouched down and took the other clothes, helping you. When he held out one of your chemises, you saw the soft blush on his cheeks and it definitely wasn’t from the cold. Once you had haphazardly put everything back into the case, you sent a quick smile at him, grateful for the help before you left. “Thank you again for the help, I-I really should get going.” You’d never see him again anyway, so what did it matter if you had embarrassed yourself showing Paul your undergarments.
Before he could say anything you had already grabbed your case and were back on your way. He shook his head, finally moving on to get home to his wife who hopefully waited for him at the apartment.
***
Turning the key in the lock, Paul listen to the click with a satisfied sigh, finally home. No more war, no more death, no more fighting. Just him and Betty now. They'd finally start their life, as a real couple with all the things they had planned to do once he was back. With a smile he stepped inside, already imaging how she would greet him.
Would she wear that pot a dot number he wrote in the letter, or something new?
Paul looked around, but he couldn't find Betty anywhere. The kitchen and living room were unoccupied, so he looked in the other rooms, the study had been made into a second bedroom, why he didn't know, but then he heard voices in the master bedroom.
"He will be coming any minute now." That was Betty, she sounded anxious, was she talking to herself? Listening to a record?
"You need to tell him the truth, Betty. You can't hide it forever." It was definitely male, but Paul didn't know she had a brother. His wife had told him she didn't have family, so who was the man?
Opening the door he came face to face with his redheaded wife, holding a baby boy in her arms and a man older than him by a few years.
"Betty?"
A watery smile graced her lips as she walked over to him, one arm tightly around his shoulders. "Paul." she sighed looking up at him. "I-I'm glad you're okay."
"What is the meaning of this?" he pointedly looked at his wife and the man holding onto the baby.
Betty bit her lip, the tears gathered in her eyes threatening to spill over. "Paul." she swallowed. "My dearest Paul, I am so sorry. It-I was lonely. I couldn't bear the thoughts of battle and you not coming home to me."
"So you looked elsewhere?" Paul wasn't angry, he was hurt that he believed to come home to a loving wife and instead found her with a baby and another man.
"I'm sorry, Paul." The redhead moved over to stand with Armistead and her son.
Nodding his head, the soldier moved back to the door, turning to his wife one last time. "I guess it's better if we annulled this marriage, that way we are both happier."
"Paul." Betty called, but was only answered with the silence of his departure.
***
Finally you reached the train station, not wanting to stay another minute in this city. Everyone celebrated, their loved ones back, well for most of them at least. You had seen the newspaper today, the celebration in New York was a few days before and there was this picture of the soldier coming home kissing a nurse. At the thought a sigh left your mouth and you could feel your heart flutter.
Would you have been greeted like that if you had someone in the war?
Would Paul have done that? If you had been his wife and not Betty?
Thankfully the train was already entering the station. Your home was waiting for you, the hills of the vineyard already heavily hung with grapes. You boarded the train and took the first seat you could find, putting your case onto the upper rack. No need to ask someone for help, after all your father had raised you to be independent. Going home would be for the best now, forgetting about the war, love.
Paul.
"Is this seat taken?" a deep voice asked next to you and the first thing you saw was the green of his uniform before your eyes landed on his dark ones.
So much for forgetting about him.
Shaking your head, you held onto yóur bag, putting it in your lap so you wouldn’t have to talk to him. It’s wasn’t like you hated him, but you didn’t want to fall for him only to have to let him go in the end.
Paul put his rucksack onto the rack above, smiling down at you as he seemed to recall you again. “We happen to be going in the same direction, I guess.” he said as he sat down onto his seat.
“If you are going to Sacramento, too, then yes we are.” The corners of your mouth tugged upward.
He grinned at you, the light reflecting in his brown eyes. “I’m not sure yet. Up until today I thought I would be coming home to a wife and start planning our future together but as it is now, she already did that.”
You bit your lip, trying to think of something to say that would not reveal the truth that you knew all along. “I’m sorry to hear that, Mr”
“Oh, Sutton.” he reached out his hand for you to shake. “Sergeant Paul Sutton of the 7th Infantry Division.”
“Y/N Aragon, it is a pleasure to meet you.” You smiled at him as he took of his jacket. “So, you’re a war hero it seems.”
Shrugging, Paul leaned back in the seat. “I’m not sure if I really am, I just want to start over now. What are you going to do in Sacramento?”
“Ah, I’m not going to go there directly.” you answered, pulling the blue jacket you wore over your dress off your shoulders. “My family owns a vineyard in Napa Valley, I’ll be going there for the harvest.”
He cocked his head, interest coloring his words. “A vineyard, it sounds like a dream.”
“It is, I assure you. Rolling hills of grape vines and the best wine you’ll taste in all of your life.” You had closed your eyes while talking about your home and Paul could see the love and passion just from this action.
“I will have to visit you once to make sure you are telling the truth then.”
You nodded eagerly, not sure if you really wanted him to spend more time with you when you still had that secret held over your head. “You really need to come.” Looking out at the landscape that flew by the window you got lost in thought again.
If Paul would ever find out about the letters you had sent, could he forgive you?

9/30/19 - 10/7/19
Aaaaand I'm back, baby! (better late than never, I suppose) We started the week by celebrating Rosh Hashanah which was super fun. Our Jewish housemate spoke Hebrew as she blessed our meal, and we all dipped apples in honey in order to start out the new Jewish year on a sweet note. We ate brisket, mashed potatoes, matzo ball soup, noodle casserole, challah bread, pomegranates, and we toasted with apple cider and champagne. Traditionally, you can also dip your bread into water or run water over your hands in the sink to symbolize a cleansing of the person as the new year begins.
Someone in my house had a birthday on Friday, and since I was away for my cousin's wedding, I baked them a cake and painted a watercolor horse for her on Wednesday. I told her that I could bake her a cake from scratch since I am the descendent of German bakers, but she specifically insisted on having Confetti Cake Mix from a box. While I was getting the cake mix from a Rite Aid, someone stole my bike from the bike rack outside (even though it was locked), so I had to walk at least an hour on foot to get home which was a bummer. When I realized that it was stolen and had not just disappeared into thin air, I became upset and started asking people if they saw my bike. Some scary-ass looking bikers were really upset for me and offered to look for it, which I thought was sweet of them. I went back into the Rite Aid and asked if I could see their footage from the video camera outside, and they simply answered, "No. Sorry about your bike, though." I wasn't in trouble with anyone even though the bike belonged to the house/the Jesuits, but I'm just mad that someone got the jump on me, so I might still put up signs that say something like, "Hi, I know you stole my bike. This is not a warning to bring it back. No, I am telling you instead that I know who you are and will find you. I know where you went, and I am coming to get my bike back. When I find you, you will wish you had never even looked at my bike in the first place. Good luck." This doesn't really seem in the spirit of the JVC, though, so I might pass on that idea. If anyone is in the Sacramento area and sees a cute little teal-colored bike, it's mine!
Anyways, here are a couple of random things that need to be noted. Firstly, I have decided to return to St. Louis for Thanksgiving, and I will be there from November 27 until December 1st, so if you want to hang out, text me and we can make plans! Secondly, I keep calling the organization for whom I work by the wrong name which everyone thinks is hilarious. I keep saying "Fishes and Loaves" instead of "Loaves and Fishes". Thirdly, I am now able to make coffee in a pot all by myself (so watch out world).
Work has been too strange and funny to believe. On Monday, a woman waiting in line for the free lunch, at the organization Friendship Park, attempted to come into the playground area while the kids were at recess. She made eye-contact with a couple kids and tried to beckon them over to her and pointed to a bag, shaking it like she had something for them. While I was walking over to the fence to confront her, she snaked a hand around to the inside of the fence and started to try to unlock it from the outside. I grabbed the lock and held it closed and told her very icily, "We're not interested. No thank you," until she gave up. She tried arguing with me, saying she wanted to give the children treats and that we were mistreating them, but I just kept telling her we were not interested, so she left but not before calling me a "bitch". All I can say is that she is lucky that she was on the other side of the fence from me. I also led PE classes for the volunteer who went home over the weekend, which was exhausting because I had to do all my work responsibilities and hers too so I was running around all day without a break.
One of the girls who I drive to and from school is an absolute hoot. One morning, she told me in all seriousness that I need to brush my hair more. Another favorite thing of hers to do is to roll down the window of our car and try to talk to people in other cars. Today, she called out to some little boys at a red light, "Hello! Do you want to be my friend?" One day, she said, "I have a secret to tell you," and I replied, "Do you know what a secret means?" (a joke she didn't get/appreciate, haha) Unfortunately, despite her super sunny demeanor, her living situation is a tragedy. One morning, I went to pick her up, and I saw her and her mom sitting outside on the sidewalk with all their stuff around them. The mom said that she had just been kicked out from their friend's apartment and had nowhere to go. On the way to school, the little girl told me about how she was worried about where she would stay tonight. Also today, I found out that a family of seven kids was taken into CPS custody and nobody knows where they could be.
Last Friday, I was having my one-on-one with my supervisor, and a homeless man asked for some adult diapers because he had IBS and was wearing the same thing all week. We eventually walked with him to another building and got some, and he was very grateful. It felt good to be able to actually do something because sometimes I feel like I die a little bit any time I have to turn someone away or tell someone 'no' when people ask for money.
Thursday through Sunday, I was at my cousin Caitlin's wedding, which was amazing. I basically traveled all of Thursday and got in at night. On Friday, we rehearsed walking in and standing in line for the wedding. Afterwards, we went to lunch together outside, and I made the very unwise decision to wear a romper in Michigan in October. That night, we had the rehearsal dinner at a brewery. On Saturday, I met up with the rest of the bridal party in the hotel lobby at 9am and went to the salon to get our hair and makeup done. We drank mimosas and coffee as we got ready for the wedding. We all got dressed together in Caitlin's hotel room and ended up walking a couple blocks to the venue which was really fun because people kept cheering us on and commenting on Caitlin's wedding dress. The ceremony was so sweet, and I loved the part where Caitlin and Kyle washed each other's feet as an act of service to each other as a married couple. Afterwards, we took group pictures and went to the reception in a building nearby. I'm so happy for them, and I'm still so grateful for being included as a bridesmaid.
Sincerely,
MK

New York, US
I walked through MACUSA, looking for Ben.
I had just flown into New York, via JFK International, and came in on New York’s underground. Now that was an interesting experience.
I was here because New York had been the last place I'd stayed before portkeying over to the UK for the wedding. Ben was also the last person whom I crashed with.
Which meant he had my trunk, probably still in his living room. I spotted the familiar blond hair, and waved frantically.
American!Ben was much easier to be around. Not the scared first year, but also not the caustic person he'd been the last few years at Hogwarts, he was much more like the fourth year I enjoyed being around, just grown up. Being away from Britain and 'R' had done Ben wonders.
Even if he'd hit a healthy growth spurt and shot up like a bean plant in the Weasleys' garden, and now towered over me some.
"How was -"
"I'm so glad -!"
Our sentences collided as he greeted me with a friendly hug, and I gave a squeeze in response.
"I'm so glad you're not in Britain right now...!" I started again, taking in his shocked look.
"What happened at the wedding?!" He rephrased, his mind registering the relief in my voice.
I gulped. "Death Eaters crashed it during the reception." I swallowed nervously. "I think You-Know-Who took over the Ministry back home. Muggleborns are- are being rounded up, 'ca- 'cause the ministry's now making it sound like they stole magic..." I shuddered, unable to continue. Ben looked alarmed.
I had stayed with the Weasleys before flying over here, helping Penny along the way. She travelled to France, taking what she could with her.
"And my parents?" He asked, a hint of first year Ben shining through.
"I'll keep an eye on them, once I get back." I promised. He glanced around at the wizards and witches, before wrapping my hand in his larger one.
"Come with me, you can stay with me for a couple more days." He gently guided me down the cast and wrought iron stairs to the floor where he worked.
The experimental charms division at MACUSA looked like a cross between a duelling room and a laboratory.
A mix of glass walled spaces for testing new charms, and an open area with dummies off to one side, with desks lining one side of the space, and the other a series of offices.
It was also bright, a sharp contrast to the more industrial style that, fittingly, made up MACUSA’s interior.
We made out way over to Ben’s desk, and he introduced me to his desk mate, one Will Parkmoore.
I almost missed grabbing the mug of tea Ben had been handing to me, out of shock.
“You don’t say…” I muttered, managing to take the mug, before holding out my free hand. “Ellie Marcovitz.”
He reminded me of labrador, all smiles and eager charm.
“Will Parkmoore. You alright?” he asked, shaking my hand, a teasing smile on his face. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“In a way,” I replied evasively. It was hard to tell how much he knew about his family. He shrugged, relaxing back in his chair. I took a seat in Ben’s.
“You look a lot like how Ben’s described you,” he started, taking a sip of his coffee. “What brings you here?” he asked, as Ben hurried to catch one of the other researchers.
I shrugged. “Need to pick up my things, that left over at Ben’s place.” I replied, before hesitating. There was something about him, possibly that he was distant family, that made me trust him enough. “My boyfriend’s oldest brother got married a few days ago, and something’s happened that some bad people have taken over the ministry.” I fiddled with the spoon that was in the mug. “I’m hoping I can help stop them.”
“So not a vacation,” he teased, sitting up. I smiled a little, shaking my head.
“I’m surprised I haven’t run into you before now,” I added. “I know I’ve visited Ben here a couple times over the past couple months.”
“I’ve actually just transferred from the California field office in Sacramento a few weeks ago.” He shrugged in a more relaxed manner. “Still getting used to the formalities of the main offices.”
I spotted Ben coming back, and conjured my own chair, moving over and letting him set what he was carrying down.
The afternoon was spent observing the going-ons of the division, watching as members tested spells against the dummies, which looked nothing like the death eater ones back at Hogwarts.
I also managed to read some, after finding a battered copy of Kip Thorne’s Black Holes and Time Warps, leisurely listening to the chatter that filled the room as the afternoon went on. It was almost relaxing.
Close to five, Ben tapped me on my shoulder, and I reluctantly pulled myself from the book.
Heading out of MACUSA, the late afternoon heat felt good, as we headed to the nearest subway station. We ended up taking a stroll uptown, talking dinner, and I was starting to feel both the time difference and the jet lag.
I was surprised I hadn’t passed out at MACUSA.
