A handwoven celebration of Raja Ravi Varma’s timeless painting
The legend behind Hamsa Damayanti
Raja Ravi Varma’s painting captures a pivotal moment in the story of the protagonist, Damayanti. Her legend is one of the many strands that compose the Mahabharata, and is remembered for its attributes of loyalty, love, conviction and persistence.
Damayanti, the princess of the Vidarbha kingdom, was famed for her beauty. Her mother hoped that the princess would be the bride of a god; she sent a swan (hamsa) to Lord Indra, inviting him to seek Damayanti’s hand in marriage.
Destiny had other plans. The swan got swept up in a storm and sought refuge in Nishada, the kingdom of Nala, a skilled charioteer and capable ruler. Impressed by how King Nala cared for it, the swan flew back to Damayanti instead of soaring into the clouds to meet Lord Indra. The swan sang Nala’s praises, Damayanti fell in love, and the god to whom she was promised was not pleased.
Despite the gods’ many deceits, Damayanti chose to marry Nala and lived happily as his queen in Nishada for years. Yet, the gods did not forget. They tricked Nala into gambling away his kingdom, forcing him and Damayanti into exile in the forest. Guilt-ridden and ashamed, Nala believed that Damayanti was better off without him and abandoned her in the forest. Devastated but undeterred, Damayanti searched for Nala, convinced that they would one day be reunited. She faced every challenge with poise and, 12 years later, they met again.
Nala won back his kingdom from his younger brother Pushkara, and all the wiser from their many hardships, King Nala and Queen Damayanti ruled Nishada admirably till the end of their days.

Love is the overwhelming presence. - TRU
A few moments from my very first traditional Indian wedding. My maternal family and I gathered to celebrate the union of my cousin and his bride in beautiful Balito in Durban. This was my second trip to the warm coast and I was absolutely in love with this side of the world and deeply honored to bare witness and participate in a traditional Hindu ceremony. The brides family were so generous and provided us with traditional saris to wear, this was my first time in one and I didn’t want to take it off. To sing OM together in grace, dance together in joy and bless the hands and feet of the bride and groom with turmeric, as well as have my own Mehndi done was so special. The effort, the place, the natural splendour of this African earth and family gathering in love was a treat that my heart really needed. I Am thankful for the time well spent, the beauty adorned and the love well shared. - TRU

The styles of wedding sarees are as diverse as the brides themselves. It's the perfect drape that flatters the bride's form, the delicate blouse that peeks through, and the graceful way the pallu flows over her shoulder.

India’s handloom industry needs a hand
If there’s an instrument that can tell India’s story in all its multifaceted richness, it’s the handloom. The rhythmic rattle of the loom has sounded in India’s villages for millennia; every motif that takes shape beneath the weaver’s nimble fingers bears influences from near and far, and every technique is an innovation sparked by the intertwining of cultures.
This is particularly true of the sari. If the luxe Benaras weave speaks of Mughal patronage through its flamboyant Persian motifs, then the tie-and-dye technique that colours the eastern coast’s ikat saris is a memento of trade and cultural links with Indonesia. The Kanjivaram sari, its motifs infused with nature and mythology, mirrors Tamil Nadu’s cultural landscape. Generations of weavers have been the keepers of these stories, resolutely working at the loom, even as their own story becomes more imperiled.
National Handloom Day, observed on August 7th since 2015, draws attention to not just the products that are created on the handloom, but the people who create them as well.
For, a handwoven sari is an extension of its weaver’s skill and imagination, and filled with the richness of human touch. It’s said that no two handwoven saris are ever alike, even when crafted by the same weaver.
