So I broke down all the Easter eggs I saw in the first episode! I hope to do this with every episode and I’m going to start the second one tonight. This probably isn’t all of them, so comment if I missed something.

When Chanel announced the original J12 was to be retired, Nicolas Beau, chief executive of the maison’s watch division, took the opportunity to introduce Arnaud Chastaingt, director of Chanel’s Watch Creation Studio. “We thought the moment had come to reveal the face behind our watches,” Beau said.

Since 2013, Chastaingt had been busily designing a growing lineup of watches for both men and women, among them the Boy.Friend, the Code Coco, and Monsieur de Chanel (the maison’s first men’s watch), and Chanel’s rich collection of métiers d’art watches. For several years, Chastaingt had tip-toed toward changing the J12. He produced various iterations inspired by its design: a version was minimized and set on a black glove, another was affixed onto an embroidered cuff bracelet, and last year, a small series was produced in marquetry of ceramic, all experimental capsule collections that did not alter the J12’s “core” look.

Still, reinventing the J12 was a challenge Chastaingt felt he couldn’t avoid. “It was love at first sight with the J12, but I realized that I could not leave it untouched,” he said. “This was the most complex exercise of my career. It is much simpler to start from scratch than to retouch an icon.”

His goal was to strike a delicate balance between refreshing the watch without eliminating any of its signature cues. The J12 that was finally unveiled last month is so subtly freshened-up that it is easy to miss the improvements at first glance. Chastaingt altered the timepiece with surgical precision: its numerals were redrawn, its crown is smaller, and its case is faintly curvier than the original’s. Seventy percent of the components are new.

“In the end, we chose a paradox, which was to change everything without changing much at all,” Chastaingt said.

That may be an understatement given that the J12 now integrates a new automatic movement, the “Calibre 12.1,” which is visible through the watch’s clear case back. To accomplish this, Chanel acquired a 20 percent interest in Kenissi, a movement maker for the Tudor watch brand. Tudor is owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, which also controls Rolex.

“To produce a movement of this quality in industrial quantities, we needed a strategic partner with a technologically important input given the long-term relationship we had in mind,” Beau said.

The news of Chanel’s partnership with the extended Rolex family came as a surprise to the watch industry. Chanel has mostly been associated with smaller independent watch brands, including Romain Gauthier and Montres Journe. Angling to be eyewear’s next big thing, Futuremood launches with mood-altering sunglasses

Austin Soldner and Michael Schaecher, the co-founders of the new sunglasses brand Futuremood, met at the newly formed San Francisco research and development lab created by the high-end audio tech developer Bose.

The two were tasked with working on Bose’s sunglasses wearable and bonded over a shared interest in sneakers and fashion. Over many conversations the two men realized there was an opportunity to use technology to rewrite the sunglasses playbook and launch the first new brand to the market since Oakley came on the scene.

There was also an opportunity to bring the materials science and tech-forward strategies that sneaker companies have developed to an industry that hadn’t seen any real technical revolutions in decades.

Enter Futuremood “Auras,” which the company bills as the first glasses scientifically tested and proven to alter your mood.

Using technology developed by the lens manufacturer Zeiss, Futuremood’s first glasses come in four colors — a relaxing green, a refreshing blue, an energizing red and a focusing yellow. The company is launching its eyewear in two styles, a boxy, chunky frame and a more traditional rounded frame.

Any mood-altering effects are thanks to Zeiss’ halochrome lens technology, which the lens manufacturer has been working with — and publishing papers on — to suss out the science behind its claims that the use of filtered light can change the way folks feel.

There’s some preliminary research that the company has done, but the science is still largely unproven (Zeiss conducted two studies at European universities). 

Schaecher and Soldner are believers, and the two longtime tech execs see these lenses as a window into a wider world of material science experimentation and product development that they’re hoping to bring to market with Futuremood.

“If you think about sneakers and where Nike and Adidas got to where they are today, it was through innovation in product design and materials and branding and marketing and all of that had been missing from the sunglasses space,” Schaecher said.

The second marketing hire at Airbnb and the first marketing hire at the now-defunct Munchery, Schaecher knows a thing or two about branding. Meanwhile, Soldner, the founder of Playground.fm, and a former product designer at Jawbone, is the technical expert and lead designer for all of Futuremood’s frames.

“We really saw an opportunity to push the envelope in technical innovation and product innovation,” said Schaecher. “We have a backlog of stuff to push the envelope of what sunglasses are.”

One thing sunglasses are is a very very big business. Consumers spent $14.5 billion on sunglasses in 2018, according to the market research firm, Grand View Research.

If Futuremood can capture even a fraction of that market with its unique spin on sunglasses, it’ll be in good shape.

As with any good direct to consumer product, Futuremood’s difference begins with its packaging. Tapping in to the mood-altering “wearable drugs” aesthetic, the company’s product is packaged in boxes with the same bright hues as the sunglasses. Inside there’s a cloth to clean the glasses, a velvet pouch to hold them and a scented pack of incense matches and a vaguely tarot-esque card with information about the glasses and the sensation they’re meant to evoke (there’s even a Spotify playlist to listen to).

In an email, Schaecher described the sensation as “not as subtle as CBD, but not as strong as a shot of tequila or glass of Rosé.

“Austin and I are really into different ways of self care and taking moments and… we thought there was an opportunity to bring delight and joy,” with the packaging, Schaecher said. “We don’t expect people to be firing up Spotify playlists and incense matches every time they wear things.”

Futuremood has been mostly bootstrapped to date, and like everything else in the year of our Lord 2020, the company’s plans were pushed back by the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our lenses are made in Zeiss’ Italian factory and the glasses were made outside of Shenzhen,” said Schaecher. “We quarantined the first order for two weeks. Zeiss was right in that region of Italy that was getting hit hard. We’ve been delaying since then. It’s hard to put into words what it’s like to grind on something for eighteen months… and then have to delay launching.”

Even with the pandemic, though, the company moved ahead with the design for its second product, and that gives a hint for where Schaecher and Soldner want to go with their business. “We have our second product line and that is not mood-altering glasses,” said Schaecher. “That’s a traditional sunglasses line that uses titanium alloy metals that are more commonly seen in aerospace than in eyewear.”

The design aesthetic is also more in the luxury vein, which Schaecher teased was akin to something that would be more at home in a Cartier showroom rather than a direct to consumer brand’s digital storefront.

Right now, the company is going direct to consumers through its website, but it’s looking at the potential for some retail collaborations and field marketing when the country opens back up for business.

As for the mood-altering effects and whether “wearable drug” can win market share, Schaecher is pretty optimistic. “People definitely have reactions,” he said. “It’s a fun, new thing that’s never existed before.”

Phasion describes a personal process of conceiving and transforming ideas for fashion from disparate sources.

Fashion Design using Smart Materials:

“Who knows what clothes will be? Maybe an aerosol used to spray the body; maybe women will be dressed in coloured glass adherent to their body, or in halos of light, changing colour with the movements of the sun or with their Emotions ... Clothes will become transparent, and revert back into being ornaments once again, reflecting women’s desires to free their body from all former restrictions to let in new possibilities ... Free ones, really free.” Paco Rabanne 1969.

In response to this, in this session we worked as a group and were asked to create a brand on 3D printing. We took this concept and came up with the brand AXIS and created designs and a customer profile, then presenting this to the class. I felt this task helped me to explore advanced technologies and really understand the concept of “futuristic fashion”.

Analytical Reflection

Introduction

This project is a recap of what I have learned during the semester in English 212. In this class the topics have been that of the future, or what could be the future. We have researched technopanics, the future of the body, AI systems, and how all of our devices can be connected via internet. There are many topics that have a contradicting or ethical debate behind them, which is what makes these ideas so interesting. There is no doubt that the future beholds a technological advance, but to what extent? Let's find out what English 212 has taught me about the possible future.

Phase 1:

Fear is one of the strongest motivators that a human can experience. When we feel scared often times it is because we are vulnerable, and we feel that there is nothing that we can do to stop this fear. Many people feel this way about technological advancements, giving it the name “technopanic”.  In link number one a book by the name “The Googlization of Everything, and Why We Should Worry” was discussed. The two men talked about how google is a great tool for many things, but we don’t in fact need it to survive. The author described google as “a lens that shows some things and hides others.” Cyber security is a highly discussed technopanic, which will lead me into the next link.

Threat inflation was a common phrase that I seen while researching technopanics. Many times, according to Adam Thier in link number three, these threats are based off false assumptions. This leads to a problem because the media spreads around these false fears that seem so real and cause people to panic. For example, the rate of child abductions from the internet is a lot less than the media leads us to believe. While it is still a problem, no matter how small the number, it is not as common as most of us think.

In the last link relating to technopanics, Forbes gave an idea of what they believe to be some of the drives behind technological fears. The first and most obvious one is generational differences. We all know a baby boomer who has made some comment on millennial minds being destroyed by the internet. Maybe there is some truth to that, but for the most part it is just a generational difference that they don’t understand. Another drive for technopanics is simply the fact that bad news sells. It is always what is wrong with the world that is forecasted on the news, and people buy into it. The human brain is wired to find the negative side of everything, and that is what is happening with technology. Another unfortunate reason that technopanics are happening is because some policy makers are benefiting of other people’s fear. These companies overplay the problem to sell their product, which is the ‘solution’ to “online porn, privacy, or cyber security concerns.”  There are really so many benefits of today's technology but because of the fear of the new so many people are against it.

Phase 3:

Speaking of technopanics, AI systems are one of the most feared advancements that humans experience (in my opinion). Artificial intelligence is a strange topic for me to wrap my mind around because it is so futuristic. AI systems like Sophia the Robot are a bit freaky because it is essentially a fully functional robot. In the video link of Sophia the Robot on Jimmy Fallon the robot is conversing like a normal human and moving like  one as well. There are positive and negative consequences to a world of AI. Some of the benefits that my research showed were it is useful in many situations, can easily modify errors, and it will be perceivable by those who provide it. Some of the negative aspects were that AI is unorganized and unformatted, the volume is too big to condense, and it will always be changing. All of this information, along with incredible visual aids, is from the fifth link.

One specific use for AI is in geoscience. I found a video that interesting explained how AI could be useful in detecting Earth systems that are difficult to find to the human eye. These systems could gather important data that could be used to solve phenomenon such as climate change and more. This is an important idea to me because I am very affectionate toward mother nature, and any positive technological advancement toward the Earth makes me very happy.

The return on equity (ROE) is high for AI systems as well, which is a good thing. This is an indicator that the business is making profit all the while giving back to shareholders simultaneously. According to Simply Wall Street in the sixth link, “intelligent Systems has a better ROE than the average (11%) in the Software industry.” This statistic shows that AI systems are making money, although in the same article it is stated that the stocks may not be the best to invest in. The market of AI is usually more pricey because it has a higher quality, that is important to the future of the stock. If the future has a low estimated success rate it would not be smart to invest a good amount of money into the stock now, because you will lose that money in the future.

Phase two

The future of the body. What do you imagine? Do you think that we will have robotic limbs and touch screen brains? The research that I have done has given me some insight on what technology can really do for our bodies in the future. Let’s start with the negative factors. Cyber security is a growing problem with the growing internet. In the second link regarding the future of the body talks about having certain medical devices like pacemakers, insulin pumps, and MRI scanners that could potentially be hacked into. This is a problem because it has been proven to be possible to do, and just because it is completely unethical doesn’t mean that someone won’t have the nerve. There is talk about having devices implanted into patients so that doctors could dispense medicine to them without having them come into the office. While this is something that I would probably not want to do I can see where it would be of great benefit to someone else. If manufacturers could come up with a high quality security system then there would be few issues with the idea.

The Apple Watch is a new invention by Apple that could become an important aspect to health tracking in the future. The watch tracks heart rate, pulse, activity level and more that many people, sick or healthy, can use to keep order of their body functions. With advancements devices like this could create an array of systems that could help people who are on a specific diet, rehabilitation workout program, and also those with heart diseases. Geekwire, the first link to the future of the body, says that “wearables and smartphones will be the corner store of healthcare in the future.” And also that this product by Apple “would fill two gaps 1) the ability to continuously monitor biometric data and 2) provide a platform to aggregate new healthcare information and services.”

The most interesting link that I found was that of CNBC news. In the link there was a video attached that explained a phenomenon that I had never heard of, sending our brains into space. The man in the video explained this idea as using a laser beam to project the information that is stored in the human brain into outer space where someone or something would be waiting to receive that information. According to CNBC, the reason that we have not yet made this idea real life is “an engineering problem, not a physics problem.” This means that science says sending our sensory information across the universe is possible, we just don’t have the technology yet.

Phase four

The internet of things (IOT) is a connection of many devices through the internet. In the first link relating to IOT Forbes author discusses the impact of this phenomenon on retail stores and processes. According to this link IOT chips only cost $0.10 and are beneficial because they manage excess stock and production, as well as identify channels that customers use. It also plays a role in marketing to advertise certain products such as smartphones and other smart devices. Being connected in these ways are helping airlines customize and enhance their customers experience because they are able to gather data that they have not been able to in the past. Many manufacturing jobs are being taken over by technology, which could be a problem to those who are employed in these positions. Although, IOT is improving the efficiency and productivity in factories, which is a positive aspect for consumers. Healthcare is a huge industry that is being improved by technology everyday. As a nursing student I can say that I am excited for what IOT will bring into the field. With the use of IOT in healthcare, proficiency, effectiveness, patient monitoring and safety are all areas that are receiving benefits. A topic that we directly researched in class this semester was the self driving car. I found this invention to be very beneficial to certain people and to the population as a whole. IOT is making our roads safer by creating AV’s (automated vehicles), making cars easier to access for those who cannot drive or cannot afford it, and also possibly reducing carbon emissions into the atmosphere.

The direct impact of IOT on energy consumption has not yet been officially determined. Eric Hittinger and Paulina Jaramillo, two authors of “IOT: Energy Boon or Bane?”, say that the active power usage will decrease dramatically with the use of IOT. The reason being is that with greater processing power, larger screens, and other advancements the functionality of these devices are increasing.
