Oh that was messy messy. Leave it to Taiwan to give us something we want but in a complicated way we can’t entirely enjoy. That scene between Chen Yi and Ai Di felt reminiscent of WBL: Fighting Mr. Second with some of the visuals mirrored almost exactly.

1 Seven Days: Monday-Thursday & Seven Days: Friday-Sunday

Japan 2015 (grey)

Never doubt my ability to recommend this show. One of the best live action yaois ever made, with perfectly structured angst, fantastic characters and acting, and no problematic tropes (rare in Japanese BL). The leads have excellent chemistry although it’s low heat there’s still some really cute mutual kisses.

2 To My Star

Korea 2021 (Viki)

In the mood for something more grown up? TMS is a touch quirky to get into, but utterly charming once it hits its stride. This is the ultimate grumpy/sunshine pairing plus the most appealing light-filled kitchen of our dreams.

I don't like season 2 but others do. It is very clever.

3 We Best Love: No. 1 For You & Fighting Mr. 2nd

Taiwan 2021 (WeTV)

How about a uni + office BL? Brilliant acting saved this show from a messy (pretty classically manga) narrative with a lot of angst. You have to buy in to a yaoi aesthetic with this one, accept that things move fast and occasionally confuse, but that everything will be okay. It’s the ultimate pining seme meets the ultimate tsundere uke. WBL successfully manages to combine the best elements of Korean, Thai, and Japanese BL as it exists right now. Couple that to the insane chemistry from the leads, and we have one of the greatest BLs of all time, cooking higher heat to a recipe I doubt anyone else will ever be able to replicate since only Taiwan is this flexible.

4 He's Coming to Me

With only 8 8 eps and from GMMTV this is short, high quality and bingable for Thailand. Boy and ghost boy fall in love, must solve ghost’s murder. Peak pining but also pretty tame, features my favorite sweet but important coming out sequence in all BL. The third in my precious triumvirate of unbeatable Thai BLs, that are only nominally BL because the story, acting, and production values are so good.

(Together with Until We Meet Again & A Tale of Thousand Stars - those 2 are longer so I don't consider them as bingable, but if you want something to get really stuck into? Go to town.).

5 Color Rush

A unique paranormal twist elevates this classic high school drama into a pitch-perfect allegory for the queer coming out experience and one of the best BLs of all time (I will fight you on this). Here's my battle essay.

6 HIStory 2: Crossing the Line

Taiwan 2018 (Viki)

Lin Pei Yu directs this sports romance (volleyball) with a good boy/bad boy pairing, and my hands-down favorite of the HIStory franchise. There is no clear seme/uke. Ostensibly it's high school set but Taiwan doesn't care about age appropriate actors. It's a very soft sweet romance with some ridiculously easily overcome conflict. There's great kisses but it's medium heat. The side dishes are the stepbrother trope but they’re very tame, and there’s no other triggers. It's not just my favorite of the franchise, it’s one of my favorite BLs with a perfect happy ending.

(The second H2 is also pretty good.)

7 Cherry Magic

The sweetest fluffiest magical realism BL, packaged as a pinning office romance, very low heat (practically chaste) but the cutest. It’s truly great.

8 Light On Me

Korea 2021 (Viki)

Korea does an elegant pastiche of traditional live action yaoi but all tropes are cleverly deployed to bolster one of the most riveting love triangles ever put on screen… and I don’t like love triangles. LoM strategically tailors classic BL tropes to 2 different semes resulting in pristine pacing, plot, and character development, explicitly serving narrative (not just to tick boxes). LoM is a master class in trope drops. (If you write fanfic or romance you should study this show.) Full review.

9 Be Loved In House: I Do

Taiwan 2021 Viki

A cute classy office set BL with a few plot raised eyebrows, but no other concerns. ALL THE TROPES plus a general sweet softness that’s pretty rare from Taiwan, who usually prefer to go hard, but all their signature domesticity.

10 Lovely Writer

Thailand criticizes itself and the BL industry while simultaneously giving us classic seme/uke with great chemistry in a one-two punch of “we love it, but are we supposed to? and must we think this hard, yet enjoy it SO MUCH?” This show won’t appeal or make sense to those who don’t already have at least some Thai BL watching experience. What Lovely Writer does, at heart, is reexamine Thai BL has done to queerness, but in a very gentle way that has more to do with Thai BL growing up than any actual queer authenticity. It’s not parody or pastiche, but it is self reflective and trying to correct for some chronic mistakes. Whether it is ultimately successful in this matter is going to depend on the watcher’s relationship to BL and queer identity. But that’s what makes this show beautiful, interesting, and thought provoking. And I, for one, applaud the effort even if I didn’t personally connect to the characters.

If I had to choose my 10 favs SamYU finished IRL ones, it will be, not in order:

Exposure Therapy; Yang Yu Teng needs to learn self-love. Sam offers his help. Libido: Yu has a crush on Zihong and it doesn't make filming the WBL series any easier. Despite Zihong is straight, he seems to have no issues with the intimacy between them. But - Yu is the only one with a secret crush, right? Heaven Can't Help Me Now; But deep inside, YU already realized the real reason he doesn’t say no to Zihong. It’s not because he really can’t or that he doesn’t want Zihong to be disappointed. It is because his heart badly wants to fulfill his own selfish desires to be with the man, no matter the cost. He's Not Like That; Zi Hong devotes all his waking hours to excessive ruminations about Yu Teng's giggles and his pretty face. Sadly, he's "not like that", whatever it might mean, and so he does nothing about his unacknowledged attraction until WBL promotions come to an end and he succumbs to misery and longing. That Doesn't Count; Shu Yi loves Shi De to bits, so it’s only natural that Yu Teng comes to love him too. It’s just that there’s a lot of Zi Hong in Shi De and sometimes it gets confusing. We're not very compatible; Zihong is hurt that Yu thinks he's not good at kissing but he's nothing if not proactive about making up for his deficiencies. TWO; in the privacy of his shower, his bedroom, his house, Zihong’s hand can't help but stray down south whenever he thinks of YU and his pretty mouth Fighting Dirty; For those few moments in which he can calmly watch Zi Hong's sleeping face, the soft morning light giving his skin a beautiful glow, Yu is the happiest person alive. Then Zi Hong opens his eyes. At first, he doesn't seem to see much through them, but after blinking a few times, his gaze focuses on Yu. Yu expects confusion. He doesn't think Zi Hong drank so much that his memory would be impaired, but some of it may be unclear. But confusion is only there for a second. What Zi Hong gives him is a straight-up glare. Tear the heart out of this body; All the kisses and touches of the day mingle, even though there are breaks between the takes. Yu’s not sure what happened on which take, doesn’t know which kiss is which, how many there were. His mind is empty when Zi Hong kisses down his neck, his head going down Yu’s clothed chest. Will he stop going down at any point? Yu doesn’t know. Yu can only hold onto his Zi Hong’s arms and let it happen, the sound of Zi Hong’s panting filling the void of Yu’s mind. If it's all in my head tell me now; Lingering feelings and late-night confusion after filming a particularly intense scene in episode two of Fighting Mr 2nd. Hope it helps 🙈

Ok so I decided to do a favorite bl dramas of 2021 even though no ones asked lol, although looking back at everything I watched this year I really didn’t watch that many at least compared to 2020, like I really slacked on my bl watching this year like at one point I was watching 12 or 14 at one time (this included like older completed ones too as well as airing shows) now if I’m watching 5 or 6 I feel overwhelmed which is so frustrating so if I was setting a bl related resolution it would be to get back to that 12-14 territory, anyways I've watched around 20 something dramas give or take some short films and movies but just to focus on the dramas of it all for this list, although I didn’t watch that many this year I still feel like I watched some very good ones and I very very happy with every single show on this list that being said let’s get into it.

**DISCLAIMER** these are not in any specific order like best to least or anything like that cause it would absolutely break my brain and my heart to rank them

**P.S** spoilers for some of the shows I’m gonna talk about if you haven’t got to them yet

#1) WE BEST LOVE: NO. 1 FOR YOU

Ok not much to say about this one just really solid and I really enjoyed it and the fact that it’s only 6 episodes but felt like a full long series is really something, great story, great acting, great chemistry a full chefs kiss

#2) WE BEST LOVE: FIGHTING MR.2ND

Same thing like the first one I really enjoyed it and the angst in this one is next level like just the right amount for me personally, so so good chefs kiss again

#3) I PROMISED YOU THE MOON

Really very good for obvious reasons I liked this one a lot cause we got to see Oh and Teh actually in their relationship and all the struggle that comes with transitioning from dating in high school to dating in college and honestly didn’t really expect them to get back together at the end so that was very nice cause I love a happy ending

#4) HISTORY4: CLOSE TO YOU

Great show love a HIStory so this was a no brainer great acting great chemistry sometimes the story got a little ehhhhh?? But honestly I could look past that

#5) TO MY STAR

Hands down probably my favorite Korean bl or at least top three, I’m SOOOO EXCITED for season 2, can't wait

#6) BE LOVED IN HOUSE: I DO

A very cutesy show perfect balance of enemies-ish to lovers it was just very cute and I really liked that the big bad turned out to not really be a big bad

#7) MANNER OF DEATH

Now technically this one came out in 2020 but I finished it in 2021 so I’m including it

Great show! at first I did not want to watch this show at all like when it was announced I immediately wrote it off cause it just didn’t seem like a show that I would be interested in, I love maxtul and that almost got me but....it was around 4 episodes in that I decided to binge them to get caught up cause I saw some gif that caught my attention and as soon as I started it i was so sad I wasn’t watching it from the beginning it was literally so good. I’m very excited for whatever maxtul next thing is cause they are do something together right? It’s something not sure of the details, fingers crossed for a sequel tho

Ok now for the next two I felt kinda weird about putting ongoing series on this list cause part of brain thinks well yeah it’s good right now but it could get bad or have an ending that completely ruins the whole show for me, which doesn’t happen often but happens (*cough cough* modc) but honestly these two are just so so so good that there is no way that I couldn’t put them on this list

#8) PAINT WITH LOVE

Paint with love honestly really took me for a shock cause I was not expecting to like it SO much like it's got some sort of Je ne sais quoi like I have no idea why I like it so much like I love the story, it’s so funny, I love all the characters, got my girl Yiwha from together with me you couldn't ask for anything more perfect, the chemistry I love it it’s all so cute, it blows my mind that some people don't like this show

#9) BAD BUDDY

Do we really even got to talk about tho one like if you’re watching bad buddy right now and not enjoying it enthusiastically then babe something is wrong with you, I could name so many fucking reasons why this is the best fucking show ever but then this post would be even longer than it already is, if ykyk

#10) MY BEAUTIFUL MAN

Now this bitch probably the most shocking to me that I even enjoyed this a little bit let alone put this on my overall 2021 list like huh? I absolutely hate the whipping boy trope it’s makes me sad and angry and makes me feel bad for everyone involved but this shit right here was in-fucking-credible now I didn’t get obsessive over this one until episode 4 cause the first three episodes were all iffy but not enough for me to call it quits so I kept going and bitch let me tell you episode 4 made up for all the shit in episodes 1-3 like episodes 4-6 oh my lord I was literally so close to not even starting this show and I’m very very very glad that I just randomly had some free time and wanted to watch something cause, and not to be to dramatic or anything but if I would have left this earth without having experienced this show what a disappointing waste of living fucking fire, like watch it if you havent cause you won't regret it

Ok there you have it long as hell and probably the most energy, preparation, and effort I ever put into a tumblr post in a long time but worth it cause while I didn’t watch that many bls/gls this year I watched some really good ones and I’m very happy with what I did watch, im looking forward to all the new ones to come honestly a little stressed about it low key cause there are so many shows to check out but very excited nonetheless

idk if anyone else picked up on this but when shu yi says he has a girlfriend and goes on about how women are better, it was like he was taunting shi de. trying to hint at or allude to the fact that he “knows” he cheated without words. obviously shi de didn’t pick up on it because he didn’t cheat on shu yi, much less with a women, but i’m thinking shu yi didn’t want to make him jealous as much as he wanted to make him feel guilty. jealousy was just a bonus lol.

i also think the moment in the beginning where shi de brings him into his office the first time and apologizes, and shu yi responds with a softer more vulnerable “for what?” that he was expecting shi de to apologize for “cheating”. and when he didn’t he lashed out and that led to taunting him later at his house, he wants him to own up to it.
