The Benefits of Using Waterproof Duffle Bags
Duffle bags have long been a favorite for travelers and outdoor enthusiasts due to their versatility and spacious design. However, when it comes to durability and protection, waterproof duffle bags, especially those made from waxed canvas, stand out. In this article, we’ll delve into the numerous benefits of using waterproof duffle bags and why they are a must-have for anyone seeking reliability and style.
Why Choose a Waterproof Duffle Bag?
Waterproof duffle bags offer several advantages over their non-waterproof counterparts. Here are some of the key benefits:
1. Protection from the Elements
The primary benefit of a waterproof duffle bag is its ability to protect your belongings from rain, snow, and moisture. Whether you’re caught in a sudden downpour, crossing a river, or dealing with high humidity, a waterproof duffle bag ensures that your clothes, electronics, and other essentials remain dry.
2. Durability
Waterproof duffle bags, particularly those made from waxed canvas, are incredibly durable. Waxed canvas is a robust material that can withstand harsh conditions and rough handling. It’s resistant to abrasions, punctures, and tears, making it ideal for outdoor adventures and frequent travel.
3. Versatility
A waterproof duffle bag is versatile enough to be used in various settings, from weekend getaways to gym visits, camping trips, and daily commutes. Its adaptability makes it a practical choice for those who need a reliable bag for multiple purposes.
4. Easy Maintenance
Maintaining a waterproof duffle bag is straightforward. Waxed canvas bags can be easily cleaned with a damp cloth and occasionally re-waxed to maintain their water-resistant properties. This ease of maintenance ensures that your bag remains in excellent condition for years.
Benefits of Waxed Canvas Waterproof Duffle Bags
Waxed canvas waterproof duffle bags offer specific advantages that make them a superior choice:
1. Aesthetic Appeal
Waxed canvas has a timeless, rugged look that combines vintage charm with modern functionality. Over time, it develops a unique patina that enhances its character, making each bag truly one-of-a-kind.
2. Eco-Friendly
Waxed canvas is an environmentally friendly material. It’s made from natural fibers coated with wax, which means it doesn’t involve the use of harmful chemicals. This makes it a sustainable option for eco-conscious consumers.
3. Breathability
Unlike many synthetic materials, waxed canvas is breathable. This means it can repel water while allowing moisture from inside the bag to escape, preventing the buildup of mold and unpleasant odors.
4. Customizable
Waxed canvas bags can be easily re-waxed to enhance their water resistance. This allows users to maintain and even improve the bag’s protective qualities over time, ensuring it remains functional and effective.
Tips for Maintaining Your Waxed Canvas Waterproof Duffle Bag
To ensure your waxed canvas waterproof duffle bag lasts as long as possible, follow these maintenance tips:
1. Regular Cleaning
Wipe your bag with a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris. Avoid using harsh detergents or machine washing, as these can strip the wax coating and compromise the bag’s waterproof properties.
2. Re-Waxing
Periodically re-wax your bag to maintain its water resistance. Use a quality canvas wax and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the best results. This will keep your bag looking good and functioning well.
3. Proper Storage
Store your bag in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. This helps prevent the material from drying out or becoming discolored. Stuff the bag with soft materials to help it retain its shape when not in use.
FAQs
Q: Are all waterproof duffle bags made from waxed canvas? A: No, waterproof duffle bags can be made from various materials, including nylon, polyester, and PVC. Waxed canvas is a popular choice due to its durability and eco-friendly properties.
Q: How often should I re-wax my waxed canvas duffle bag? A: It depends on how frequently you use the bag and the conditions it’s exposed to. Generally, re-waxing once or twice a year is sufficient to maintain its water resistance.
Q: Can I machine wash my waxed canvas duffle bag? A: No, machine washing can remove the wax coating and damage the fabric. It’s best to clean your bag with a damp cloth and mild soap if necessary.
Q: What makes waxed canvas eco-friendly? A: Waxed canvas is made from natural cotton fibers coated with beeswax or other natural waxes. It’s biodegradable and doesn’t involve the use of harmful chemicals in its production.
Q: Are waxed canvas bags suitable for heavy rain? A: Yes, waxed canvas bags are highly water-resistant and can protect your belongings in heavy rain. However, prolonged exposure to water can eventually lead to seepage, so it’s best to avoid continuous downpours if possible.
Conclusion

These bags are versatile, eco-friendly, and easy to maintain, making them an excellent choice for anyone looking for a reliable and stylish solution for their travel and daily needs.

Hi Christina! I hope you can help me out here. I'm looking to buy a nice tote bag, and I really like the Longchamp Le Pliage large and the Victorinox Victoria Business tote- however, both of them are unavailable in my country. Can you please recommend some similar-looking totes? It would be nice if you could recommend nylon/fabric totes, as I am not a fan of leather. Thank you so much!
Without knowing where you're located, it's a little bit hard to recommend similar totes that are available in your country. But try:
NNEE Water Resistant Light Weight Nylon Tote Bag on Amazon
Baginc Rachele Nylon Large Bag Black
YALUXE Tote for Women Leather Nylon Shoulder Bag on Amazon
Baggallini Avenue Tote Top Handle Bag

ECOSUSI Duffle Bag Weekender Bag Nylon Overnight Bag Travel Tote
The Catalina Deluxe Tote
LL Bean Waxed-Canvas Tote Bag

Also take a look at the totes from baggu here.
There are a few on AliExpress, but I can't vouch for the quality:
Nylon Beach Tote Bag and Foldable Waterproof Nylon Bag
If you're willing to navigate TaoBao, try: Classic Long Handle Foldable Shoulder Handbag
The Victorinox Victoria 2.0 Deluxe Business Tote and Longchamp Women's Le Pliage Neo Black Large are also both on Amazon, if you do want to buy one, and you can also find them on resale websites like eBay, Poshmark, and DePop.

ULA Mens was established in 2005 by Eric Cooper-Founder and Chief Designer. The urban luxury activewear line is based in Los Angeles, and produces hi-end activewear functional for both active and casual lifestyles. The retro-influenced line consists of a unique mix of 70's ands 80's inspired tracksuits, jackets, pants, contoured tops, sporty shorts, and fashionable accessories. Each garment and accessory is highly crafted and uses the most advance construction and technical materials. The activewear textiles are selected to enhance performance and are effective at wicking moisture, resisting wind, blocking UV rays, and enhancing mobility. Eric comes from an extensive background in design, fashion retail, and fitness, and acquired the idea to start the ULA line after noticing a shortage of fashionable men’s activewear while shopping. Stylish activewear has become an increasingly important staple in the wardrobes of those men who lack the time needed to change after working out before moving on to their busy schedules. This was a motivating factor that encouraged Eric to introduce the line and expand on the availability of sustainable and fashionable men's activewear. He married his knowledge of fashion, exercise, and design to create a collection that would bridge the fashion gap between active and social lifestyles.
The premiere collection 'Iconic' collection was released in 2012, and the retro inspired silhouettes pays homage to the fashion sensibility of two American icons—legendary daredevil-devil, Evel Knievel, edgy and pioneering hip-hop artist, LL Cool J. The style of both icons had a big influenced on Eric when designing the collection. Soon ULA Will be launching its second collection 'Billboard,' ‘Pico,’ and ‘ULA Denim.’ Cooper uses his red-label “Billboard” line to promote his ideology of “Forces of Fitness.” This ideology states that three elements essential for achieving total fitness are focus, energy, and power. These “Forces of Fitness” serve as the banner to the line. The clothing displays ticker tape word bands reading “focus,” “energy,” and “power.” The strong visual appeal and branding of the collection is intended to evoke the idea of walking billboards displaying Cooper’s ideology. The word bands are accentuated by bold colors highlighting ULA’s 4, 5, and 10 signature stripes as well as word graphics. ULA’s trademark racy stripes serve as a symbolic representation for flow pathways.
ULA’s line includes the black-label “Pico” collection, which is inspired by Los Angeles’ 80s biker culture. This collection consists of an array of hip and masculine styled outerwear and t-shirts featuring an urban color palette of black, white, carbon, and khaki. The key looks in the collection are the “biker jacket” and “biker vest” styles which are made from water resistant waxed cotton canvas and detailed with exposed nickel zipper pockets, side vents and cuffs. Highly embellished t-shirts with lace-up plackets, hoods, epaulets and boatnecks provide an escape from the classic construction. The line’s look is finished with banded cuffs and waistbands.
The final collection in the line is “ULA Jeans,” the brand’s introductory denim collection that coincides with the ‘Pico’ collection. Inspired by the chic and trend-setting designer jeans of the 80s, ULA jeans includes an assortment of fashionable styles in various shades of indigo. The jeans come in an assortment of fashionable styles: a fitted straight leg “4-stripe” jean, a skinny “Street jean” and a skinny and racy window-paned “Biker jean.” The line uses multiple fabrics that support comfort, improves function and enhance movement. Accessories to the line include the ULA “trucker cap” with a snap-back, ribbed skull cap, “ticker tape” cotton canvas ring belt and nylon zip-top utility duffle bag. ULA will be opening the on-line store ULAMENS.COM in January

RYU’s line of backpacks offer style and function for exploring the city or weekends away
Yes, it’s Bag Week, where we celebrate all the best bags of the year here at TechCrunch. And there is little more satisfying than finding a basic black one that’s functional, stylish and unique. Luckily, Canadian urban athletic apparel maker RYU makes three such bags, and while each one has its own particular appeal depending on what you’re looking for in a backpack, they’re also all winners that elevate the basic black backpack to new heights.
Quick Pack Lux 18L ($185)
RYU’s ‘just right’ offering for me is the Quick Pack Lux 18L capacity bag that’s pretty much perfect as a general use day pack in terms of cargo space, and that can also serve well for a one or two-night trip, depending on how lightly you pack.
The RYU’s signature feature, and what makes it my favorite daypack in terms of everyday use around the city, is its profile a silhouette which is made all the better because RYU uses an internal molded shell to ensure that it never flattens down or loses its shape, regardless of how full or empty the bag actually is. This is actually a huge selling point for me, and one that makes the RYU Quick Pack 18L almost certain to become my go-to daily bag. Inside, there are a few pockets, including a laptop sleeve that can fit up to a 15-inch MacBook Pro – another rarity in a daypack this low-profile.
In addition to the integrated frame, the Quick Pack Lux is kitted out with premium materials, like the leather accent patch on the top flap, leather shoulder straps, and a outer layer of poly-cotton blend that covers a wax-treated canvas, and nylon interior for water resistance and durability. The materials definitely feel premium, though the outermost layer resembles kind of a yoga pant material, and in my house definitely attracts and picks up my dog’s easily shed white hairs with reckless abandon. I’m more than happy to get out the lint roller once and a while as a trade-off for just how good looking the bag is, however.
[gallery ids="1870659,1870660,1870661"]
It wears slightly long, but tight to the back (for reference when sizing up the photos above, I’m 6’2″ and quite a bit of that is torso). The removable chest strap helps keeps the profile pretty seamless, and there’s a handle on top for easy carrying when not on the back.
Another unique feature of the Quick Pack Lux is that opens from the front, with the flap at the top unbuckling to reveal two zippers that run the length of the bag. Undo these, and you get basically a duffle-style cargo loading method, which is great for arranging your stuff without having to layer or dig down as you would in a top loading pack.
Locker Pack Lux 24L ($215)
The Locker Pack Lux is the more spacious version of the Quick Pack Lux, with 6L extra volume for packing your gear. It’s designed more for those overnights or two day trips, and yet it doesn’t really add that much in the way of bulk if you’re looking for something that can serve flexibly as both day pack and weekender.
The Locker Pack Lux has the same materials combination as the Quick Pack, but is a bit longer and so is probably better suited for taller people. It still offers a very slim profile, and has the same internal structural components that mean it’ll keep its shape, but it has a bit more leeway for expansion, too, letting you pack in a surprising amount of stuff via the front-loading, double zipper stowage and packing flap.
[gallery ids="1870681,1870682,1870683,1870674"]
Unlike the Quick Pack Lux, you also get external access to the laptop compartment in the Locker Pack, which gives you an easy way to get at up to a 15-inch notebook. The leather-accented top flap closes down over this compartment, too, to give you some protection against the elements in the case of light showers (RYU also sells a dedicated rain hood separately).
Express Pack 15L ($90)
The Express Pack is the smallest of these RYU backpacks in terms of packing volume, but it’s also probably the best option when it comes to an all-around city daypack that will fit you regardless of height and frame. The extremely minimal aesthetic is great for the city, especially with the polyurethane outer coating that wraps a middle canvas layer for the bag’s body.
This is a very lightweight bag, but the internal pocket can actually fit a lot of stuff when needed, and there’s a single woven pocket on one side of the exterior for stowing a water bottle. This adds an asymmetrical look which is also pretty cool looking. Inside, there’s a zippered mesh block and a fully zippered front pocket for separating your sweaty gym gear, plus a laptop compartment that can fit a full, 15-inch MacBook Pro without issue.
[gallery ids="1870704,1870710,1870711,1870697"]
The bag is comfortable to wear, but doesn’t have the internal structure of the other two, so if it’s empty it’ll hug a lot closer to the body. If there’s one thing I’d change about it, it’s the RYU branding – but it does actually recede to being barely visible in less direct lighting, and is more subtle overall than it looks here.
Overall, RYU’s bag lineup is impressive, and offers something for everyone. The Vancouver-based company has done a great job of delivering highly functional designs that also offer great style with pretty much universal appeal. The company also offers non-Lux versions of both the Quick Pack and the Locker Pack, which drop the leather accents and embedded waxed canvas, but which also offer some decent discounts if the prices above strike you as too high.

MUMBAI DAIRY – TRAVELLING WITH MY FAVOURITE COMPANION – A DUFFLE BAG
A trip to Mumbai means travelling in crowded areas, humid weather and laying on the beaches to name a few. Along in this trip, I found my best travel companion; a Trendy Duffle bag that is rugged and strong, just the way I like.
The city that never sleeps, India’s economic capital; Mumbai had been on my bucket list for quite long. So, I packed my stuff in suitcase and kept essentials in my new favourite duffle bag and moved along to Mumbai
Once I reached my dream city, I started with south Mumbai as I am fascinated with Bollywood and South Mumbai holds a lot of private shooting studios. I packed my day’s essentials in my duffle and was good to go. My Duffle Bag is made of heavy duty canvas fabric that is wax treated making it more rugged and strong and also resistant to water. It has soft cotton Webbing Shoulder Strap which is adjustable in length making it easier to carry conveniently across shoulder.
My first stop was Crawford Market. I started with breakfast and brought some exotic fruits to snack along my way. I started shopping with my favourite cake making equipment, got some toys too for back home. My next stop was the famous chor bazaar, it is a must travel experience when visiting Mumbai. The market starts in morning itself and was more crowded than I expected. Luckily I was carrying a duffle bag that I can zip up to close and pull in front of me, keeping my essentials secure and my hands free.
Now, for the rest of the day, I had booked a bollywood tour. I visited dubbing studios, Wall of Fame gallery, and the Bollywood Museum, which boasts of a wide array of costumes used in famous Bollywood movies that you can actually try on. As I clicked lots of photographs, I realised that my stuffed duffle bag was making a style statement in itself. Few people, in fact checked with me for my bag. After the tour I went for sightseeing of famous bollywood celebrity’s house in and around Mumbai.
Next day, I planned for beach tours. The duffle bag is high on utility with two external zip pockets on the sides and one internal zip pocket on the inside fabric lining. I kept my valuables in internal zip pocket and started my day by visiting Chowpatty Beach. I had a calming time sitting on the sandy beach. Another good feature of my duffle bag is that it’s coated canvas is water resistant. I easily removed any collected water on the bag and further moved towards Linking Road, a street shopping paradise. I loaded lots of western wear apparels, footwear and accessories in my duffle, a result of my bargaining spree. Satisfied, I wanted to board a local train too, so again securing my duffle in front of me; I was able to board train till Dadar.
Dadar Kabutarkhana is famous for maharashtrian sari, utensils and cosmetic products at low price. The market was full of small as well as big silk saree showrooms which always remain crowded by locals.
As there was so much left to explore in the city, I quickly made my way for Gateway of India, the magnificent monument on the shores of Arabian Sea. My duffle is just the right size, so I packed in a few snacks along with few accessories like cap, sunscreen and a hand towel. My last stop remained a relaxing stroll along Marine Drive, Mumbai’s most well-known waterfront avenue, enjoying the shoreline of Back Bay on a cobbled street lined with trees.
My duffle bag remained my close companion in this trip and I am glad that even after being overfilled, I could easily carry it over my shoulder for the entire day due to its broad adjustable strap. It was so durable that I did’t have to worry about being in a crowded place, or travelling in local trains or taking a stroll on the famous marine drive or enjoying myself on sandy beaches. With its rugged printed details, metal studs at the bottom, usage of broad printed shoulder strap; I even caught my fashionistas attention.
I will be using this great duffle bag for my upcoming trips and sharing my experiences with you all. Thanks

2017 Gift Guide: Travel
When I’m traveling I try to take a moment and appreciate the fact that I even get to travel to some pretty amazing places. However, travel annoyances like lost luggages, delayed flights, and seat mates with poor travel etiquette can make even the most exciting trip seem like a chore, at least until I get to my destination. Here’s a round of items that will make anyone’s time in transit a little more comfortable, enjoyable and efficient – some of which I always have on stand-by before a trip, all of which make a great gift for the jet-setting friend or family member in your life.
Skincare Travel Kit by Peet Rivko \\\ $46 Created by Joanna Peet and praised by her childhood friend Aubrey Plaza, this natural skincare set helps you cleanse, balance and moisturize your skin when you’re on the go. I really enjoyed using the entire line because it’s made without the usual troublemakers (like parabens, sulfates, silicones and petroleums) but also harsh ingredients that seem beneficial but can actually be problematic (like essential oils and floral extracts). The set also comes with a travel-sized Baggu pouch for easy storage and transport.
m37 Watch by Uniform Wares \\\ $335 Carrying a watch is essential in-flight when you’re trying to align yourself with your destination’s time zone. While I do have a few trusty watches, Jaime shared this one on Instagram and now I want one too.
Mini Suitcase with The Field Set by Away \\\ $45 I own two of these little guys and they’re kind of like a mini version of my regular-sized suitcase. I’m always pleasantly surprised by how many toiletries + cosmetics I can fit in here (although I am practically sitting on it like my normal suitcase to fit as many things as I can). This Essential Set comes with a few items you’ll enjoy while traveling, like a pillow spray and grapefruit face cleanser.
Cruz Scarf by Block Shop Textiles \\\ $120 I never ever leave for the plane without a scarf packed. They have a permanent place in my carry-on because they keep me warm and can be rolled up as pillow. I am also slightly germaphobic so I like draping them across hotel pillows just for a piece of mind. This one from Blockshop Textiles is hand block printed by 5th generation master printers in Bagru for a unique touch.
Leather Backpack by Moop \\\ $397 Traveling is just easier with a backpack than a bag, especially when you’re hauling a laptop, chargers and cables, a camera and lens. This Backpack no.2 is made in small batches in Los Angeles with a leather exterior (which mean it’ll gradually develop a nice patina) and lined with water resistant Cordura® nylon to keep your contents dry.
Duffle by KILLSPENCER \\\ $600 If you want more space, KILLSPENCER’s newest utilitarian bag, the Duffle, is a luxurious gift to splurge on for your favorite globetrotter. It comes in leather, waxed canvas, nylon, Korean War era waxed canvas, and tarpaulin, and can be customized with a monogram.
Le Sud Overnight Weekender by Cuyana \\\ $215 Jaime and I both have this weekender by Cuyana that we love using for quick trips. There’s just enough space for a quick Friday-Sunday trip which is exactly why I love it. It prevents me from overpacking. I added a monogrammed leather charm to mine for some extra flair.
Packing Cubes by Wit & Delight for Target \\\ $20 I need another set of packing cubes since my husband took one of my two sets. This striped option in mint green looks great and is just malleable enough for me to try to stuff five sweaters into (did I mention I have an overpacking problem?).
Sleep Well Travel Pillow by HAY, available at MoMA Design Store \\\ $45 A travel pillow kind of seems like a dorky, cumbersome thing to carry before you board the plane but once you’re seated, it’s the kind of item you are so glad you packed. This one by HAY is filled with tiny polystyrene balls to keep you ergonomically comfortable on those 14 hour flights.
Stainless Steel Bottle by Cheeky \\\ $23 Staying hydrated is important in places with recycled air so this bottle is always nearby. I like it because it’s affordable, keeps my drinks cold for 24 hours and comes in a few cool designs like this black and white paint stroke option.
Reboot Travel Kit by The Nue Co. \\\ $160 This new travel kit is launching just in time for the holidays. The kit was created to help you before, during, and after traveling include: prebiotics + probiotics to take before travel, sleep drops, a magnesium spray to help you relax, deference drops for an immune boost, and a caffeine boost for when you get to your destination.
Arlo Skye x Sight Unseen Luggage Collection \\\ From $375 Luggage (Arlo Skye) meets art (Antti Kekki) meets design (Sight Unseen). This collaboration brings together three different worlds to create luggage that will be unmistakable on the baggage carousel. Learn more about it here.
