Didn't think I'd be here again, but hello friends, and welcome back to another round of Bad-Faith Engagement! This time with a comment on this post by the lovely @jiangwanyinscatmom. Strap in folks, cause this one's a doozy.

Let’s start with the original post:

In this post, Orion says that Feng Xin is a weak friend because:

He was not a friend but a follower

He abandoned Xie Lian because he saw Xie Lian as his “fallen lord”

A challenger then enters the ring, “compelled” to argue in Feng Xin’s defense. What are their defenses? Feng Xin is not a weak friend because:

He promises to never leave Xie Lian after Mu Qing abandons them

The queen says that Feng Xin still held affection for Xie Lian

Yes Feng Xin did, in fact, abandon Xie Lian, but it’s only because Xie Lian told him to “stop following” and he can’t conceive of himself as not being a follower, otherwise, he “never conceived of leaving”

Feng Xin loves Xie Lian as a friend

Read this list, then reread Orion’s post and count how many of the challenger's points correlate to an argument Orion made. If you said “one” (or one and a half), then you are correct! Only the challenger’s first point—“Feng Xin promises to never leave Xie Lian”—and the third point which feeds off of the first could serve as a rebuttal to a point that Orion actually made—“Feng Xin abandons Xie Lian.” Therefore, I will not be addressing the second and fourth points—Feng Xin held genuine affection for Xie Lian”—because that is not an argument Orion ever made, thus, they do not need to be addressed. However, this is when it starts to get… messy.

Can you spot the contradiction? If you said the challenger’s first and third points, again, then give yourself a pat on the back! The challenger initially argued that Feng Xin saying that he would never leave Xie Lian means that he is not a weak friend, but then when they acknowledge that Feng Xin did, in fact, leave Xie Lian, breaking his promise, they try to argue that this is, in fact, Xie Lian’s fault for telling him “not to follow.” They claim that, had Xie Lian not “told him to leave” (which is not an accurate statement, but that is for another day), then Feng Xin would have not even conceived of abandoning his friend. They also claim that the 800 years in which Feng Xin did not speak or seek Xie Lian out was “on Xie Lian’s terms.” However, their own screenshotted evidence betrays them:

In the first screenshot, read the sentence right before the challenger’s highlight. The queen says, “I could sense that it’s not that he didn’t want to go…” which means that Feng Xin did, in fact, want to leave and that it was pretty obvious that he stayed only because of old affection, not because he “couldn’t conceive of leaving.” In the second screenshot, Feng Xin is questioning his loyalty, once again, in the section right before the challenger’s highlight, proving that he is capable of and willing to question his loyalty to his friend, that he does not see it as loyalty to “a friend” but to a superior. This is what Xie Lian is addressing with his "stop following" comment, but if one only reads the highlights and the challenger’s “explanations,” you would miss this very simple acknowledgment on Feng Xin from both he and the queen. In no except does Xie Lian explicitly tell Feng Xin to leave, nor does he tell Feng Xin to never seek him out or contact him again. When they meet again 800 years later, Feng Xin has no issue seeking a newly re-ascended Xie Lian out, then, even when Xie Lian didn’t seek him out. The challenger even has the audacity to call this a “fallacy of omission” that Orion would claim that Feng Xin left of his own desire, despite the fact that the cherry-picked segments they provided as evidence clearly prove Orion’s point. And it gets worse.

Continuing on this “fallacy of omission” argument, the challenger brings onto the field this piece of evidence as "proof" that the miscommunication between Feng Xin and Xie Lian is that Xie Lian feels like Feng Xin needs to be compensated but that Feng Xin “doesn’t think Xie Lian needs to compensate him anymore”:

However, what the challenger, themself, strangely omits is that Feng Xin does indeed ask for compensation after this:

Now that the subject was raised, Feng Xin hesitated again. After a pause, he opened his mouth, hemming and hawing and scratching at his head as he stammered out, “Actually, it’s... Your Highness, do you still have any money on you? Or something that can be pawned?” Xie Lian was perplexed that he’d ask such a foolish question at a time like this. “Huh? Why do you ask?” Feng Xin was sweating, but he replied boldly, “It’s nothing... Just... If you happen to have some, can you...lend it to me?” Xie Lian laughed bitterly. “Do you really think I have anything?” Feng Xin sighed. “I didn’t think so.” After giving it some thought, Xie Lian asked, “Didn’t I give you that golden belt?” “That’s not enough,” Feng Xin mumbled. “Far from it...” Xie Lian was shocked. “Feng Xin? What exactly did you do? How could a golden belt not be enough to cover whatever you need? Did you beat someone up and need to pay them off? Tell me?” Feng Xin came back to himself and quickly said, “Oh no! Don’t take this to heart. I was only asking!” Xie Lian pressed him over and over, but Feng Xin still swore everything was fine. Finally, Xie Lian said with worry, “Well, if there’s anything, you must tell me. We can think of a solution together.” “Don’t worry about me,” Feng Xin said. “There’s no way a solution will just fall from the sky. Your Highness, you just focus on solving your own problems!” When he mentioned that topic, Xie Lian’s heart sank again.

He initially rejects the valuables Xie Lian tries to give him, only to circle back around later to ask for them to sell for what we now know was to buy time with Jian Lan. Xie Lian even offers to help him solve it "together," but Feng Xin brushes him off. To claim that Xie Lian believed that he owed Feng Xin out of simple “miscommunication”—because Feng Xin was simply too pure and loyal to conceive of asking Xie Lian for money—is a wild misconstruing of both this scene and the fractures in the pair’s relationship.

The challenger also takes issue with Orion’s use of the word coward, for which they are bold enough to pull up a dictionary to “disprove” the description:

Despite the last two definitions that they pulled matching the description of actions they have acknowledged Feng Xin as having committed, they claim that “coward” is not a characteristic that Feng Xin embodies because… they say it isn’t. But do they really? Finally, my last piece to be deconstructed, the last three paragraphs of this poorly managed “meta”:

Let’s recap: Orion’s reasoning for saying that Feng Xin was a “weak friend” were:

He was not a friend but a follower

He abandoned Xie Lian because he saw Xie Lian as his “fallen lord”

The challenger states these very points as their closing argument, as clearly shown in the highlights. So if they agreed with Orion, why make such a condescending “meta” about how Orion is wrong about all of their points, just to restate them as their own conclusion? Simple: it’s not that the challenger disagrees with Orion, at all; it's that they disagree with Orion's non-sympathy for Feng Xin. Feng Xin did leave Xie Lian, "but it wasn't his fault." Feng Xin did break his promise, "but it wasn't his fault." They believe that if a character must be faulted for Feng Xin’s behaviors and actions, then it must be someone else rather than the character (Feng Xin) committing to those actions, themself. Because Jun Wu is the ultimate villain of the novel, then he must be at fault for Feng Xin’s abandonment, and it is not “cowardice” or “desertion” or “fleeing” because had things not gotten tough, obviously Feng Xin would have stayed. “Weak” is simply too harsh a critique of a fair-weather friend, even if it is, in fact, true.

His strong accent was immediately endearing, and you found your eyes following him when he left the room to get back to his class.

He had caught up to you on that Friday of your first work week, brushed a few of spring’s cherry blossom petals out of his hair like some dreamy anime character, and asked if he could maybe offer his help with improving your Japanese. The best method, he concluded, would be by going out after school for a coffee. The relaxed atmosphere of a coffee shop always helped him think, he added with a grin.

“That sounds a lot like a date.”, you had joked, and felt your cheeks growing hot at the brazen statement. Of course, you knew better than to think that a Japanese man would be that forward.

“Then you would be right.”, he had said and given you one of his smiles that already had you weak in the knees.

The dates quickly became more frequent. He would walk you home afterward, and you’d text until late in the night - all in the name of teaching, of course. But after a month of having him as your private tutor, he finally worked up the courage to confess, and you were finally his.

Watching Voltron for the 1st time: Ep 7-11

Finished up season 1 today while doing some paperwork and chores, we're on it! I'll also include a little season wrap up of what I think so far at the end!

Also wow Zarkon being the original black paladin is a nice detail. I like that. Keith being all victory or death about killing him is great too. Shiro and Keith definitely got the bulk of the planning on through line and character.

I feel like they don't quite have Keith figured out. Keith went full scorched earth to find Shiro. He shouldn't be the one (with both the Allura case and with Pidge earlier on) to be trying to hold people back. Of all of them lmao. Esp bc they don't treat him narratively like he's being a hypocrite, and that's never emphasized narratively. Imo they could either get him on hypocrisy textually or not have him being that guy! Because he's just, NOT! It's over and over again that we see him be "fuck it we ball I need to grab my emotional support Shiro" and so having him be against that for other people just. Doesn't make sense unless they want him to address that hypocrisy. Which. They don't seem to yet.

I think though they have a lot of ideas with Keith and Shiro, which I totally get bc they're awesome characters, I could use a little more oomph being given to Hunk and Lance. Pidge I think they have down SOLID, besides botching the "She's a girl" reveal, but Hunk and Lance both feel a little fuzzily defined to me.

I totally get that this is a result of having a big ensemble cast, but a big ensemble cast doesn't mean that your characters can't be super distinct and focused! Obviously Avatar the Last Airbender is an easy example pull for this, but another obvious one for me is Star Wars the Clone Wars. In having a ton of characters, it can be easy to lose sight of making them distinct in service of a plot, and I feel like that happens a lot to Lance and Hunk. I think either having Pidge/Hunk/Lance/Allura/Coran fade into the background and refocusing on the two most robust charcters OR bringing those 5 more into the foreground and giving them really robust motivations and arcs would work!

A lot of the humor falls flat for me. I'm not the target audience for it obviously, but, idk, it just doesn't do it for me.

I feel like the pacing is a little rough, as is the overall direction. Multi-episode arcs are cool, but I think for being the first season the show would've benefitted a lot from episodic adventures and splitting off the characters into small groups like they did to find the lions more! It's season 1! And then save the multi-episode arc for the season finale and have that be the big shift in tone where the Zarkon threat Gets Real. It brings the stakes up!

Are we really going to have to watch the same sequence every time they form Voltron?

All in all I think there's some things I'd do very differently, some things I really like. This was a promising start. I love cheesy space shows. I think this show would really have benefitted from giving us a little more to work with from a character standpoint. The fight scenes are awesome, don't get me wrong, but because we don't spend as much individual time with each paladin they can feel a little flattened. Again, I think keeping the storylines in season one to be pretty contained within an episode would've been a better move than having multiple multi-episode, plot heavy ones.

Additionally I think... a lot of exposition is given and it would be AWESOME to have less time spent on that and more on just immersion! We don't NEED to know everything about every world or new piece of tech! This show tells us a lot, I'd like for it to show us a whole lot more. You can do more! They could like, explain many many details about the Balmera and how it works OR they could have the paladins come to that realization themselves through interacting with it. One of those is much more memorable!

But all of that said, I'm still excited to see where they go with it! I might start season 2 later tonight, I need a little break from screens (almost 2 hours of show is a lot for me) and I am definitely curious about where they'll all end up on the other end of the wormhole.

I bet nobody else in her class will be writing about OSHA certifications for residential electric. Worked on the V and Y quilt squares. The Yak is going to look amazing once I get the fabric frayed out to look like a heavy coat of fluff. What does an x-ray tetra look like? Hmm.

As much as Beomgyu and Yumi had been exchanging snarky and witty bantering for most of their friendship, never had he had someone to match him intellectually at the same level. Of course, it’s different with the imbeciles and how they throw mindless crap as boys (I’m looking at you, Yeonjun).

With Yumi, it always felt different. They walk at the same pace, and he feels they resonate on the same wavelength. He confirms she reciprocates the amused eye rolls she throws despite being sharp with her words at him. But she’s also soft on the edges. Deep in her heart, she’s a big softie, like a darn Hufflepuff she is.

Even how nice and radiating she can be to know when and how to say the right thing at the right instances.

As simple as it is, it's as if he had been charmed by her smile since the beginning when they had crossed paths one fine day in a Charms joint class between the Puffs and Lions.

From how gradually she grew up with him from being this shy girl to a more, clever partner for their duo. It has been an interesting process to be part of her development. Though, for Beomgyu, she will always be the soft and shy girl he came to love.

Or is it that I haven't matured yet to be at the same pace as her?

Is it wrong to think this way as if I do not accept the changes in Yumi? But that’s not it…

He grows uncertain of himself.

But all Beomgyu knows is that he doesn't want to lose Yumi, he really, really likes her.

“How about start by being nice to her?” Taehyun states the obvious, but it added a form of restitute with his Ravenclaw charm, that you can’t blatantly deny that the others may be bypassing the dumb basics.

Yeonjun nods along. Obviously still preoccupied with the meal in front of him while observing the group at the table.

Beomgyu had to hold back an eye roll at the common sense. As if he didn’t already think of that, and what in Merlin’s realm are they thinking I am doing?

“But I am nice to her,” he says with emphasis, as Beomgyu knows he definitely needs it.

Just by the looks of Kai and company at his declaration, they say otherwise.

“Yeah, if you consider being nice to her as ‘pranks and giggles’.” Soobin almost sneers.

Yeonjun on the other hand, full-on sneers.

“Even the tantamount teasing of getting on her nerves.” Yeonjun picks apart the food on his plate with his fork.

“Yeah, that's a way to make someone mark in your mind 24/7,” Kai says that with a soft blow. He can’t help but let out that teasing despite flipping over his Potions book.

“And the endless bantering...” Soobin rolls his eyes, he can’t even begin how much he gets sandwiched between the two as they get on… and on, and on… And to think that this is coming from him, Choi Soobin, the ultimate yapper who can withstand any bantering.

Taehyun could only wince.

“No wonder she still sees you being that 2nd-year doofus,” Taehyun says with disbelief, shaking head.

“Those methods won't make her want to kiss you, man.” Soobin prompts, blunt as ever. But he was really getting sick of the two, the childish displays just translated to two people just eager to make out or something. Aish.

Even on how graphic Beomgyu can be at times with telling Soobin about his mushy feelings, (Man, why do I have to be the one to take it?!), just EWW! YUCK! Man, stop being sappy and just get on it, will ya?!

As if frozen in place while they collectively stare at each other as the usual boisterous Choi Beomgyu is now quiet in their presence. He’s down bad.

Man….

The shock factor just added to how ridiculous this is.

Yeonjun belts out an insult in disgust. “Pabo, Beomgyu!”

The Gryffindor could only take the blow of his friend’s smack on his shoulder. Beomgyu knows to himself that what he's doing is the bare minimum at its finest.

So how does he get Yumi to see him differently?

He could've done this way before Jaemin had his shots, dammit. It's bad enough he's comparing himself to the point of ruminating. He dug himself into this hole.

Beomgyu got out of his trance as he felt the soft hands of Yumi on his. He almost melts at her gaze. "Got your Potions homework figured out already, Beomi?"

The open book was a great cover up at him mindlessly staring down in regret.

"Why, you need help with yours?" he asks.

The others roll their eyes. Things would not progress if they kept it like this, how it usually does. How can they change her perspective of him as best friends if they keep it this way?

Taehyun suggests getting them alone together, with a glance, Kai and the others quickly catch on. Even Yeonjun surprisingly nudging him in the right direction, even if it meant nudging them literally closer to one another.

A tinge of pink on Beomgyu's ears as both their shoulders bumped, Yumi just met eyes with him in surprise.

Aish, is he some kid with a crush to act this way or something?

Yeah...

Dang it.

“We can take this to someplace more quieter, these guys are obnoxious as fuck.” Beomgyu casually rolls his eyes at them.

“Y-yah!” Soobin with a mouthful, attempts to retort. But before he has the opportunity, Beomgyu scurries away by getting Yumi's hand and drags her somewhere.

“Honestly I don't know, I already got my dress in mind, hopefully it matches the tie with my partner, whoever... argh— sorry, this is corny to even plan out advance up to that point.” Yumi covers her face, frantically lining up the papers laid out. Maybe because of how the conversation died down on the homework, her attention got riled up on the shift of atmosphere as they wrapped it up.

“So easy to say, you're excited?” Beomgyu smirks, teasingly bumping his shoulder with hers.

Yumi is blushing, maybe because this is like another Yule Ball, version 2.0 that the students had come up with? It’s fairly a big event other than Quidditch finals, maybe as to why it got her so wrapped up about it? No use rationalizing it.

“Heck, I don't even know who I'm going with...”

So that was the big issue for her huh?

“Hopefully I can ease that up?” he perks. Ahhh... a flurry of wariness bubbled in Beogmyu's stomach.

Silence... it rang almost hovering over them for too long. It didn’t help with them almost centimeters away from touching each other’s fingers... Beomgyu takes a deep breath, opposite to Yumi who barely had the thought of breathing whatsoever.

Beomgyu breaks the silence.

“Did anyone ask you out already? How about that Slytherin?”

Man, why did I have to go there...

“Jaemin, yeah... he did ask me.” Yumi sheepishly plays with her fingers, her lap is threatened to be damp any second now of how her nervous sweats are seeping into her hands. Breathe…

Beomgyu observes her. “You're going with him?”

“Not quite sure...”

“Hmmm?” He hums letting it stay on his lips for a moment longer. “Why so?”

Yumi shrugs.

Almost passive, she diverts the topic. “How about you? Someone asked you to go with them as your date, Beomi?”

“Nah... turned them down.” He’s quick to dismiss it, as nothing interests him but the one beside him. Does she know?

“So, you are still Mr. Popular huh?”

Seeing her attempts to lighten the atmosphere, Beomgyu laughs softly. But the dreading feet stomping his chest is still not quite simmering down.

“Actually…”

He starts venting, different from their usual banter, although this is not a rare instance between the two.

Of course, he kept the vital details in check.

Mostly it's how worried Beogmyu is all this time, especially the Year End Party date. Like doing every means to not let anyone else take Yumi. Most especially keeping an eye on Jaemin.

But it all went down the drain.

Because he wants everything but for them to go together, especially as they promised and Beomgyu already planned this years ahead.

Like what else is he here for? Obviously, he has intentions… And he's not quite sure if Yumi is well aware of this, and how she's just letting him in in her life further.

“Huh? What do you take me for, Beomi? And didn't we promise to go together at any special events ever since?”

Like it’s obvious they’re a package, it wouldn’t be Lee Yumi if not with Choi Beomgyu. The Badger and the Lion.

Beomgyu blinks in disbelief.

“Y-yeah, yeah. Right.”

She had no choice but to blurt out some of the heaviness she had been feeling in her chest. Her hunches. Yumi had her brows knitted together at him.

“Pabo-yah. You're acting really weird lately… like ever since Jaemin showed up.” She had to chuckle at what she was saying right now. “Are you jealous or something?”

That pushed a trigger somehow, it came off as a joke, but Yumi was taken aback at his seriousness.

When silence rang between them, she broke the moment.

“Beomgyu…? I'm not gonna leave you that easily.” She leans close to him, putting a hand on his shoulder. “We're best friends, right?”

A sigh almost tears the same rift between them with the silence he was giving her.

“Sometimes, I wish we weren't…”

Yumi stared at him blankly, her heart sank as she wallowed over his words… “What do you mean?”

“I know I have always been blatant about this, how much I like you. For years… since.”

His eyes are as direct as his words to her. But she remained jaded.

“Yeah, I like you too, we're best of fri—"

“No, don't say it.” He cuts her off, holding himself back further. Beomgyu just sighs, his shoulders slumping as prominent on the shift of his mood since those lines are drawn. “I know… But I guess you don't know enough.”

“Beomgyu…”

Loss for words, still not quite comprehending any of this.

Beomgyu leans in, and Yumi shudders as he closes the proximity between them.

She shut her eyes at the blow… expecting entirely different that might break her, or something that might set her off differently. His words… or his lips— She's quite bewildered at herself as well really.

She only felt this with Jaemin, so how is it now… No, I’m with Beomgyu right now, don’t think of him…

Feeling nothing of sorts at her prediction… Yumi opened her eyes as he felt Beomgyu by her ear.

“I just… don't wanna lose you.” That's all that he's able to muster out but it encapsulates the feelings in his chest. “You're special to me, you know that right, Yumi?”

Beomgyu is quite obvious already with Yumi, but she's not taking it seriously.

“You gave a fright there, I like you very much as to why I keep you close. And dumbass, I told you I won't be going anywhere.” She pulled him close to an embrace, most likely to conceal the traces of worry on her face. But the loud thumping on her chest cannot hide her heart's pleas.

This does not address the fact that she’s setting aside some of her fears, as deep down, the least that she wants is to lose her best friend in the whole wide world.

Beomgyu is who she's most comfortable with.

But things have been taking a shift lately, and it's scaring her quite frankly.

“I don't know… it's just, it's always had been us. It's weird, odd… that if I suddenly went with someone else...” Yumi is fumbling over her words and Beomgyu can't help but let her be. To think that was her worry all this time. It really made him torn.

Between growing up and letting her be…

“That's your choice though, I can't stop you,” Beomgyu says, he looks at her with his distant eyes. “Do you want to go out with him instead?”

“Can I really?”

That slight glimmer in her eyes… He had to tear himself away from that black hole effect of hers. Also to hide his dampening eyes.

“Psh… Who am I your parent? I have no means to control you, Yumi.”

Yumi beamed widely, and Beomgyu swore it ultimately tore a canyon in between them despite hugging closely like this, but… if it meant to see her smile brightly like that.

Even if it weren't because of me…

xavier wasn't only a team leader during his life, but he also became a tutor. for those who didn't feel as though they fitted in immediately, he helped who he could recognise their potential, and figure out what they could do not only as an empowered person but also as a weapon or meister.

xavier's teammates were everything to him. it was a family before it was a friendship. huxley would recount that, whenever they did something outside of practice or games, xavier would always be the one to encourage and empower people's needs and desires in a way that felt as though he'd been made for a leadership role.

when the games came around there was an expectation of him. he'd do something incredible, that was certain- but even if he didn't, he knew that the people behind him would warmly push him forward and accept his worth even if it weren't to be shown to the public.

after his death, huxley visited the memorial that'd been put up by the team often. he'd bring his friends, his family, and his people with him to look at the several pictures and flowers and whatever else were left in his memory.

even though xavier was the spitting image of a person who was headstrong and in a position of trust, it was fact that he’d never wielded a weapon during his lifetime. it was something that a lot of people had expected him to have experience in, and yet he held none. huxley wonders if it was because of that expectation that he didn't want to, or purely because he held no interest in it.

no matter the answer, nobody cared for semantics. all that remained was a sense of loss and love for someone who gave them nothing more than support and care.

While awareness and diagnostic practices were improving, many teenagers may have still faced significant social, emotional, and educational hurdles.

Born in 🇲🇰, but has to move out of Skopje to Washington D.C in 🇺🇸 to go to an American college for Hotel and Tourism Technician.

Acts like a teenager in the early or mid-2000s.

Has special interests like Smallville, Teen Titans, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Has to live in Washington D.C in 🇺🇸, due to his birth country 🇲🇰 suffering from economic hardships, the 2001 insurgency in 🇲🇰 and much more.

Started speaking English due to the language delay of his mother's tongue.

Has to work as a Burger King cashier to get enough money for food and clothes.

Dresses in his traditional 🇲🇰 outfit once to convey where he is coming from.

His college buddies had an understanding of his autism, but they don't know he is 🇲🇰.

Has to resort to studies and quiet places due to sensory overload.

Accent barrier due to coming from 🇲🇰 and being taught English caused him to have a 🇲🇰 accent, which can end up slipping a lot.

When his father is at work, his grandfather takes care of him when he was a child and teenager and still does when he is 18 via a dial-up or phone call. His grandfather is a former Balkan soldier in 🇷🇸, but still speaks 🇲🇰.

Probably played video games with his friends on PlayStation 2 in a dorm room and was more influenced by American culture. But he has stored his 🇲🇰 snacks and drinks, and he had bought a 2000s laptop (VAIO PCG-SRX99), used by his scholarship money and payment (loans) from his job for his studies and doing internet-y things.

Goes on midnight hangouts due to hypersensitivity to bright lights or certain light wavelengths; thus, his going out at night or the place being dimly lit is something that is common for him.

Certain sounds, smells, textures and tastes can also be overwhelming for him due to having autism. This can result in sensory avoidance, trying to get away from stimuli that he can easily tune out.

His friends are quite supportive, like his 🇫🇷-🇿🇦 friend, named Enzo, who was once a top student at his own school. And his other friend, a 🇰🇷 Min-Seok. Wonder how our 🇰🇷 broski like Min-Seok came to college, simple he graduated high school and transferred to go to an American college.

While the school in 🇺🇸 had an exchange student program, and a special program for Jovan. His friends are of various ethnicities and races, while they aren't disabled. They still care deeply for him, treating him like a person rather than his condition.

Jovan's school life from mainstream kindergarten to high school isn't too out of the ordinary due to his intellect and having a special tutor to help him through elementary and high school. And even the American college has a disability centre or special needs program.

He met people before who had visible or non-visible disabilities, one had cerebral palsy and another with hearing aids or vision aids, some with Down syndrome and another with a wheelchair and a prosthetic limb. He is probably already known with disabilities that are similar to his or different from his, so having someone with a learning disability and another one with ADHD, speech and much more isn't new to him.

What is new? Was befriended a male with severe blindness named Kevin Lyons. A 🇮🇪 guy who was suffering from severe blindness, so he had to wear sunglasses and carry a white cane around or bring a braille around. He taps with it and has been in a 🇮🇪 special needs school and was taken to a mainstream high school. Kevin was someone, despite with blindness, who was actually a chill guy who liked sci-fi and space.

While Jovan's myopia, which is nearsightedness, was a common vision condition in which close objects look clear but faraway objects look blurry. (What causes nearsightedness? Nearsightedness happens when your eyeball grows too long from front to back, or when there are problems with the shape of your cornea (clear front layer of the eye) or lens (an inner part of the eye that helps the eye focus) Because of this, Jovan has to wear glasses for the majority of his life. Which made him look like a geek or nerd of the school, the nerd aspect being a bookworm and studious and a geek being knowledgeable about and obsessively interested in a particular subject, especially one that is technical or of specialist or niche interest. And some classmates made fun of him and bullied him for being a "nerd/geek", his father had to report them to the authorities which the principal just so that no further harm would happen.

Jovan's special interests are TV shows, tourism and much more, and he is into 2000s niche content and shows/movies or ones that are animated.

Any HR with gothic vibes you would recommend?

Yes!

Anne Stuart is known for writing darker, more gothic-y historicals. I've only read A Rose at Midnight so far, but I know her Rohan series is recommended for this a lot. I loved A Rose at Midnight. It's set shortly after the French Revolution (set in England, largely) and the heroine literally begins the book wanting to kill the hero. She does poison him! He just survives lmao. But yeah, the beef is real, it's pretty dark (TW for noncon, dubcon, forced sex work, general Reign of Terror violence) and there's a general sense of violence and mystery and secrets.

Elizabeth Hoyt plays with the Gothic a lot. I'd recommend:

The Raven Prince. Really a sexy Jane Eyre, the heroine is the hero's secretary and ends up putting on a mask and pretending to be a sex worker at a brothel he frequents in order to sleep with him. (To be very fair to her, he was only visiting the brothel because he was avoiding their intense sexual tension.) But yeah, he sweeping around his manor, he's doing the high drama. it's GREAT.

The Leopard Prince. This is more "we're out on the moors, the natural world is here, the are murders and mysterious sheep kilings" Gothic. The heroine inherits an estate and moves there, only to begin an affair with her gruff steward, who's basically on the brink of being framed for murder. It's HOOOOOT.

All of the Dolphin Sex Cult books in Maiden Lane kinda have this vibe, but TW because the cult is heavily involved in pedophilia. The heroes and heroines are trying to stop it. These books consist of:

Duke of Sin. Insane villainous hero, hides in his walls watching the heroine (who's his housekeeper and has been planted in his house in order to steal blackmail material he owns from him) for like... 3-4 months. She doesn't even know he's there. He's truly wild. But he is trying to... avenge his sister... because their father was in the Dolphin Sex Cult? It's complex.

Duke of Pleasure. In this one, the hero is a king's bastard, actively trying to take down the Dolphin Sex Cult. The heroine is a street urchin who's often dressed as a boy in order to stay safe; she's also a vigilante. He recruits her to help him, while also teaching her to pass as a lady. This one involves the infamous "ummmm people are about to catch us, quick suck my dick for cover" and she just doesn't stop when the people go away and swallows.

Duke of Desire. This one is really intense and dark. The hero kidnaps the heroine to prevent her from falling prey to the villains, and forces her to marry him for the same reasons. She's like "I can deal with this, but I want a baby" which he refuses because he has a lot of sexual trauma related to the cult (TW for childhood SA).

The Ghost of St. Giles arc in Maiden Lane is also on that wavelength--it's all about this masked vigilante who skulks the night. Turns out the identity is shared by several different guys!

Thief of Shadows. The Winter Makepeace book. Our hero is a schoolmaster/orphanage master guy, and he runs around as the Ghost, while by day a rich society widow tutors him on how to solicit donations from patrons and do polite society right. Said widow catches on to his game, and they begin this intense passionate secret affair while he's also dealing with Ghost stuff.

Lord of Darkness. The next Ghost is a quiet widower who married again a few years ago in order to save a young woman he barely knew from ruin when she got pregnant out of wedlock and her lover died before they could make it legal. She miscarried right after the wedding, and wants a baby now, so she's back in town wanting to finally consummate the marriage. He agrees, but he's withholding the Secret while they try for a baby.

Duke of Midnight. Georgian Batman with heavy Gothic tones. Our hero is a tortured duke whose parents were killed in front of him, and ever since he's desired REVENGE. The heroine is a lady's companion with a dark past who's trying to regain her former station and free her imprisoned brother, and she catches on to his vigilante activities and is like "mmm you're gonna help me or I'm gonna tell everyone thaaanks".

If you want something on the kinkier side, Sierra Simone's Ivy Leavold trilogy (which must be read in order) is a kinky Jane Eyre, basically, with very Gothic overtones. Sierra looooves the Gothic. It's super hot and really fun.

Scarlett Peckham's The Duke I Tempted has a Gothic "I married a mysterious man and he has secrets I must discover" vibe. Of course, his secret is that he's submissive in bed, but there are other things too! The Earl I Ruined has similar vibes, but less so.

since we're asking about relationships: shiho and an? and what's one thing you'd like to see an and toya do together? not necessarily in the terms of an event story [unless you want to] could be anything!

LOVE Shiho and An. Absolutely adore Shiho and An. Resonant Town was the event where I completely and totally decided "oh okay, I definitely have a favourite in this game" (before that I was kind of torn between An and Touya, actually), so it's very dear to me.

I love how easy for An it was to befriend Shiho. She hasn't met this girl properly like a week ago and she's already dragging her on an aquarium date /p. "If she your friend?" "Yeah!!" You go girl! Love you for that.

I love how much Shiho cared about An, too. Yes, all of their meetings were by a coincidence (which is extremely funny), but even so, Shiho was still concerned and worried for An because of all the pain she heard in her voice, and in their last meeting even went out of her way to help An out.

I love how Shiho saw Leo/need and also herself in An. I love how that's the reason she was able to understand and connect with An so well, pinpointing her feelings before An even said anything. I love how An opened up to her, slowly and hesitantly but earnestly, because she saw herself in Shiho, too.

I love just about everything about this particular moment and have re-watched it more than i can count.

I love their way with music, too. Them being at the same wavelength entirely for the jam session and experimenting and pushing each other further! The slight hint of admiration they have for each other's skill! Everything!!

Just look at them! They're an amazing duo! I can't get enough of them!

Anyway. Back to normal.

An and Touya is... An interesting question. I really want them to talk about running away from their grief, feeling of inadequacy, jealousy too, all of that ugly stuff. I really hope that will be what this event will bring us, even though I don't have much hope.

But I also want them to do silly stuff together, too. Arcade tournaments. An teaching Touya to cook properly. Math tutoring. Composing songs! An who doesn't know music theory at all because Nagi taught her in a way that was super intuitive and relies on An's natural talent vs Touya and his multitude of classical composition textbooks and the need to learn in more technical ways is such a nice contrast and peak comedy potential.

I Told Sunset About You Live Blogging

I learned about this back in 2020, around the time 2gether was coming out or afterwards I guess? I had the trailer on my Watch Later because I heard about some gay series with the beautiful title and some appealing tagline. I hadn't even been into BLs or shows much back then and was still curious about it. Yet, it's nearing the end of 2024 and still haven't watched it.

I watched Billikin's How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies in theatres a few months ago. I've gotta make some time to watch this, man. I don't know whether I'll be tempted to binge or watch 1-2 eps a day, maybe I'll try to savour it.

Overall:

One of the shows that has been on my watchlist the longest, since before I was even into shows or BLs. It was beautiful to watch and you could feel the effort and thought in the storyline and characterization and plot progression and the writing. Really well done, I thought they used their runtime very well. Emotional but I don't think that I'll actually think about this show or characters much. I didn't latch onto the characters or relationship as much as I hoped or other people seemed to but it's still well-crafted regardless.

That said the Lance and Keith heart to heart reminded me to be pissed at how they've fucked up both Allura and Lance as characters to get them to this point. Bro. I'm still so.

Ik this is a minor thing but because I'm losing it: frankly the fighting in this show is usually SOLID, in this episode it was very flat. They usually do a good job at using environmental details (See the Weblum episode for some of that good good environmental fighting, or even more recently Shiro's escape!) but in this one the fighting was just kind of like they weren't interacting with the environment and the loss of those details was a bit disappointing for me.

HEYO so if we're doing political machinations in this show, they need to MATTER. If Lotor is doing some political ploy, you NEED to have interaction with the empires. You need to have meat on the bones! What's tangibly different from him and Zarkon? What're the implications of him taking control? The Galra Empire in this show is presented as a pretty generic purple evil, if they're going to flesh it out we're going to need MORE.

No show about weird space robot lions will ever manage to cook hard enough to explore why they present Zarkon's "Well there's a serving class and you shouldn't fraternize with them" as evil but still accept hereditary monarchy and the idea of kingdoms and the existence of an ultra megaweapon with minimal accountability as totally chill and morally fine. Hmm. BUT I WILL THINK IT VERY HARD IN THEIR DIRECTION HMMM

Guys I fear that I will never be a fan of Primordial Evil Blob as a principle antagonist for this show and I grow concerned that that's where we're headed.

I kind of want to like the Adam and Eve nature of Zarkon and Haggar's relationship now. Where she fell first and Zarkon fell with her. But I don't love it from like a... "it was the woman's fault" perspective that they fell prey to this primordial evil soup. Which. Is lame.

Bro this story could be so cool if a competent writer was doing it all but unfortunately, not the case. There's SO MUCH in the backstory episode that makes me go "Oh my god dude this NEEDS more exploration in depth to work" and yet. Here we are. I also think that the weird lil Pure Evil Blobs are. Well. Lazy!

Guys I'm so serious when Legend of Korra brought out the magical kites of destiny for season 2 I rolled my eyes so hard and if Voltron pulls this schtick with the weird transdimensional blob creature I am worried they will roll right out of my skull. When is it my turn to be happy.

Also, if I as a writer was interested in pushing this story, I would 100% be interested in getting to a point where we question what that "age of exploration and peace" really means. Again, all these people are nobles, Voltron is explicitly a weapon, is this show really committed to having a WEAPON being the symbol of peace? Is that where we want to be heading? Zarkon was wrong because he was a Bad Guy but like let's get to the core of it!!!!

By the way! I know maybe not all of you are familiar with the Ancient Texts, but PLEASEEEEE watch A Ghost Of A Chance which is fucking. HILARIOUS. And they were yapping about quarks too. Fucking glorious. Merla I miss you my goat. It's so funny. I feel like though obviously the 80s American incarnation of Voltron was. Perhaps. Not 100% sophisticated, but still DELIGHTFUL. The Memories I Am Most Fond Of

Every high school memory ever, even the badshit. My high school life wasn't as bad as everyone else's sooooo. It was the most fun I had all around.

Drunk nights with friends. DRUNK KARAOKE NIGHTS EVEN BETTER.

Every beach episode.

New Year's Eve. Even though it gets super noisy, I like the vibe of everyone - how positive and hopeful they are embracing the new year.

Watching movies or series episodes with other people, regardless if we were family, friends or neither. It's always nice to see other people's reactions to the same media you're consuming. One of the easiest ways to learn more about the people you're watching with. I still remember that one time I watched a Haikyuu episode, the one where Tsukishima BLOCKS in season 3. I watched it in an internet cafe. I SKIPPED my evening classes for it. I had to watch it as soon as it dropped. And I remember dozens of other people rushing inside the cafe and watching behind every weeb's computer screen. There were like 6 or 7 of us playing the Haikyuu episode. There were college students watching behind each one of us. And the moment Tsukishima perfectly blocked Ushijima, we all yelled and cheered like it was a real world sports event. That was fucking amazing. I am so glad I skipped classes that evening. I felt so connected with these strangers, it felt great! And I also thought only girls watched Haikyuu, but that night it was mostly guys. I respect the hell out of that.

Shopping and hanging out with my mom. When I was a kid, she would bring me every where when we stopped getting nannies to take care of me. To her work (yes, somehow they let me stay put in their lounge afternoon onwards because I was such a behaved kid, I only posed as distraction every time they walked to the lounge. What made it fun even until now is that this was always a great time to ask her about weird questions, and we have the same wavelength of laughing at ridiculous things we see when travelling. Well, I mean, it's true for the rest of our fam, still it feels more satisfying to get my mother to laugh cause most of time she's just a walking grenade.
