Mako Mermaids F/Feb Day 8 Grey
Day 8 Grey - Rita/Veridia/Nerissa, 803  words, Rating G
Stormy days were grey days. When the pouring rains and howling winds kept them all shut inside and made surfacing to breathe a dangerous task. Most Mermaids took to their caves and waited it out, safe with their friends and their own little treasures.
Rita had been one of those Mermaids once, until she came onto land and built her grotto from a dusty old cavern under the house to a literal treasure trove. Treasures, potions, rare fabrics, antiques and anything one could think of to do with the sea.
Sometimes she watched the storms from the safety of the house, watching as the grey clouds engulfed the sky and the Sea mirrored it back, an endless gloom set to swallow the whole world if it was left to its own devices.
Sometimes she used storms as an excuse to look through her collection. Each storm brought out another old chest she hadn’t looked at in years or sparked up the urge to rearrange and change her displays. She once thought about cataloguing everything but she gave up after she filled the first leather bound tome and had barely scratched the surface on her possessions.
This newest storm was another opportunity. She’d watched the clouds while she waited for the kettle to boil then retreated down to the grotto where she found Veridia and Nerissa already settled in the lower level. Nerissa lying with her head on Veridia’s lap, the latter sitting closest to the stairs, holding a book in her hands.
Rita kissed Veridia on the cheek before sipping her tea and deciding which area to start on first.
“Now I feel left out. Everyone’s all paired up but me,” Nerissa joked as she sat up. “Mimmi’s over with Chris, Zac and Evie are at Evie’s house and now you two over here.”
“Aww,” Rita gave Nerissa a gentle kiss on the cheek and lightly cupped her jaw, “Least it gives you time to help with some organising down here while everyone else is busy. Both of you can help.”
“I’m not helping, not after last time. You got annoyed at me for not putting everything back right, I’m going to stay here and read,” Veridia swung her legs up onto the bench in one smooth move, the fabric of her dress rippling like the waves as she did so, “Nerissa do not indulge her either.”
“Nerissa can make up her own mind,” Rita retorted,”and besides, she’s using false facts to get pity.” Rita directed her attention towards the Mermaid in question, “You know you’re one of us Nerissa.”
“If you value your peace and sanity stay here with me,” Veridia warned.
“How bad can it be?”
Veridia turned back to her book with a laugh as Nerissa gingerly stood up and followed behind Rita.
As soon as Rita moved the first target box, it unearthed a cloud of dust almost as big as the storm clouds outside which immediately doused both her and Nerissa near enough head to toe.
“Veridia was right,” Nerissa coughed, “I never should have helped you.”
Rita just shook the grey dust from her hair. “It’s been a while since this has been moved, a bit of dust is perfectly normal.”
“This is not a bit of dust, this is a literal volcanic ash size pile of dust. It’s all over you and all over me.”
“I warned you two,” Veridia called over, “but Rita never listens and it seems you don’t either Nerissa. Now who’s left out, the only voice of reason left.”
“Hearing her, the voice of reason,” Rita continued brushing dust off before raising her voice to make sure Veridia could also hear, “try getting Ondina to do what you say and then we’ll see who’s the ‘voice of reason’ amongst us.”
“Ondina is perfectly willing to follow instructions,” Veridia said, “the majority of the time.”
“When was the last time she did what you asked? She’s too much like you. Never does as she’s told
“Ondina always does what I ask,” Nerissa added.
“You’ve got the best friend’s mum thing going on,” Rita replied, “plus Ondina was only here for a week before she left for Shanghai.”
“How about instead of arguing, you two get all that dust cleaned off of you?” Veridia asked. “It’s in both of your hair and all over your clothes and I don’t want it on me.”
“Why not? You’d look cute being all dusty with us,” Rita blew a kiss to Veridia.”
“I’m fine thank you, just clean yourselves up.”
Rita waited until Veridia had gone back to her book before cloaking herself and quietly sneaking up behind the other Mermaid and catching her in a hug. The surprise gave Nerissa enough time to catch Veridia from the front.
“You two are horrible!”

20 questions, next wave.
which muse would try to befriend the others?
Fi and Lola would try to befriend everyone (except demons for Lola). Reina is usually friendly, she'd get along a lot with Keith for close interests, and would get close to Tora. Aby and Duncan would be very good friends if they managed to reach that point. Axel and Zephyr would gravitate towards eachother out of sorta kinship (oni/kitsune). Gabriel would enjoy making Duncan or Jason's life hell. Vincent is friendly, but would get along with Erik the best. Niel would approach Lukan in hope he'd teach him how to understand humans better. Lukan and William would bond over nosy/werewolf family.
which muse would be the MOM friend? DAD friend?
Reina and Tora are a bit of mom friend, but I think Duncan is th emost "mom friend" vibed, ironically, with Lukan. Who could also be dad friend i guess. Keith is the most dad friend though. William just right behind.
what song do you associate with each muse?
Putting this under readmore, it's gonna be long x)
Leo : You've Created a monster, Bohnes Duncan : I'm a Wantd Man, Royal Deluxe Fi : Backup Plan, Carry the Day Axel : Glow, Britt Nicole Niel : Home, Prismo Seth : Party Animal, Con Bro Chill Gabriel : Nobody's Gonna Save my Soul, Sin Shake Sin Erik : R U Game, Hael Blaize : If I Killed Someone For You, Alec Benjamin Reina : Kingdom Come, Jon Bellion Zephyr : Immortals, Fall Out Boy Lukan : Help You Fly, Ivan Keith : Ghosts, Jacob Tillberg Vincent : Don't be mad, Parker The Bandit Tora : Part of Me, Katy Perry Lola : Travel the world, Superbus Aby : Beautiful things, Benson Boone Jason : Redemption, Besomorph William : We Are the Brave, VERIDIA Cal : Me and my demons, Omido Yun : Demon Mode, Stileto/AViVA

In a future where interstellar travel and inter-species treaties are commonplace, the galactic community is governed by a revised set of ancient Earth agreements, including the legendary Treaty of Turkmenchay, now repurposed to maintain peace among the myriad species of the universe.
The story begins with Lira, a young artist from the planet Veridia, known for its inhabitants' vibrant appearance and emotional depth. Veridians have the unique ability to manifest their emotions through the colors and patterns in their hair, a trait that made Lira famous across the galaxy. Her art isn't merely visual; it’s an emotional experience, using the bio-luminescent ink derived from the sacred Flora of Azimuth, which reacts to the viewer's deepest emotions.
Lira's latest masterpiece, "The Spectrum of Souls," is set to be unveiled at the Galactic Council on the neutral planet Eridani. The painting is not just art—it's a political statement. Through her work, Lira intends to protest the expansionist policies of the Gorgoth Empire, which have begun to infringe upon the sovereignty of neighboring systems, violating the New Treaty of Turkmenchay—a galactic adaptation ensuring the autonomy and cultural preservation of planetary systems.
As Lira travels to Eridani, her ship is intercepted by a Gorgoth warship. The Gorgoth, a species known for their lack of visual and emotional perception, dismiss the importance of the treaty and Lira's artistic endeavors. They see her and her art as a tool in their diplomatic arsenal, intending to use her presence at the council as a sign of Veridian submission.
Unbeknownst to the Gorgoth, Lira's art holds a deeper power. At the council, as her piece is revealed, the vibrant swirls of color and emotional depth in her work do more than just display her feelings. The bio-luminescent ink reacts with the emotions of all present, binding them in a shared experience of the injustices faced by the smaller systems under Gorgoth rule. The emotional outpour turns into a psychic wave, amplifying through the council chambers, overwhelming the delegates with a profound understanding of the consequences of their political decisions.
Faced with the raw emotions conveyed through Lira's art, the Galactic Council reevaluates the terms of the New Treaty of Turkmenchay, reinforcing its clauses to better protect the sovereignty and cultural uniqueness of its signatories. The Gorgoth, moved by a rare emotional revelation, agree to withdraw their forces, marking a historic victory for diplomacy—facilitated not through traditional means, but through the transcendent power of art and emotion.
Lira's work becomes a symbol of peace and emotional understanding, her name forever etched in the annals of galactic history, not only as an artist but as a pivotal figure in the evolution of interstellar diplomacy. Through "The Spectrum of Souls," she taught the galaxy that understanding and empathy, often overlooked in political discourse, could be the strongest forces in negotiating peace and harmony.

F/Feb 2021
Day 27 - Historic AU
Pairing - Mermaid!Rita/Pirate!Veridia
Words: 1303
Rating: T
This is the only day of Femslash Feb 2021 I never did at the time, but now almost 3 years later - it exists. It's technically Pirate!AU but since Pirates did exist a long time ago it's still Historic!AU
The wood of the ship groaned under the onslaught from the storm. Waves like mountains smashed into the hull and the wind grabbed everything it could and tossed it all into the sea including some of the crew.
Veridia watched as two of the men got thrown overboard and immediately swallowed by the waves.
Rain fells in sheets, drenching everyone on deck and coating the wood in a dangerous puddle.
“Everyone who is not essential up here, get below deck!” She shouted over the wind. She had to stay and steer but maybe, just maybe she could save as many of her crew as possible.
First mate Aquata was gripping the railing on the steps up as the ship pitched and rocked.
“The only way we all live through is to get to shelter!! Aquata yelled. “The storm’s too strong!”
“We just have to get past Mako! Once we’re out of the island’s reach we’ll be fine!”
Mako loomed off their port side. Illuminated by lightning flashes every so often. The island was a sign of death. She never should have come so close.
The next wave slammed so hard she heard wood crack.
“Captain, we're taking on water!” Maya staggered up from below. Amaris, Naia and Cameron at her heels.
“Get to the boats and pray to every God you’ve ever heard of they take mercy and let us pass!” Veridia ordered.
“Who’s they captain?” Aquata asked.
“Mermaids.”
Veridia had seen them out this way before. Mermaids. Half woman, half fish with long golden tails. Mako was a hotspot but somehow she thought she could get past them. The Mermaids had let her before.
They were almost clear of the island when the entire ship moved beneath them. Veridia was thrown to the side, crashing into the very wheel she still gripped beneath gloved hands before smacking into the floor.
“Wave!” Someone yelled.
The ship was slammed again. Veridia’s grip slipped and she found herself skidding across the soaked deck as the ship tipped. She barely had time to scream before the wood beneath her ran out and she plummeted down into the sea.
The water hit hard. It was like smashing into concrete, solid concrete that stung her skin and froze her right to her core. The salt stung her eyes and she couldn’t tell which way was up. It was darkness all around.
So this was how it ended. Burning lungs, freezing water, drowned to death in a magic storm. Even if she could somehow get to the surface the waves would immediately throw her under again. She didn’t even know if there was still a ship to get back too if she somehow survived the wave’s onslaught.
She couldn't hold her breath anymore, nor could she stop the involuntary inhale of sea water. It flooded her lungs. On instinct she coughed only for more water to swarm her. She was drowning. Actually drowning. Notorious pirate captain Veridia Shore and she was drowning. So much for going out guns blazing with her ship like she’d wanted. She was going to die and tides knew what would become of the Ice Bitch, affectionately named for herself after some rotten mouthed pirate had spat in her face and called her just that - “an ice cold bitch” for refusing his advances. The man had been swiftly punched in the face and a bottle smashed on his head.
The water took over, it was too hard to even try and fight now. She was sinking, the ocean taking her for it’s own.
The surge of water coming out her lungs in acrid vomit forced her awake. She was awake. Actually awake. She was soaked through and numb, lying on some sand. Her chest and throat burned like hellfire. If this was the afterlife it sucked.
“You lived,” a woman spoke from her side.
Veridia barely managed to look over, the storm had taken all her strength, she saw golden scales.
Ah so this was it. She’d survived a storm only to be killed by one of the Mermaids. There was many legends of Mermaids eating those they drowned, grinding their bones for potions and using the very Moon itself to cast dangerous spells.
“I thought you were gone, but there was this strong fire about you. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a bit of Mermaid in you.”
“I’m not one of you,” Veridia barely managed to spit out.
The Mermaid laughed.
“I saved your life, I would think you’d have the sense not to insult me. Save I decide to drag you back out into the shallows and hold you down until you drown.”
Veridia just sagged into the cold, gritty sand.
“I’ll give you a do over. Would you like me to get you dry?”
“Yes please.” The cold had reached her bones now. Being dry sounded nice.
Warmth began to envelope her, it was so calming. She could almost close her eyes and just sleep away the rest of her aches…
Something hit her in the leg, hard, jolting her awake.
“You can’t sleep yet. You fall asleep here and someone else will come along and drown you.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“I didn’t feel like it. I like watching the boats pass by, you land people are interesting.”
“You saved me because we’re interesting?”
“And what’s wrong with that?”
Veridia slowly sat herself up and wiped dried sand off her face to get her first look at the Mermaid. The Mermaid was sitting on the sand, a long golden tail curled underneath her with a large, strong looking fin at the end. She had dark red hair clinging to her neck and shoulder. Her tail blended seamlessly into a tanned stomach. Her breasts were covered in a smattering of the same gold scales as her tail.
“It’s rude to stare,” the Mermaid said and Veridia looked up and took in her face. She was pretty. Very pretty. No one had said Mermaids were pretty. For all the stories she almost expected fanged teeth, webbed ears and gills.
“Sorry,” Veridia forced out.
The Mermaid smiled and Veridia felt her stomach flutter.
“My name is Rita.”
“Veridia.”
“Veridia,” the Mer - Rita, repeated. Why did she like how much the Mermaid said her name?
“It’s very nice to meet you Veridia.”
“You too.”
Rita tilted her head slightly and Veridia felt her cheeks flush. The Mermaid’s eyes were scanning her the way Veridia had most likely been doing to her.
“Did any of my crew make it?”
“Most. Only those that fell overboard drowned. The storm stopped once you fell.”
“How?”
Rita shrugged, “I stopped it.”
“Why?”
“I’m not part of this pod anymore. Sometimes I interfere with their practices, stop storms, rescue ships, and rescue people.”
“Can you take me back to my ship?”
“I probably can if you really want.”
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“It looks like such a dirty life. Do you even get to wash?”
“Is being a Mermaid much cleaner?”
“Yes actually, we’re a very clean species. Unlike you land people - we can smell you from your boats. If you really want to go back I’ll take you.”
Veridia staggered up to her feet.
Rita uncurled her tail and and hauled herself to the incoming wave like a seal. The seemingly tiny wave was enough water for the Mermaid to stretch out and shoot out into the deeper water. Rita surfaced.
“You coming?”
Veridia waded into the water and dove forward far less gracefully than the Mermaid had. She treaded the water best she could while Rita swam around her.
“What now?”
Rita swam right up to her and cupped her face, “just breathe.”
Veridia’s heart literally skipped a beat. Then the Mermaid’s lips were on her’s. Then she was plunged back into the water again.
