Floodgates of Fact: Ditching the Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant Confusion
Tumblr media
Picture this: you've meticulously packed for your weekend hike, including that expensive camera and your essential navigation device. The forecast predicted sunshine, but halfway up the trail, the heavens open. You scramble to protect your bag, remembering it was labelled "water-protected." But as the downpour continues, a sinking feeling washes over you – much like the water now potentially seeping into your gear. This scenario is painfully common, largely because the terms "waterproof" and "water-resistant" are often used interchangeably or vaguely in marketing, leading to drenched disappointment. It's time to build a dam against this flood of misinformation, understand the real differences, and ensure your gear truly matches your needs.
Let's begin with the more common, and often less protective, term: water-resistant. Think of water-resistance as a basic shield, capable of handling light encounters with moisture. This property usually comes from the fabric's structure itself – tightly woven materials like nylon or polyester naturally shed some water. Frequently, these fabrics are also treated with a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish. This chemical coating encourages water to bead up and roll off the surface, preventing the fabric from immediately saturating. This level of protection is adequate for light mist, accidental spills, brief, light rain showers, or maybe damp conditions like morning dew. However, the key limitations are pressure and duration. Under sustained rainfall, windy conditions driving rain sideways, or any significant water pressure (like setting the bag down in a puddle), water will eventually penetrate. Furthermore, the seams on water-resistant items are typically just stitched, leaving minuscule holes, and the zippers are rarely designed to block water ingress. So, while that stylish commuter bag might suffice for a quick dash through drizzle, if you're venturing into territory known for unpredictable weather or engaging in activities near water, relying solely on water-resistance could leave your valuables vulnerable. For genuine peace of mind on longer treks or in wetter climates, investing in a dedicated Waterproof Backpack becomes less of a luxury and more of a necessity for safeguarding your gear.
Now, let's elevate the protection level to waterproof. When a product genuinely earns the waterproof label, it signifies a much higher degree of protection, designed to create an effective barrier against water entry under specific, often more demanding, conditions. This isn't just about the fabric weave; it involves specialized materials and construction techniques. Common waterproof materials include PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane), or fabrics like nylon or polyester coated with waterproof membranes (like Gore-Tex, though less common in bags than apparel) or heavy waterproof coatings. The critical differentiator lies in the construction, especially the seams and closures. True waterproof gear will feature seams that are either taped (a waterproof tape is applied over the stitched seam on the interior) or, for maximum integrity, welded (using heat or ultrasonic frequencies to fuse the material edges together, creating a seamless, impenetrable bond). Zippers are another crucial element; standard zippers are a major point of water entry. Waterproof items will either employ specialized waterproof zippers (often rubberized or featuring interlocking teeth designs like TIZIP or YKK AquaGuard) or, very commonly for bags and sacks, utilize a roll-top closure. When rolled down correctly (typically three or more folds) and buckled, this system creates a highly effective seal against water, even during brief submersions. A well-constructed Waterproof Waist Bag employing these principles is ideal for activities like fishing, kayaking, or even attending a rainy outdoor festival, ensuring your phone, keys, and wallet remain perfectly dry despite splashes or downpours.
To quantify these levels of protection more objectively, the industry often relies on the IP (Ingress Protection) rating system. This internationally recognized standard provides a clearer picture of how well an enclosure protects against intrusion from solids (first digit, often 'X' if untested) and liquids (second digit). For water protection, the second digit is key. For instance:
IPX4: Protects against splashing water from any direction (common for water-resistant gear).
IPX5: Prevents water jets from coming from any angle.
IPX6: Protects against powerful water jets.
IPX7: Protects against temporary immersion in water (up to 1 meter for 30 minutes).
IPX8: Protects against continuous immersion in water under conditions specified by the manufacturer (often deeper than 1 meter and/or for longer durations). When you are seriously considering activities like multi-day river trips, sailing, or any scenario where your gear might end up fully submerged, searching for the Best Dry Bags with high IP ratings like IPX7 or IPX8 is paramount. These ratings provide assurance that the bag is designed and tested to withstand complete submersion, keeping contents bone dry even if the bag goes overboard.
Mythbusters: Clearing the Waters of Confusion
Let's directly address some common myths surrounding these terms:
Myth: "Water-resistant offers decent protection, it's just slightly less effective than waterproof." Busted: This minimizes a crucial difference. Water-resistant handles light and brief moisture exposure. Waterproof provides a robust barrier against sustained rain, significant splashes, and often submersion. The performance gap is substantial, and mistaking one for the other can lead to significant water damage.
Myth: "If the tag says 'waterproof,' it means I can dunk it underwater indefinitely." Busted: "Waterproof" is not a monolithic standard without context. A rain jacket might be waterproof against falling rain due to fabric and taped seams but will leak heavily through zippers and openings if submerged. Always look for specific capabilities – does it mention submersion? Does it have an IPX7 or IPX8 rating? A roll-top dry bag designed for submersion is fundamentally different from a jacket designed only to shed rain.
Myth: "The fabric is waterproof, therefore the entire bag must be waterproof." Busted: Waterproof fabric is only one component. If the seams are merely stitched (leaving needle holes) and the closures (zippers, drawstrings) aren't specifically designed to block water, the bag will leak. Construction quality, particularly seam sealing and closure type, is just as important, if not more so, than the base material itself.
Myth: "My bag has a DWR coating, so it's effectively waterproof." Busted: A DWR finish is excellent for enhancing water resistance. It makes water bead and roll off initially. However, DWR coatings wear off with use, abrasion, dirt, and washing, requiring reapplication. Critically, DWR alone does not create a waterproof barrier capable of withstanding pressure or prolonged exposure. It's a surface treatment, not inherent structural protection.
Why Understanding the Difference is Crucial
Getting this right goes beyond just preventing a bit of dampness:
Protecting Investments: Electronics like phones, cameras, GPS units, laptops, and even power banks are highly susceptible to water damage, which is often irreparable and expensive.
Ensuring Safety & Comfort: Wet clothing or sleeping bags in the backcountry can lead to discomfort at best, and dangerous hypothermia at worst. Keeping essential safety gear dry (first aid kit, fire starter) is critical.
Saving Money Long-Term: Investing in genuinely waterproof gear appropriate for your activities prevents the costly replacement of water-damaged items down the line.
Matching Gear to Activity: A city commuter has different needs than a whitewater rafter. Choosing the right level of protection ensures your gear performs reliably when you need it most.
Navigating Your Purchase: Tips for Smart Selection
Scrutinize Descriptions: Look beyond marketing buzzwords. Check for details on materials (PVC, TPU, coated fabrics), seam construction (taped, welded), closure type (roll-top, waterproof zipper model), and any IP ratings provided.
Prioritize IP Ratings for Submersion: If keeping gear dry during potential immersion is non-negotiable, focus on products explicitly stating an IPX7 or IPX8 rating.
Assess Your True Needs: Be realistic about the wettest conditions you're likely to encounter. Occasional light rain demands less than multi-day expeditions in monsoon season or watersports.
Examine in Person (If Possible): Feel the material. Look closely at the seams – can you see tape on the inside? Is the zipper robust and sealed? Does the roll-top feel substantial and seal tightly?

Boots/shoes- I always travel with two pairs and flips flops. So you’ll see how things are partnered up; in the summer it’ll be the Defcons and the Breeze, winter time it’s the Torre and the TGoods. This allows for the bad weather, mud, etc that is always present and me to have a pair ready for work and play no matter the weather.
1. Vasque Breeze Low- no longer made, so I just scored another pair but the Talus may be a solid replacement. The Breeze is waterproof, bomber 550 like laces, flat sole and can be used to run. Used year round on all ranges. Comfortable to freezing with proper socks.
2. Thorogood Moc Toe- waterproof, resoleable, tough as nails and USA made. I can’t remember this model but it has the waterproof membrane in it. Used mostly for long distance motorcycle rides/courses and any breaching courses. I wear them a lot because once broken in they are like slippers. If I can have only one boot- this is it. Comfortable from mids 20s to over 100 with proper socks.
3. DEFCON Vans- I know they are hard to get but these are my summer shoes because of how hot it gets in the south. I’ll do June ,July and August wearing these and also when traveling by plane. 60-100 degrees dry conditions and flat terrain.
4. Vasque Torre AT GTX- bottom line is this is the best waterproof hiker on the market today. Sorry to all you Salomon people but you’re not even in the same category. The Torre has complete goretex liner, 550 laces, wide toebox, flat sole, a rubber rand that encompasses the entire shoe and it weighs in under that magical 22 ozs. (That’s the weight of a boot when most people say “it’s really lightweight “!) . The Torre has no competition on the market right now IMO. Low 20’s to mid 80’s with proper socks.
5. Olukai . There is only one sandal/flip flop and that’s Olukai. Legitimately the one piece travel gear that anyone who travels a lot will fight over and I myself have called the most important piece of travel gear. Olukai flops will last longer and be more comfortable than any of the crap you see in a box store. This is the Ohana model with the bomber tread.

Application of bitumen in building
Bitumen has numerous applications in the construction industry, primarily serving as an adhesive and waterproofing material. Its versatile properties make it indispensable in various building-related functions. Here are some key applications of bitumen in construction:
1. Roofing and Waterproofing:
Bitumen 60/70 is extensively used in roofing systems to provide waterproof membranes for flat roofs. Traditional bitumen roofing membranes consist of layers of bitumen sprayed with aggregate, with a carrier fabric made of polyester or glass in between. Polymer-modified bitumen sheets have become the standard for flat roof waterproofing. Bituminous roofing membranes can also be recycled easily, enhancing their sustainability.
2. Wall Sealing:
Bitumen 60/70 plays a crucial role in sealing walls, providing protection against water and moisture intrusion. It is applied to substrates such as bathrooms and toilets, which are constantly exposed to moisture, to prevent water penetration and safeguard the underlying structures.
3. Floor and Wall Insulation:
Bitumen 80/100 insulation is widely employed for building waterproofing, both horizontally and vertically. It effectively prevents water penetration into floorboards and walls, offering reliable protection. Bitumen's chemical and physical properties make it easy to work with and highly durable.
4. Sound Insulation:
Bitumen's sound-absorbing properties find applications beyond construction. It helps reduce noise transmission, such as the sound of footsteps under floor coverings. Special tar mats in cars and elevators utilize Bitumen 80/100 for sound insulation.
5. Electrical Cable Insulation:
Bitumen's low electrical conductivity makes it suitable for use as an insulating material for electrical cables. It helps protect the cables and prevent electrical hazards.
6. Other Uses:
Bitumen 80/100 & bitumen 60/70 finds application in various other areas, such as the paper industry and the manufacturing of paints and varnishes. Its thermal insulation properties are beneficial in different contexts.
From an ecological standpoint, bitumen is highly regarded for its long lifespan. It remains a popular construction material, with significant demand both domestically and in international markets. The producer of bitumen in Iran exports a large percentage of its production to other countries such as Singapore, Dubai, Panama.
In residential construction, plastic-modified bitumen (KMB) coatings are commonly used for insulation. They compete with bitumen-free FPD (Flexible Polymer Disc) seals, which are easier to apply and offer faster repair options.
Overall, the applications of bitumen in the construction industry are extensive, ranging from roofing and waterproofing to sound insulation and electrical cable insulation. Its versatility and durability make it a valuable material in various building-related functions.
Important Considerations Before Using Bitumen:
1. Surface Preparation:
Before applying bitumen, it is crucial to ensure that the surface is clean, dry, and free from any contaminants. Even the presence of dust, dirt, or grease can hinder the adhesion of the bitumen coating and compromise the effectiveness of the seal. Additionally, the surface should be free from frost. If there are old incompatible coatings, they must be removed. In the case of older buildings, previous applications of bituminous paints may not provide a suitable surface for polymer-modified bitumen (PMB) coatings.
2. Repairing Cracks and Unevenness:
Prior to applying bitumen, any cracks or unevenness on the surface should be repaired using appropriate materials like repair mortar or leveling compounds. This ensures a smooth and uniform surface, promoting better adhesion and a more effective seal.
3. Additional Preparatory Measures:
In some cases, additional preparatory measures may be necessary. One option is to use a layer of synthetic resin on the coarse-pored bed or to apply a sealing slurry. A sealing slurry is a waterproof mixture of cement and plastic that allows water vapor to pass through. The advantage of using a sealing slurry is that it can adhere well to old bituminous coatings, providing an ideal substrate for applying a thick new bituminous coating.
By following these steps and ensuring proper surface preparation, you can optimize the adhesion and effectiveness of bitumen coatings in various applications.
What are the suitable means for repairing cracks and unevenness on the surface before applying bitumen?
There are several suitable means for repairing cracks and unevenness on the surface before applying bitumen. The choice of repair method depends on the severity of the damage and the specific requirements of the project. Here are some common methods for repairing cracks and unevenness:
1. Crack Fillers and Sealants:
For smaller cracks, crack fillers or sealants can be used. These materials, such as asphalt-based crack fillers or specialized concrete crack sealants, are designed to fill and seal cracks, preventing water infiltration and further damage. They are typically applied using a caulk gun or trowel.
2. Repair Mortar:
Repair mortars are suitable for filling larger cracks, holes, or areas of unevenness. These mortars are made from a blend of cement, sand, and additives to enhance adhesion and strength. They can be mixed with water to create a workable paste and then applied to the damaged areas using a trowel or other appropriate tools. Repair mortars are commonly used for repairing concrete surfaces.
3. Leveling Compounds:
Leveling compounds, also known as self-leveling underlayments or floor levelers, are used to create a smooth and level surface. These compounds are typically made from a blend of cement, fine aggregates, and additives. They have a fluid consistency that allows them to flow and self-level over uneven areas. Leveling compounds are commonly used to repair uneven concrete or subfloor surfaces before applying flooring materials.
4. Patching Mixtures:
Patching mixtures, such as asphalt patching compounds or repair mixes, are specifically designed for repairing asphalt surfaces. They typically contain a combination of asphalt binder, aggregates, and additives. These mixtures can be applied to fill potholes, repair damaged areas, or smooth out unevenness in asphalt surfaces.
5. Resurfacing:
In cases where the damage or unevenness is more extensive, resurfacing the entire surface may be necessary. This involves applying a new layer of bitumen or asphalt mixture over the existing surface to create a smooth and uniform finish. Resurfacing can help address multiple issues, including cracks, potholes, and unevenness.
It's important to follow the manufacturer's instructions and best practices when using any repair materials. Additionally, proper surface preparation, including cleaning and removing loose debris, is essential before applying any repair method.

Actual innovations in laptops that would make sense and be less shit than half of tech
1. Charging port. Magnetic, both sides. Not the bottom. I do not want a massive wireless charging laptop pad to topsy the elephant my ass on
2. Drastically improve battery life.
3. Improve keyboard switches in laptops and stop trying to make dual screens ala the Nintendo DS happen.
This is actually like a huge market right now, custom keyboards, and I have no idea why no one's really fighting to make low profile keyboard switches and then start selling custom keys, because if you like just a collaboration with Logitech would a lot of the appeal of some brands, and I hate to say it but if you're looking for ways to claim that your environmentally friendly, key caps are definitely a way to claim to use recycled plastic and churn out a lot of like product.
I've seen some people argue that it's just not possible to have like any form of mechanical keyboard switches on laptops which is really funny, because there's a whole community of people who do the alpha smart neo 2, and add mechanical switches on what was once I'm pretty sure a membrane keyboard.
Obviously it goes without saying that just about every single company would have a different like keyboard switch baseline height to make it so you can still close your laptop, but that's the grift baby. Y'all sell your own fucking keycaps and charge people to learn your dimensions. Capitalism.
4. Responsive technology that when laptop feet are no longer compressed or something along those lines actually briefly shows current battery charge on the outside of the laptop so that when I grab my computer to go somewhere I know if I need my charger.
Actually just having a laptop with a badge panel on the outer shell would be really cool because then there's a lot of like practical uses for it, like if you're a shitty person it could just be your name badge in a meeting, but if you're like a DJ or something like that it could just display information about what you're playing on Spotify and audible. It could also be used in personalization ala one of the Lenovo e ink laptops' intention, but in a smaller more informative panel. This would also add functionality when the laptop is closed in small ways because like imagine you can play music out of your laptop while it's closed and have this tiny ass panel to skip songs without necessarily using your phone. Idk, it's cute and it makes sense to me.
I don't think that Lenovo with the ink screen like fully understood the assignment because stickers are like such a fundamental part of laptop culture and it partially is like the act of obtaining them and like buying them from people that makes them have their appeal
Mainly because it shows that you're engaged in a community or that like you kind of want to look like you're engaged in a community where as like having this panel that you can change everything on the back of your laptop in one go is a little bit less authentic to the way that like personal laptops have evolved culturally.
(I don't know, I don't trust people who don't have fucking stickers on the back of their laptop if that makes sense? Because they don't actually engage with like community in my mind.)
5. Flip switch cover peripheral ports.
I don't think that we as a society are done with ports yet, I find it funny how on some cheaper external port offerings from certain brands they'll actually just put a metal panel over an existing port and be like you didn't pay for that part. So I think it would be fun to have something like a sliding cover that can cover your peripherals to make sure that it's actually like waterproof, but still have them there.
6. I've actually seen Dell do this once I thought it was a really cool idea, I don't know why I haven't seen much more of it from them, but they at one point had a charger where the power block also functioned as an external battery so you could charge that separately and bring that with and have it go through that battery first before you would have to fully plug it in, that was so innovative and cool I have no idea why no one is doing it.
Also maybe find a way to do what I've seen some of the off brands do, which is that they have led panels on their power banks that you can cycle through different faces on to tell how charged it is and I think that's cute and fun. Thank you China and Taiwan, you're lovely and you make me happy.
7. BACK TO SWITCH COVERS
I think that all the brands that had it where they had the built-in laptop camera shutter that like worked on like a switch that was built into the opening latch, I think that was a really solid idea.
I think that's something that we should look into for like the camera and the mic again because people want privacy.
8. Turn stand feet/pop out stands.
I own these, and everyone who spends over an hour with me typically gets some form of these too.
Tumblr media
I would die for them, and I think the fact that like everyone I know who uses their laptop regularly for work typically has like some sort of tilt of some sort for it kind of like indicates that this isn't a completely shit idea to have it actually built into the laptop.
I do have a friend who has like a full magnet attached to the bottom of their computer as like a sticker thing that allows them to mount to any metal panel, I do think that's cool, it just makes me nervous.
10. Latch outer shells on both top and bottom for ease of repair/customization.
I think one of the really cool things that MacBooks had going for them for a while was that their community was actively making these hard shell covers that were a lower profile and completely changed the look of the laptop to be more personalized, I feel like there's ways to shrink that profile even further and allow people to kind of show their personality. I would love to have it so that I could just have the same thinness of laptop but like delatch the top shell and swap to a different look.
I also think that it just makes it more accessible for people to repair minor things on their laptops and kind of speeds up repair center things if you have like locking latches that you can push open to unlock the back of the computer, instead of doing the 900 different screws that are put there to stop you from trying to repair your computer.
Like it really feels like when laptops were first introduced they had this in a larger, clunkier way, but there was still an appeal to it because you could also swap laptop batteries and have some pre-charged ahead of time to swap in and out, I still think that's a great idea.
I still love the idea of just being able to pop out one laptop battery while I'm traveling, have like a reserved charge that doesn't last for like super long, but then popping a new fully loaded battery and then I have like another 10 hours of work.
Just fun things:
- silicone stickers that operate as wrist rests/edge dullers for the sake of my wrist
-snap on rubberized protective cases from the official companies with an official design for them to lock onto place.
-going back to the idea of switch cover ports just like in spirit, I think that one of the really nice things that Microsoft has done in their actual design of their computers over the years is like finding ways to attach their accessories to the body of their computer, I'm pretty sure they as well as Asus had it at one point where they had kind of like this sliding slot like a DS stylus on their laptops I think that was really cool idea and I think it should be expanded via micro modules.
So like this would also be making module upgrades something that's more accessible but less intrusive for the average consumer by having it housed in an internal little compartments ala how you do it with towers, and having it be smaller improvements that help your computer last over time, like a very low profile USB that suddenly adds like a terabyte or two to your memory, if you've seen modern USB sticks they can store a lot I think it's just a great idea and having a little easily accessible but closeable bay for them is a move.
-this is not for laptops, this kind of verges on smartphone territory, I'm just fucking bundling it here because it's tech but, if MP3 players ever come back I want one that has a screen with like a tamagotchi on it. I want to feed that fucker.
I also think that these little tamagotchi shits could be amazing pdas, or some kind of like less intrusive version of a smartphone but with less like apps and shit like that. More like here's this tiny little guy and he manages your calendar, and he likes when you play songs on Spotify cuz he does a little dance.
I think having it so then you can plug them into your computer and access a little database and like swap out your little friend for different people would also be fun because you know someone's going to have their God damn blorbo on there. Think those barbie mp3 players but worse ( ꈍᴗꈍ)
(Actually like if there was any way to like force Windows OS to not be shit and like make Windows more customizable and more beautiful, I would also want just a built-in fucking shimeijji option. Fuck, make that little fucking thing my internal search and I will give it my data. The trade-off is, I need to be allowed to dress this little fuck and change his colors, I want to feel like I'm on picrew for a moment before I have my tiny little mascot that I sell my fucking information to.)
-full on, this isn't a hardware thing, this is a software thing and my biggest gripe with tech
make Windows 11 more customizable, allow people to make skins and shit.
I think that like not fully unlocking customization for Windows 11 users has slowed adoption, and that like allowing people to have more access to the code is going to fix a lot of their fucking issues. I also think that it would just help with like appealing to a that is growing to hate Microsoft for their bullshitn
I have seen fuckers running Linux who have essentially skinned it so then their battery is a goddamn life bar, and that's like peak nerd culture. I think that if Windows just found a way to open up to that kind of bullshittery they would have a lot more goodwill from people who are forced to use their computers.
Like full on the fact that I cannot customize all of my windows to like open to be like pastel pink with micro x's and shit like that which I think you were able to do on a previous windows version? Insane. I should be able to make this God damn computer a monstrosity in OS appearance if I want. If I want glitter to fucking follow my cursor then I should be able to do that with ease and without windows resetting it every nine minutes.
LET ME ESHITTIFY MY OWN DEVICE WITH EASE.
