Splash Down at Top Waterparks Across the Midwest
Courtesy of The Points Guy by Kristine Hansen
Orlando is far from the only place to find cool waterparks, and warm weather isn’t required for a good splash in the water. Across the Midwest, there are cozy hotels with indoor waterparks that are perfect for when the weather isn’t quite warm enough to swim outside, and there are also outdoor waterslides and wave pools for summer.
Check out these waterparks in the Heartland, from the country’s oldest in the waterpark capital of America to one inside the Mall of America in the Twin Cities to a tiki-inspired park in Rapid City, South Dakota. Some of these waterparks have on-site hotels, but, if not, we have points hotels to recommend nearby as well.
Noah’s Ark Water Park (Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin)
The Wisconsin Dells, the “waterpark capital of America,” sits 45 minutes north of Madison, Wisconsin, and, as you might expect, offers many places to have fun getting wet. Like, Noah’s Ark Waterpark, a true original open since 1979. It’s America’s largest waterpark, featuring 51 slides, including Raja, which opened last year and is the world’s largest King Cobra dual slide. There are also two wave pools and two lazy rivers. (Regular tickets are $39, $29 for those under 48 inches and over 55 years old. Save $5 with online booking. Admission is free for those under 36 inches.)
Related: The Best Credit Cards for Entertainment Spending
(Photo courtesy of Noah’s Ark Waterpark)
Since there’s no on-park hotel, use your Hilton points to stay nearby at Hilton Garden Inn Wisconsin Dells or the brand-new Hampton Inn & Suites at Wisconsin Dells Lake Delton (reward stays at each range from 23,000 points to 50,000 Hilton Honors points per night).
Kalahari (Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin)
Rocking a African-wild-animals theme, Kalahari (a hotel with its own indoor-outdoor waterpark) features surfing on the FlowRider ($30 per person for 60 minutes for two to 10 people; private rentals start at $250 for 60 minutes). Also popular are the lessons in becoming a mermaid and how to fight off a (fake) shark attack ($35 for one to two people for 30 minutes, $30 each for three to five people for 60 minutes), as well as thrill-seeker rides like the Swahili Swirl and a virtual-reality experience. Build in adult R&R at Spa Kalahari, too, or amp up your stay by booking a private outdoor bungalow.
Kalahari resorts are also in Sandusky, Ohio; Round Rock, Texas; and the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. Rates start at $269 for a double room for a date in June 2019 with access to waterpark included. If you prefer to purchase a day pass to the waterpark, those start at about $45 per day.
Consider: Holiday Inn Express Wisconsin Dells (from 35,000 IHG Rewards Club points) Hampton Inn & Suites at Wisconsin Dells, Lake Delton (23,000 to 50,000 Hilton Honors points), Hilton Garden Inn Wisconsin Dells (from 23,000 to0 50,000 Hilton Honors points), Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Wisconsin Dells (from 17,500 Marriott points) and SpringHill Suites by Marriott Wisconsin Dells (from 25,000 Marriott points).
Great Wolf Lodge (Gurnee, Illinois)
This chain of hotel waterparks has a location in Gurnee, a northern suburb of Chicago, near Six Flags Great America (which also has an waterpark). A whopping 10 (yes, 10!) dining and snack venues inside the lodge means your family — even the pickiest eaters — will never go hungry. Great Wolf has 113 slippery attractions, including Coyote Canyon (a four-story slide) and an activity pool called Chinook Cove. We found rates starting at $349 for a double room for a date in June 2019, though off-season dates can be much less expensive (plus resort fee).
(Photo courtesy of Great Wolf Lodge)
To access this waterpark, you need to be a guest of the hotel, though a limited number of additional wristbands may be purchased from the hotel if you have visitors, at $50 each. To ramp up your earnings, you can book using your Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card to earn 10 miles per dollar when booking at Hotels.com/Venture. (Here’s a peek at the Great Wolf Lodge in Kansas City.)
Six Flags Great America (Gurnee, Illinois)
Not all Six Flags parks have a waterpark, but this one in Gurnee does. Seventeen attractions that get you wet are a nice compliment to the amusement park’s nostalgic rides like Logger’s Run. Your kid can hang 10 with Surf Rider or scream with delight down the Dive Bomber’s five-story freefall, and the whole family can hang out in the Monsoon Lagoon. (Gate prices start at $77 or $57 for those under 48 inches; children 2 and under are free. Save $25 when booking online at least one day before your trip.)
(Photo courtesy of Six Flags Great America)
Since there’s no hotel on property, stay nearby at Courtyard by Marriott Chicago Waukegan/Gurnee or SpringHill Suites Chicago Waukegan/Gurnee (both are Category 3 hotels within three miles of Six Flags Great America and start at 17,500 points per night).
Venetian Waterpark (Maple Grove, Minnesota)
Flaunting its Venetian theme right down to the streetlamps and building facades, this 25,000-square-foot indoor waterpark (with two waterslides, a toddler area, basketball hoops and floating obstacle course), helps you cash in on IHG Rewards Club points — and you never have to leave the property, since it’s also home to the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Maple Grove/Arbor Lakes (from 35,000 IHG points per night, fourth award night free if you have the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card). Your hotel stay includes admission to the waterpark.
In addition to the waterpark’s concession stand, there is a casual restaurant in the hotel serving a breakfast buffet and family-friendly options like pizza for dinner. Dave & Buster’s is within walking distance. Maple Grove is 18 miles from downtown Minneapolis. Note that the waterpark is open Friday to Sunday most weeks, with additional days available during select weeks.
Surfari Joe’s (Watervliet, Michigan)
Imagine 18,000 square feet of waterpark fun — enough to keep you busy all weekend. On an upper deck above two slides, the Zambezi River Run and Lino’s Lagoon activity pool, the Water Hole Grill & Bar serves up kid-friendly foods and glasses of wine from local vineyards for the adults. Because the connecting hotel, which opened in 2018, is a Fairfield Inn & Suites, you can also redeem Marriott points for your stay. A room with two queen beds starts at 17,500 Marriott points per night, which is a great deal compared to the paid rates than can go north of $200 per night. (Here’s how to earn 100,000 bonus Marriott points until April 24.)
Castaway Bay at Cedar Point (Sandusky, Ohio)
Most people know Sandusky for its outdoor theme park, Cedar Point, but there is also a 38,000-square-foot indoor waterpark with a tropical theme at Castaway Bay. White Adirondack chairs are lined up at the shoreline (lapped by waves!) and provide a comfy spot to keep an eye on the kids as they zip down a tube slide or splash in the pool. A Quaker Steak & Lube on site, a breakfast buffet and a deli, make meal time easy.
Castaway Bay has 237 rooms and family suites. Rates were $259 for a double room for a date in June 2019, with an easy-pay option of $43.17 for six payments if you wanted to spread out the cost of the stay.
The Holiday Inn Express & Suites Sandusky, where a room with two beds starts at 40,000 IHG Rewards Club points, is just across the bay. This means you could use an annual 40,000 award night available from the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card.
Big Splash Adventure (French Lick, Indiana)
Overnight accommodations at Big Splash Adventure make a visit to this 40,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor waterpark a breeze. If it does get warm out, the retractable roof pops open. Of the 10 attractions, one is adults-only (Palm Cove, a hot tub) and the others are family-friendly. These attractions range from Pirate’s Plunder (a body slide) to Buccaneer Bay, a three-story structure housing 10 platforms and 50 interactive play features. Rates were $199 for a double room with two-day waterpark passes included for a date in June 2019. (Waterpark day passes are available for $24 for those 46 inches and above, $19 for those below 46 inches and seniors 60 years old and over. Children 2 and under are free.)
(Photo courtesy of Big Splash Adventure)
Nearby points hotels include: Best Western Plus French Lick (from 24,000 points), Days Inn by Wyndham Jasper (15,000 points) and Holiday Inn Express & Suites Jasper (from 15,000 IHG points).
Great Wolf Lodge (Bloomington, Minnesota)
In 2017, the waterpark inside the Mall of America transitioned from its previous ownership (Water Park of America) into the Great Wolf Lodge brand — with a new look after a $30 million renovation. Entirely indoors, there are 11 water activities for all ages, from the zero-depth Cub Paw Pool to the four-story Wolf Rider Wipeout. Eight restaurants on site take care of the hungry. There is a climbing wall and ropes course (in Great Wolf Adventure Park) for older kids, and a bowling alley. Rates were $249 for a double room for a test date in June 2019.
Just like at the Great Wolf Lodge in Illinois, you can book your stay via Hotels.com to earn rewards, but you generally must stay at the Great Wolf Lodge in order to play in the waterpark.
Raging Rivers Waterpark (Mandan, North Dakota)
Spanning four acres, Raging Rivers Waterpark is entirely outdoors, with new attractions added on a regular basis. Four years ago, the Aqua Play area debuted, with about 60 interactive games and toys in the water, such as water canyons and pull ropes. Two tube slides and two speed slides are joined by an 800-foot-long lazy river. Concessions are on site. (Day passes are $15, $12 for kids under 48 inches and seniors 62 and over, and $8 for spectators and nonswimmers. There’s also a special $10 twilight rate from 4pm to 8pm every day. Children 3 years and under are free.)
(Photo courtesy of Raging Rivers Waterpark )
Points stays nearby include: Radisson Hotel Bismarck (from 38,000 points), Country Inn & Suites by Radisson (from 38,000 Radisson points), Holiday Inn Bismarck (from 20,000 IHG points), Hampton Inn & Suites Bismarck Northwest (24,000 to 40,000 Hilton points) and Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Bismarck South (from 7,500 points)
Splasher’s of the South Seas (Grand Forks, North Dakota)
Connected to Canad Inns, hotel guests receive a reduced price to enter Splasher’s of the South Seas ($9 instead of $23 per person). Within this 40,000-square-foot waterpark, there’s plenty to keep kids of all ages happy, from the East Australian Current (basically a lazy river) to a Kids Play Area in the water to the Rarotonga “cannonbowl” slide for kids with an adrenaline streak. Garbonzo’s is the resident pizza joint, within a family entertainment center with arcade games. Rates were $169 for a double room for a date in June 2019.
For a points stay nearby, consider: Hilton Garden Inn Grand Forks-UND (20,000 to 30,000 points); Hampton Inn & Suites Grand Forks (22,000 to 30,000 points); Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott East Grand Forks (from 12,500 points); Springfield Suites by Marriott Grand Forks (from 12,500 points); Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, Grand Forks, ND (from 38,000 points); Staybridge Suites Grand Forks (from 25,000 IHG points); and Holiday Inn Express & Suites Grand Forks (from 30,000 IHG points)
WaTiki Indoor Waterpark & Resort (Rapid City, South Dakota)
This 30,000-square-foot waterpark is connected to hotels including the Fairfield Inn and Suites and the Residence Inn by Marriott Rapid City, which is a Marriott Category 5 property (requiring 35,000 points per night). Rates include free hot breakfast, and there’s a full kitchen in the room to whip up snacks and light meals. At the waterpark is a Starbucks café, a pizza restaurant and Sliders Bar & Grill, alongside water-soaked attractions like Sink Hole, Maui’s Body Slide and a lazy river.
(Photo courtesy of WaTiki Indoor Waterpark Resort)
Instead of spending 35,000 Marriott points per night, you could also use a Category 1-5 certificate available each year from cards such as the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card or Marriott Bonvoy Business
American Express® Card.
Castle Rock Resort & Waterpark (Branson, Missouri)
Branson, one of the Midwest’s most popular destinations for family entertainment, is home to this waterpark, which is both indoors (including lap pool and a couple of three-story slides, one of which is a closed tube) and outdoors (open seasonally with a 500-gallon tipping bucket, waterfalls and kiddie pools with rain showers). A 600-foot-long lazy river indoors is an ideal spot to chill on a winter day. Outdoors, you will find a multilevel sundeck filled with places to relax and rest. Rates were $139 for a double room for a date in June 2019.
(Photo courtesy of Castle Rock Resort & Waterpark)
Grand Harbor Resort & Waterpark (Dubuque, Iowa)
This whimsical indoor waterpark features a lazy river, two giant whirlpools, rope ladders for kids to climb on and, of course, waterslides. A Tony Roma’s Restaurant and Lounge in the resort might satisfy your food needs, but if not, there are plenty of fast-casual options within the East Dubuque region, including Jimmy John’s and an A&W. Rates were $179 for a double room for a date in June 2019. If you just need a ticket to the waterpark, the rate varies by day, but starts at around $8 to $12 per person.
Nearby points hotels include: Hilton Garden Inn Dubuque Downtown (27,000 to 30,000 points), Hampton Inn Dubuque (22,000 to 30,000 Hilton points), TownePlace Suites by Marriott Dubuque Downtown (from 17,500 points), Holiday Inn Dubuque/Galena (from 25,000 IHG points) and Best Western Plus Dubuque Hotel & Conference Center (from 20,000 points).
Bottom Line
If your family is looking for a waterpark in the Midwest, this list should more than get you started in the right direction, even if you are hoping to travel using your points.

The Top 10 Kayaking Destinations in Indiana
Where Should I Kayak In The Hoosier State? Best Places To Paddle On The Water.
Navigation
Sugar Creek Camparound And Canoe Rentals
Blue River
Lake Michigan
Cedar Lake
Kankakee River
Pigeon River
Lake Monroe
White River West Fork
Big Pine Creek
Downtown Canal
Indiana is a beautiful state with lots of stunning scenery. For kayakers, there are plenty of creeks, rivers, lakes, and streams to visit. You can enjoy canoeing and kayaking in so many different places here—but which ones are the best of the best?
While there’s no real objective answer to this question, we can at least make some recommendations. Here we’re listing down the top 10 kayaking destinations in Indiana, including lakes and rivers of all levels, so you have plenty to choose from. And if you’re the type who really loves the water and can’t get enough of Mother Nature, then why not use this as your guide and visit them all?
Some may even say the best way to explore the great Indiana outdoors is from the water. Get ready for countless hours of fun. Let’s get started.
1. Sugar Creek Campground and Canoe Rentals
youtube
The Sugar Creek Campground is definitely one of the most popular water trails in Indiana. Located in Crawfordsville in western Indiana, this peaceful creek runs through the beautiful Turkey Run and Shades State Parks.
Bring a packed lunch and stop-off at various sandbars where you can collect shells and rocks, or just relax and breathe in the relaxing atmosphere before continuing your journey.
There are plenty of photo ops to enjoy, between the sandbars and the historic bridges, so make the most out of them! If you’re just starting out and you want to try kayaking, this is perhaps the best place to start. You won’t be spending most of your time in the water, so it’s perfect for beginners.
2. Blue River
youtube
This jewel in southern Indiana flows through one of the most scenic areas of the state. Blue River offers extensive forests, numerous caves, rural farmlands, and even historical sites! Its true appeal lies in its diversity. There’s plenty to take in as you take a trip down the river.
Rent a kayak or canoe, or bring your own—this trip takes around five hours to complete.
3. Lake Michigan
youtube
Northern Indiana has its own contender when it comes to the top kayaking spots in the state. Part of Lake Michigan is found here, and it is known to be one of the best places to go if you’re planning to paddle in Indiana. Visit the Whihala Beach in Whiting, North Michigan, and relax on the river beach before launching your kayak.
There are also plenty of beaches of Indiana Dunes to paddle in. See miles of beautiful dunes along its waterways. This is great for those who want a longer trip, because Lake Michigan is known for its affordable campsites.
4. Cedar Lake
youtube
If you can’t get enough of kayaking, perhaps nearly 800 acres of water should be enough. Cedar Lake is an enormous body of water, and it’s actually the largest natural lake in Northwest Indiana.
Of course the water alone isn’t the only thing to enjoy here. There are parks, beaches, and picnic areas dotted around the lake for you to explore and enjoy. If you want a lazy day spent slowly kayaking, this is the Indiana lake for you.
And after a tiring day of paddling, the wide range of restaurants scattered around the lake would offer a worthy selection for any person’s appetite.
5. Kankakee River
youtube
The Kankakee River was a popular trade route ten thousand years ago. This river isn’t just historic—it’s also stunningly beautiful. The lush lands surrounding the Kankakee River make it one of the best water adventures in Indiana. These views were beautiful way back then, and they remain as beautiful now.
Families, friends, and couples would definitely find this place relaxing. Bring your fishing rods and prepare to spend all day admiring the gifts of nature!
6. Pigeon River
youtube
Pigeon River isn’t the most exciting name for a kayaking destination—but it’s still very special because it is one of the most fishing-friendly rivers on this list. The river is populated by trout, catfish, and bluegill. While the river itself is narrow and shallow, it is covered by greenery including sycamore, ferns, buttonbush, and sugar maple trees.
Beginner kayakers rejoice! Pigeon River is a good pick if you just want to test out your skills.
7. Lake Monroe
youtube
What if your family isn’t really big on kayaking and you want to go anyway? Well, the vast Lake Monroe is a popular staycation spot for Indiana families. There are plenty of water activities to enjoy: if they don’t like to kayak, maybe they’ll enjoy a jet ski?
You can also rent canoes, paddleboards, and of course, kayaks. This is a place where families can just relax and enjoy their time together.
8. White River West Fork
youtube
We have a Blue River, a Pigeon River, and now we also have a White River. But this amazing water destination is actually draped with all shades of green. In fact, Earth tones dominate this place because of all the sycamore, river birch, and oaks.
We recommend the trip from Waverly to Henderson’s Ford Bridge. This river is also great for those who want to spot some Canadian geese, ducks, cranes, and herons. If you’re a bird watcher or just an animal lover in general, you’ll appreciate this one a lot.
9. Big Pine Creek
youtube
This is Indiana’s only section of real whitewater paddling, about 20 miles west of Lafayette. Spring rains in April and May can turn the Big Pine Creek into a series of whitewater rapids, so watch out for that. Summertime paddling isn’t so great here because the dry periods may bring insufficient water levels for good paddling.
But with its beautiful cliffs, wildlife, and trees, this is a great pick especially if you time your visit right.
10. Downtown Canal
youtube
Now we are wrapping this up with a bit of a unique entry because not everyone wants to get in touch with nature. The Downtown Canal is a 3-mile loop that gives a place for the city-dwellers to canoe down the water right in the middle of the city. Rent a single or double-kayak and pay by the hour. You can also bring your own boat and enjoy it all you want.

Six Flags Fiesta Texas & San Antonio 2013
August 31-September 3, 2013 Six Flags Fiesta Texas Photos | San Antonio Photos
Saturday morning technically came at about 1:20am. That’s when the other Matt showed up and disrupted our sleep. His flight was delayed by several hours in Atlanta. I swear, he has the worst luck with flights. Anyways, I didn’t get much sleep after that. But we had to get up early to go pick up the rental car, so 7:30 it was.
We got ready and headed down to the lobby as the front desk called us a cab. We got in and out of Enterprise pretty quickly with a cute little Hundai car. Then we immediately headed to Walmart for supplies and breakfast. Then we headed out to the La Cantera area of San Antonio.
La Cantera is a development that houses some resorts, a large mall, Six Flags, and other things. They took old rock quarries and redeveloped them, and it turned out very nice. Joe and Hannah parked at the mall and rode into the park with me and the Matts since I have national parking with my season pass. We took the opportunity to take some pictures of the coasters from the top of the cliffs of the quarry that the park sits in.
We got to the park, parked, and then headed to the entrance, snapping pix along the way. The front gate area is different, but nice. There was Tejano and Mexican pop playing at the plaza, which was nice and different. We met up with the other coaster geeks there for the morning walkback. Thank you, Jeffery Seibert, for that. You’re great, and I’m glad you’re doing your thing at Fiesta Texas. You’re enthusiasm is infectious.
So we got in to our group, and then I saw Tommy and his group, so they joined us as we all walked back for first rides on Iron Rattler, the reason I came to Texas. We waited while it tested. I decided to try the back of the train out first.
Iron Rattler-My only wish was that it would be half as good as Texas Giant since Rocky Mountain Coasters rebuilt it. It definitely delivered. It’s no Giant, but it’s a great ride, and I wish it were closer. The first drop, even with major slowdown at the top, is really great, as is the double up that follows. The overbanks and dive off the cliff are amazing, and the zero G roll feels natural and not at all like an inversion. It had airtime too. The twisting section where the helix used to be was odd but a lot of fun. I wish it were a little faster thru there, but its still great, and then the drop back off the cliff and then into the tunnel is chock full of airtime. Oh, and that blue lit tunnel with mist is amazing, which leads into some major air before the break run. The ride is a solid 9.5 in my book.
We were told to get back in the queue in the station when we got off, but I somehow missed that, and I didn’t get the second consecutive ride, but that’s okay. Most everyone else did, and after some delay, we were off to explore the park, but not before I got a gigantic (Gigante?) foam cowboy hat that I wore most of the morning. Next up was a ride on the park’s awesome mine train.
Road Runner Express-This is by far the best non-Disney mine train I’ve been on. It’ was very aggressive, very forceful, and had decent theming (I’ve heard it had better theming in the past). Granted, it’s mostly just drops and figure 8 style helices, but that’s what made it fun. I really enjoyed it, and wish I’d have ridden it again, but never actually got back around to it.
We headed over to the train next which we rode around towards the front of the park. The whole park, while it could use a little more shade, was really beautiful. The waterfalls off the cliff, the scenery, everything.
Poltergeist-This is my 4 Premier spaghetti bowl coaster, and the last one in the states. Maybe one day I’ll get to China to ride the last one, but whatever. I really like these coasters, and this one was running well. It had a much faster launch than Joker’s Jinx, and the lack of a Mid Course always helps the second half of the ride.
I wanted to ride the Sky Screamer, but we didn’t. We did head back to the Gulley Washer rapids ride, which was nice, but not outstanding. Why don’t more parks theme their rapids ride? Give me something to look at if all I’m going to do is meander around. It’s not like it was a soaking wet ride. Anywho, so we got off of that and headed over to the next credit of the day.
Superman Krypton Coaster-Most people felt it to be too tame, but I like it. The first drop beside the cliff was different. I love the zero G roll, the climb up the cliffs with a helix on top, the proximity of the mid course brakes to the cliff walls. All of it very smooth and fun. Is it a top 10 ride for me? Not with Iron Rattler across the park, but it’s still very fun.
Those of us that needed the credit headed to Kiddee Koaster next. Then we all headed to Bug’s White Water Rapids, the parks highly themed superflume ride. The queue was well done, and the whole ride was just excellent. I like that it’s so highly themed. I even wore the hat on the entire ride.
At this point in the day we all decided to split up. Some were taking a break from the park, others were going to power ride. Joe, Hannah, and I decided to go to the park’s water park for a while. So we went out to the car and switched stuff out, then headed in to the water park. I changed into my swim gear and immediately wished I’d brought in my flip flops. The ground was so hot.
We started out by going into the wave pool for a bit, then Joe and I got in line for their Tornado slide. The ride op put us in with 2 other guys, and we had to be over the weight limit. I went down the large drop into the funnel backwards, which scared the crap out of me, and then we started sliding around the funnel. I’ve never went that far up a funnel wall. It was amazing.
We went back to the wave pool and then made our way over to another slide. Without shoes, it was very uncomfortable going up the stairs and what not, but we made it. Then we went to the bowl slide, which was also really great (I love those). Then we ended up in the lazy river. It was actually pretty decently themed. Ultimately we headed back to the wave pool, then lounged by the wave pool. I even took a nap.
As it got cooler out, we finished up with the water park. I took our stuff back to the car and made my way back in. We hit up Goliath first.
Goliath-Another Batman clone at another park. Two in one city. Very forceful at the end of the day, and very nice placement. I liked the plaza for it, but I kind of wish they would have came up with a more Hispanic name to go along with the section. Oh well. Missed opportunity. I get that they’re trying to use their brand, but you should also know your market.
Nobody wanted to ride Boomerang with me so I put it off and got a Margarita instead. We met back up by Rattler, which had a decent line, so we headed around the park again to Pandemonium.
Pandemonium-Possibly due to the margarita and heat, I immediately got sick to my stomach on the walk back to Pandemonium. I was having (and would continue to have) stomach issues on the trip. Not sure what the cause, but I was having terrible acid reflux and some other issues. I was not looking forward to a spinny ride. But I wasn’t going to just not ride either. Honestly, I felt better after riding. The line was short. This was one of the better rides I’ve had on this layout, this being my 4. I love the setting in this park, but otherwise Pandemonium is a rather unremarkable spinning coaster that is good for families and serves a purpose.
After Pandemonium we got in the only semi-long line thus far, for the Scooby Doo dark ride. This was a clone of all of the ones that Paramount had ordered (and Cedar Fair thusly changed). The gags and guns were working well, and I ended up getting over 2000 points (the most in my Mystery Machine). Ed and Bill went to the Frisbee as the rest of us, sans Jill (who took a break) went to the Ferris Wheel to get some pictures. Then we went over to Scream, the drop/shot tower, but the line was long and it was only running one of three towers. The group rode Hustler, a pool table spinny ride instead as Ed, Joe, and I sat out.
The sun was setting and it was cooling off. Everyone wanted to ride Goliath, but I decided to sit it out instead of ride again. Joe and Hannah sat out too. Then we wanted to go back and ride Rattler more. Matt went to get a margarita, but the stall was closed. I stopped off to get a lap on Boomerang, but it had mechanical issues and was closed. Wish I’d known when I entered the huge queue. Oh well. So it was time to go back to Iron Rattler. The line was about 30 minutes long, but that was okay, it’s worth it.
At nite, having run all day, the ride was more aggressive. It was slightly better than in the morning, and anything is better in the dark. Plus, the tunnel was really great at nite. Iron Rattler is definitely a strong, solid ride, and can serve as a signature coaster in any park.
Fiesta Texas is a great park. It’s only missing a decent wooden coaster and a hyper, in my opinion. As much as I wanted to, I never stopped to watch a whole show, but what snippets I saw were very good. The park is beautiful, clean, the food offerings were good (BBQ smelled really great), and I had a great time.
After the park we dropped Joe and Hannah off at their care before heading back to the room. Matt Scott and I headed back down to the River Walk. We had dinner at Mias, and it was very good. Plus Matt finally got to mark visiting The Alamo off his bucket list.
I got a text from Tommy. They were heading out for the evening and told me and Matt where to meet them for drinks. Every second I spent in San Antonio, I loved it even more. The city is so friendly and beautiful at nite. I think we got back to the room around 2:30 am.
Sunday was Schlitterbahn day for everyone else. I ended up still not feeling good. Stomach issues every morning and evening, plus the heat were draining. So I dropped Matt and Matt off at Schlitterbahn. It looked amazing, as did Comel river tubing. I really want to get back out there. If I can find a cheap flight, maybe next year, and focus on a day at the Bahn. I lounged at the hotel for a bit then headed to San Antonio’s Horrific Film Fest to support Tommy and the gang at the world premier of The Cabin. I got there during the last bit of Vegas Vampires, which wasn’t very good. The Cabin, however, was really great. It’s an odd thing when the villain is actually sitting right beside you in the theater, as you’re watching him in the movie. The Cabin won an award for best short film (Or was it best director? I don’t remember).
I headed back to freshen up at the Hotel and grabbed a burger at Whattaburger for dinner. I met back up with everyone at a saloon for drinks, and then we went to another place for the evening, which turned out to be another late nite for me, but that’s okay.
I got up early and dropped the car off on Monday morning. I went back to the room and slept in before finding my way to a bus stop and exploring River Walk some more, as well as down town San Antonio. I just can’t say enough good things about the city. I could really move there. I made it back to the room and packed up for my early morning flights.
I really did have a great time, and hope to head back to San Antonio for more of the city sooner rather than later.
