Residents say authorities are dragging their feet to aid a historically African American neighborhood in Fort Myers Florida.

Following the disruption of Hurricane Ian, low-income communities in Florida are reportedly still awaiting assistance from authorities and lawmakers.

According to NPR, the storm’s aftermath has caused a shortage of resources for many communities, including loss of electricity, unsanitary water that looks brownish, and putrid aromas from sewage.

In a report by the outlet, Black residents in Fort Myers, Florida, revealed the damage to their homes that resulted from the hurricane.

“They’re saying the islands got destroyed. Well, we’re destroyed, too. We’re really messed up here,” said 24-year-old Lexxus Cherry, a resident in the Dunbar area. The historically African American neighborhood consists of “squat homes” and reportedly faced the crisis on its own.

Cherry’s uncle, Ta’Wan Grant, explained that he observed a pattern of a lack of attention toward low-income communities after they experienced natural disasters. The hurricane ripped away his air conditioning unit, leaving a hole in the side of his home

“I understand that the city is trying its best to restore everybody’s power,” he said. “But this is a common thing that I’m seeing in cities around America. Whenever a disaster happens, for some reason the city is slow to respond to people in ethnic communities, in low-income communities.”

“We are the ones who need the most help,” Grant said.

Cherry’s mother, who lives nearby in the low-income area, said she’s never seen one police officer ride through to check on the community.

Other residents in surrounding neighborhoods shared that they’ve found places to receive help and resources, including Sheddrick Jacobs and his wife, Sheneka, who live near Dunbar High School. According to Jacobs, the couple was headed to the centralized shelter with power and water at the Hertz Arena in Estero.

“I’m getting what I need, and I think other people are getting what they need too,” he said. “From what I see on Facebook and Instagram and then us coming to here, I think it’s been great.”

The storm affected many areas in and around the city on Sunday, estimating nearly 580,000 people left without electricity and 120 issued boil notices throughout 22 counties, according to PowerOutage.

Storm hit on Sep 28 (Wednesday) as a cat 4. Center went a bit north so we didnt get the worst of it in my neighborhood.

My neighborhood must have a hivemind since we all seem to have been tired of the storms shit and were outside in tropical storm level gusts, didnt know that many people actually rode out the storm. Disregarding storm warnings is just what Floridians do.

Damage wise it looks bad in my neighborhood but its mostly superficial; downed trees, powerlines, missing roof shingles, etc. Safe and sound in that regard, just A LOT of debris removal. Our barrier islands however basically dont exist anymore. Fort Myers beach, sanibel island, captiva island... yeah, they're just gone.

While actual damage varries from neighborhood to neighborhood our infrastructure is fucked, to put it politely. 160k without power on my county with 1 electric provider, no idea on the other providers numbers. Just gonna guess and say 3 days after we're at maybe 45% power restored. Water on the otherhand... My county does not technically have drinkable tap water, period. County water plants are down with no ETA for when they'll be up. (Got plenty of bottled water so no worries). Gasoline is hit and miss but with some patience you'll get it.

Mornings have been spent cleaning debris while afternoons are spent relaxing in the shade to avoid the heat.

On the brighter side, places are reopening. Walmart, publix, and some restaurants and shops are open so food/water aren't a major issue this time around. Hell, the local bar/liquor store never actually closed (again, florida things).

Special note: words cannot describe how thankful I am to my neighbors, letting me run a line to their generator. Can run the fridge and charge my phone, nothing more but that's all I need. I would be so far beyond miserable if not for their kindness.

Special note 2: all of my pineapple plants died. That hurts more than anything.

Special note 3: wear sunscreen, for the love of god wear sunscreen. Looking and feeling like a boiled lobster sucks.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Unlike the affluent seaside communities of Sanibel Island and Fort Myers Beach, where the media has descended to chronicle every detail of the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, the people who live in the squat homes in Dunbar have faced the crisis mostly on their own.

There's no electricity. Water comes out of the faucet, but it's little more than a thin brownish stream, unsafe to drink. A faint smell of sewage wafts up from the street.

When people here call the power and water authorities, they get only vague assurances. No promises, and no timeframes.

Cherry's uncle, Ta'Wan Grant, detects a pattern in their plight.

Cherry's mother, Chanel, who lives a few blocks away in low-income housing, underwent a kidney transplant in May. She says she's had "no water, no ice, no nothing," since Tuesday. "I haven't seen one police [officer] come to check on the community where we live," she adds.

Earline McCoy has lived next door since 1969. She's seen a lot of hurricanes come through here in the last five decades. But this one tops them all, she admits.

As the storm closed in, she evacuated to nearby Naples, "but they got hit just as bad, and I lost my truck there."

As she's pulling soaked rugs and clothing from the house, her boyfriend telephones. "Everything is gone," she tells him. "Every single thing we own is gone."

NPRLindsay Comstock removes ruined furniture from her home in the Dean Park Historic District of Fort Myers, Fla., after Hurricane Ian passed through the area. Comstock had evacuated with her family and had come back to her home to clean up, October 2, 2022.

Since Ian, she's already filed with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA. "They really did help me out" after Sandy, she says. "I'm hoping the same with this. It takes a little while."

Looking around the destruction that was her life, she seems resigned.

"This is just stuff, I can get it back," she says. "My family is safe. My dog is safe. It could be worse."
