Help in trying to stop the felling of 33,000 trees in Bengaluru
The Bangalore Development Authority(BDA) has announced the Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) project, an 8 lane, 65.5 km long road connecting Tumkur Road to Hosur Road estimated to cost 15,111.42 crores.
The draft Environmental Impact Assessment dated June 2020 reveals that the project requires the felling of 33000+ trees. The BDA has sought to acquire 25 acres forest area from the Jarakabande Forest, from which approximately 16 thousand trees are to be cut down.
The project will also have a grave impact on 6 water bodies which fall within the ambit of this project. The water resources and quality in the catchment areas of TG Halli will be impacted greatly. The proposed Peripheral Ring Road project will be in close proximity to the Bannerghatta National Park and Puttenahalli Bird Conservation Reserve endangering thousands of species while damaging the biodiversity of the city.The removal of such a huge number of trees will suffocate our Bangalore proudly known as the Garden city.
The project would have a devastating impact on Bengaluru's air quality, weather and its ecosystem. We as responsible citizens strongly oppose the PRR project. We demand that the project either be scrapped completely or be revised such that no harm is done to our environment.

M. Jaishankar (1977-2018)

M. Jaishankar, also known as Psycho Shankar, was an Indian serial killer known for his spate of rapes/murders between 2008 & 2011. He is believed to have been involved in around 30 rape, murder and robbery cases across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. He was accused of killing at least 19 women. After being captured by Indian authorities, Jaishankar was incarcerated in Bangalore, where he was diagnosed as being mentally ill. He committed suicide after an unsuccessful escape attempt in February 18. Jaishankar’s crimes are known to have begun around 2008. The first crime of his to be reported occurred on July 3, 2009, when he attempted to rape & murder P. Shyamala, 45. By August of that year he had raped & murdered 12 women, and raped a further 6 women. Jaishankar kept a machete in his bag, killing whoever resisted him. He would kidnap sex workers near dhabas (roadside cafes) on highways, raping and killing them brutally. He also targeted women living in farmhouses or other, similar, rural areas.
On August 23, 2009, Jaishankar raped & murdered 39-year-old police constable M. Jayamani. Usually stationed at the all-women police station in Kangeyam, Jayamani was on temporary assignment at Perumanallur for the visit of deputy chief minister M.K. Stalin. Jaishankar kidnapped her, raped her multiple times, and killed her. The police found her body 1 month later. Jaishankar and his accomplice P. Mohan Selvam were charged with the murder of 50-year-old K. Thangammal Ponnaya on September 10, 2009. The pair were acquitted in this case in 2014 due to insufficient evidence. The Tiruppur police began a manhunt for Jaishankar & arrested him on October 19, 2009. He was locked up at the Coimbatore Central Prison & was charged with 13 counts of rape & murder in Tiruppur, Salem & Dharmapuri. Whilst in custody he confessed that he enjoyed torturing women before raping & killing them. On March 17, 2011, police took Jaishankar to a fast-track court in Dharmapuri for a murder trial. The following day, armed reserve police constables M. Chinnasamy & Rajavelu were assigned to escort him back to Coimbatore. On this journey, Jaishankar managed to escape at the Salem bus stand at around 9:30pm. 2 days later, Chinnasamy shot himself due to shame. Jaishankar escaped to Karnataka, where he raped and murdered 6 women in a month in Bellary. He also killed a man & a child in Dharmapuri. At the end of April 2011 the police managed to trace his phone to Delhi. They initially believed that he had dumped his phone there, but in May, they traced his calls to Mumbai, where he stopped using it. A special team, made up of 2 sub-inspectors and 15 other officers, was assigned to find & arrest Jaishankar.
By May of 2011 the police had distributed wanted posters in public places across Karnataka & Tamil Nadu, looking for information about Jaishankar’s whereabouts. On the evening of May 4, 2011, he reached Elagi village in Karnataka on a stolen motorcycle. He approached Chandrakala Hotagi, working alone in a field, asking her for water & food. He proceeded to try and rape her, but she raised the alarm and her husband came to her rescue, along with a friend. Jaishankar tried to run away but Prakash Hotagi and other villages caught him and took him to the Zalaki police station. He was handed over to the Chitradurga police on May 5, 2011. Following his arrest he was kept at the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail in Bangalore – he was sentenced to 27 years in prison. Whilst at the jail he received treatment for psychiatric problems. On August 31, 2013, police took Jaishankar to the courthouse in Tumkur near Bangalore. After returning that evening, Jaishankar faked illness & was admitted to the prison hospital wing. There, he managed to get hold of a duplicate key & used it at 2am on September 1, 2013, when the daily guard change occurred. Police suspected that an insider helped him get the key. Jaishankar scaled a 20 foot wall, then walked across a 15 foot wall before finally climbing the 30 foot high compound wall. He then managed to safely cross the electric fence, since, luckily for him, it was not functional that night. It was reported that he carried a bamboo pole with him to balance on the walls & a bedsheet to use for cushioning the glass pieces on top of the wall. Jaishankar was injured during the escape & drops of his blood were discovered outside the outer wall. It was also reported that he was wearing a prison uniform during the escape. 11 jail staff, including 3 wardens, 2 jailors & 6 security guards, were suspended as a result of the escape. Police issued a red alert to all Karnataka police stations, also urging women to be careful in isolated areas. A reward of ₹ 500,000 was announced for any information leading to Jaishankar’s arrest. Police also analysed his behaviour, psychology and history in an attempt to predict his next actions. 10,000 wanted posters & 75,000 pamphlets with photographs of Jaishankar & in 5 languages (Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil, and Telugu) were printed. These were distributed in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Maharashtra.
During his 2nd escape Jaishankar had fractured his leg jumping from the 30 foot high wall of the prison compound. He didn’t contact his family in Tamil Nadu, but soon after his escape a police informant managed to get in touch with him. This informant lured Jaishankar to a dilapidated building near the Kudlu gate in Bangalore, promising him a motorcycle in order to escape the city. Instead, police arrested him at noon on September 6, 2013. It cost the government over ₹ 75,000 to treat his fractured leg at the Victoria Hospital, in an operation on September 23. After the surgery Jaishankar was sent to Central Prison in Bangalore with 24/7 CCTV monitoring his cell along with extra lights. The lock on his cell door was designed to be unreachable by the person within. It was also decided that in case of illness, Jaishankar would be treated in his cell, rather than being taken to the hospital wing. Police also agreed to deploy extra security while escorting him to trials in order to minimise the chance of escape. On February 25, 2018, Jaishankar unsuccessfully attempted a 3rd prison escape & was subsequently held in solitary confinement. 2 days later he committed suicide by slitting his throat with a shaving blade that he had acquired from a barber the day before. Jail staff discovered him lying in a pool of blood at 2:30am, during their daily rounds, and gave first aid. He was later moved to Victoria Hospital and it is there that he was declared dead at 5:10am.

Maa had come to stay with us for about 1 month. So, we planned that we should take her somewhere close-by during this visit. After choosing through the options, we decided on Hampi. Deepshree and I had been to Hampi in 2009 when we bought our new Maruti Swift. So, it was nearly 8 years since that time that we would be going back to Hampi.
We started from Bangalore at around 7 AM. We drove down to Yeswantpur and took the Tumkur Road. We drove past Neelamangala and continued on the Tumkur Road. After the Toll Gate, we found one Cafe Coffee Day. We stopped here to have breakfast. We had carried with us Bread, Butter and Bananas. After having that, we had coffee at Cafe Coffee Day. Then we continued our journey.
There are a few Toll Gates on this road. However, this time, we found that the Government has made very good toilets near every Toll Gate inder the Swachch Bharat Mission.
The Tumkur Road is a 6 lane road and is very well maintained. This continues till Chitradurga. After Chitradurga, the road till Hoskote was under construction when we were driving. This was a very dangerous road as the road was narrow and full of pot holes and there were numerous heavy trucks plying on the road. Nevertheless, we drove carefully and reached the Tungabhadra Riven banks.
Tungabhadra River was full of water when we were there and it looked beautiful. Driving down a few kilo meters, we reached the town of Hospete. Now, we had to reach Hotel Hyatt, Hampi. While Hampi is very close to Hospete, we soon discovered that the Hyatt Hotel in Hampi is about 25 KM away from Hospete. After a little bit of searching and help from the Hotel, we reached our hotel at around 4 PM.
We ordered Tea and Pakodas at around 5:30 PM. At 9 PM we went for dinner and we choose to go with the buffet. The staff in the dining hall of Hyatt were extremely friendly and courteous. We were given a royal treatment.
The next day, we booked a hotel cab to go around Hampi. After breakfast, at around 9 AM, we started on our way to Hampi. It takes around 40 minutes from Hyatt Hotel to reach Hampi. We first went to the Vittala Temple in Hampi. It was slightly away from the Hampi main town. We parked our car in the parking area and had to take the Government Bus to go from the Parking Area to the Temple. The ticket costs Rs. 25 per person for a round trip.
Vittala Temple is a very old temple an it is beautiful. The main attraction here are the musical pillars. We took a guide to take us around the temple.
Seen below is the place where the foreigners came to this Kingdom to trade their horses in exchange for Gold and Silver.
The pictures are where we find the musical pillars. An expert can make very good music by play on these pillars.
From this temple, we can see a hill which has a temple on top. We were told that the temple on that hill is where Lord Hanuman was born.
An interesting thing is that for all the temples, the artisans made a miniature of the temple on the body of the temple. The miniature is exactly the same as the actual temple..

From Vittala Temple, we went to the main Hampi ruins. Here are pictures from the Hampi ruins.
At the very end is the Virupaksha Temple. It is a Shiva Temple.
It was 3 PM by the time we came out of Virupaksha Temple. We went to a hotel in Hampi Town for Lunch. At around 4 PM, we started on our way to the Dam built on Tungabhadra River. By the time we reached there, Sun was setting and the sights were beautiful.

We started back from the Dam at around 6:30 PM. By the time we reached our Hotel, it was around 8:30 PM. We had buffet dinner once again in the hotel and went to bed.
Next morning, we had breakfast. We paid our bills and started back for Bangalore at around 10:30 AM. On the way back, we stopped at Chitradurga for lunch. There is decent hotel in Chitradurga where they serve South Indian meals.
By the time, we reached Bangalore, it was 7 PM.
  Hampi Maa had come to stay with us for about 1 month. So, we planned that we should take her somewhere close-by during this visit.

Umesh Reddy, also known was Rajulu, Ramesh, Venkatesh, and Hrishikesh Malagi, is an Indian rapist and serial killer who confessed to killing 18 women and was convicted in the murders of 9. The police believe that Reddy raped at least 20 women in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat, also suspecting that several of the crimes he committed have not been reported because the victims feared the social stigma. Reddy was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of India and is currently on death row.
Umesh Reddy was born BA Umesh in Basappa Malige, a village in Chitradurga district, Karnataka in 1969. He was selected in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and was posed in Jammu and Kashmir. While on guard duty at the house of a commandant, he tried to rape the commandant’s daughter before fleeing to Chitradurga district. In 1996 Reddy joined the District Armed Reserve (DAR) Police, who weren’t aware of what happened in CRPF. Reddy had been charged in a road rage incident but the local DAR inspector chose to ignore this “petty” case. Reddy completed his police training in Madhya Pradesh and then returned to Karnataka.
Reddy chose his victims carefully, usually targeting housewives between 11am and 3pm, when there would be no men at home. He would use a ruse, asking for a glass of water, in order to gain entry to the homes, before threatening them with a knife, forcing them to remove their clothes, tying them up and raping them. He would often choke his victims, raping them while they were unconscious. After raping his victims, Reddy would kill them and remove their jewellery in order to make the murder look like a robbery gone wrong. He would then escape, taking the victims’ underwear with him. Reddy was a cross-dresser, and was found wearing women’s lingerie under his clothes at the time of his arrest. In November 1996 Reddy tried to rape a high school girl who was walking at KEB Colony in Chitradurga. The girl struck him with a stone and escaped. On December 6, 1996, Reddy allegedly raped and murdered 16-year-old Roopa when she was returning home. The following month he was arrested and dismissed from DAR service when his first victim identified him at a Republic Day police parade purely by chance. Reddy, along with 4 other men, was charged with Roopa’s murder and was remanded to judicial custody (in 2004 he was acquitted due to lack of sufficient evidence). A court moved him to Bellary jail, and in March 1997 while being transferred, Reddy escaped. He went on to kill an income tax officer’s wife in Bangalore, a girl in Ahmedabad, 2 girls in Baroda and a widow in Kunigal. Reddy often stole lingerie that was pegged outside for drying in people’s backyards and was arrested on July 7, 1977 by Peenya police for this offence. When police raided Reddy’s room, they found a gunny bag full of lingerie. At the time of his arrest he told police his name was “Ramesh”. He escaped within 24 hours, again while being transferred, this time to the MICO Layout police station for interrogation about another case. The police initially tried to hide this escape, but Reddy’s father filed a habeas corpus petition in the High Court. 2 police officers were suspended and a lookout notice was issued in the name of Ramesh.
On February 28, 1998, Reddy raped and murdered 37-year-old Jayashree Maradi Subbaiah, a widow, in Peenya. The police believe that he raped Jayashree’s corpse multiple times. When her 8-year-old son came home from school, he saw Reddy in his house, who told the boy that an evil spirit had entered his mother’s body, so he had tied her to the window grill. He ran, saying that he was going to get a doctor. Reddy then tried to rape another woman – when she raised the alarm, he tried to flee by jumping from the first floor of the house. He sprained his ankle and was caught by neighbours, who turned him in. In 1999, Reddy once again managed to escape from police custody near Hirekerur, but before he could commit a crime he was arrested by inspector Nyame Gowda, in Chikkaballapur. On the night of March 3, 2002, Reddy made a 4th escape from police custody, while being transferred between Bellary and Bangalore, in a KSRTC bus. The DAR personnel of Bellary, who were accompanying him, claimed that he was handcuffed at the time, but Reddy denied this upon his arrest 2 months later. He said that he bought rum and chicken for the police officers, earning their trust, and when the bus stopped at a dhaba (roadside restaurant) near Hiriyur bypass, he asked them to remove his handcuffs so he could go and urinate. Once free, he ran into the fields and escaped. Over the following 2 months Reddy raped 3 girls in Davangere, Hubli-Dharwad and Pune. He stole 3 mobile phones and 2 credit cards and worked as a waiter in a Pune hotel, where he would steal cash and clothes. He then fled to Dharwad. On May 17, 2002, Reddy arrived in Bangalore from Tumkur and left his luggage in the cloakroom at the Yeshwanthpur railway station. Around 8am, Reddy visited a salon in the area to get a shave and a haircut, but as he entered the salon, auto-rickshaw driver Sathyavelu recognised him from the newspaper and an earlier court appearance. The driver called his brother, Rajendran, from a telephone booth and asked him to bring the police. Meanwhile, he kept watch on the salon and when Reddy left and began walking towards the railway station, Sathyavelu told the police and followed him. Inspector Nagaraja Urs intercepted Reddy near Sharief Nagar, and arrested him. At first Reddy claimed it was a case of mistaken identity, but eventually admitted that he was the serial killer at the police station. The police rewarded Sathyavelu with ₹ 20,000. Reddy was discovered wearing a bra and panties – his luggage contained 18 pairs of panties, 10 bras, 8 churidars, 6 saris, 4 blouses and 2 nighties.
Umesh Reddy was tried and convicted in 9 cases, including the rape of Jayashree Subbaiah. He was acquitted in 11 cases due to lack of sufficient evidence. On October 26, 2006, Judge K Sukanya of the Bangalore city fast-track court sentenced him to multiple death sentences, a 7 year sentence plus a ₹ 25,000 fine and a 10 year sentence plus a ₹ 25,000 fine. Reddy tried to gain the judge’s mercy by saying that he wanted to study and needed to take care of his mother, but the judge did not relent. Since the death sentence was the heaviest, the case was referred to the High Court. On October 4, 2007, a division bench of the Karnataka High Court also convicted Reddy but the judges couldn’t agree on the death sentence. Justice V G Sabhahit upheld the death penalty but Justice Ravi B Naik preferred prison labour for life with no hope of parole. A 3rd judge, Justice S R Bannurmath, was asked to resolve the tie on and February 18, 2009, Bannurmath upheld the death sentence. On February 1, 2011, the Supreme Court also upheld the sentence. Justices Altamas Kabir and A K Pathak argued that Reddy was not capable of being rehabilitated and that his rape and murder of Jayashree fell under the “rarest of the rare” category – a requirement for capital punishment in India. Reddy filed a mercy petition before the President of India, but on May 7, 2012, the Government of Karnataka rejected the plea. The President of India also rejected his mercy petition on May 12, 2013. Reddy filed a fresh petition which is now pending before a Supreme Court constitution bench.
