one last time - chapter 1

“Don´t get me wrong guys. I love not having cases 24/7, but this paperwork is a lot worse than the bad guys we deal with.”, Morgan groaned as he finished writing the last sentence of his most recent case file and put down his pencil. 

“I´d rather be out there kicking someone´s ass than working another day on this stuff here.”, Prentiss agreed as she got up to grab another cup of coffee. 

“Only positive thing about it is that I get to bring Henry to bed each night.”, JJ said which got Derek and Reid, who was currently reading over a case file, smiling. 

“Hey, what about a team night out tonight, huh?”, Emily suggested as she came back with her cup of coffee from the kitchen, “I´m so ready to get drunk. And we´ll probably won´t have a new case tomorrow either, because it seems like all serial killers have gone on vacation so..”

“Hate to disappoint you, my friend, but we just got a new case. Hotch wants everyone to meet in the conference room in 5.”, Garcia replied as she rushed by the group of friends to go and check in with Hotch. 

“Great, thank you Morgan!”, the dark haired agent hissed. 

“What do I have to do with this, Princess?”, he asked as he got up. 

“You jinxed it. Ugh, and I was so excited to get drunk tonight.”, Emily sighed and made her way up towards the conference room, followed by Reid, JJ and Derek who all followed their friend with an amused smile, embracing themselves for the case that was about to come. 

The team settled down in their usual seats before Garcia came rushing in to prepare everything for the briefing. Shortly after this, they all were joined by Hotch and Dave. 

“Let´s go, Garcia. he said before he took his seat and at his command, Penelope pressed a few buttons on her remote control. Within a few seconds, several crime scene pictures could be seen on the screen in front of them. 

“Embrace yourself for one of the worst cases the BAU has ever helped solve. Okay, I bet there were worse but you know what I mean. Anyway, the Boulder City Police Department, Nevada, is asking for our assistance on their most recent case.”, Garcia started to explain while pressing more buttons, “this is the Miller family. One out of five families that has been killed in the last five weeks. That makes one family per week. Mom Elisabeth and Dad Daniel have been stabbed, while their kids John, Ellen and Lucas have been strangled. Each family member has been put back into bed after they were killed.”

“How have they been found?”, Reid wanted to know. 

“Ellen, the middle child, was supposed to be on a dance competition two days later. She, of course, didn´t or couldn´t show up. It was quite unusual for any family member of the Miller´s to just miss an event without calling or texting. So Abby Stanford, a close friend of the family and also a Dance Mom on the same group as Elisabeth and Ellen, decided to go and stop by at the Miller residence and the rest you can imagine.”, Garcia explained. 

“How have the four other families been killed?”, Rossi asked. 

“The same way.”, again, Garcia pressed some buttons, “the second family that has been killed were the Rodgers, third was the Daniels, fourth the Boulées and the newest victims have been Sarah and Louis Parker, as well as their seven days old son Nick. There is no connection between all families. Each time, the mothers have been killed first, then the kids and the fathers at last.”

“Okay, so our unsub stabs the mothers first and strangles the kids last. But where and how does he hold them down or still for so long? He can´t do this all alone. He has to have a partner.”, Emily thought out loud, “and why kill the fathers at last?”

“Garcia, can you please only show the pictures of the living rooms of the families?”, Reid asked. 

“Sure, wait a second.”, the technical analyst replied while pulling up the pictures Spencer had asked for, “there you go.”

“Do you see this? The chairs?”, the genius pointed out. 

“Oh god, please tell me it´s not what I think it is.”, JJ said. 

“He makes the kids and the fathers watch the mothers die. This is how he get the control over them.”, Reid explained. 

“But we still don´t know why he kills the fathers this late. This has to have a deeper purpose.”, Rossi wondered. 

“A purpose we have to figure out as quick as possible. We´re gooing straight forward to week 6 and if our guy keeps up with his pattern, he´ll soon has his new victims. Wheels up in 20.”, Hotch said and with one last stern glare, he left the room. 

“Well, let´s get this started then.”, Emily said. 

“I already want my paperwork days back.”, Derek groaned as they all left the room to go to their desks to grab their go-bags and to head straight to the air strip, ready to tackle their new case.

Step. Step. Pirouette. Jump. Twirl.

It was like clockwork to Emily, the steps as natural as breathing. The tempo like a heartbeat. The crescendo of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake began and Emily turned to begin her next spin only to slip and topple into her coffee table. The resounding crash came from the lukewarm coffee that had been there since that morning and a candle Beth had gifted the woman some time ago. WIth a loud *THUD* she landed on the floor and laid there a moment. 

“Perhaps rehearsing in the living room wasn’t my brightest move...” She groaned, her rear a bit sore and the rug, which Jayden had gotten since Emily’s apartment was pretty much black, red, and the wood tone of the floors and such, and the coffee shop owner had thought a splash of light color like eggshell would lighten things up a bit. 

“Thank god Beth wasn’t here to see that.”
