John Galvin Duesler, Sr.
John Galvin Duesler Sr, 84, of Courtdale, passed away peacefully, Friday, August 23, 2024. John was born June 30, 1940 in Wilkes-Barre, son of the late Stephen Galvin Duesler and Anellia ‘Nell” Valaika Duesler.
John ‘Moose’ Duesler was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School Wilkes-Barre, where he exceled at basketball. After graduation, he began a lifelong career as a newspaper printer. John was a long-time employee at the Times Leader in 1978, when he joined the picket line to fight against the national conglomerate Capital Cities. John was one of the dedicated strikers who, with their families, launched The Citizens’ Voice Newspaper on October 9th, 1978. This family newspaper, despite all odds, is still in existence today, something John was so very proud of.
John met the love of his life, Dorothy Masonis, at Chuya’s Bar in Wilkes-Barre in 1960, marrying September 2, 1961, at St. Mary's Annunciation Church, Kingston. They enjoyed 60 years of marriage and created a legacy of four children, 13 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild.
John was a devote Catholic and parishioner of The Church of St. Ignatius Loyola in Kingston, serving as a eucharistic minister and member of their pastoral council. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus Assumpta Council 3987, holding office of Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator. He was active in their youth basketball tournament and Toys for Toys campaign, among many other fundraising events.
John was THE number one Notre Dame football fan. He was a longtime member of the Notre Dame Club of Hanover Township, travelling to many games in South Bend, Indiana. One of his proudest moments was accompanying his grandson Trevin on an unofficial visit. When he entered the locker room and looked around, John quickly told Trevin he was nowhere near big enough, the one time he was sad to be right.
John’s most favorite times were those spent with his family. He was proudest cheering on his grandchildren playing soccer, softball, volleyball, basketball, football, baseball, and wrestling, as well as while attending drama and musical events. He never missed anything they were participating in.
In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his wife Dorothy in 2022, grandson Tyler Joseph Cowman in 2021, and son-in-laws Christopher Dubaskas in 2023, and Shawn Cowman in 2024.
John is survived by sons, John Galvin Duesler Jr. and his wife Bernice, Huntingdon Valley; Sean Duesler and Jennifer Yarnell, Kingston; daughters, Diane Cowman, Kingston and Denise Duesler, Edwardsville; grandchildren, Trevin Cowman and wife Brittany, Alabama; Galvin Duesler and wife Ashley, Wyoming; Trey Cowman, Wilkes-Barre Twp; Regina Duesler, Washington D.C.; Kasen Heim, Edwardsville; John Galvin Duesler III, Huntingdon Valley; Cameron Duesler, Edwardsville; James Duesler, Huntingdon Valley; Seaman Aubrey Duesler, stationed in Italy; Nell Duesler, Huntingdon Valley; Molly Duesler, Edwardsville; Kaden Dubaskas, Edwardsville; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Carol and Ralph Flowers and lifelong friends Mary Nancy and Jack Kelley.
John’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Second Family Memory Care Center, staff at Providence Place in Drums, especially Mallory and Lucy, and angel Darlene and associates at Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the outstanding and compassionate care provided to our Dad and Grampy John.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hugh B. Hughes & Son Inc. Funeral Home, 1044 Wyoming Ave, Forty Fort.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at The Church of St. Ignatius Loyola, 339 N. Maple Ave., Kingston. Private interment will be in St. Mary's Annunciation Cemetery, Pringle, at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John’s memory to his grandson Tyler Cowman's memorial foundation, TyJo and Co., which is dedicated to aiding children in need, at https://luzfdn.org/types-of-funds/tyjo-co-memorial-fund/ or by mail to TyJo and Co., c/o The Luzerne Foundation, 34 S. Kicking Up A $10Billion Sporting Storm! Inside Saudi Arabia’s Plan To Dominate Football’s Premier League, PGA Tour Golf and More
— Image: Kryzsztof Nowak | August 10th, 2023 | Leaders | The Business of Sport
Sports fans have seen plenty of surprises this summer. Carlos Alcaraz won Wimbledon, ending years of domination of tennis by the trio of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. In golf the victors of the us Open and Britain’s Open were outsiders who were given odds of winning of 1% or less. On August 6th the all-conquering us women’s football team crashed out of the World Cup after Sweden scored a winning penalty. The ball crossed the goal line by only a few millimetres.
Yet the biggest shock has been off the field, as Saudi Arabia has barged into the sports industry. Pumped up on petrodollars and desperate to reinvent itself under Muhammad bin Salman (mbs), its 37-year-old de facto ruler, it has spent $10bn on players, teams and leagues, upending golf and football. That has upset Western fans, activists and politicians, who see it as “sportswashing” human-rights abuses, and complain about the desecration of the hallowed trophies of sport.
The Economist is no cheerleader for MBS (Oh well! F*** Yourself), but this sports-venting does not bear scrutiny. The West trades widely with Saudi Arabia, the deals will not make its bad human-rights record worse, and it is not clear that the country could or would monopolise and destroy any global sport. In a turbulent world many fans see their teams as a source of pride and stability. But many forget that sport is also a business that is being disrupted. It needs to be open to new capital and fresh ideas.
Sport has long seen investment splurges, whether by media tycoons or Russian oligarchs. Even by those standards the Saudi effort is big. In football it is paying for some of the world’s top players, including Karim Benzema, to play in a revamped domestic league. It controls Newcastle United, an English club, and may bid for the World Cup in 2030. In golf a Saudi-bankrolled tournament is merging with the pga Tour, America’s men’s circuit. The kingdom sponsors Formula 1, has deals in wrestling and boxing and is eyeing winter sports and e-sports.
Do not imagine that this is a modern version of Arab royals buying racehorses that catch their eye. Saudi Arabia’s plan is state-backed and more systematic than that. The kingdom views sport as a way to reinvest oil revenues and catalyse reform at home by creating a bigger services industry and boosting tourism. mbs is a volatile strongman, but he is also overseeing some liberalisation, including of women’s rights. The spread of a globalised, consumerist, sporting culture may help Saudi Arabia shift social norms away from austere religious conservatism.
The Saudi spree mirrors a surge in institutional capital flows into sport. Since early 2020 over $100bn of private-equity cash has been deployed. America’s baseball, basketball, hockey and football leagues contain brands with reliable cashflows (partly because these are self-regulating cartels). Europe’s soccer teams, which may be relegated, are riskier but sometimes undervalued given their big fan bases. Other sovereign buyers are active. Qatar, which hosted last year’s World Cup, has Paris St Germain, a French club, and a stake in the Washington Wizards, a basketball team. Bloomberg reckons 17 of Europe’s top 98 soccer clubs are now backed by sovereigns or institutional capital.
Many of these new investors see digital disruption as an opportunity. Revenues are in jeopardy, as viewers abandon traditional television, and in America “cut the cord” on cable packages that bundle sports. For old media firms this is a nightmare: Disney is looking for an investor to take a stake in espn, its huge, declining sports network. For nimble owners of teams and brands, digital disruption holds the promise of reaching audiences directly, with a more immersive, interactive experience.
Fans often fear change will ruin something that they love. However, sport is not just a competition between players, but also for an audience—and rival forms of entertainment do not stand still. Italy’s Serie A football league is a warning of what happens if reform is too slow. Its revenues are falling, its teams are underperforming and they are mostly lossmaking. European football costs over $7bn a year to run, excluding players’ wages, and does not break even. It can benefit from fresh money.
Besides, disruption can lead to improvements that bring in new fans. England’s Premier League broke off from the rest of the game in 1991 and is now one of the world’s most successful tournaments. India’s Premier League, launched in 2008, drew millions to Indian cricket. Formula 1 has found a younger audience in the Netflix show, “Drive to Survive” and direct-to-consumer streaming. Who knows what will come from Apple’s $2.5bn investment in streaming mls, America’s soccer league; or Qatar’s backing of Padel, a rival to tennis, with 25m players.
The case for disruption, then, is clear. However, Saudi Arabia faces two other objections. The first is that it is a state actor that is not motivated by profits and has vast resources. Sport requires a competitive balance, so if an owner buys all the best players their team can in theory win all the time and the game suffers. This risk needs to be watched. However, despite decades of crazy money, no team has managed to dominate football. Saudi Arabia’s spending on players is worth only 6% of European football’s annual operating costs. Its rebel league shook up golf.
Big Fan
The second objection is Saudi Arabia’s rotten record on human rights (Bullshit & Hypocrisy. West has a worst records of human rights as compare to Saudi Arabia), including the murder of Jamal Khashoggi (He was a Washington’s Puppet and a traitor who spewed filth against Saudi Arabia), a journalist (He was a Yellow Journalist). Foes of the West like Russia (Not true and big fat lie. What a Hypocrisy?) face sanctions (Nothing happened to Russia. Still alive and very much thriving. Read UN report.), which include sport. Yet the kingdom is not in this category. America and Europe did $140bn of trade with Saudi Arabia in 2022, including in oil and weapons—both more strategically sensitive than putting. And although some club owners gain influence, controlling sports assets does not seem to blind the Western public or their governments. Even Roman Abramovich, an oligarch who bought Chelsea to court Britain’s elite, has not escaped sanctions. As Qatar found with gay and labour rights (Qatar is a sovereign country and they have their own laws and regulations. That’s why they didn’t give a fuck to the World’s hypocrites. They managed the World’s elite event very successfully. Critics needs an immediate Psychiatric evaluation, tons of pills and a long bed rest not to wake-up again.) in the 2022 World Cup, sponsorship can sometimes bring more scrutiny.
An ever-expanding list of activities are restricted around the world on grounds of national security, well-being or morality: think of semiconductors, social media, and energy and arms. Adding sport to the list is an own goal. ■

Player Profile - Dylan Crews
With the MLB Draft coming up on July 9th, let's take a look at potential #1 overall pick, Dylan Crews. Born in 2002 in Florida, Crews quickly showed off his potential. He played for the USA Baseball 14U team and their 18U team that won a gold medal. Crews attended Lake Mary High School, where he played Varsity Baseball for four years and was considered a top MLB Prospect at the time. However, he withdrew his name from the draft after high school and announced his full commitment to play baseball at Louisiana State University. Crews immediately started at Right Field for LSU as a freshman in 2021. In his freshman season, Crews slugged at an astounding rate, batting .362 with 18 home runs, which set a record for the most home runs ever hit by an LSU freshman. In addition, he was named National Freshman of the Year by Perfect Game. After the 2021 season, Crews switched to Center Field and continued to play at a high level, earning Co-SEC Player of the Year in 2022 while hitting .349 with 22 home runs. In his final season with LSU in 2023, Crews led LSU to their 7th College World Series Title, batting .426 with 18 homers and winning the Golden Spikes Award given to the nation's best college baseball player. Crews is expected to make an immediate impact on the team that selects him, as he has exceptional speed, power, and hitting.
Crews has been described by many scouts as a five-tool player, which is very rare. A five-tool player excels at hitting for average, hitting for power, base running, throwing, and fielding. Crews’ main weakness is his high whiff percentage on changeups and sliders. However, Crews still had a very high average on both of those types of pitches.
Although he is likely the most talented player in the draft, Crews reportedly is not interested in being selected first overall to the Pirates. Crews and his agent are asking for a record-breaking $10 million signing bonus, which would surpass the $8.42 million bonus that was given to Spencer Torkelson in 2020. One potential reason why Crews and his agent might be asking for such a high bonus is to be rejected by the Pirates so that he can then be chosen by the Nationals. Joe Doyle of Future Star Series has stated that Crews "fancies the idea of playing in Washington” instead of Pittsburgh. Crews and his agent have “purportedly thrown gaudy signing bonus demands at the Pirates" to try and get Crews to be selected with the #2 overall pick to the Washington Nationals.

Chillwave turns 10 years old today. Chillwave is curiously well-known among indieheads as a term but also somewhat misunderstood, maligned, and neglected. In the wake of this anniversary I began writing about its origins, its run from 2009-2011 and its subsequent influence on indie electronic music and indie music overall since. Fully 14.8% of all World Series ads focused on giving back and corporate social responsibility. There were more advocacy and corporate social responsibility ads aired during the first four games of the World Series than any other type of ad outside of auto makers, according to data from Advertising Analytics, a strategy firm that specializes in political and issues advertising. The World Series attracted mostly defense, enterprise technology, and healthcare ads. While this was a departure from typical sports championships, in which consumer package goods and retail ads typically dominate, Axios noted World Series games in DC presented a juicy opportunity for brands to “reach Washington decision-makers in a casual environment. While many marquee advertisers sponsor events around Washington DC, there are few games that will have as high of an impact and as engaged of an audience as a World Series that includes a Washington team.” As the hyper-political environment in Washington becomes more contentious, companies are pressured to take a stand on more issues than they have in the past – and this is reflected in their marketing initiatives. Expect this trend to continue at least through the 2020 election cycle.
A college players' rights group has entered into a partnership with the NFL Players Association to explore how to maximize name, image, and likeness rights. A day before the NCAA announcement last week, the NFLPA and National College Players Association (NCPA) announced jointly that the partnership will "explore opportunities for" college athletes in merchandise, gaming, licensed products, and "how recent developments impact television broadcast revenues in pursuit of fairness." California's Fair Pay to Play Act granting college athletes in that state the ability to profit off their name, image, and likeness goes into effect in 2023. A similar bill has been proposed in Florida, but it would go into effect far sooner—July 1, 2020. A Pennsylvania bill is expected to be introduced soon. Were college players able to unionize in a similar fashion to the way NFL players are able to collectively bargain, it would put even more pressure on the NCAA to craft new rules that give student athletes the same rights that all their classmates on campus currently enjoy.
Premier League Primary Stars USA visits Austin elementary school for soccer-themed learning. On October 25, Austin, Texas elementary school students worked side-by-side with Premier League stars during a soccer-themed educational experience. Premier League, the top level of the English soccer league system and EVERFI, a leader in driving social change through technology and education, recently joined forces to bring an interactive soccer-themed education program to students at Perez Elementary School in Austin. The event was part of the Premier League Primary Stars USA program, an educational initiative focused on health and wellness and social and emotional learning skills. Representatives from the Premier League and associated pro soccer clubs led a digital learning session, a hands-on soccer skills clinic, and a school-wide assembly centered on areas of critical emotional development. Perez students also engaged with visiting soccer stars, met mascots from four Premier League clubs, and saw the iconic Premier League trophy. On hand for the event were Premier League star winger and ambassador Shaun Wright-Phillips, EVERFI Global CMO Brian Cooley, Congressman Lloyd Doggett, and youth coaches from clubs including Aston Villa, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Wolverhampton.
Kansas City, here we come. Our “Power of Sports” program heads to Kansas City this month, highlighting community outreach programs, culturally significant sites, and people who have made a difference through sports. This month, host Rick Horrow visits the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum to speak with President Bob Kendrick about the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Negro Leagues coming up next year and the museum’s role in the celebration and in the community. He also checks in on two of the Kansas City Royals’ youth outreach programs: Royalty Fields grants and a recurring Special Olympics clinic, and hears from James McGinnis, a high school football player from the KC Metro, who suffered a traumatic brain injury and used the Chiefs’ success last season to motivate his recovery. Our Game Changer segment features an interview with former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue filmed in early October at a Sport Business Handbook contributor symposium hosted by EVERFI at their Washington, DC headquarters
The Orlando Magic have "filed an updated master plan" for their downtown Orlando Sports + Entertainment District that is "expected to more than double" the original $200 million project budget. According to the Orlando Sentinel, the mixed-use district will be built "starting next year on 8.4 acres across from Amway Center." Magic Chief Communications Officer Joel Glass said the project will now cost "well over" $500 million. The district will "contain nearly 110,000 square feet of retail space, a conference center hotel with 80,000 square feet of event space, offices, apartments and a 2,500-space parking garage." The updated plan maintains the original concept from 2018 but "increases the number of hotel rooms by 50 and more than doubles the amount of office space from the original 200,000 square feet to 420,000 square feet." District Director Pat Gallagher said that the office tower "would now rise to 18 stories, which includes the ground-floor retail, multilevel parking structure and commercial office space." The Sentinel notes the Magic's new headquarters "would occupy 40,000 square feet in the office tower,” or close to 10%.
Unsung World Series winner this year: Palm Beach County, FL. The most publicized “first” this year involves the visiting team winning every World Series game. However, maybe one of the most important economic “firsts” is the first time the World Series finalists shared a Spring Training facility: the FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches. The 7,700-seat stadium also features six practice fields each for the Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros. The 160-acre site also includes a 1.8 mile public walk trail and other facilities. The Palm Beach County Sports Commission touts the facility as a major economic generator for the county, as it also hosts over 1,400 youth and tournament baseball games each year. Look for a series of major announcements by the county and sports commission over the next two months.
San Diego State is now offering the city of San Diego $87.7 million for Mission Valley stadium site. San Diego State University is "now offering to pay" the city $19.5 million more than before to purchase the Mission Valley stadium property formerly occupied by the Chargers. According to the letter delivered last Monday to San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, SDSU's new offer is $87.7 million, which consists of a "revised purchase price" of $86.2 million for 135 acres of land, plus an estimated $1.5 million to "account for a portion of the site's appreciation" since 2017. In addition, SDSU is "proposing to take over the portion" of Murphy Canyon Creek immediately adjacent to the site "without requiring the city to pay for any past-due maintenance,” according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. The news comes as SDSU cracked the Associated Press college football Top 25 for the first time in many years (they are now #24), an achievement that should aid local enthusiasm for the SDSU West project, as a new football/soccer stadium is part of the master plan.
Parisian soccer club PSG goes green with Gaussin transport deal. According to SportsPro, French soccer giant Paris Saint-Germain has signed a strategic partnership with the Gaussin Group for the supply of self-driving, 100% electric vehicles for public transport and goods transport. The long-term agreement includes equipment for all of the Ligue 1 champions’ infrastructure, including their new training complex which will open its doors in 2022. The deal also falls in line with PSG’s ambition to utilize innovations in sustainable development and autonomous mobility, especially with regard to the practice facility as it bids to become the first recognized Smart City in sports. The Gaussin Group will initially undertake research to understand where to best deploy its autonomous and electric mobility solutions before rolling out its products where it best suits the needs of the club. This deal marks a movement for sports franchises to be more environmentally conscious of their off-field impacts.
Philadelphia 76ers’ Tobias Harris donates $1 million to charities. According to 247 Sports, Harris announced a combined donation of $1 million to assist nine different charities in Philadelphia. He announced the charities and the dollar amount for each during a community draft at a local elementary school. The benefitting organizations include the Center for Black Educator Development which received $300,000; Read by 4th was given $200,000; The Fund for the School District of Philadelphia, the Foundation for Orange County Public Schools, and Legends Academy were all given $100,000; World Literacy Foundation and True Love Missions each received $75,000; and both WUFSD Wynadanch Memorial High School and Team Up Philly were given $25,000. Although Harris was traded just eight months ago from the Los Angeles Clippers, the basketball star seems to be investing heavily in the youth of Philadelphia, a city facing a major teacher shortage and in which two-thirds of third graders can’t read at grade level.
Call of Duty League launches in January, 2020. According to BusinessWire, Activision Blizzard Esports announced the inaugural season of the Call of Duty League will begin with the Call of Duty League Launch Weekend at the Minneapolis Armory January 24-26, 2020. The event will be hosted by Minnesota Røkkr, which is the Call of Duty League team operated by WISE Ventures Esports, under the ownership of the Minnesota Viking owner Wilf family and tech investor Gary Vaynerchuk. The league will feature all 12 of the professional Call of Duty League teams competing across three days, and the opening weekend will feature additional fan and player experiences to celebrate the launch of Activision Blizzard Esports’ highly anticipated new city-based league. In a concept that should appeal to traditional sports fans, the Call of Duty League follows a home-vs-away format with 5-versus-5 professional match play. Throughout the season, each team will host “Home Series” weekends in their market, with multiple pro teams competing at each which will draw in crowds to take part in the events and participate in one of the most far-reaching video game series ever created.
