Life Recap
Born in '89 in the Bay Area. Family moved to Vegas before I started 1st grade. This is where I met some of my childhood friends, who I still hangout to this day. I didn't graduate high school because I skipped gov't class too much. Why? To be with friends, duh. This affected my life entirely.
After high school where I did not graduated, I got recruited to join the Marines. I wasn't patriotic by any means, they just promised I would get a high school diploma and a job. Otherwise I would be a waste of a human being. The military wasn't half bad, it felt like a microcosm of the real world. Went to Afghanistan during the war. Almost died of a blood clot.
Once I did my 4 years, I continued what I was doing after high school. Which is to say, nothing. I was less shy, but I had no guidance in life. So I just stayed with my parents with no job or car. For nearly 7 years! During that time I questioned about my self-worth. We lived in a 2 bedroom apartment. My room was the living room and I felt like I was a burden to my family. I was always embarrassed every Saturday when my friend from elementary would hangout.
I don't remember what changed in my brain that I needed to grow up. But I had a job where I had to take a bus everywhere. It paid like shit, but at least it was a job. We traveled to different stores and do inventory for them. I was able to travel via road to denver and got to see a friend from the Marine Corps there. I enjoyed the company of old folks there. Got to drink with guy name Greg. I left that job because I was gonna be forced to drive the company van. That means I had to drive to places like Kingman, AZ or St George, UT in the middle of the night while others get to nap in the van.
I took several months off from working and tried to learn a trade from a trade school. Don't do this. Google it or ask for tradesman if they need help. It was ok until Covid hit. After a few months of "learning" I got a job as data entry. Met this cute young guy, but ultimately not my type. We had a co-worker who was neurotic and paranoid. We were cool until the last few months before we were being let go. The dude really thought me and our gay co-worker were hanging out without him. We were talking about Microcenter renovations and I said I would like to go there again. He just assumed me and our work friend went without him even though I went there before I started the job.
Enough about that job. I was able to get another job at a warehouse for keys. That was probably my favorite job so far. It had a nice mix of people. Like I'm kinda left leaning but they all seem cool people regardless of their political affiliation. Hung out with guy name Dakota from chicago. Played pinball and drank. There was girl there named Liz and I had a hard crush on her. Sadly she left the job quickly due to family issues. There was another girl named Hailey, I found her hot and fun to tease. She didn't find me attractive, but I still wanted to be her friend because she liked anime.
I miss that place. The pay sucked though. It doesn't help that I had to keep driving from North Las Vegas to South Premium during morning and rush hour traffic. Just 2 years ago I finally got a place away from my parents. I was sorta forced to leave, but I was gonna leave anyway just a few months later.
I rented a room that had 3 other occupants. 2 others plus me had to share a bathroom. It was 550 a month! I just had to suck it up. At least it was closer to the warehouse. I remember the window would shake because of the wind. And the wall was thin. Plus my friends wouldn't hang out here. Usually my place is the go to spot since I'm always in the middle.
5 months prior to me moving I discovered XG and I'll talk about them on a different post. For 2 years of minimum pay (12/hr) I decided to look for a new job. I landed my current one which is at a casino. Ironic because I swore to never work at a casino, but I was desperate. I moved out of that shared housing and moved into my single bedroom apt earlier this year.
I have more to say about certain events, but I just wanted to type this out while it is still in my head. I'll probably clean this up and make it more congestible. If this is still like this, then I'm sorry future me.

Chicago Fire Season 5 Ep. 22 "My Miracle"
In the Season 5 finale, a warehouse fire puts the team at risk; Dawson's dad overstays his welcome; Casey fights for his first responders bill; Mouch makes a major life decision; and Herrmann goes to tremendous lengths to make a young boy smile.
If you want to watch the series for yourself, stop reading! This post contains spoilers to the storyline.
Alderman Mark Blakeslee says Alderman Matt Casey wants to give tax dollars to his friends in the CFD. He plans to stop Casey. Matt Casey says he's not a typical politician, but a firefighter for the CFD. People aren't impressed and say they need funding for schools, not for his friends. He tries to calm the crowd, but they won't let him speak.
He goe shome to his fathre-in-law, Ramon Dawson, and asks him to watch TV with him, but he says he's tired. Ramon teases him, saying it would be great if he could buy skim milk instead of 2%. Matt goes to bed and asks Gabby how long her father will stay. Gabby isn't sure. She welcomes him to life with the Dawsons.
Mouch asks Joe Cruz if he can speak with him. It's clear Cruz hasn't forgiven him for the 60-day suspension. Lt. Kelly Severide watches the awkward exchange. The alarm sounds. The crews are called out to a vehicle accident.
As Otis drives the rig to the scene, he asks Casey if it's normal to leave the south side of the bridge up. Matt tells Otis to put out the fire while Herrmann climbs onto the van to comfort the boy inside. Herrmann climbs into the van, but his crew runs out of extinguishers as the flames spread and the other crew is 5 minutes out. Mouch sets up the ladder and Matt tells Herrmann they have to move. He apologizes to the boy and yanks him up to safety. Gabby and Sylvie attend to their young patient, Hogan, who is upset that all his cards are inside the burning van. Herrmann learns they were autographed Cubs cards.
Backt at the firehouse, Mouch talks to Cruz in the coat room. Mouch says he tried his best and is sorry, but Cruz says he trusted him and now knows he's out of touch. He has to tell his brother he can't go to college next semester. He tells Mouch he tried, but he can't make the call. Mouch is speechless.
Herrmann asks Gabby how the boy is from the accident. She says he has a bad fracture and may need surgery. Matt asks for a date. Gabby says he needs his daughter, but Matt says he needs tough love. They disagree, and Gabby storms off.
Matt shares his problems with Severide, who laughs at him. Matt asks Severide to ask his wife how long her dad is staying. Matt changes the subject to ask about Cruz. Severide thinks Matt is out of touch, but Matt is trying to do the right thing. He just needs time off. Alarms sound for the ambulance. Matt says they should do this more often because life is short. Severide agrees and Matt apologizes for making him think about Anna.
Gabby and Sylvie arrive at the call and learn the police were called because the tenant is whipping someone. Gabby kicks in the door. They find their patient whipping himself with a cat of nine tails. CPD rush in after he shoves Sylvie. Gabby and Sylvie restrain the man and give him a sedative. They tape him up and prepare to transfer him.
Tamara Jones meets with Matt. Blake wants the gold coast beach renovation funds. He's making it look like a firefighter wants a first responder bill. Matt says Mark Blakeslee is presenting next week, but Matt hasn't had a chance to present to the full council. Tamara tells Matt to give Blakeslee what he wants so Matt can get what he wants. He tells Tamara to tell him how it goes at the next town hall.
Chief Wallace Boden tells Severide that if they don't keep an extra man on Squad 3's roster, having Jason Kannell makes it complicated. Boden leaves it up to Severide to choose who goes into the floater pool. Severide agrees that the best man gets the job. He sees some of the squad looking at the table but notices Cruz alone outside. Severide asks Cruz if he's okay. Cruz says he's okay, but Severide thinks he's not. Cruz says he's there and looks away. Severide thanks him and walks away as Cruz calls his brother, Leon.
Mouch learns he can have the job Nick told him about, selling gas detectors. He is told the complany plans to expand to clothing and boots. Mouch nods. He says it's a great opportunity and gives him until the end of the week to decide. Nick leaves as Mouch listens to everyone laughing in the other room.
Herrmann visits Hogan at Chicago med. He has a Cubs cap. They sit together, laughing about the Cubs winning the World Series. Herrmann promises to get him the cards he lost in the car fire, but Hogan suddenly has a seizure and stops breathing. It seems he had a bad reaction to some of his medication.
Cindy follows the noise to her basement and sees Herrmann has made a mess. He learns his baseball cards are gone because he sold them in 2002. He says "Utah", but you can see he's determined. The next day, Herrmann goes to Wrigley Field and tries to bribe the security guard with cookies his wife made.
Meanwhile, Ramon keeps drinking beer. Sylvie says they should name a bar stool after him.
Cruz is drinking shots at another table. Severide says he should slow down, but Cruz says he doesn't have to pay since Mouch will. Severide tells him to calm down or leave. Cruz yells at Severide, "Loud and clear, Lieutenant," and leaves. Herrmann looks annoyed and concerned.
Oliver meets Matt, who says he's doing this for the city and not for himself. Matt says he'll help Oliver as long as he can help his people. He'll support Matt at the town hall tomorrow. They shake hands and agree to help each other. Then a drunk Ramon comes to their table saying Gabby and Matt have told him about Oliver and his double dealing. Matt tries to stop him, but Ramon says Matt thought he was disgusting. Oliver tells Alderman Casey to keep his bill and leaves Molly's. Ramon tells him to leave. Matt is angry at Gabby. He says he'll find another place to sleep.
After the bar closes, Herrmann asks Mouch what he thinks. Moch talks about Scott Bell, a great firefighter who died in the Superior fire. Herrmann says only three of the 30 in his class are still working. The rest have retired or died. Herrmann says he shouldn't let Cruz get to him. Mouch says it's about him, not Cruz. He feels old and asks what he's doing. Herrmann says he's doing what he was born to do. Sgt. Trudy Platt comes to see what her husband is doing. Mouch and Trudy sit. He says it's time. She smiles and nods. Mouch looks at photos in his locker and sighs.
Gabby says Matt is selfish for not coming home. He says he texted her, saying he was sleeping at Severide's. She closes the office door and says this isn't how marriage works. They talk, and Matt says she isn't listening. He's angry that his bill will probably die today thanks to her father. Herrmann interrupts, asking if they can go for a ride. Matt tells Herrmann to do what he has to do.
Sylvie finds Gabby upset in the bathroom. She says Ramon is staying at their house and Matt left without coming home. Gabby says her dad has been mean, but it's hard to see him fall apart in front of her. Sylvie says she needs to tell Matt right away.
Hogan is released from the hospital and his friends greet him with the fire truck. Herrmann says he wants to give him a ride on the firetruck. His parents say it's okay. When asked where they're going, Herrmann says they're finishing what he started and tells Otis to go.
Oliver is trash talking Alderman Casey at town hall when Matt shows up in his fireman gear. He says the bill has nothing to do with being a fireman, but with being a human being. He says first responders should know the city has their backs in case of an emergency. He admits some men and women who answer the call don't come home. He likes being a firefighter, but his job has gotten in the way of being an alderman and a husband. That isn't okay for the best city in America. He says he's stepping down as Alderman and nominates Tamara Jones as his replacement. He urges them to vote for her because she'll be heard. He tells her to speak to the crowd, and she does. The crowd claps and cheers.
Herrmann takes Hogan to Wrigley Field, where he meets Kris Bryant. Bryant signs Hogan's cast. He meets Arrieta and Tirico. Hogan asks Herrmann to sign his cast. They learn of a fire and race off.
All crews arrive. Mouch tells Herrmann this is his last shift because he is retiring. Boden says they have four minutes in the building. Matt looks at Gabby before rushing inside. Severide and his team go the other way. They rush through the burning building to get people out. There's an explosion, and Boden orders everyone to leave. Herrmann yells for Mouch to get out, but he collapses. Herrmann yells "Mayday" and thinks Mouch is having a heart attack. Herrmann starts CPR, and Boden tells Cruz to stop. Cruz wants to go back in to help Matt with a patient. There is another explosion, trapping them. Boden learns Severide can't help them. Sylvie tells Gabby to stay focused.
Herrmann says they're trapped by fire after the last explosion. Cruz says they can get them out. He tells Capp and Tony to get a hose line and runs towards the building with Cruz until a fireball stops them. Cruz screams "No!" as Boden holds him back. Boden tells Herrmann to leave Mouch and orders Matt to evacuate. Severide and his team try to break through the brick wall as Cruz says he has to leave. Herrmann can't talk, and Cruz cries, saying he's sorry and he can't die. The building is on fire. Gabby watches in horror. Herrmann shouts "NO" as he looks at Mouch. Matt watches the wall bubble and says there's no exit. Matt asks Gabby to speak with him. He removes his mask and says she means a lot to him. He says he wants to hear her voice. She tells him to put his mask on and leave. He says she's the best thing that's ever happened to him. She begs him not to say it, but he wants her to remember them happy. He says she's his miracle as she cries. He loves her as the fire surrounds him.

Excerpt from this Chicago Tribune story:
The Chicago Plan Commission approved Thursday a plan to renovate a vacant warehouse building in the Armour Square neighborhood on the South Side into dozens of solar-powered apartments. Developer A.J. Patton said the project will show how renewable energy can help transform old structures, cut residents’ utility bills and fight climate change.
Known as Solar Lofts, when complete the renovated building at 2556 S. Federal St. will have 47 apartments and include electric vehicle charging stations, rooftop solar panels, energy-efficient appliances, and other sustainability features more typically found in high-end new construction, but frequently left out of adaptive reuse projects, according to Patton, CEO of 548 Capital, which purchased the building in February for $3.8 million.
“People look at adaptive reuse projects and feel handcuffed when it comes to sustainability, so we may be missing opportunities,” he said. “But with Solar Lofts we will go well above and beyond what’s called for by the city’s building code and set the standard for adaptive reuse projects.”
Karen Weigert, director of the Baumhart Center for Social Enterprise & Responsibility at Loyola University and Chicago’s former chief sustainability officer, said the city needs more such projects.
The site at 2556 S. Federal St. began life as a printing plant for Rapid Roller Co., and in the 1960s was used by the Nation of Islam to publish its newspaper Muhammad Speaks. In addition to the new apartments, Patton plans to add a floor, as well as a rooftop terrace and amenities such as a dog run out back, all designed by Gregory Williams, president of Gregory Ramon Design Studio.
“There is no more sustainable, greener development than the reuse of existing assets,” said commission member and Commissioner of the Department of Planning and Development Maurice Cox. “It’s been a pleasure to watch this project evolve.”
Solar Lofts will include 32 affordable units, 28 funded by about $5.2 million from developer Sterling Bay, Patton added. The money helped satisfy Sterling Bay’s requirement under Chicago’s Affordable Requirements Ordinance to provide affordable housing in exchange for securing approval to build the 30-story, 282-unit apartment tower it’s now developing at 160 N. Morgan St. in Fulton Market.

Parent Trap, Ch. 2
NicoMaki, Love Live, 3.4K, 2/3
Nico and Maki and Dia: The First Date
Dia had mostly slept through date prep. Maki had her in the car seat in the walk-in closet while Maki went through an amount of outfit and coat choices she was very glad Dia was not old enough to count or comment on. Nico arrived on exactly on time, wearing a very sportif short coat and leggings, her hat and scarf hand knitted. The SUV wasn’t new, but was well kept up.
“Hi Dia.” Nico leaned over the carseat, waving, as Maki locked the door, “I’m Yazawa Nico, here to take you and your mom to one of my favorite places. Nico baked those cookies your mom told you about.”
Dia had woken up, her eyes bright and interested. She was making cooing noises at Nico.
Nico raised both hands to her temples, “Nico Nico Ni.”
Dia giggled.
“Don’t worry, Nico will have you Nico Ni’ing in no time.”
No baby talk. Points for that. Maki buckled Dia into the backseat and slid into the front. Nico pulled out, her handling of the car as smooth as Maki remembered. She relaxed.
“So, what’s Dia’s favorite Disney movie? My siblings used to love them and Cocoa says her students still talk about all of them, not just the new ones?”
What an odd question, Maki thought. Dia’s favorite Disney movies seemed to be Maki’s. “Lilo and Stitch, Mulan, Cinderella. Why?”
Nico chuckled, “Interesting mix. My little brother loved Lilo and Stitch. He was never very verbal.”
“Dia is. She says Mama and Lunch and We go now and a bunch of words.”
Nico nodded, “So smart like her…” Nico paused, “Mama.”
Maki was probably blushing, but Nico was staring at the road.
“What’s your favorite Disney movie?”
“Well, Nico likes them all, but Frozen’s the best. Sisters are important. None of this evil step sibling stuff.”
As an only child, and the mother of a probable only child, Maki had nothing to say. Plus, Cinderella had evil step siblings in it and was an awesome movie.
“Radio?” Maki asked, eager to fill the silence. “Doesn’t have to be jazz.”
“Nah.” Nico put her hand over Maki’s, briefly, holding it until Maki pulled back, “Nico has a different plan.”
And then Nico started to sing, “Stuck On You,” then swung into the “Devil In Disguise” with a much deeper voice than expected and a very Elvis like flair. Maki checked over her shoulder, Dia seemed very calm, listening, and then when Nico broke into Stitch like growly, gaggy noises, Dia started to laugh.
“Sing with me,” Nico urged.
“What?”
“You ain't nothing but a hound dog Crying all the time”
Nico kept pushing, “C’mon, you can do it. Dia, don’t you want your Mama to sing?”
Maki was surprised at Dia’s immediate response, “Mama...sing”
Two votes against Maki’s undecided.
“All right.” Maki inhaled, “Start again.”
“You got it, cutie,” Nico winked, and rolled out her Elvis voice again.
“You ain't nothing but a hound dog Crying all the time You ain't nothing but a hound dog Crying all the time Well, you ain't never caught a rabbit And you ain't no friend of mine”
Maki glanced at Nico, bouncing a little in her seat, grin huge as she delivered a note perfect take on an Elvis Presley classic. So far this was the silliest date Maki had ever been on.
###
And now it was breathtaking. Maggie Daley Park in the center of the city. A Skating Ribbon, which Maki might have heard about when it opened, but had never been to. She hadn’t been on skates in years. Dia was spinning, wide eyed, fascinated by the contrast between the snow coating the pine trees, the climbing walls that looked like modern art, and the Chicago skyline.
“It’s gorgeous at night.” Nico had come back with skates for all of them.
“I can imagine.”
“Here, if you sit and hold Dia, I’ll help you get into your skates after you put hers on.”
Dia was being surprisingly compliant, spending most of her time watching Nico, who would notice and grin and do the Nico Ni gesture which would have Dia giggling. Maki shook her head at the silly. The skates were a little big, but Maki was planning to keep a good grip on Dia. Nico had a sleek pink slingpack that she promised was full of perfect foods for hot chocolate after skating.
Nico knelt and slid the skate onto Maki’s foot, winking up at Maki, “There you go, Makirella, just like the fairytale.”
Maki felt her stomach flip. This was ridiculous. How could someone slipping your wool socked foot into a skate trigger nerves?
“I don’t see a pumpkin carriage.”
“Oops,” Nico giggled as she laced up Maki’s skates, “Had to chop that up for muffins.”
“And the horses?”
“Happily chomping through leftover oats from cookies.” Nico stood and stomped around, tossing her head and making a neighing noise until Maki started laughing, then she offered her hand and helped Maki stand. Dia took a hesitant step forward.
Maki knelt down to hug her child, “Are you ready for this, bun?”
Dia pointed to the ice trail, where a couple of people drifted by holding hands, “We go.”
Maki nodded at Nico, “We go.”
“You betcha.” Nico stepped to the ice, zipped off, did a pretty spin, arms out, and then zipped back.
“I haven’t skated in years.” Maki muttered nervously.
“Dia, you want to hold Nico’s hand while your Mama gets her wheels back?”
Nico held out a hand. Having just seen Nico zip around with the confidence of an Olympic hockey winger, Maki didn’t object when Dia took a hesitant slide forward.
“And it’s as easy as that.” Nico announced, then offered her other hand to Maki, “Next?”
Maki shook off the hand, pushing off the railing. She remembered the gliding sensation and the joy of the chill against your face as the motion warmed you up and now there was also the full glory of Chicago, posing on a late February afternoon, sun warm as it glinted off architectural wonders.
###
Why yes, hot chocolate at the rink with cookies dipped in it had been excellent after a half an hour of skating, but now they were in Nico’s office, just five minutes from the rink. It was stunning, a renovated warehouse. Walking into the main space with dark floors and an efficient layout of desks, there was a glass wall and double doors that led to Nico’s office. Two shots of Nico’s first album cover were blown up and framed inside the office, clear glass allowing them to dominate the view from the first step into the office.
“Follow Nico.” Nico zipped down the hall into a small room with a huge window and a divan seat attached to the wall with angled rods. A clothing rack took up two walls. Nico took off her coat and tossed it on an armchair, “Nico’s going to make a quick lunch.” She pressed a button and blinds closed off the room. “Nico thought it might be fun to have an afternoon pajama party brunch so I got a bunch of outfits that I think will fit the two of you and you can pick your favorites.”
Dia was fascinated by the blinds that had come down over the window and toddled over to poke her fingers through.
“Good sense of curiosity.” Nico smiled. Maki nodded, arms wrapped around her chest, watching Dia try to bend the wooden blind slats.
“Too much?” Nico asked.
Maki shrugged.
Nico flopped back on the divan, pulling up her legs and propping her chin on her knees, looking contrite. “I was really just worried we’d all be too cold and wet. And this would be more fun than driving you back home.”
Maki decided to take a look at some of the clothes and pulled off a white hoodie with rabbit ears. She turned to Nico, “Really?”
“That’s for Nico. But you have good taste.” Nico winked. Dia had gotten bored with the blinds and wandered to the divan. She had her arms on it and futilely attempted to get her legs up. Nico reached over and easily pulled her up. Dia immediately sat next to Nico, ramrod straight, staring at Maki.
“Mama dress.” Dia waved at the clothes.
Nico leaned over to whisper, “Your mama’s clothes are very sharp.”
Dia showed Nico both hands.
“Is Dia trying to tell me you already tried on a bunch of outfits before our date?”
“No.” Maki blushed.
###
Maki had been talked into pajama pants with hearts scattered all over them and fuzzy red slippers, but she kept her gray turtleneck, Dia had chosen a navy blue romper with white piping, very sleep over with the Queen’s great grandchildren. Nico had opted for the rabbit hoodie and pink pajama pants with white spots. To wait while she cooked, Nico had led Maki and Dia to a large room with a couple of large sofas, another divan seat bolted to the wall, pillows scattered, and a large screen on the far wall.
“This is where we debut music videos.” Nico announced on her return. Maki and Dia had been flipping through an international fashion magazine.
“Is this your label’s office?”
“This is Nico’s office, no label.”
Maki was impressed.
“Nico’s been working since middle school on building this.” Nico swept her arms dramatically after she put a tray carefully on a low table. “Nico Ni is her own label now, with a K-pop influenced group we’re currently promoting.” Maki inhaled, everything smelled amazing, soup and gooey grilled cheese sandwiches. Dia reached forward for one as Nico put sandwiches next to soup bowls, but Nico managed to block the gesture “These are hot, Dia. Let Nico split it in half for you.” And Nico, after a look to check with Maki, handed Dia half of a half sandwich.
“Cookie.” Dia frowned as she examined the melty cheese.
“Cookies later.” Maki said, sliding forward to pull a bowl of soup near, ready to dip a whole half a sandwich in it.
“Listen to your Mama.”
And Dia settled. It was nice to have someone to support her, Maki thought, another adult voice in the room, not that Dia was terribly fussy. But Dia was stubborn. Nico seemed to be having a soothing effect...no, that wasn’t the right word, Maki thought. But Dia was watching every thing Nico did, even mimicking some of her gestures.
“So what are we watching.” Nico picked up the remote.
“Stitch.” Dia growled.
“Sounds good, if your Mama doesn’t mind.”
“S’okay.” Maki muttered as she finished another half sandwich dripping with tomato soup.
###
“You don’t just seem to be enjoying Lilo and Stitch in parent mode.” Nico teased, bumping Maki on the cushion they were sharing in front of the couch Dia was sleeping on.
“Parent mode?”
“Doing things because your kid likes them.”
“That’s dumb.” Maki twirled a curl of hair, glancing back over her shoulder at the sleeping Dia, “Dia would be able to tell if I didn’t like something so it would be a waste of time.”
Maki’s nose was too close to Nico and too perfect, but at least it distracted Nico from Maki’s lips. Nico wasn’t sure what the protocol was on first kisses with one year olds present.
“Do you want your daughter to only like the things you do?”
“No. But why not share things with her that I do like?” Now it was Maki’s eyes that had caught Nico, with their honest challenge.
“So you watched Lilo and Stitch before you were a Mom™️”
“Mom™️.” Maki snorted and shoved back at Nico with her shoulder, “You make it sound like I opened a box, added myself and some water, and became some kind of alien machine.”
Nico frantically pinballed through thoughts. Had she gone too far, was Maki annoyed, should she have gone in for the kiss, oh no, she was going to start talking now and Maki was giving off this prickly energy, but Nico had never been good at not talking through stress, “Nico didn’t mean that in a bad way, you seem super competent, and probably have so much good doctor info, Eli and Nozomi just…”
Maki sighed, “It was a lot more complicated.”
Maki changed the subject. “I wonder if Dia’s going to think I’m silly for talking to her all the time, once she’s older.”
“I’m sure she loves the sound of your voice. It’s lovely.” Nico noticed the blush.
“All the parenting books say just talking to your child helps build their verbal skills. And paying attention to their gestures.” Maki stretched her hand out, staring at her fingers. “I get that.” She dropped her hand over Nico’s. “My parents are always...concerned about developmental stages.”
“They’re really involved grandparents, huh, At least you have some support.”
Maki wasn’t looking at Nico anymore, but her hand was squeezing Nico’s, “They want to make sure the next generation of Nishikinos continues the family’s tradition of excellence.”
Nico glanced back at the sleeping child, “She’s continuing the family tradition of cute in pajamas.”
Maki smiled. “Sometimes I feel like the narrator in an documentary on single parenting.”
“Not a sitcom? Rin seems like a sitcom BFF.”
Maki shook her head, and dropped her voice, “Nope. Serious doctor voice.”
“So what would serious doctor voice be saying now?”
Maki frowned, her nose crinkling in what Nico realized was the most adorable way ever, “ Doctor Nishikino continued to hope that her date would remember an early promise of a milkshake for dessert.” Maki sighed, turning to Nico, eyelashes fluttering in luxurious slow motion over luminous pools of mischief. “I want to dip things in it.”
Nico didn’t register that she needed to stop staring and start speaking until Maki quirked a perfectly arched eyebrow, waiting for a reaction. Nico grabbed a recent word. “Things?”
“Cookies, brownies, strawberries, french fries.”
Nico bounced to her feet, “I’m going to break out the Air Fryer, ice cream and a blender faster than you can say “Nico Nico Ni.”
Maki leaned back, her arms stretched out along the couch, and started, “Nico Ni…”
Nico swivelled and faster than Maki could blink, pecked an interrupting kiss on Maki’s lips, skipping off with a wink over her shoulder, “Just stay put, Princess.”
Maki, hand raised to tingling lips, nodded, “Okay.”
###
Nico was cleaning up and Maki was watching Dia pull herself along the sofa when she heard Nico call out, “Bring Dia, Maki.”
Maki scooped up her daughter, heading to where Nico had stopped in front of the window. Snow had started, flakes drifting against a bold winter blue.
“Snow.” Dia pointed.
“Pretty.” Maki said.
They stood, watching as the fluffy, sparkling flakes began to fall faster. Nico had sneaked an arm around Maki’s waist and smiled when Maki had leaned in instead of pulling away. Maki lost track of the minutes, enjoying the Dia’s fascination with car windows being covered by white. As clouds scrunched together, gray and darkening, Nico got practical.
“I’d better get you both home or you’ll get snowed in.”
Dia looked at Maki, who smiled, “It’ll be fine, bun.”
“Snow.” Dia pressed a hand against the window.
“It won’t be like the cars, Dia. Snow won’t stick on here. It’s not sloped, like car windshields. It’s flat.” Nico demonstrated, one hand the window, one hand the car. Dia patted the car hand.
Maki sighed, “I wouldn’t mind being snowed in. This is a great space..”
“Maybe when Nico gets back, we can try a dinner date. Nico will cook. You can check out the architecture in my apartment. It's a different kind of great, cozier.”
“Cookies. Cookies.” Dia decided.
“Nico always has cookies.”
“Now cookies.”
“Maki?”
“We can take some for the drive.” Maki smiled at Nico, “When are you leaving?”
“Tomorrow. Tonight, I pack. And do a magazine interview. And whatever else Cocoro set up since I demanded half a day off.”
“I’m glad you did. We had fun. Right Dia?” Maki put Dia down.
Dia nodded seriously.
“Let’s find your coat.”
Dia toddled away from the window. Maki didn’t immediately follow, but reached for Nico’s arm, “Text me when you’re done for the night. I’d…” Maki blushed, “love to talk about a dinner date.”
Nico practically bounced halfway to the ceiling as she kissed Maki’s cheek. But then they both rushed after Dia, who’d taken a turn into a room with breakable things.
###
“Try to take a tiger from his daddy's side That's how love is going to keep us tied Uh-uh-uh Oh yeah, uh, uh I'm gonna stick like glue Stick, because I'm Stuck on you”
Maki had to restrain a giggle. By the final verse of Nico’s over the top Elvis rendition of “Stuck on You” Dia had fallen asleep and Maki didn’t want to disturb her. So she left her favorite seat and moved the conversation to her bedroom, sprawling out along the bed while she let Nico keep singing in her ear. After Nico finished with “Burning Love,” Maki interrupted.
“Stuck on You” is not the lullaby I imagined my daughter would love.”
“She fell asleep. Good.” Nico chuckled. “Did Maki get a bonus song?”
“You were so deep in Stitch mode, I didn’t want to interrupt.”
“Elvis mode. Heartthrob mode. Girls screaming mode. Can’t give enough autographs mode…”
Maki was ready for a new topic. “Sounds exhausting.”
“Um no, it’s exciting. Nico on top of the world. It’s such a rush, connecting with an audience, feeling them get riled up, dancing, singing...I love it.”
Maki could hear the thrill in Nico’s voice. She felt suddenly tired.
“You’re probably leaving early tomorrow. I won’t keep you up.”
“I like talking past my bedtime with you.” A honest warmth in Nico’s tone softened Maki.
“I’m glad. Maybe we can talk again soon.”
“Yeah, it’s too bad my concerts are in Philly and Brooklyn. Nico would love to give you a backstage tour.”
“I’d love it too.”
“Well, call Nico, if you’re in town.”
Hmmmm...could that actually be possible? Her parents were always willing to watch Dia.
Distracted by the thought, Maki’s tone was perfunctory. “Good night, Nico.”
“Oh.” Nico sounded disappointed, “Good night. Maki. Dream about Nico.
“Sure.” Maki cut the call, trying to remember where Nico had said she’d be in a couple of days. Philly? Maki had never really spent any time in Philadelphia. Maybe it was time for some historical sightseeing. She could tell Dia all about the First Continental Congress and the Liberty Bell when she got back.
###
Nico stared at the phone. Maki had gotten distant at the backstage tour suggestion. DId Maki not want to see Nico in concert? Obviously, it wasn’t an objection to Nico’s voice, sneaky Maki had gotten Nico to sing an extra song. Maybe it was too early to suggest travel? Maybe Maki thought Nico had groupies? The fan-Idol relationship was a chaste thing; Nico was there to bring joy, comfort, and smiles to her audience. What brought joy to Nico offstage was private. Maybe she should tell Maki that? Nico picked up her phone and hesitated. Maybe Maki had just been tired? Nico knew single momming made for long days. Nico decided a good night selfie would be the perfect nightcap for the tired, gorgeous doctor Nico wanted to dream of her.
###
A text from Nico. A snap. Nico in a camisole and pink flannel pajama pants, wrapped up in a fluffy pink and white blanket. Maki smiled. Today had been one of her favorite days. No time inside a hospital, skating and flirting with a charming beauty, someone to help with Dia, and Nico had been practical help, not feeling sorry for Maki or fussing too extravagantly over Dia, just there with a quick hand and a smile. It had seemed so natural. And Maki found herself wanting more time with Nico, alone time with Nico, a quiet dinner at Nico’s apartment, no Disney movie blaring in the background, to hear how Nico had pursued her dream, designed her office, what Nico listened to while travelling, what Nico’s favorite movies were, taste Nico’s favorite snack...
Maki typed a quick message.
M: You owe me a midnight snack.
N: ?!?!?!?!
M: For this.
And before she talked herself out of it, Maki snapped a selfie of herself blowing a kiss, unaware that her zip up hoodie had slid down her left arm, leaving her shoulder bare. Instant response.
N: Do that anywhere near Nico and you can have any kind of snack you want.
M: : )
Then Maki took a look at the snap she’d sent and blushed, falling on the bed, silent screaming into her pillow.

How To Hide A Body In Illinois
An excerpt from the newly released novel, “The Lyrebird Threat” by J. L. Thurston
Her body was crumpled in post-mortem yoga. Folded like a greeting card. Her ass stuck straight up in the air and her face was smashed into the white plush carpet.
She was a fresh corpse, still warm and scented with flowery perfume. Doing the downward dog next to the dining room table in the Attorney General of Illinois’ home.
The dead woman was in her mid-sixties but appeared older by the way she dressed and by the gray bun at the top of her head. She had been in excellent health up until the poisoning.
There were no signs of trauma. No blood, no gore to soil the cleanliness of the barely-used home.
Standing over the body was a woman who looked exactly like the Attorney General, Magda Loughty. But she wasn’t. This was a woman of many faces and many voices. A true master of disguise.
She was the Mimic.
Born with a voice that could make any sound, imitate anyone, and with the right connections to special effects makeup artists, the Mimic had everything she needed to overthrow the country’s biggest and darkest secret.
Eagle.
Her heels clicked on the wood floors on her way to the garage. She refused to break character, even when no one was around. The Mimic wore her face like a mask, maintaining Loughty’s trademark mild disappointment. She had studied her for years. She could perfectly mimic the way Loughty made sure most people avoided speaking to her unless they had to. The way she intimidated all those who had the misfortune to meet her.
If Loughty wasn’t tearing someone’s confidence down, she wasn’t awake.
Inside the three-door garage was the victim’s SUV. Beneath the backseat was a tightly folded black tarp and roll of duct tape, both of which the Mimic removed and carried inside to the body.
She moved as quickly as she could, not caring for the noise she made. Speed outweighed stealth.
The body was heavy despite its slender habitus. It flopped and sagged as the Mimic pushed and rolled it onto the tarp.
Sweat began to form on her brow. It would take buckets of sweat to get the facial prosthetics to come unglued, but she worried about her makeup. Too much sweat and she’d begin to look partially melted.
The body was finally tucked into the tarp, rolled and folded. The duct tape made obscenely loud noises as she ripped off strip after strip.
The Mimic was racing against the clock. Her breathing was ragged, her heart thumping high in her throat. She hadn’t felt this exhilarated in years. She reveled in the quaking sensation in her knees. It was all finally happening.
The Mimic dragged the body through the hall to the garage, where she let it roll roughly down the three cement steps to the cold gray floor. She opened the tailgate to the SUV. The body flopped only slightly in the tight tarp roll-up while the Mimic loaded it in and piled on a blanket. Panting, sweating, she threw herself into the driver’s seat and allowed herself time to reapply powder and crank the air conditioning.
According to the dashboard clock, she had just enough time to dump the body, change disguises, and make it to morning coffee at work before being noticeably late.
While she made her way out of Chicago, her mind replayed the old woman’s death. Her graying face choking on the poison, eyes bulging as her heart and lungs failed her. The imagery would be disturbing if it wasn’t so liberating. Nothing that happened in Loughty’s dining room that morning was undeserved.
The long drive took her passed the suburbs where only farmland and woodland could be seen in all directions. She knew of a perfect little pond deep in a heavily wooded area. It was the final resting place for a few Eagle agents. There was room for one more.
The Mimic parked the SUV on the side of the road near a thin deer trail. She kicked off Loughty’s high heels and laced on some hiking boots. She hoisted the tarped body around her shoulders and stomped off into the woods.
Yellow light filtered through a heavy ceiling of green. White tufts of cottonwood pollen drifted whimsically all around. The humidity was high that day. It caused sweat to sting her eyes and soak her back.
She had to rest often. The facial prosthetics began to slide out of place and wilt, but she did not concern herself with them now that she was out of the city. She was careful not to lose anything, however, as she would have to become Loughty again for another murder. Or a suicide, depending on how one looked at it.
The pond seemingly materialized out of the trees. A forgotten water hole surrounded by a ring of mud and rocks, the water was a dark brown speckled with floating blobs of algae.
Panting, muscles aching, the Mimic chose six large rocks to weigh the tarp down. Once they were secured by duct tape, she dragged the body into the water and began to swim out to the center. The weight of the tarp pulled her under and she struggled to swim to the center of the pond with it.
When the effort was too much, she released her package and scrambled to the surface, gasping and choking on the murk. She had swallowed some of the fishy water and nausea was trying to cramp her gut. She paddled to shore and lay in the mud, staring up at the blue morning sky until she caught her breath.
The ticking clock forced her to press on. Once she reached the SUV, she stripped off her ruined business suit and stuffed them under a bush. Underneath the passenger seat in the SUV was a shirt and sweat pants. She still reeked of fish water, but at least she was in dry clothes.
Smiling placidly to herself, she drove back into the city. To Lyrebird Headquarters.
In the puzzling, tightly-packed buildings that filled Chicago, it was easy to overlook the abandoned places. Factories, warehouses, hotels, apartment buildings. All shut down and boarded up. Left to decay until someone with money tears it down for another parking garage, or mall, or restaurant. The Lyrebirds had many options for their headquarters when they moved to Chicago.
The Mimic pulled into a small underground parking lot. Water pooled on the severely cracked pavement where she parked. The brick building that loomed overhead was once a giant in Chicago, but now was overshadowed by skyscrapers four times its size.
It had originally been a thread factory, then its upper levels were used as apartments, then it was abandoned and condemned and used mostly as a crack house until the Lyrebirds moved in.
She parked the SUV and dodged dark and dirty puddles on her way to the door.
Feeling time wasting away, she hurried through the building that had been her home for the past year. The first two levels were uninhabitable. Old, rusted factory equipment made homes for spiders and rats. A metal staircase took her to the third floor where the building had been renovated in the 1960’s for apartments.
Due to the work of her Lyrebirds, they had a clean living space, some creature comforts, and- most importantly- running water in the four bathrooms. A generator provided electricity, but sparingly.
She showered in the bathroom at the end of the hall, closest to her room. The water was ice cold, but it rejuvenated her. At that point, being clean was all that mattered to her.
The long hallway had peeling wallpaper and faded carpet. The Mimic toweled off, naked as she moved from the bathroom to the dressing room down the hall. She passed no one. Her Lyrebirds were busy, finishing the last steps editing the film. She hoped to be able to look it over tonight, or perhaps tomorrow.
She passed by bedrooms, a locked office, and a conference room. The bedroom doors were open, exposing the cots, sleeping bags, and other belongings that filled the living spaces. It looked like a refuge in a zombie apocalypse flick.
The last room on the right was the dressing room. It was the place where she underwent her transformations, almost as if by magic. Toby Bennett was a special effects makeup artist who was a genius of the highest caliber in his field.
She found him lounging in a chair by the window, reading. He did not blink at her naked form. Her body was not a secret to him. She was a canvas on which his art came to life. At the makeup table, her new set of prosthetics and palettes awaited. Her new identity awaited.
As the hour passed, Toby worked up a sweat while he transformed the Mimic into a completely different person. She ran information over in her head as though memorizing a script. All the people she’d impersonated had been a challenge, but this was the ultimate test. Any mistake would be blaringly obvious. She had to focus, to alter her mind so that it ran parallel with her latest victim’s.
This new disguise would be her ticket to the final moves in her revenge scheme. She was so close to her checkmate and Eagle was still completely unaware of her existence. But that was about to change. She had plenty of mind games in store for Loughty. That bitch would know the Mimic was closing in on her, and she would be helpless in stopping her.
But, best of all, the world would know about Eagle when it was all said and done. The world would hate Eagle, and Eagle would be no more. Soon.
Now a different person, but still pressed by time, the Mimic drove her SUV back to the Attorney General’s house for a quick errand. She had a delivery to make. A wooden lyrebird, ornate and handcrafted in Australia, found a new home at the front door, facing the sidewalk.
The bird gave her comfort, gave her purpose. But to the Attorney General, the bird would send a message of fear. She will know pain is coming.

Storm clouds lingered over Washington, D.C. Rain poured down by the bucket full. “Dammit,” Emily cursed under her breath as she picked up a soggy box off of apartment steps. “Stick it in the leasing office. It isn’t that hard to do.” Shaking out her umbrella she closes it before stepping into her apartment building just as her phone began to ring. “Whoever you are can wait.” She says running up the steps to her floor. Unlocking her apartment door she kicks it open and sets the soggy box on the floor by the door alongside her umbrella. Tossing her purse and keys onto the dining table, she heads to her bedroom as she calls back the recent number.
“Hey, glad you called back.” She heard a voice on the other end.
“Well if it isn’t Sam Cooper.” Emily says earning a chuckle from Sam. “Now how did I get so lucky to receive a late night call from you?”
“Well it really isn’t late on this side of the country.”
“This is true.” Emily says as she kicks off her boots. “But seriously, Coop. What’s up?”
“I have a case for you.”
“You’re still with the Bureau after all these years.”
“You’d be surprised.” He says laughing. “I have a new team out here. I’m actually training a new agent and the Director wants to send her your way.”
“I don’t have a position for her.”
“Trust me, she’s worth it. I’ve had her for only three weeks and she’s shown so much potential. She’s fast, smart, strong. Her profiling skills are impeccable and she makes a great Liaison. I know you need one there.”
“So do you need us on a case? Or are you trying to sell me your agent?”
“Hopefully both,” Sam laughs. “So what do you say?”
“Send me what you got. I’ll see what I can do about the case but I’m not making any promises about the agent.”
“Fair enough. I only need three days.” Sam says before hanging up.
_____________________________
Walking up to the warehouse, the team could hear loud voices from inside carrying over the music blaring from a nineties boombox. “Alright!” Sam shouts clapping his hands together. “Nice! Keep it going Charlie!”
“Aw come on Coop!” Charlie groans as she leans forward on her knees; her blonde ponytail draping over her shoulder. “I need a break!”
“Give me fifty more punches and then you can go rest!” Sam says chuckling. “You can do it!”
The team walks into the renovated gym of the warehouse. “Well I see not everyone’s moved on.” Mick says as he approaches Emily.
“Careful Brit,” JJ says walking over. “Chief is taken.”
“Chief? Taken? I don’t believe any of it.”
“Well believe it,” Rossi says as he and Mick shake hands. “And no, you have no competition but he’s got you beat by a landslide.”
Emily scoffs rolling her eyes. “They make a big deal out of all the boyfriends I’ve had.”
“She’s had two..” Spencer chimes in.
“Coop! I’m done!” Charlie calls as she lays down on the floor. “No more!”
Sam chuckles as he walks over to Charlie and hovering over her. “You did great.”
“Well I feel horrible.” Charlie says as he pulls her off the floor. “Go grab some water and take a rest in the breakroom.”
“So is that the agent you were telling me about?” Emily says as she approaches Sam once Charlie had walked away.
“Yes actually. Charlotte Ingles,” Sam starts to tell her. “Twenty-five, she’s from Chicago but very down to earth, just don’t piss her off.”
Emily laughs shaking her head before Sam calls for everyone to gather around. Charlie came out of the break room chugging down more water as she wiped her face. Mick nudged her side making her laugh. “I am so tired.” She says making him chuckle.
“It’s the most I’ve ever seen a woman do.” He says.
“Charlie.” Sam calls.
“Yes?”
“I want you to take Agent Jareau and Rossi to the latest crime scene. But first, please shower and dress in clean clothes.”
“I’ll be out in ten minutes.” Charlie says as she rushes off the back rooms to the showers.
“In the meantime, you all just relax for a bit. Sitting on a jet for six hours might sound luxurious but I know the cons.” Sam says.
____
“Rawson!” Charlie yells from the shower room. “I’m going to kill you!”
“What’d you do now?” Emily says looking over at Mick as he writes on the chalkboard.
“Just gave her a new hair color.” He says smirking.
“Now is not the time to start with the pranks.” Sam says crossing his arms over his chest.
Charlie walks out of the room fully dressed in work appropriate clothes and a towel wrapped around her dried hair. “I refuse to go out like this.” She says looking at Sam.
“How bad can it be?” Luke questions.
“Let’s just say I’d be the first agent in the history of the bureau to have pink hair!” Charlie said removing the towel. “Highlights are one thing but not my whole head!” She says chucking the towel at Mick. “You such a child!”
“Like I said,” Sam whispers to Emily. “Don’t piss her off.”
Emily snickers. “That’s a first. I’ve gotten used to Derek and Spencer’s pranks but this is a whole other level.”
“I can fix it after the case,” Lillian says as she tosses Charlie her bag, badge, and gun. “Blonde hair is easy.”
Lillian was a tall hispanic woman, late thirties. Originally from Spain but came to New York when she was three. She’s like Charlie you don’t want to piss her off. She was one of the new recruits right after Gina and Jonathan had been transferred to another team. Mick stayed with Sam as they brought on Lillian and Charlie.
________
Pulling up the latest crime scene, JJ and Rossi climbed out of the SUV while Charlie tied her back in a braid. “Nice...hair..” The lead officer said as he walked up to Charlie. “Mick?”
“Sadly…” Charlie sighs. “So what do we got here?”
“Same as the other victims,” The officer starts to explain to the three agents. “A single gunshot to the head.
“So it looks like our unsub had to have had help bringing our victim here,” JJ says as she observes the surrounding area. “According to the ID on our victim, their weight was two-hundred and twenty pounds. Not easy to carry unless they’re a bodybuilder.”
“There aren’t any drag marks so he had to have help.” Rossi adds.
“So we could be looking for a partnership,” Charlie says. “Although we have three guesses and ⅓ of chance of getting right,” She sighs crosses her arms over her chest. “We have a lot of work to do.”
“I’ll make sure the ME does a thorough check over the body for any other DNA.”
Charlie’s phone buzzed. A text message from Sam. ‘Our victim, Cathy Rhodes, was reported missing nine months ago by her mother.’
“Cathy’s mother reported her missing nine months ago.” Charlie says looking up from her phone.
“We should probably head back to the others and figure out the rest of the game plan.” Rossi says.
____________
Sam walks over to Charlie as she pours creamer into her coffee. “Would you like some coffee with that creamer?”
Charlie laughs shaking her head. “Well if you didn’t buy such bitter coffee, I wouldn’t need so much.” She retorts.
“So you remember when I explained the Director’s intentions of sending you to Quantico, right?”
“Considering you told me this morning? No, I haven’t. Why? Did he come to his senses and wants to keep me here?”
Sam chuckles. “Sadly, no. I want Emily to take you on her team. You’d be a great asset.”
“This isn’t the military, Sam. I can’t just pick up my life and move like it’s nothing,” Charlie says as takes a sip of her coffee. “I have a life here. I’ve had life here since my mom gave birth to me. The only time I left was to go to Georgetown and then the Academy for two years.”
“I know, I know. It isn’t easy but I think this could good for me which is why I want to make a good impression with Emily.”
“Which means you want me to do what?” She says raising her eyebrows.
“I want to talk to Cathy’s mother.”
“I can’t…” Charlie says shaking her head.
“Please?”
“No, Sam, and you know why I can’t..” Charlie says walking away from him.
He follows after her, careful not spill his coffee. “Charlie, I want Emily to know that you can be vulnerable but efficient.”
“I understand that, Sam,” Charlie says turning to face him. “But I can’t….”
Sam pulls her into the break room again before closing the door. “I know it’s only been three months since your mother died but this could really help you, especially since it’s apart of your training.” Charlie tears her eyes away from Sam as she starts to get choked up.
“Why can’t you have Lillian talk to her? O-Or Mick? JJ, even. That used to be her job.”
A knock comes on the door and JJ peeks her head in. “Cathy’s mother is here.” She says before closing the door. Sam rests his hand on Charlie’s shoulder. Charlie sighs before nodding her head.
“I’ll bring her in.” Sam says as he exits the break room.
Charlie sat down at the table as she swirled her index finger around the ring of the mug. The door opened again and in walked Sam as he held the door open for Cathy’s mother. “Mrs. Rhodes, I’d like you to meet Agent Ingles.”
“I hear you found my baby.” Mrs. Rhodes says as she approaches Charlie. Charlie stands up from the table and pulls out a chair for Cathy’s mother.
“I think you’d better sit down, Mrs. Rhodes.” Charlie says. “Would you like something to drink?”
“No, no. I’m okay.” Mrs. Rhodes says as she sits down at the table. “How is my Cathy? Is she okay? Can I see her?”
“Mrs. Rhodes,” Charlie began to speak. She could already feel her hands start to sweat as she tried to find the words to tell Cathy’s mother that her baby wasn’t where she thought she was. “We did find Cathy.. But Mrs. Rhodes, Cathy was murdered.” She watched Mrs. Rhodes as her mouth slightly opened in shock, her eyes watering over with tears. She starts to shake her head in disbelief.
“No, I don’t believe you.”
“Mrs. Rhodes, I know this is hard to comprehend.. I’ve been where you are losing a loved one. I’ve been in your shoes.”
“You don’t understand, Agent Ingles. You don’t have kids.”
“I don’t, Mrs. Rhodes but I still lost someone very close to me.”
Mrs. Rhodes keeps her eyes trained on her lap. “Who?” She asks looking up at Charlie.
Charlie took in a deep breath. She wasn’t expecting to be asked who exactly she lost. “My mother…” Charlie took in a deep breath. “She was murdered...a few months ago….”
“Oh… I’m sorry to hear that..” Mrs. Rhodes says.
Charlie shakes her head. “No, no. It’s okay. Right now we’re focusing on this case right now.”
“Can you tell me what happened to my baby?”
“Mrs. Rhodes, I don’t think that’s a good idea-”
“Please, I want to know.”
Charlie sighs as she wraps her hand around the coffee mug. Taking in a deep breath, she starts to explain to Mrs. Rhodes what’s happened to her daughter. Her phone started to ring. “Excuse me…” She says before leaving the room and answering the phone call. “Agent Ingles.”
“Agent Ingles, this is the ME. So I have come connections between our three victims.”
_____
“They all gave birth?” Sam questions as he looks over at Emily.
“They were already pregnant when they went missing.” Charlie explains. “According to the ME, each victim has showed visible signs of pregnancy. They gave birth right before they were killed.”
“So what are you thinking?” Emily asks.
“Well according to the files that Garcia pulled up on our victims, they were all drug addicts.” Charlie says. “So maybe our unsubs were taking them just for the babies, give them a safe home. Although I don’t understand the murder part but...people think differently.”
“So we have three missing newborns,” Sam says. “Three murdered women, and two unsubs on the loose.”
“Charlie, I want you to head to the ME with Mick and see what all else they’ve found from our victims.” Emily says.
“Mick? Of all people?” Charlie groans.
“I’ll talk to him before you leave,” Sam says. “We don’t need any more of you turning pink.” He says winking at her.
“Ha, funny. I will get him back.”
“I don’t doubt that you will.” Sam says patting Charlie’s shoulder before leaving the room.
Emily walked up to Charlie and extended her hand. “We were never introduced,” She says giving her a warm smile. “I’m Emily.”
“I know,” Charlie says shaking her hand returning the smile. “I’m usually more professional than..this.” She says gesturing to her pink hair making Emily laugh. “I respect Mick but sometimes he acts like the annoying older brother.”
“Or in my case, the annoying little brother.” Emily responds. “Just try to play nice when you head to the ME.”
_________________
“You know what to do?” A woman says as she hands the keys off to an older gentleman.
“Find them, run them down. They can’t focus on two injured agents and two unsubs at the same time, now can they?” He says shooting the woman a smirk.
_________________
The drive to the ME was pretty quiet. Charlie kept to herself, not wanting to talk to Mick after his little prank and Mick stayed silent not wanting to piss of Charlie anymore than he had already did. Mick’s phone buzzed in the cup holder and he reached for it.
“Put it away.” Charlie says keeping her focus on the trees as they passed by.
“Sam texted.”
“You can reply when we get to the ME’s office.”
“Oh it’ll only take a few seconds.”
Charlie turned her head and began to reach for Mick’s phone when she saw a car coming in their direction on their side of the road. “Mick! Watch out!” She shouts. Mick drops his phone and sharply turns the wheel and slamming his foot on the brakes. “Oh my god…” Charlie gasps. The car starts heading towards the cliff. “No no no! Mick! Mick!”
_______________
“Have they gotten to the ME?” Emily asks as she joins the rest of the team in the main room.
“No, I haven’t been getting any answers on either of their cellphones.” JJ responds as she hangs up her phone.
“I just got off the phone with the ME. They haven’t shown up yet.” Luke says hanging up his phone as well.
“Garcia, can you track them down?” Sam asks.
“Already on it.” Garcia says as she starts typing away.
_______________
Gasping for air, Charlie tries sitting up in the passenger seat. The seatbelt was stuck and not budging an inch. Stretching her arm out to the glove box in front of her, she hooked her index finger under the latch and pulled it up. She grabbed Mick’s pocket knife and starts to cut the seatbelt. Once she had freed herself, she kicked open the car door with strength she had left. To their luck, the car landed upright at the bottom of the cliff. She stumbled around to the front of the SUV and over to Mick’s car. Pulling open the door she cut him free from the seat belt and pulled him out of the car. “What happened?” He asks resting against the SUV.
“Another car drifted into our lane, I guess.. They drove us off the cliff…” Charlie explains. “I don’t think we can make it back up there to hail down someone.”
“I can.” Mick says.
A twig snapped behind Charlie. Turning on her heels she tries to see what made that noise.
“I think if I can get up there, I can hail down a car.” Mick say pulling back Charlie’s attention. As Mick went to examine the cliff, a hand covers Charlie’s mouth and dragging her away. “This rock can give us a boost up the cliff.” Mick says as he turns to face Charlie only to find her not there. “Charlie?” He calls. Looking inside the SUV he found it empty. “Charlie?” He calls out again and looking around the area. “Shit..” Running back to the cliff, he starts making his way up to the top. Once he reaches the road he hails down a truck driver and flashing his badge. The brakes screech as the truck comes to a stop.
“Sir, are you okay?” The driver said as he climbed out of the truck.
“FBI.” Mick says. “There’s been an accident…”
______________
“I need to get out of here..” Mick says as he tries climbing off the bed.
“Oh no you don’t.” Emily says pushing him back on the bed.
“No, I need to find Charlie.” He says.
“And I said no.” Emily says. “Don’t make me handcuff you to the bed.”
“Is that all you’d do?” He says shooting her a smirk. She hits him with a pillow before leaving the room and closing the door behind her.
“Any word from Garcia?” She says approaching both teams in the waiting room.
“No,” Sam says shaking his head. “We’re still at square one. We have no idea who our unsubs are so therefore we have no idea where they took Charlie.”
JJ’s phone starts to ring. “Yeah, Spence.”
“Hey, I think we have a lead,” Spencer says bending down to the ground and examining drag marks. “How soon can you get here?”
_______
Emily, JJ, Spencer, and Matt follow the drag marks to freeway. “This still doesn’t get us off of square one.”
Rossi turns around upon hearing a footsteps dragging back down into the woods. “Guys, I think I hear something.” He says slowly advancing back down towards the trees. He pulled his gun and started following in the direction that he heard the dragging sounds. Suddenly he sees pink hair emerge from between the trees. “It’s Charlie!” He shouts running towards her. “Hey hey hey,” He says catching her before she hit the floor. “I got you.”
“Edward...Sacramento...Peter...1...7...8...9.”
“We need to get her to the hospital.” Emily says as she pulls out her phone.
“No, I’m fine.” Charlie says. “Just out of breath… I saw the license plate of the car when he was dragging towards to it. I managed to get free and ran... “
“Where is he?” JJ asks.
“Long gone. I was hoping Garcia can track down the owner of the car, get an address.” Charlie stands up straight. “Now.. I don’t know about any of you but I’d like some water.”
_________
“You’re a trooper,” Mick says as Charlie walks into the room. “I knew you’d be good.”
Charlie laughs shaking her head. “No you didn't. You were going to fight Emily to come find me.” She sits on the bed.
“So you’re not going to go with the others to find the unsubs?”
“Yeah, I just wanted to check up on you first.”
A knock comes on the door and Sam pokes his head inside the room. “Garcia’s got an address.”
“Sad I can’t watch you kick it in the field.” Mick says.
“I’ll fill you in.” Charlie says as she gets off the bed and leaves the room.
_________
As the agents pulled up outside of Lonnie Dane’s two story home. Half of the group went around back while the other half stayed inside. “On my go.” Sam calls through the ear wigs. He reaches up his hand and knocks on the door. “Lonnie Danes?” No answer. “Lonnie Danes, FBI.” Still receiving no answer Sam looks at Luke and nods his head. Kicking open the door both groups head inside the house and checking each room.
Charlie made her way to the kitchen where Matt and JJ were standing. “Every room’s clear.” Sam calls.
“He just had to have left before we got here,” Spencer says as he walks into the kitchen. “Television’s still on in the living room.
“He was cooking before he went out.” JJ says walking over to the stove.
Sam walks into the kitchen with Emily. “I’m going to take my team back to the warehouse and continue going through his files.”
“The rest of you going with them.” Emily says. “Charlie and Matt, I want to keep you two here in case he comes back.” She adds before going back out to the living room with Matt.
Charlie nods her head as she holsters her gun and turns off the stove. “We’ve got a car approaching.” Matt calls from the living room. “Plates match.”
Charlie pulls out her gun again as the back door opens, but before she had a chance to speak he was already pulling the trigger. Charlie ducks behind the counter grabbing the still hot pan with her. She couldn’t hear his footsteps. Slowly standing up she can feels him behind her. Spinning around she slaps the pan across his face knocking him to the ground.
“Are you okay?” Matt says as he comes over to Charlie.
“Yeah, yeah. I’m good.” She says looking down at Lonnie. A red mark appearing on his face.
“Well you use what you got.” Emily says as she hands Lonnie’s hands together.
“Sam’s been training to use reachable objects for defense before using bullets.” Charlie explains as she twists the pan around in her hand.
“Now I figured what the teams been missing,” Emily chuckles. “You did great on a whim.”
Charlie shrugs her shoulders. “I wonder how good I could be with a frying pan instead of gun.”
Emily laughs as she wraps her arm around Charlie’s shoulders. “Let’s not find out.” She says as the two of them walk out of the house.

Charlie wrung her hair out in the sink after washing out the last of the blonde hair dye residue when the apartment buzzer rang out by the door. Groaning she quickly grabs a towel and wraps it out around her hair before running down the stairs to the buzzer. “Yeah..”
“Hey, it’s Emily. Charlie?”
“Hey! I’ll buzz you in!” Charlie says as she presses the white button before going to the kitchen sink to finish washing the last bit of the hair dye out of her hair. She hears the door opening and turns the water off.
“Going back to blonde?” She hears Emily says with a chuckle.
Charlie grabs the towel again and wraps her hair back up. “Does the pink hair qualify as a midlife crisis?”
Emily laughs. “I don’t think it does. At least not at your age.”
Charlie leans on the counter. “So what brings you by? I thought your team already left last night?”
“Oh yeah, they did. I stayed behind.”
“And why?” Charlie says narrowing her eyes at Emily. “Why would you stay behind?”
“I wanted to talk to you.”
“Okay, one liners aren’t really helping me right now.” Charlie says.
“Did Sam ever talk to you about the Director’s current motives?”
Charlie nods her head. “Yeah, Sam’s been making me bust my ass for three weeks now ever since the Director called him.”
“So you know he’s been trying to convince me to take you on my team.” Charlie nods her head. “And how do you feel about that? Coming to work in Quantico?”
“It’s a big change, that’s for sure,” Charlie says as she pulls the towel off of her head. “I’ve lived in this city for twenty years and then I lived in Quantico for two before I was recruited and placed back out here in my hometown, been back here ever since.” Charlie tosses the towel towards the staircase. “I was just about to make dinner, want to stay? Or do you have to catch a flight?”
“I don’t leave until tomorrow afternoon. I’d like to stay. What are you making?”
“Rossi actually wrote down one his recipes for me try. He told me he wrote it for just me but if I made it for more than one, than just to multiply the recipe by however many people would be eating it?”
“What recipe?”
“Uh, I had put it in the drawer when I got home.” Charlie said as she pulled open a drawer beside the sink. “Ah! Here it is!” She says handing the notecard over to Emily. “Wanna help me?”
“Oh god no,” Emily says shaking her head and handing the card back to Charlie. “I butchered that meal when I tried to make it for Andrew and myself.”
Charlie snickers. “Yeah, he told me about the phone call.”
“Hey, I had no other choice.”
Charlie giggles before going to gather the ingredients from the pantry.
___________
“Wait! So you knew Gideon?” Emily laughs. “How was he as a professor?”
“A little tough, I can say that. After taking his classes and finishing my training, I decided to take an office job out here for a some years before joining Coop’s team.” Charlie explains. “I was a pretty quiet student in his class, always have been my whole life. He didn’t like it because I rarely participated in mock cases.”
“Why not?”
“Because they weren’t mock cases. They were real,” Charlie shook her head. “We weren’t ready for that yet, he just threw us into them. We didn’t really have a choice to exclude ourselves, he said it’s what we would be seeing out in the field, and he’s right, don’t get me wrong. I’ve had my fair share, but not when we’re learning about it. He used to hold me after class and discuss the problem he was having with me.”
“Yeah, he was very opinionated.” Emily says as she takes a sip of her wine.
“Yeah..” Charlie agrees with a slight nod of her head. “He definitely was…” She cleared her throat after a few moments of silence and climbed off of the stool. She walks over to the sink and dropped her plate down inside as she leaned on the sink. “When I got the call about Gideon, I didn’t believe it.”
“It was hard for all of us to believe,” Emily says. “But it became real at the funeral.”
“There was a memorial service if anyone wanted to pay respects for him…. I didn’t go..”
“It wasn’t mandatory.” Emily says shrugging her shoulders.
“It wasn’t because of that. A few colleagues and I planned on flying back to D.C. to attend but I changed my mind.”
“Can I ask why?” Emily asks.
Charlie walks back over to the island and leans on the counter. “All I could think about was my father… He died when I graduated from the Academy. He was on his way from the ceremony to meet my mother and I in the capital for dinner. He had a stroke while he was driving and his car crashed into the metro’s barrier.”
“Oh gosh, I’m sorry to hear, Charlie.” Emily says. “Sam never told me that.”
“That’s because I told him not to tell anyone.”
“But why?”
“Because my father isn’t someone that I want to miss.”
“Charlie…” Emily says leaning on the counter. “He’s your father.”
“You never knew him, Emily. My father was a monster. A monster to me and my mother. The only time he wasn’t was when he’s around a crowd. For example, my graduation. If there’s a crowd, he’s perfectly fine. If it’s just us three, he’s a monster.”
“What did he do?”
“He used to be a drug dealer but he was also an alcoholic. Living in the house for eighteen years was hell. College my escape but even that wasn’t enough. Every night I was the one getting the backlash of his drunken self. I took on the pain so my mother didn’t have to. She didn’t deserve anything he ever did. He’d slap her on occasion but I got the worst of it.” Charlie eyes started to water, a single tear slipping down her cheek. “I lost count how many broken bones I had and how many scars I have. I’ve grown to hate alcohol despite how much wine I have in the pantry.” Charlie wipes her face with the back of her hand. “If I missed curfew by a minute, I’d be beaten so badly I could barely sleep. I’d be in so much pain.”
“Were child services ever contacted?”
“Once.. But my father threatened us to fake us being a happy family until they left the house.” Charlie looks down at the counter. “I wish I had stood up to him that day and told the truth. Everything would be so different.”
“Have you visited his grave since he passed?”
“I visited Gideon’s grave before I visited my own father’s. If that doesn’t say something, than I don’t know what does.” Charlie says as she turns around to the sink and washes off her plate.
“And your mother? How has she been?”
“The happiest I’ve ever since her since my father passed. She’s been traveling a lot. With the money she got from my father’s passing, she paid off the house and used whatever was left to travel. Something’s she’s always dreamed of doing. She sends me postcards from every city she visits or letters if she can’t find postcards.” Charlie sets her plate and wine glass on the drying rack before turning to face Emily. “I vowed to give my children the life I never had… A normal childhood.”
Emily downed the last her wine. “So you’ve met the majority of the team..”
Charlie narrows her eyes at Emily. “I thought that was the whole team.”
Emily shakes her head. “We have an agent back in Quantico. She’s our Liaison.”
“I thought Sam said--”
Emily shakes her head. “Sam’s an old fart, Charlie. He always forgets about Lucy.”
“Lucy?”
“Lucinda De Luca.. Well she’s also known as Mrs. Reid.”
“Wait, Spencer’s married?”
“With three kids.”
“Holy shit.. Glad I decided not to flirt with him.” Charlie says making Emily laugh. “But De Luca. That sounds so familiar.”
“Well she should.” Emily says pulling out her phone and showing a picture of Lucy to Charlie. “She took the same classes as you under Gideon.”
“Ohhh! Now I know her! I remember she was this tiny, little thing in school.” Charlie giggles. “So she’s the Liaison now?”
Emily nods her head as she gets up from the bar stool and walks over to the sink. “She’s very good. Hard worker and a fast one too. She’s only one who is ever done before anyone else with the case files.”
“I’m surprised Spencer isn’t.” Charlie says as she takes the plate and wine glass from Emily.
“Lucy surpassed her husband months ago.” Emily chuckles as she leans sideways on the counter. “So what you say? Think you might join?”
“Give until this weekend and I’ll call you?”
Emily nods her head. “Fair enough. The Director isn’t pressuring anything.”
“So where are you staying tonight?” Charlie says.
“Where we always stay when we come into town.”
“Why don’t you come here? I can drive you to the airport tomorrow.”
“Are you sure? I don’t want to impose.”
“How would you be imposing if I’m offering?”
Emily smiles. “Then I’ll stay here. I just have to pick up my things from the hotel.”
“Great! On the way we can stop in Chinatown and pick up some food on our way back.” Charlie says. “Let me just go grab my coat and we can head out.”
If you enjoyed this part then please be sure to leave it some love, reblog it, and leave me your feedback!
Thank you! :)

Barbershops in Portland started to see a sharp drop off in enterprise as men turned to shaving at dwelling as an alternative making their regular trip to the barber.
The decline continued over the decades to come back.
