Hi Julia! Thanks for all you do 😊 I just graduated this past spring with a degree in biophysics, and I’m planning to go for a PhD in biology in a few years. Over the summer, I worked as a lab manager in the lab that I did my undergrad research in, and now I’m back home applying for positions for my gap years. Do you have any tips for finding positions? I haven’t submitted an application to any job yet but I’m starting to panic bc it seems like it’s harder to find a position than I thought. :
(continued from last ask, oops) Also I’m an anxious bean and the longer I take to find a position, the worse I feel about asking my undergrad PI for help, even though he’s super nice and supportive and I should ask him if he knows of any positions :(
Hello! And thank you!!! (i love your blog btw i got lost in it for like 5 min and slammed that follow button (i follow back via my main blog jncera))
I’m a fellow anxious bean too! The thought of having to search for jobs/post-docs soon makes me want to hide under a table for the rest of my life. But we can tackle this together my fellow bean!
So tips that have helped myself and others be successful in their job search include:
Create a comprehensive profile on LinkedIn and use their Job search function. Pretty much every single company (including many if not all academic labs in the US) post positions to LinkedIn nowadays. I would recommend finding positions you’re interested in, and then use the posting’s language to help build your own profile: as in, pay attention to what skills they list, and if you have experience in those, add them to your profile too! That way, when you apply to a job directly via LinkedIn, the resume that gets automatically generated and sent via your profile will include those exact skill-sets.
The job search section is also great to get regular notifications on open positions in a field and city you’re interested in. I would recommend diversifying your search terms too, so if you’re looking for a lab manager job, also get notifications for positions like “research specialist”, “research technician”, “laboratory technician”, “scientist”, etc.
Apply to lots and lots of positions! Even ones where you don’t match all the requirements; cuz you never know. And applying to jobs is sometimes a marathon. You may have to apply to a whole bunch of positions before you and an institution find the right fit.
Contact recruiters. This is also something that you can do via LinkedIn. They’re like real estate agents for jobs. Their job is to literally find applicants for open positions and most have fields they specialize in. A recruiter actually helped my lab mate find his post-doc position, and turns out the recruiter himself has a PhD in Bio so he knew who would be right for which fit. On LinkedIn, if you modify the “Career Interests” in the dashboard section of your profile so that you turn the “know recruiters you’re open”, you’ll probably be contacted by a few recruiters (I currently have mine off bc the number of emails I got per day was becoming a little too ridiculous–that’s how easy it is to get in contact with one).
Check out the websites of companies you’re interested in working for, and check out the Careers/Jobs/Hiring section of their website for open positions, and then apply!
Also check out local Temp Agencies. Many biotech companies are hiring lots of temp workers or contract workers now, and they go through local temp agencies. During my gap years I “joined” a temp agency (I went through an application and interview process) and they were in the process of helping me find positions in companies that needed temp workers when I landed a lab tech job (that I found via my own searching). But the few weeks I was with the agency were great; they worked really diligently to try to find something for me and I even interviewed for one position.
If you’re interested in working in academia (like a local university that does research), you can also try just cold-emailing PIs. Some may be able to create job openings just for you. My husband landed a lab tech job this way (where he met me lol) so it does work! Here’s a post about emailing PIs to see if they’re hiring. If they say they’re not hiring, you can follow-up with a thank you and ask them if they do know of any labs who may be interested instead, and whether they can pass along that PI’s contact info. Never hurts to ask!
Here’s a masterpost of job websites for scientists you can also check out. Hopefully the links still work; I haven’t checked some in a while.
And along with all this, you can check out other job posting websites like Craigslist and Monster. I found my lab tech job during my gap years before grad school from craigslist!
Regarding asking your PI for help or advice: Go for it! Your undergrad PI is, and forever will be, part of your network. And as someone who is part of your network, you are welcome to contact each other at any time, be it tomorrow or in 10 years. That is how connections in our networks work, and your PI won’t find it odd at all that you’re reaching out; they’ll probably be delighted. I just went to a career talk today about someone who met someone at AstraZeneca at a poster session during grad school, and then 7 years later contacted them because she was applying to that same company. (To her surprise), the person remembered her, and was then instrumental in getting her hired. So ya, once a network connection, always a network connection.
I hope this helps!! Feel free to contact me at any time if you have any other questions! I’m rooting for you, my fellow bean. Good luck!!!

amalgamated inc
you work in the bowels of an RnD company. you were regular people, despite working on concerning projects with dire ethical ramifications. this morning, though, there was an accident in one of the labs and SOMEONE accidentally released a project - a biological weapon, intended to be a living grey goo project. it was cleaned up without incident...officially. but in reality? you were infected.
"infected" is a dramatic word, though. okay, so you're sharing a body with a weird organism that has weird needs. but you're still yourself. you've had no obvious physical changes just looking at you, although if they look at your tissue under a microscope they might see some things. if the company finds out what happened, though, they'll almost certainly "quarantine" you for research purposes for the rest of your life, and dissect your corpse after.
all you have to do is make it through the day like a normal person and leave without arousing suspicion, and you'll be free to escape.
roll a d4 to find out your job: 1. laboratory scientist: you're close and personal in the labs, handling all the stuff. you don't talk to people as much but you have to focus on your work. 2. technician: you repair all the mechanical/electrical/computer stuff when they go wrong. you bounce around between different areas a lot. 3. administrative processor: one of the residents of the cubical farm. your work is relatively low-pressure but there's a lot of water-cooler socializing. 4. janitor: you clean up the messes all the other assholes make. people outside of your department don't talk to you a lot but you do have to deal with a lot of unfortunate biological material.
you have two stats: SUSPICION and EXCITEMENT. they both start at one.
your work day is four hours, then a lunch break in the group cafeteria, then another four hours. go about your workday, but whenever your character hasn't wrestled with a problem for more than 30 minutes roll a d4:
1. your supervisor's supervisor comes by to inspect your work, and you have to explain to them what you're doing while you do it. meanwhile, your organism increasingly wants you to take a nap. 2. a new employee accidentally spills something, breaks something or otherwise causes a mess, and they ask you to help them. they're panicking, even if they shouldn't. meanwhile, your organism is insistently hungry. 3. you're tapped to help with a job interview. your direct supervisor is there, as well as the potential hire, and you're tapped to answer questions about the work environment and get a sense of the interviewee as a cultural fit. your organism finds this very boring and wants to play, instead. 4. your supervisor pulls you into their office for a performance evaluation. they go over your past year and want to talk about ways your work can improve. meanwhile, your organism absolutely hates the vibe in the room and wants to leave.
if these seem concerning, feel free to invent problems for your character every 30 minutes or less so you don't have to roll. if other players are not in the scene with their characters, tap them to play npcs.
every time your organism wants to do something weird, you can either choose to do it or repress the urge. if you do it, lose one point of EXCITEMENT, but you may have to roll SUSPICION (see below). if you choose to repress the urge, roll a number of d8s equal to EXCITEMENT. if no dice show 8, you repress the urge, but gain one point of EXCITEMENT. if you get one 8, you have to do something weird to deal with the urge and you lose one point of EXCITEMENT. if you get more than one 8, you have to do something weird to deal with the urge but you don't lose any points of EXCITEMENT.
every time you do something odd in front of other people, roll a number of d8s equal to SUSPICION. if no dice show 8, nobody happened to notice, or they explained away what you did. if you get one 8, they're confused and not sure what happened, ask you if you're feeling well, etc. if you get more than one 8, they're definitely suspicious. you gain one point of SUSPICION and they'll engage with you more, asking you what's going on, or try to sneak a bodily sample of you for analysis.
if you manage to come up with a decent explanation for your behavior, deflect blame to someone else, or otherwise implicate them as infected, lose one point of SUSPICION.
if your SUSPICION reaches 10, someone alerts the higher-ups and you're taken in for analysis.

I have an opportunity for a position with my university as an animal technician. The job is basically managing the feeding, cleaning, and transport of lab rats and mice used in classes and research. I've wanted a job working with animals for the longest time but after finding out that part of the position includes cleaning the euthanasia chamber and "managing carcasses" I'm a little worried my bleeding heart will make me miserable there. Any advice or thoughts? Tyvm
Ooof, tough call there. First of all, my only experience with something like the job you’re describing is a laboratory animal course I took in school, which involved some shadowing at research facilities. The institutions we were at did make sure to treat all of the animals respectfully and provide them appropriate enrichment and care, the lines of animals they use are specifically bred to do just this and not as social pets, etc. I’m NOT here to discredit the unfortunate but necessary scientific advances gleaned through animal testing. Do I advocate against it whenever possible? Yes, but I can’t in good conscience enjoy the countless benefits of modern society and medicine that I do without acknowledging how we got here.Anyway I have a lot of complicated thoughts about that that I could talk about for hours, so THAT SAID. Euthanasia in the laboratory field is a lot different than euthanasia in the veterinary/pet field and while I can compartmentalize one just fine and have no trouble handling the body of an animal that was alive and interactive a few minutes ago, there’s no fucking way in hell I’d be able to do that in a laboratory setting. My bleeding heart can barely read peer-reviewed journals involving rodent testing because I project too much.Obviously some people are very well-suited to the laboratory field, though, and I’m certainly not saying that anyone who is a lab tech lacks empathy for the animals. I just know that I personally couldn’t swing it. So I guess, uh, assess how much you think it would truly bother you, and is this definitely the setting in which you want to work with animals? There are a ton of them out there, so no need to limit yourself if you think you’d be uncomfortable.

One overriding consideration will affect every aspect of your workbench selecting decision: What work will you be performing on it? The answer will affect everything from the size of the bench to the surface material, storage requirements and ergonomic considerations.
Once you determine what will be done on the bench, analyze the tasks associated with the work and make a checklist of features needed to perform them. For example, say you’re in the business of assembling and maintaining cell phones, and you need to furnish a workspace for your repair technicians. You want a small workbench, perhaps one that is height-adjustable to bring a detailed repair job up to an optimal work distance. Along with the workbench, you will need excellent lighting. You’ll likely also need bins above the work surface to provide direct access to small parts, and an articulating arm that can hold assembly guidelines or diagrams. Depending on the flow of your repair operations, you might want to consider a material-transfer work surface or even a conveyor workstation, both of which can cost-effectively expedite material handling.
Or maybe you’re working in a pharmaceutical lab, where the work surface material becomes a more important part of the decision. Depending on the liquids and solids you’re handling, you might want either a stainless steel or epoxy resin chemical-resistant work surface for durability. If your laboratory is in a clean room, your laboratory Workbench will need to meet certain health and safety standards. You might also need to store small beakers, instruments and large testing equipment-requiring a variety of storage spaces above and below the work surface.
Take advantage of the space
The size of your workbench is determined by a number of factors. First up is how much space is available in the work environment-how big a footprint will the bench occupy? Because today’s modular workbenches maximize the use of vertical space, you may not need as big a workbench as you think. Next, how much work surface does your application demand, both in terms of width (left to right) and depth (front to back). Does the entire work surface need to be within easy arm’s reach? Can you position items above the work surface on a vertical accessory system for easier access? Will you be working with large equipment or parts? If so, you may not only need a larger work surface but might also need to factor in the weight-bearing capacity of your workbench.
After thinking about size and footprint, you should consider whether your company’s workflow is best served by a group of workstations laid out in a particular configuration. Some companies offer modular workstations that accommodate different configurations, and thus different types of workflow. Use a design that positions your team for maximum efficiency.
The storage volume
Spend some time doing some careful planning to get a workstation that exactly addresses your storage needs with little or no wasted space. Simplify your storage decisions by reducing the items being stored to only those that directly address your workbench applications. When doing your planning exercise, consider the size, shape, weight, quantity and fragility of the items to be stored, as well as how accessible they need to be, and how much security they demand.
Light
The lighting needs for different tasks are an important consideration. Does each station need separate lighting? Does the room itself have lighting deficiencies? Does the light cast an unwanted colour? If you need an industrial workbench with light, are your technicians best-served by overhead fluorescent lighting or a swing arm that can be easily positioned or moved out of the way when not needed? Do you need an accessory that can diffuse the light and reduce glare?
After you weigh your lighting needs, consider your electrical requirements next. From cleanrooms to quality control departments to research and development, having a convenient source of power at each workbench with light can be essential. There are diverse options to consider-from power beams and air beams to air supply brackets and cable management accessories. You can narrow your selections down to the necessary few by asking the right questions.
The right accessories
Think about the impact that accessories might have on improving the work functions of the industrial workbench. No matter what the task, there’s an accessory to help get the job done more efficiently and conveniently. By taking advantage of the abundant vertical space above the work surface, and the many interchangeable accessories available, you can create a highly efficient work centre that is tailored completely to the jobs being performed in the workspace. Examples include shelving for manuals or instruments, parts bin rails, a monitor bracket or a keyboard holder.
Most companies have multiple departments, from manufacturing to testing to shipping. Consider using a common workbench platform throughout the facility to gain such benefits as better utilization of inventory, easier reconfiguration, interchangeability of accessories, and aesthetic appeal.

Pathology Lab or A Diagnostics Centre or Blood Test Center is synonymous to one another. It deals with the examination of samples of body tissues. People are in the lookout for accessible and budget-friendly laboratories to diagnose their treatment. Some of the medical tests performed in diagnostic centre are as follows:- Bio-Chemist– Laboratory analysis of body fluids such as urine, stool etc.Radiology – Medical tests using imaging techniques such as CT scan, x-rays, MRI, PET and USG.OPD- Outdoor Patient Department or OPD is a medical centre or a clinic where the doctor advises the patient for his/her treatment . If you wish to start your own pathology business, it is sure to become profitable due to its high demand and scope. Below mentioned are a few statistics on the existing pathological and testing laboratories in the Indian market economy: India has more than 10,000 diagnostics including the pathology and radiology centres all across the country.Pathology accounted for nearly 80% of the market Radiology accounted for the remaining 20%. 90% of the total players in this industry are unorganizedSize of diagnostic industry pegged at around $5 billion, growing at 15-16% annually If you still want to know how to start a business centre of diagnostic centre in India? Here are the top Requirements to Start a Diagnostic Centre in India :
6 Essential Steps to start your own diagnostic centre
#1. Registrations and Licenses
The primary requirement to set up a pathology laboratory in India is to get your business registered with the government and acquire licenses and accreditations. These licences vary from place to place and business to business in India. Medical industry focuses on safety of their patients and in order to ensure that many rules and regulations are to be followed in setting up of a highly skilled team of professionals like doctors, nurses, technicians and pathologist for the success of their pathological centre. In order to get the reports accepted in hospitals and nursing homes, licenses are required otherwise it would be considered illegal. Take legal measures and apply for the licenses accordingly. Some important licences for pathology lab are mentioned below: Accreditation from National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL)Accreditation from Good Clinical Practices (GCP)Get registered with-Shops and Establishments Act ( Trade License)Clinical Establishment ActBiomedical waste disposal bodyGet approval for waste generation from pollution board in your stateGet NOC from State Fire department and Local Municipality Office #2. Location
Another important requirement for any health-care setup its location. The healthcare centre being set up should not be very far away or inside any house-buildings. It should be located at such a place and preferably on the ground floor (if possible) so that patients like the elderly, expectant mothers and the sick are able to easily commute to the place in order to avail the facilities of the centre for the proper diagnosis of their illness. The medical equipment also requires ample space and a cool environment for their efficient functioning which shall be provided by the air conditioners. For instance, an MRI can cost anything between Rs 1,000 and Rs 6,000 depending on the lab, its location as well as its geography. #3. Finance/ Investment
The setup cost of the lab purely depends on the services offered and investment you make in the business. The more the investment, more are the chances of patients coming to the pathology centre for diagnosis. Higher investments leads to higher services offered in the pathology that leads to increase in the number of patients coming to avail the services in the pathology centre. Most of the diagnostic centres or pathologies in India belong to the unorganized sector of the economy in India. However, a recent transition on the move of these diagnostic centres from the unorganized to the organized sector of the economy is seen. You must know that machineries are the most expensive to bear with and require air conditioning, electricity, water, maintenance and qualified technicians to work efficiently. This may lead to a high capital investment. ALSO READ : Top 10 Diagnostic Management Software #4. Medical Equipment
Instruments like clinical X-ray machines, CT scan machines, blood collection equipment, etc. are needed in running of a pathology lab. Without the equipment and their proper chemicals it is not possible to make the laboratory run. Many a times it is advisable to prepare a checklist of all the instruments that are to be bought and set up in your own pathology so that one may not miss out! #5. Qualified Technicians
Your staff is the reflection of your organization. You should appoint people who are professionals in their field of work. Laboratory technicians are also appointed to the thorough control of overall control and knowledge of the machines used in the laboratories. Trained and experienced staff should be appointed to make less error and adapt to the methods of laboratories. Due to its growth and the attainment of various licenses and accreditations, pathology laboratories need qualified professionals who shall carry out its medical care and diagnosis. Qualification required to open a pathology lab in India: S/he should be a qualified pathologist and must have required license to practice from the Medical Council of India.S/he will require a biochemist, a pathologist and a microbiologist for the pathology.Lab technicians with Diploma or bachelor’s in medical lab technology can easily qualify to open a pathology in India. #6. Software Tools
To set up a modern and hi –tech lab everything must be computerised. This helps in working in an organized manner as well. To name a few and how they work, here is a list of modern software that helps in lab management: ThinkLab - it is an easy-to-use software that keeps a track of medical records, scheduling & appointments, specialization based EMR, prescription management, case-based tracking, billing, inventory, analytics & MIS, alerts and notification, private chat, etcThinkWide- A fully automated laboratory solution that helps in the supervision of nursing homes, polyclinics, medical shops, pathology, and radiology labs. LiveHealth – With LiveHealth, you get the best solution to Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) which helps to maintain, manage and share your health records with your doctor as well.
How Much Will It Cost To Open A Pathology Lab In India?
Do you know how much money you need to pitch into this business? The setting up of a laboratory requires one to invest in the services that are offered in the laboratory. The more the services offered in the laboratories, higher are the chances of more and more patients utilising those services for their medical needs. The laboratory setup cost gives an idea of where the money will be going into: The location or ample amount of space needed in setting up of the laboratory. The maintenance of the machineries gives rise to the cost factor and air- conditioners are required to keep the environment coolMachinery but also software tools are required without which the pathology will be unable to function efficiently.Qualified technicians and a team of skilled, professional staff is also needed to have a thorough control and knowledge over the working of the machines being used in the laboratories.Costs such as expenses on maintenance of machineries, electricity, water, chemicals. Payment of the salaries of the staff working in the laboratory is also to be included in the cost factor of setting up the pathology. Diagnostic Centre Franchise Want guaranteed returns on your pathology business? Medical Franchise or a Diagnostics Franchise is a smart and fast way to earn returns on your business plan of setting up a pathology laboratory. You can enjoy ownership alone by appointing a very efficient pathologist to have a control over all the activities of the lab. Appointment of the staff will also be done by the pathologist .You will be a person only to provide funds and to earn profits, but the entire setup will be under the control of the pathologist. Diagnostics like Sukraksha Diagnostic, SRL Diagnostics, Dr. Lal PathLabs, Thyrocare, Lifecare, Speciality, Ranbaxy labs provide franchises to grow their business to ones who wish to set up a pathology laboratory. They provide all the support and encouragement to grow with the organization. Franchisees are better suited since they require minimum investment, low running costs and attractive financial returns. If plan A does not work, there is plan B. You shall make contracts with smaller labs to help them in services which they do not provide or is inefficient of providing due to lack of specific machines. If you are able to do so, your laboratory would receive more patients and also you can sell them your franchise in order to expand your business. Another way is have tie-ups with hospitals or nursing homes that do not have a laboratory. These hospitals require medical imaging or testing of blood samples in order to carry out the treatment of their patients. They shall send their patients to your diagnostic to carry out the tests or scans in order to proceed the treatment. FINAL WORD Proper planning with implementation and making decisions helps in growing this business. Among the 10,000 laboratories, 70% offer pathology services and the rest 30% provides imaging such as MRI, CT- Scan , X-rays, PET and USG. Consumers are aware of the market with differential prices of similar services. For patients, however, it is a difficult choice because they are unable to evaluate the quality vis-a-vis the price. Although corporate players such as Dr Lal Pathlabs, SRL Diagnostics and Quest Laboratories are gaining share, the industry is largely fragmented with over 90 % of the market being dominated by unorganised players. If every requirement is met in an organized manner, the business is sure to grow and earn decent income. If you are looking to start a business in this line, the right time is now. From a baby grad student—how do you suggest going about finding a lab to work in? I work full time in industry, so I’m in school part time. But I would ideally like to quit my job to join a lab (that would *hopefully* pay for school as well). Do you have any suggestions or tips about finding a lab? Thanks for all your help!
Hello hellloooo aaahh first off, thank you again for answering my follow-up questions on chat for clarification. When I see the phrases “grad student” and “finding a lab”, my brain immediately jumps to “finding a dissertation lab”, so I was all sorts of confused at first!
So, tips on finding an academic lab position:
Finding a job in an academic lab is quite similar to finding a job in any other sector. It’ll involve searching for open postings, applying, interviewing, etc. I think the only difference may be knowing where and how to search for these postings.
Create a profile on LinkedIn and use their Jobs section to look for these open positions. There are lots of postings for positions in academia on LinkedIn, and you have the benefit of seeing who in your network works there, and perhaps they can give you an introduction to the PI. I recommend using these specific search terms: research associate, laboratory technician, research technician, research specialist, research laboratory manager, laboratory manager.
You can also email PIs to see if they’re hiring (or would like to hire someone like you). Since academic research labs are sometimes their own little worlds, some PIs may find the person they want to hire first, and then post the position to make it official with HR and the university. Here’s a post I made regarding cold-emailing PIs to see if they’re hiring.
You can also check out this masterpost of links to job websites specifically for scientists (hopefully the links still work; I haven’t checked in a while).
If you’d like to stay in industry, some companies are willing to pay for their employees to further their education. My PhD program has 3 students who are also full-time employees at the local biotech company. They get the benefit of keeping their industry-salary (which is waaay higher than a grad student stipend), and their PIs and my program get the benefit of the company paying for their tuition. Win-win!
Other things to keep in mind:
For the lab to then pay for grad school, you would still have to apply to and get accepted in the graduate program at the university. Then the lab’s PI will have to agree to be your graduate mentor (and their lab be your dissertation lab), and then they’ll pay for your tuition, stipend, etc. However, as funding in academia can sometimes be fickle, there’s no guarantee that a well-funded lab today can afford a grad student in a few years (grad students are quite expensive because of our tuition costs, so we’re far more expensive for a PI than a post-doc or lab tech).
All PhD positions are inherently always paid for by the PI/program/university/fellowships, and this includes receiving a yearly stipend. So if you find a better position in industry, or realize you don’t want to stay in the same lab/university for your PhD research, it won’t jeopardize getting grad school paid for at all.
I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any follow-up questions (or if I completely missed the mark on something), and good luck!

5 Things You Must Know Before You Choose Dentistry as A Career
Dentists are needed every now and then; their services remain one of the essential ones in the health market. With each passing day, the dentistry field keeps recording improvements, as many more people are concerned about their oral health, and want to get the best care.
Yet, before you finally decide to become a dentist, and make it your right career path, here are some of the important things to note that will help you get the best out of this medical field.
What is Dentistry?
The human mouth is one of the essential parts of the body. Hence, the treatment and prevention of infections and disease in the mouth or oral area are referred to as Dentistry.
Dentistry requires the skillful combination of several roles and tasks at a time. This often includes the service of the dentist, and other companions like dental hygienists, assistants, nurses, therapists, and technicians.
Dentistry is closely related to courses like:
Clinical dentistry.
Pre-clinical dentistry.
Clinical Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry.
Should You Study Dentistry?
This question might sound weird, isn’t study about what I love you’ll ask? While this statement is true, there are some factors to ponder on when making this decision.
There are several endearing things about this medical and professional field of dentistry. For one, you are improving your life personally and striving to improve the life and health of others with your services.
With a Dentistry degree, you can easily practice at local surgeries dedicating at least a full year to working practices.
The fact that a professional dentist’s pay is high, and job security is also high, makes it more interesting for those who want to become professionals in the dentistry field.
Points to Note Before You Study Dentistry
The Dentistry field is a blossoming field, so if you are picking a career in dentistry, you are making a good choice.
But what kind of education are dentist professionals subjected to? Perhaps you are just interested in knowing what happens behind the scene in the dentists’ world?
Here is the right spot to find satisfying answers to your questions about the field of dentistry. The reward of entering this medical field is wonderful; you get to learn consistently, you improve the lives of others, and help people to better oral health regularly.
Below are some of the basic career paths in dentistry that you should know, the benefits of the dentistry field, the challenges of these fields, and tips to help you successfully become a dentist that offers the best services.
1. What are the Career Options in Dentistry?
So, what happens in the professional dentistry field? That will be the first point we’ll discuss in this section.
In any dentist office, you walk into; there are several roles occupied by different people at every given time, that is excluding the dentist themselves.
The roles of dentists are very similar to that of the conventional family doctor; their goal is to help improve your overall oral health rather than focusing on just a single aspect.
Dentists are those that have graduated with a doctorate from a registered dental school and given the license to practice as a dentist or to practice dentistry.
The major focus on dentistry is based on the health management and prevention of dental diseases. This calls for regular and frequent checks for signs and symptoms of dental issues in patients which may include those linked to the mouth, cranial (head), neck, or lymph related health issues.
Dentists are also the ones responsible for carrying out all dental processes which span across, and beyond the cleaning process and routine.
General dentistry is just the start of other wonderful opportunities available for dentists after complimenting their basic course, and another additional schooling in the dental school, and graduating from these courses.
Some of the available specializations include:
Orthodontics — a field that often deals with the alignment of the teeth and the jaw.
Periodontists — a field that deals with the gum, and other supporting structures of the mouth.
Oral Maxillofacial surgeon — this is another specialization that deals with the mouth, face, head, and neck bone surgeries and reconstructions. A person visiting a maxillofacial surgeon is probably battling with a significant dental issue.
Cosmetic dentistry — this is another field that is popularly referred to as aesthetic dentistry. This field deals with the appearance of the teeth, gums, and bite. This is often explored by those who seek to improve the general look of their mouth, and it can help boost their self-esteem, and get rid of injuries, or other natural deformation and development that does not look nice aesthetically.
2. Support and Associated Positions
The truth is, there are some support services in dentistry that do not require a doctorate in dentistry, yet they are very important in dentistry practices.
One such is dental assistants who help in caring for the instruments, sterilizing them, leading the patients to the examination room, introducing them to the procedure, taking photographic images of the mouth (x-ray), and the look of the patient’s teeth, etc.
Dental hygienists are another important support staff that does more than dental assistants. Their activities involve routine cleaning of the mouth, searching for decay in the mouth, and identifying other diseases. It is very easy to mistake a Hygienist for a dentist due to their wealth of understanding, and their competency when it comes to handling dental related issues. They are expected to see more of the actions when it comes to cleaning orally.
Dental receptionists are another important support staff in the dentist’s office. Without them, it will be hard for dentists and other staff to carry out their activities.
While they are not expected to have any formal education in the dentistry field like other support staff, they are billed with the task of understanding several aspects of activities that go on in the dentist’s office.
When you call to schedule an appointment in the clinic, or you want to get an appointment reminder or require other information regarding insurance and general dental activities, you can always count on the receptionist to help deliver this information. When kind and gentle, you get to enjoy their services more.
The dental laboratory technician is another important professional in the dental lab that manufactures and provides the needed tools for patients based on the recommendation from a dentist. They deliver appliances like mouth guards, oral retainers, amongst others.
3. Being a People’s Person
Most of the tasks in the dentistry industry involve interaction with people or patients. As such, people or human skill is one of the most important aspects of the industry. The number of clients will increase or decrease, depending on how you handle your patients. As such, your customer service is one of the best decisions you can make; they hold the key to the success of your activities.
Irrespective of the role, or job, the main goal of a dental professional is to ensure that their patients are comfortable, and enjoy their services, confident that the best dental care is what they are getting at all times.
For this to be the case, a dentist and his support staff must have the desire to help others and improve their lives. This desire is a key component of a dentist’s activities.
Dental professionals, due to the uniqueness and importance of their work in improving the health and functioning of their patients, they must have a mind prepared to help them.
They are also expected to exert authority and educate their patients on how to improve their overall oral health.
It is only natural for many to feel uncomfortable and scared when in dental offices, much is expected of professionals in handling their emotions and calming their mind about the services they will receive.
This little factor will influence how effective the treatment will be and how comfortable the patients will also be with the treatment. Trust and level of responsibility is an important factor that must be put into consideration.

You are expected to weigh your options early into the course. Options available include orthodontics, periodontics, pathology, endodontics, radiology, amongst others.
Step 5 — Register with the College of Dental Surgeon
Whether your goal is to become a dentist or a dental assistant, you are expected to register legally to permit you to work in your new place of residence. The requirement for registering depends on the location you are working or planning to work.
