What Goes Up

Not even a minute after Gregory pressed the button to summon him, Freddy charged into the lobby from one of the Employee Only doors. He stopped in the middle, between the main doors and the turnstiles, looking around. 

Gregory bit his lip and groaned internally. He could feel a lecture incoming. “I’m over here, Freddy!” 

Freddy turned in his direction, and Gregory ignored the burning in his cheeks as it still took Freddy a moment to find him. 

“Gregory! How did you get up there?” Freddy called, coming closer. Gregory would never fail to be impressed by the emotion that had been programmed into his voice. He sounded genuinely confused, with a definite hint of that parental anger that was born out of concern. 

And in all fairness to Freddy, Gregory couldn’t exactly blame him. The giant Freddy statue’s shoulder hadn’t seemed quite this high off the ground before he’d ended up sitting on it. 

“I panicked, okay?” he said loudly, his grip on the statue’s ear white-knuckled. “Monty was coming at me from one direction and Roxy was coming at me from another.” Gesturing at the floor around the statue’s base, he added defensively, “Do you see anywhere down there I could’ve hid? I’m only so fast, Freddy!” 

Freddy stared up at him for a few long, silent seconds before sighing. “And now you are stuck?” 

“And now I’m stuck.” 

After a minute of examining the statue, Freddy clambered up on the bench surrounding the statue, then onto the thin ledge above that, near the end of the mic stand, right where one of the golden hands wrapped around the pole. 

“All right, superstar,” Freddy said. “See if you can use the arm and the pole to slide down toward me.” 

It was as good a plan as any, so Gregory carefully extended his legs, wary of the metal’s slipperiness. He braced his sneakers against the mic stand and scooted toward the edge of the shoulder. 

“I will catch you,” Freddy promised, and Gregory got the feeling they both expected him to lose control of the speed of his descent. 

As predicted, though bracing himself on the arm kept him from toppling over, the pole had too steep of an angle for Gregory to go at his own pace. Much like running down a hill left your legs pinwheeling to keep up with your body, his feet skidded along the mic stand. Yelping, he managed to stay on course, and by the time he was no longer able to remain upright, Freddy was reaching up to catch him around the waist. 

If it’d been a human, they’d both have gone tumbling to the floor with many a bump and bruise. But Freddy didn’t so much as falter at having the full weight of a ten-year-old fall into his outstretched hands. 

With a serene hum, Freddy carefully turned away from the statue, lifting Gregory clear of the gold hand, and easily pulled him against his chest. Heart racing from the half climb, half controlled fall, Gregory held still as Freddy hopped to the bench, then to the floor. 

“Thanks,” he said, tiredly leaning his head against Freddy’s shoulder. He let out a slightly shaky breath, closing his eyes.

“You are very welcome, superstar,” Freddy replied, hastily leaving the lobby, dodging the STAFF bots as he went. “Though I must ask that you avoid climbing such tall objects in the future. You could very easily fall and get hurt, especially if I am not able to reach you.”
