Thoughts on Tere Bin

Its a Thursday night as I sit down to write this piece about the immensely popular Tere Bin - a drama which I probably would have passed up if it wasn't for the lead pair. I am not a fan of Siraj ul Haq's style of direction and had never heard of the writer before. However, the cast drew me in - and what has kept me coming back. I have to say though, the script also has quite a bit of jaan. On the surface its an enemies to lovers story - but do they both really hate each other? I think Meerab does but as we wait for Murtasim's backstory to unfold, I am actually of the opinion that Murtasim has admired Meerab for some time. To me he doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would be attracted to flakey girls so it makes sense that he admires her for who she is but is caught in this web of familial rights and wrongs. My theory ,then, is that the only reason he so vehemently refuses to marry her is because of this conversation in episode 2 and the knowledge that Meerab would never want to marry him and stay in this house she calls Qaid numa.

He uses very similar language when he tells Maa Begum that he will not marry her - meri qaid se bacha lein - and his refusal moving forward is very driven by Meerab's. He's got too much ego to accept a girl who doesn't want him

Now, lets talk about Meerab. If you've read enough romance novels, like me, you know what's going on here. She's bothered by Murtasim. He's everything she doesn't want to like and yet she's drawn to him - this both confuses and angers her when she is in his presence. Which brings us to THE scene - I speak of the slap followed by the fainting.

When this initially played out, I was enraged - rightfully so - even though I wanted to trust Yumna & Wahaj and their good sense. However, after this week's episode I'm going to forgive the slap and actually believe it may have served a purpose.

First, going back to the romance novels (I profess to reading too many), this is the point in the story where the heroine would have bothered the male protagonist so much that he would have kissed her "roughly" , without consent, and she would have given into it. Then, both would gone their separate ways but unable to forget what had transpired. Do you see the symbolism - he slaps her, she faints pliant in his arms.

Enter the revenge angle in Tere Bin. Seems now that the slap was deliberately out of character - the guilt of it is what is driving Murtasim's softer behaviour and driving him to acquiesce to Meerab's requests. It is also what legitimizes Meerab's vengeance towards Murtasim - else she really wouldn't have a leg to stand on when it came down to why she was making his life difficult along with the lives of everyone else in the house. He's clearly smitten.

Just like the kiss in the romance novel, nobody can forget about the slap. Question is, when do the two finally give in and what finally breaks the camel's back? As the OST suggests, something really traumatic and heartwrenching will happen tab woh samjhein ge. Here for ALL THE DRAMA and the shadeed filmy handling of the story.

Murtasim’s Internal Strife

'Tere Bin' kicks off with an initial apparent general animosity between the two protagonists who find it unbearable to be in each other's presence but do they really hate each other? As the story unfolds, it becomes evident that there is a palpable mutual attraction between the two that they're both trying to escape for reasons of their own. 

Murtasim's general demeanor towards Meerab has hints of secret admiration, one that seemingly has been there for a while (more on that later). 

For instance, In Episode 3 when Meerab is seen preparing tea for Murtasim (apparently, not), Murtasim isn't as irritated by her presence in his room as he was by that of Haya earlier in the episode. He even amuses himself by engaging in a stare-off with her through the mirror. 

Murtasim ranks his reasons for not wanting to marry her in the following order:

1. He doesn't consider Meerab a part of his khaandan, thus marrying her is inconceivable to him. 

2. Marrying someone that he's not compatible with is not possible for him. 

3. He doesn't regard Meerub as worthy of being the Khaani to his Khaan. 

While Murtasim points out these as 'reasons' for not wanting to marry her, these are rather excuses that he uses to block his own feelings for Meerab. 

Murtasim's first reason is figuratively him building a wall around his heart to guard his own heart. He is a territorial man who is not fond of outsiders. By considering Meerab not a part of his khaandan, Murtasim puts up a huge roadblock to prevent himself from pursuing the road that leads to Meerab. His second reason is just an echo of what Meerab said to him. Finally, his third reason is intended to take a jab at Meerab's ego - to bring her down from her high ground. 

In reality, Murtasim's refusal is strongly driven by Meerub's refusal to marry him. He knows that Meerab would never change her mind about him (from the conversation that takes place between the two in Episode 2). He has too much ego to want someone who doesn't want him.

Murtasim went from Haya is like a sister to me like Maryam, to even if Meerab was not there I would never marry you, to stay away from my room else I will kick you out of the house, to you can never replace Meerab in my heart or mind, to I will marry You

Next week’s promo sent the Tere Bin fandom in a collective meltdown on twitter and I can’t stop laughing at how this show manages to stoop to new depths that we couldn’t even imagine it could! Wow I truly haven’t seen a writer destroy the characters , the romance and the love story in the manner that Nooran has destroyed Murtasim, Meerab and Terebin.

I expect WahajAli and YumnaZaidi will read the entire scripts and won’t have blind trust in makers next time 🤣

But then again post E20 I was absolutely convinced Haya is the lead character, not Murtasim or Meerab and Tere Bin is written from her POV. The OST makes absolute sense if you see it from her perspective. Nooran loves Haya, which is why she is the only consistent character on that show. We thought we were watching Murtasim and Meerab’s romance but the real deal was Haya.

We all deserve this for giving any amount of mind space and precious time to this show that has now effectively made my IQ drop to negative levels. Still not watched an entire episode post E20 - but 5 mins each from last 34 episodes have done enough brain damage.
