Assessing the Level of Cooperation on Ensuring Sustainable Land Use Management in Naivasha, Kenya Between Water Resource Users Association and Water Resource Authority by Robert M Kibugi | Juniper Publishers
Observed conflict between Water Resource Users Association (WRUA) and Water Resources Authority (WRA) on land use management continue to undermine the ability of Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) programs to meet its objectives. The success of some PES programs shows it can attain “win-win” outcomes. The responses of 1143 PES farmers and 235 non-PES farmers interviewed were examined. Regression analysis were used to determine the significant association between the dependent variables, impact of extension officers, cost of agricultural inputs and knowledge of negotiation process, water regulations and protected areas. The outcomes of these regression was synthesized to identify key factors that inform the level of cooperation among stakeholders involved in Payment for Ecosystem Services in Lake Naivasha Basin. We discovered that to cooperate involves having a better understanding of the dynamics of the PES program, having the required knowledge and information through training or capacity building. Cooperation between these agencies and with support from World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Imarisha Naivasha has increased the understanding of resource management and also led to a reduction in conflict. Cooperation mechanisms for WRUA and WRA monitoring land use are a means to address the increasing complexity of land use management. Our results emphasis the need for increased participation by the extension officers to be able to capacitate the farmers on opportunity and transaction costs that pertains to PES. Also to develop better knowledge to understand the dynamics of PES.

Gundua Feature: Johnson Wafula on Going Digital and Helping Connect West Pokot Homes to the Water Grid
Tumblr media
CAPTION: Johnson having a chat with young mothers in Po’land (as West Pokot is referred to), ahead of a kitchen farming tips class.
I’m Johnson Wafula, a Bachelor of Science graduate from Kakamega who’s been deployed to Ywalateke Primary School in West Pokot County.
Before joining G-United and coming here, I honestly thought that volunteering was a waste of time. I began warming up to the idea when I came across some features from the first cohort about getting out of their comfort zone, experiencing a whole new world and developing new life skills. Even more research showed me how critical volunteering is to society. It got me thinking about how I could also impact someone's life positively - in fact even a whole society.
Having no idea what to expect from my placement to West Pokot, I left the two-week training we went through at Thogoto Teacher’s Training College in Kiambu County in August 2016 more prepared than I was when I left my home. At the training, we were taken through how to adjust to new environments and given practical tips on how to facilitate remedial sessions with struggling readers.
It took me close to a day to get to Ywalateke Primary School, which is North East of the county headquarters at Kapenguria Town, and just a couple of kilometres South of the vast Turkana County to the North, which borders South Sudan and Ethiopia. It’s an extraordinary institution to me because despite the difficult environmental conditions over here, both the teachers and the pupils are determined to excel and post exemplary results. The head of the institution is so cooperative as well, always willing to support the projects we seek to initiate.

CAPTION: With one of the young readers in a Read Aloud Session
However, the life-changing experience I’ve gone through has not been without its hurdles. For instance, there’s a stark language barrier, which with time I’ve been able to cope with and learn a bit of the local dialect, Pokot. This came in handy especially during my Read Aloud Sessions. A number of the readers initially had difficulties with the syllables and letters, but as we got to understand each other better, the sessions have become more exciting for both of us. I can tell they look forward to the sessions as much as I do.
I approached a local Community-Based Organisation called WRUAs, who I must say have the biggest of hearts and are willing and committed to partner with anyone purposed to improve or develop the community. Having established a good rapport with locals since I landed here, it was not too difficult engaging with them, though I felt overwhelmed by their expectation. Having gone through my internship at a water company called NZOWASKO, I shared my ideas on the varied ways of ensuring homesteads are connected to a water supply system.

An interesting development while I’ve been here is the rollout of the Government’s laptop project for Primary Schools. In an era of digital advancement, I had the privilege of supporting one of the class teachers roll out the hand-held devices. The use and management of these in the school started with much curiosity from both teachers and students, and my co-volunteer and I were excited as well to share our expertise.

CAPTION: With my co-VGA Kamau, facilitating one of the training sessions with teachers at Ywalateke Primary.
We started by light training sessions with teachers during lunch hours helping where we could in the evenings. By the close of the last term, most learners could now switch on the tablets, open their class syllabus and turn off the devices. It was a great achievement for the school fraternity seeing as a significant number of them had never used a computer in their whole life. Teachers now have a reason to celebrate as the school’s exam results can now be analysed and presented on spreadsheets.
Even though I have just under four months left here , I am truly thankful for all these experiences and I’m excited to see what else is in store for me.

Assessing the Governance of Payment for Ecosystem Services in the Upper Catchments of the Lake Naivasha Basin | Juniper Publishers
The importance of Water Resource Users Association (WRUA) committees is examined. Observed activities of the WRUA committees continue to enhance the efforts of members to engage in Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) programs to meet its objectives. The success of some WRUA committees shows it can attain “win-win” outcomes in managing PES issues. The responses of 1143 PES farmers and 235 non-PES farmers interviewed were examined. Regression analysis were used to determine the significant association between the dependent variables, importance of WRUA committee and knowledge of negotiation process, water regulations and protected areas. The outcomes of these regression was synthesized to identify key factors that inform the formation of committees. Governance at the local level needs to be strengthened with streamlining the roles of each institution in addressing the water quality issue. The cooperation among all stakeholders was based on how they support the committees through capacity building, support through the provision of tree seedlings and awareness creation at the community levels. The results indicates the need for the government of Kenya to develop an expanded policy agenda on PES which will include WRUA committee formation. Also ensure the allocation of funds for institutional and management reorganization, for example WRUA committees are available.
