A suspected car burglar in Tennessee found himself begging for help from area residents after his intended victim returned gunfire, according to the local sheriff's office.
The unidentified homeowner living in the Websters Grove subdivision in Shelby County said he received a call from a neighbor on Thursday evening that there were several people standing outside his residence, Shelby County deputies told CBS Memphis affiliate WREG.
The homeowner told authorities that when he went outside, he saw two men in his driveway and another two men sitting in a white car on the street. The two in the driveway made a run for it when they spotted the homeowner, with one suspect firing a gun at the homeowner.
The homeowner was struck in the ankle but managed to return fire on the suspects, WREG reported.

(CNN) — What started as a protest over the death of a Memphis man devolved into chaos after demonstrators threw bricks at police and vandalized squad cars, officials said. At least 25 officers and deputies were injured in the melee Wednesday night, police said. Mayor Jim Strickland said six officers were taken to a hospital. The turmoil came after US marshals shot and killed a man Wednesday night in the north Memphis neighborhood of Frayser, officials said. Marshals were trying to stop 20-year-old Brandon Webber, who was wanted on multiple warrants, outside a home as Webber was getting into a vehicle, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said. Webber "reportedly rammed his vehicle into the officers' vehicles multiple times before exiting with a weapon," the bureau said. "The officers fired striking and killing the individual. No officers were injured." What we know about the shooting that sparked the protests News of Webber's death spread quickly as protesters hurled rocks at police, tore down a concrete wall outside a business and smashed the windows of squad cars and a fire station. In addition to wounded officers, two journalists were also injured, the mayor said. Protesters unleash anger toward a different agency "US marshals were involved in a fatal officer-involved shooting. MPD went to the scene to assist them and to contain the scene," Memphis police Director Michael Rallings told CNN affiliate WREG. "For some reason, they turned their anger toward the Memphis Police Department." The police director and mayor lauded Memphis officers for keeping their composure despite coming under attack. "I'm impressed by their professionalism and incredible restraint as they endured concrete rocks being thrown at them and people spitting at them," the mayor said. #memphis #memphishair #memphistn #memphishairstylist #memphisstylist #memphisphotographer #memphisart #memphisartist #memphismua #memphisbarber #memphisboutique #memphismusic #fashion #memphisphotography #memphis_nails #memphisgrizzlies #choose901 #memphisdepay #memphismayfire #memphisnails #memphisjookin #memphiszoo #tennessee #memphisevents #ootd #art #naturalhair #901 #photography #repost (at Columbia University in the City of New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByqZ-pXJV1c/?igshid=1gba6twyli0en

Tennessee Rat News Update November 1, 2019
[caption id="attachment_1076" align="aligncenter" width="454"] Photo Credit: Pixabay[/caption]
Tennessee has long had issues with rats, particularly roof rats. In 2017, Memphis was named the most roof rat infested city in the United States. Many businesses and homeowners have felt the impacts of rat infestations. One local Family Dollar store was forced to close it's doors for months due to a suspected rodent infestation.
In other rat related news, Tennessee officials have been offering residents advice on how to combat some of the rat infestation issues. They explain that it all starts with cutting off the problem at the source, their food. Rats are known to get a majority of their food from the garbage we produce and leave out on the curb or in the alley way. Officials are encouraging residents to walk around their neighborhoods and evaluate how garbage is being managed. They also are advising people to check their homes thoroughly for small holes that may be allowing rats easy access inside.

WREG has now obtained the health inspection report after a Hickory Hill Family Dollar store was closed because of a rat infestation.
It details rodent droppings on store shelves, chewed open packages and a dead rat discovered in a trap in the stock room. When the health inspector visited May 23 following an anonymous complaint, they said they saw a living rat perched on a cooler.
“That’s gross. They need to clean it up,” said former customer Jacob Omambia.
Community activist Patricia Rogers, who’s spent months documenting the trash heaps accumulating at Family Dollar stores around Memphis, went further in her assessment. Read more

Summary: A Memphis Family Dollar store was shut down earlier this year due to a suspected rat infestation. A local news station was able to obtain the health inspection report that detailed things such as rodent droppings found on store shelves, chewed open packages and even a rat trapped in the stock room.
To get rid of rats, take a look at your garbage.
While a pest control company might deal with rats temporarily, rats will rebound unless you get to the root of the problem, said Bobby Corrigan, who holds a doctorate of urban rodentology from Purdue University.
Terminix named Memphis the second most roof rat infested city in 2017.
And the best way to solve a rat problem, whether in a city or an individual home, is to cut them off from food sources, says Corrigan. Read more

Memphis man believes serial killer’s sketch shows his murdered mother
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man believes his mother was one of dozens of women murdered by a serial killer decades ago after seeing a sketch on social media this week that bears a striking resemblance to her.
Samuel Little has confessed to 90 murders, and drew sketches for investigators of some of his victims who have never been identified.
After seeing one of those sketches, Anthony Jones says he believes the woman pictured is his mother, according to WREG.
The last time he saw his mother was Christmas Eve 1996, when he was 15.
“She was like, ‘I love you son… I’m gonna see you for Christmas tomorrow.’ I’m like, ‘Yes ma’am, I’ll see you tomorrow.’ Next day comes, nobody heard from my mama. Day after that, nobody heard from my mama,” he said.
Nearly two weeks later, Priscilla Baxter-Jones was found dead in the Mississippi River.
The 36-year-old prostitute had been raped, stabbed and strangled, Anthony said.
“It always been on his mind heavy about what happened to his mom,” said Jones’ wife, Erica Wells-Jones. “He always said that he wished the killer would come forward or that he could find the killer in some type of way.”
Then this week, more than two decades later, Erica saw something that might finally bring the closure they’ve been waiting for — a sketch of a woman  drawn by Little of a woman he says he murdered in Memphis during the same time frame.
“We put those pictures side by side and you know, like, that’s her,” she said.
And not only did Anthony recognize who he believes without a doubt is his mother, he says he immediately recognized the killer, too.
He believes his mom and Little possibly knew each other for months before her murder, and that he even met him.
“I just seen the older picture first and I automatically knew who he was ‘cause I don’t forget faces. That’s just me. I can’t forget faces,” he said. “My mama’s killer just popped up outta the blue, and he drew a sketch of my mama.”
Investigators say Little drew sketches of at least 16 of his unidentified victims, and admitted to strangling the woman drawn in this sketch, putting her in the back of his car and dumping her body in the Mississippi River.
Anthony and his wife says they know they can’t bring his mother back, but they hope that by coming forward, they’ll be able to help keep Little in prison.
“For him to sit there and do the stuff that he did and talk about the way he treats people, that ain’t right,” Anthony said.
“It would be a big weight off him and his brothers’ shoulders to know that this man is off the street,” Erica added.
It’s worth noting that the family says Jones was stabbed and investigators say Little did not stab any of his victims.
If you have information on the identity of the woman in this drawing, investigators with the Memphis Police Department Homicide Bureau are asking for your help. Please contact:

Ed. Note: In honor of the International Blues Challenge – which kicks off this week on Beale Street – I’m happy to share this post from new ILM contributor Wesley Paraham. – Holly Updated January 2019. Southern Avenue is a band tempered by Memphis. They’ve got it in their name, you can see it in their members, and you can certainly feel it in their music. Here’s a little background information: Guitarist Ori Naftaly grew up in Israel, but that didn’t stop Memphis from finding on the other side of the world. “Albert King, the blues, I listened to everything that came out of Memphis,” he said. He became an incredibly skilled blues guitarist  and made his way here to compete in the International Blues Challenge. “It was a dream to be able to come,” he added. It was such a dream, in fact, that he decided to stay. While ingraining himself in the Memphis blues scene, he met Tierinii Jackson. She’s Memphis-born and grew up in the church, and we all know that’s where some of the best talent is nurtured. Ori and Tiernii starting writing songs together, and they clicked. “Everything I lack, she has. And everything she lacks, I have.” We had the best time at the #Sundance @ascap music cafe!!! #SouthernAvenue #MemphisMusic #StaxRecords A video posted by ⓜ ⓔ ⓜ ⓟ ⓗ ⓘ ⓢ (@southernavenuemusic) on Jan 25, 2017 at 3:53pm PST Apparently, they worked so well together that they both shelved very successful solo gigs in order to form a band. To fill out the songs they had written, Tiernii brought her sister Tikyra in to play drums. They threw in jazz bassist Daniel McKee and keyboardist Jeremy Powell to round it out. They weren’t even a band a whole year yet before they recorded an album and signed to Stax Records. Before a recent live studio appearance Southern Avenue did in 2017 on WREG News Channel 3’s Live at 9, news anchor Alex Coleman remarked that some people are calling the band “the future of blues music.” That’s a lofty statement to throw at any young band, but, after watching their performance, it’s not hard to come to the same conclusion. Southern Avenue’s brand of blues is infused with soul, R&B, rock, and jazz in a genuine way that presents a valiant effort move the genre away from the bombastic space that contemporary blues rock occupies. Photo provided by Southern Avenue and used with permission. For use by I Love Memphis Blog only. I got the chance to listen to their debut album, and the track I keep revisiting is “Love Me Right”, a solemn, soulful ballad about the pains of unrequited loyalty in a relationship. Even though their sound errs on the side of classic, modern influences are in the forefront. Tierinii Jackson’s voice is stadium quality. There’s much more Beyoncé force than Memphis Minnie grit there, and it’s a blessing. To me, that’s what makes this band worth talking about. In addition to the ridiculous amount of talent you get by tallying everyone in this band, Southern Avenue is youthful and vibrant. They’re out here giving life to a genre too long dominated by people obsessed with emulating the past. And that’s a good deed done for blues fans everywhere. A video posted by ⓜ ⓔ ⓜ ⓟ ⓗ ⓘ ⓢ (@southernavenuemusic) on Dec 17, 2016 at 8:38am PST Apparently, a number of folks agree with me. Not only has Southern Avenue found success touring internationally, they represented Memphis in 2016’s International Blues Challenge. American Blues Scene described their single “Don’t Give Up” as being “as comfortable at a Friday night fish fry as it would at Sunday morning services.” I mean, if that’s not a glowing review, I don’t know what is. Updates 2019: Southern Avenue’s debut eponymous record was released on February 24, 2017 from Stax Records. You can and should get it on their website, on iTunes, on Google Play, on Amazon, or listen to them on Spotify. In May 2018, Memphis Tourism sent the band to represent Memphis at the huge Blues On Broachbeach Music Festival in Australia.  Also in May 2018, Southern Avenue won the Blues Music Awards’ Best Emerging Artist category. They’re now out touring the country.  Check out this special video feature about why the band loves Memphis. Follow the band on Instagram, Twitter,  Facebook, and their website. Full tour dates listing.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Don’t Give Up (@southernavenuemusic) on Jul 27, 2018 at 11:15pm PDT                               About The Author Wesley Morgan Paraham loves the 901 so much that his cat is named Belvedere. Panola County native and Ole Miss graduate Otis Sanford will discuss and sign his new book, “From Boss Crump to King Willie: How Race Change Memphis Politics,” on Monday, April 3, at Square Books on the Square in Oxford from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
“From Boss Crump to King Willie,” published by University of Tennessee Press, offers an in-depth look at the vital role that race played in the political evolution of Memphis, from the rise of longtime political boss and Mississippi native Edward Hull Crump to the election of Dr. Willie Herenton as the city’s first black mayor. Filled with vivid details on the workings of municipal politics, this accessible account explores the nearly century-long struggle by African Americans in Memphis to secure recognition and gain a viable voice in the city’s affairs.
Charles Crawford, Professor of History at the University of Memphis said, “Otis Sanford’s ‘From Boss Crump to King Willie’ provides the best understanding of this aspect of Memphis’ history and will be required reading for students, scholars and anyone who wants a lucid, readable account of the city’s past experiences.”
Sanford, a graduate of North Panola High School and the University of Mississippi, explains that African Americans in Memphis, many of whom migrated to Memphis from plantations in Mississippi, overwhelmingly supported the Crump organization because he, at least, listened to some of their concerns. The book probes Crump’s hot-and-cold relationship with local newspaper editors, some of whom castigated his machine politics.
The book goes on to explore the political vacuum left in the wake of Crump’s 1954 death. But then, some 25 years later, a well-educated native son, Dr. Willie Herenton, emerged as the leader that the black community had long hoped for. Herenton proved to be the right man at the right time to eventually make racial and political history in the city.
The book also focuses on how politicians from Crump to Herenton recognized the power of the African American vote.
The book is a culmination of four years of research and includes interviews with key figures prominent in the political evolution of Memphis, including Dr. Herenton, former Federal Prosecutor Mike Cody, former Mayor Dick Hackett, former City Councilman Fred Davis, retired Federal Judge Harry Wellford, political activist Miriam DeCosta Willis, and former Memphis Police Director Buddy Chapman. The book is currently on sale through utpress.org or by calling 1-800-621-2736. To schedule a discussion with the author and book signing, call 1-901-495-5572.
Otis Sanford holds the Hardin Chair of Excellence in Economic/Managerial Journalism at the University of Memphis. He also serves as the political commentator for WREG-TV in Memphis. A former managing editor and current political columnist at the Memphis Commercial Appeal, he also worked for the Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger, the Pittsburgh Press, and the Detroit Free Press. He was inducted into the Tennessee Journalism Hall of Fame in 2014.
