minor life update, major news

I know a few of you know and a lot of you don't, but I've been fighting with workers comp for an entire year now to get an MRI done on my neck and upper back due to an overuse injury I obtained from lifting so much.

I have permanent nerve damage in my back. It causes me a lot of pain to sit for long periods of time as the unique burning and electricity of nervous pain starts before the muscles lock up, often accompanied by the ring and pinky fingers of my left hand going numb. I have days where I am entirely bedridden.

I have had my MRI denied five times.

Today, 08/01/2024, I received a letter in the mail stating that they have overturned that denial and I am finally getting what I fought so hard for.

It may or may not tell me what is actually going on in my neck and back, but I have put so much blood, sweat, and tears into this.

I finally won.

There’s something so vicious about Helena saying, ‘’here you go’’ and handing Chris’ mobility aid to Eddie the moment they walk in. It shows a total disregard for Chris’ comfort and safety. She loves the idea of a do-over kid, someone to dress-up and puppet like she did her own son, but she shows no concern for Chris’ needs. She doesn’t want to ‘deal with’ Chris’ disability, so she’ll happily allow Eddie to manage the parts of Chris’ life that are impacted by his CP. If the Diaz parents cared to, they’d know that Chris’ CP affects every aspect of his life. But they don’t care, so they only acknowledge his disability when it inconveniences them.

And Eddie, EDDIE MOTHERFUCKIN DIAZ, steps in and assists Chris with the crutches with such practiced ease. Because he’s an experienced caretaker, because the two of them have a routine, because he is himself disabled, because they’ve taken the time to learn how to accommodate each other’s disabilities. ‘Cause Eddie isn’t just thrilled to be a parent, he’s thrilled to be Chris’ parent (see: ‘’I love kids’’ ‘’I love this one’’). He cherishes the relationship he’s built with Carla, and he loves that he got to build a cool ass skateboard with his totally platonic boybestie so that they could all spend an enriching day in the park together. I’M SO HAPPY THAT THE DIAZ BOYZ ARE REUNITED.

and it's not just the default "sitting" animation, because everyone (other than Taash) sits with their legs together, and he also does it when he's crouching and kneeling too

his default state, when his legs are at all bent, seems to be just straight up manspreading

ah. I've just learned from yet another terrible Humans Are Space Orcs post that these people have an acronym for the genre: HFY, short for humans fuck yeah. which I actually managed to guess correctly.

I found this out because poeple in the notes of the terrible post were linking to a story and I'm reading the reviews and the top most upvoted one is one talking about all the problems with this whole Humans Are Special kind of thing.

Contrived Beyond Belief

The author tries. They really, really try to write good HFY. The characters are good and three dimensional. But the genre is HFY and that, by definition, means Mary Sue applied to an entire species. It's a bad story that gets worse the more and more HFY tropes get included.

The worldbuilding is contrived beyond belief. We're expected to believe the entire galaxy has almost entirely herbivorous species reach sapience. They believe that only herbivores could do it because 'ooo carnivores are sooo spooky and could never work together'.

Because somehow, none of their world's predatory wildlife ever works together. Ever.

And we're also expected to believe every single one of these herbivorous species has a constitution that makes fainting goats look like the pinnacle of health, prone to collapse at the faintest hint of opposition. Because aggressive herbivores don't exist, obviously. (Hint: They do. Even on Earth.) It's not even described well. The herbivore aliens being scared don't describe the fear, it's just 'oh I feel a rush of fear chemicals'. Who writes that way?

Oh and nevermind that humans, the galactic newcomers are, OF COURSE, the ones who decide the entire fate of the galaxy and rapidly overtake everyone else. Give me a break.

The grammar and spelling and such are all top notch. But you can't polish a turd and make it anything else. I'm sorry.

nothing about this is really funny to me, a korean, seeing my country being disrespected by the french government's inability to distinguish between Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Republic of Korea/South Korea. they repeated the proper name for North Korea when they appeared later. the north korean athletes haven't been able to compete since pyeongchang 2018 they deserved respect. both did. if they had messed both up on purpose, it would cause political backlash. it still has, just like this.
