Smile Direct Club customers 'gutted' and 'left in lurch'
Chantelle Jones
By Lora Jones
Business reporter, BBC News
Customers of Smile Direct Club have told the BBC how they feel “left in the lurch”, “outraged” and “gutted” after the remote dentistry firm shut down.
Chantelle Jones, 32, paid a total of £1,800 to straighten her teeth before her wedding next year. While her top teeth had aligned, she was waiting for new moulds for her bottom teeth.
“I’m not sure if I’m going to get any money back,” she said.
Dentists have also expressed “great concern” for stranded patients.
Late on Friday, it emerged that a last-minute rescue attempt for Smile Direct Club had failed as the company was weighed down by debt.
“I found out in a TikTok video that they’d gone bankrupt. I think it’s an absolute disgrace how they have treated customers,” says Chantelle from Churchdown in Gloucestershire.
“The worst thing about it is… the app has not closed down but when I click on the chat button it’s not there. They seem completely uncontactable and I’m just left in the lurch.”
Oliver, a photographer from Kent, spent £799 with Smile Direct Club just under two weeks ago in the hope of straightening his smile.
“I’m gutted. It’s a fair chunk of money and I feel a bit numb about it really,” he says.

Founded in 2014, the orthodontics company styled itself as a disruptor to the “bricks-and-mortar” dental industry.
In traditional dentistry, “train-track” braces and clear aligners are fitted by dentists and orthodontists themselves, or a trained orthodontic therapist, after an in-person consultation.
Many customers were drawn to US-based Smile Direct Club because of lower prices, and the fact that they typically take the moulds for their aligners themselves at home.
The Nashville-based firm debuted on the Nasdaq stock exchange in 2019 and it was once valued at about $8.9bn (£7bn).
But it failed to turn a profit and in late September the firm filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US. At the time it had nearly $900m worth of debt, according to Fortune magazine.
And late on Friday the firm said it had made the “incredibly difficult decision to wind down its global operations”.
It said that any orders that have not yet been made or shipped have been cancelled, and apologised for any inconvenience caused. It recommended that if customers in the US, UK and elsewhere want to carry on with their treatment, they should get in touch with a local dentist.
There would be more information on refunds, it said, as the bankruptcy process determines next steps.
It has angered some customers, however, by saying that the “lifetime smile guarantee” it previously offered was no longer valid, while those with payment plans set up are expected to continue making payments.

Dentists warn of damage from braces ordered online
Teah from the West Midlands told the BBC that she had paid a £135 deposit for her aligners about two weeks ago.
The treatment, which typically takes about four to six months, cost £1,739, which Teah was planning to pay back using the Smile Direct Club payment plan.
She says she feels “outraged and anxious” about the fact she is still being asked to make payments.
“It is not right that I [am expected to] pay such a large sum of money even though I didn’t receive any treatment or merchandise from them.”
The BBC has contacted Smile Direct Club for comment on Chantelle, Oliver and Teah’s experiences.
What should Smile Direct Club customers do?
Lisa Webb, consumer law expert at the organisation Which?, said that many customers would feel “adrift” due to the company going bust.
She pointed out that where refunds would be available, they will be handed by liquidators. “But customers will be at the back of a long queue of creditors so this is unlikely to amount to much, if anything at all,” she said.
She recommended that anyone in the UK who is still waiting for products, and has not had their order cancelled and paid via credit card, could also try to claim their money back via Section 75 under the Consumer Credit Act.
Dental bodies have also spoken out after the firm’s collapse.
The British Dental Association (BDA) said that it had raised concerns about the company offering plastic aligners remotely and the potential risk of misdiagnosis with regulators.
“Dentists are left to pick up the pieces when these providers offer wholly inappropriate treatment,” said BDA chair Eddie Crouch.
“It shouldn’t take a bankruptcy to protect patients from harm. It requires decent laws and effective regulation.”

And Anjli Patel of the British Orthodontic Society suggested that the firm was avoiding responsibility for customers’ treatment in a way that was “nothing short of scandalous”.
It is calling on watchdogs in the UK to ensure any firm providing orthodontics directly to patients in the UK are held to high standards.
Smile Direct Club vigorously defended its practices throughout and said consistently that customers’ treatments were reviewed by licensed professionals, while risks were listed as well.
In the statement on its website, the company said that it had “improved more than two million smiles and lives”.
But that is no consolation to those who now find themselves out of pocket with incomplete treatment.
Both Chantelle and Oliver regret being attracted by Smile Direct Club’s cheaper prices.
“I should have gone to my own dentist. Although it was more than double the amount of money – I was quoted £4,500 – I would have rather paid that looking back in hindsight,” says Chantelle.
Neither are hopeful of getting their retainers or their money back.
“I went cheap, and the whole phrase ‘buy cheap buy twice’ comes to mind,” says Oliver, adding that he was asking his bank for help and wanted to “fight his corner”.

Finding the Best Overall Wedding Photographer in West Midlands
If it’s a wedding ceremony, your photographs will probably be your most treasured keepsake, apart from the memories. As soon as you get your hands on the digital copies, you’ll feel like posting them on social media. After half-a-century, you’ll look at the images and remember the vows that you made with each other, how the kiss of union felt, and what the first dance was like. However, the photos need to look lifelike if you wish to experience these feelings, and for that to happen, you’ll need the best photographer. So, how will you find such a service provider?
Tumblr media
Start with the venue: The best Wedding Photographer West Midlands available at www.ericphotography.co.uk suggests choosing an appropriate venue first. In fact, you should book his/her services at least nine months before that all-important day arrives.
Use social networking platforms: Do you have a sorority sister or a BFF? Did he/she get hitched recently? Did he/she post images of the event on social media? If he/she did, and if you liked what you saw, then don’t hesitate to ask him/her about the Wedding Photographer West Midlands who stood behind the lens. You can also ask other friends, relatives, or colleagues if they got married recently. They should be able to point you in the right direction. Even marriage planners offer excellent referrals.
Photography styles: When it comes to photography styles, there is plenty for you to explore. You must avoid getting into the field without doing some homework first. Some people like their images to be oversaturated with colour, while others vintage, washed-out pictures. You may not even realize that you like a specific style until you see it. That’s why going through the portfolios of service providers is mandatory. It will give you an idea of what they are capable of and what you expect from them.
An interview: Generally, photography service providers send an email with a link to their portfolio before they meet you in person. Make sure that you receive images captured at an event that happened recently. Otherwise, the scam artists will use their best photographs to lure you into booking their services. Checking out recent photographs is a superb way of gauging the worth of the service provider.
The fee: Of course, you were going to talk about it even if this topic didn’t mention it. It’s here because some people make a decision without even asking how much they need to pay. These people usually end up regretting their choice. Understandably, knowing everything about the fee should be in your best interests. Some of the service providers charge an hourly rate, while others have a flat rate. A few experts even have price packages to offer based on what they specialize in.
Your gut will do the rest
Finally, you have to rely on your instincts. Nothing else can guide you better than your gut. If possible, you should also opt for a test run. Pre-marriage or engagement photo-shoot events will allow you to know the service provider better. Additionally, you’ll feel more comfortable about getting your photos clicked by a stranger, especially on a day when your emotions will be topsy-turvy.

Hi! My name is Chris, I am a qualified, West Midlands based wedding photographer but happy to travel anywhere. My style and aim is to capture 3 things at your wedding emotion, composition and beautiful light. It’s always a bit odd writing about yourself but since I’m probably the one non-guest at your wedding that you’ll spend the most time with, you will want to get to know me a bit better and how I approach things, and why I’d be a good fit for your wedding day, because, to me, wedding photography is much more than turning up and taking a few great photos. Not mind-blowing, not terrible, just quite normal. But it was still very different to going on a date with a random bloke I met in a bar, or someone on Tinder. Both evenings ended at a civilised hour with a peck on the cheek — after which, Jo calls me with feedback — which is excruciating. As it happens, although I had a lovely time with both men, I felt pretty ambivalent about seeing them again, and told Jo as such.

Bessie Love (born Juanita Horton; September 10, 1898 – April 26, 1986) was an American-British actress who achieved prominence playing innocent, young girls and wholesome leading ladies in silent and early sound films. Her acting career spanned eight decades—from silent film to sound film, including theatre, radio, and television—and her performance in The Broadway Melody (1929) earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress.
Love was born Juanita Horton in Midland, Texas, to John Cross Horton and Emma Jane Horton ( Savage). Her father was a cowboy and bartender, while her mother worked in and managed restaurants. She attended school in Midland until she was in the eighth grade, when her family moved to Arizona, New Mexico, and then to California, where they settled in Hollywood. When in Hollywood, her father became a chiropractor, and her mother worked at the Jantzen's Knitwear and Bathing Suits factory.
In June 1915, while a student at Los Angeles High School, Horton went to the set of a film to meet with actor Tom Mix, who had recommended that she visit him if she wanted to "get into pictures". However, when Mix was unavailable, she was advised to meet with pioneering film director D. W. Griffith, who put her under personal contract. When it was decided that her given name was too long for theater marquees and too difficult to pronounce, Griffith's associate Frank Woods gave Horton the stage name Bessie Love: "Bessie, because any child can pronounce it. And Love, because we want everyone to love her!" Love dropped out of high school to pursue her film career, but she completed her diploma in 1919.
Griffith gave her a small role in his Intolerance (1916). Although Intolerance was her first performance to be filmed, it was her ninth film to be released. The first films Love made were with Griffith's Fine Arts company, yet Intolerance was the only film that he formally directed.
Her "first role of importance" —in the second of her films to be released—was in The Flying Torpedo (1916). She later appeared opposite William S. Hart in The Aryan and with Douglas Fairbanks in The Good Bad-Man, Reggie Mixes In, and The Mystery of the Leaping Fish (all 1916). This string of appearances and supporting roles led to her first starring role, in A Sister of Six (1916). In her early career, she was likened to Mary Pickford, and was called "Our Mary" by Griffith.
As her roles got larger, her popularity gradually grew. In early 1918, Love left Fine Arts for a better contract with Pathé.[ After the Pathé films were unsuccessful, she signed a nine-film contract with Vitagraph later that year, all of which were directed by David Smith. Her performances often received positive reviews, but her films often were shown at smaller movie theaters, which impacted the growth of her career.
Upon the completion of her Vitagraph contract, Love became a free agent. She took an active role in the management of her career, and was represented by Gerald C. Duffy, the former editor of Picture-Play Magazine.
Love sought roles that were different from the little girls she had portrayed earlier in her career when under contract to studios. She played Asian women in The Vermilion Pencil (1922) and The Purple Dawn (1923); a drug-addicted mother in Human Wreckage (1923); a woman accused of murder in The Woman on the Jury (1924); an underworld flapper in Those Who Dance (1924); and versions of her real-life self in Night Life in Hollywood (1922), Souls for Sale (1923), and Mary of the Movies (1923).
As a film star, she was expected to entertain studio executives at parties, so she learned to sing, dance, and play the ukulele. She gradually honed these skills and later performed them onscreen and on the stage. Because of her performance in The King on Main Street (1925), Love is credited with being the first person to dance the Charleston on film, popularizing it in the United States. Her technique was documented in instructional guides, including a series of photographs by Edward Steichen. She subsequently performed the dance the following year in The Song and Dance Man.
In 1925, she starred in The Lost World, a science fiction adventure based on the novel of the same name by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In 1927, she appeared in the successful Dress Parade, and was so impressed by her experiences on location that she wrote the unpublished novel Military Mary. A year later, she starred in The Matinee Idol, a romantic comedy directed by a young Frank Capra. Despite these successes, Love's career was on the decline. She lived frugally so that she could afford lessons in singing and dancing.
Love toured with a musical revue for sixteen weeks, which was so physically demanding that she broke a rib. The experience she gained on the vaudeville stage singing and dancing in three performances a day prepared her for the introduction of sound films. She appeared in the successful sound musical short film The Swell Head in early 1928, and was signed to MGM later that year.
In 1929, she appeared in her first feature-length sound film, the musical The Broadway Melody. Her performance earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and the success of the film resulted in a five-year contract with MGM and an increase in her weekly salary from US$500 to $3,000 (equivalent to $45,000 in 2019)—$1,000 more than her male co-star Charles King.
She appeared in several other early musicals, including 1929's The Hollywood Revue of 1929 and 1930's Chasing Rainbows, Good News, and They Learned About Women. Her success in these musicals earned her the title "the screen's first musical comedy star."
However, the popularity of musical films waned, again putting her career in decline. Love is quoted as saying of her career: "I guess I'm through. They don't seem to want me any more." She shifted focus to her personal life, marrying in December 1929.
She semi-retired from films, and traveled with a musical revue that included clips from her films The Broadway Melody, The Hollywood Revue, and Chasing Rainbows. While on tour, she learned she was pregnant with her daughter, who was born in 1932. Love stopped her stage work to raise her daughter. In 1935, Love moved to England, briefly returning to the United States in 1936 to obtain a divorce.
During World War II in Britain, when it was difficult to find employment as an actress, Love worked as the script supervisor on the film drama San Demetrio London (1943). She also worked for the American Red Cross.
After the war, Love began acting again, this time primarily in the theater and on BBC Radio as a member of their Drama Repertory Company; she also played small roles in British films, often as an American tourist. Stage work included such productions as Love in Idleness (1944) and Born Yesterday (1947). She wrote and performed in The Homecoming, a semiautobiographical play, which opened in Perth, Scotland in 1958. Film work included The Barefoot Contessa (1954) with Humphrey Bogart, and Ealing Studios' Nowhere to Go (1958), and she had supporting roles in The Greengage Summer (1961) starring Kenneth More, the James Bond thriller On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969), and John Schlesinger's Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971). In addition to playing the mother of Vanessa Redgrave's titular character in Isadora (1968), Love also served as dialect coach to the actress.
When television became popular, Love appeared in dozens of episodes of British television shows in the 1950s, '60s, and '70s. In October 1963, she became the subject of This Is Your Life when host Eamonn Andrews surprised her at the stage door of Never Too Late after its London opening. Guests included London Scrapbook director Derrick De Marney, her Forget Me Not (1922) co-star Gareth Hughes, actor Percy Marmont, her friend and Those Who Dance (1924) co-star Blanche Sweet, and her daughter Patricia.
Love appeared in John Osborne's play West of Suez (1971), and as "Aunt Pittypat" in a large-scale musical version of Gone with the Wind (1972). She also played Maud Cunard in the TV miniseries Edward & Mrs. Simpson in 1978. Her film work continued in the 1980s with roles in Ragtime (1981), Reds (1981), Lady Chatterley's Lover (1981), and—her final film—The Hunger (1983).
Love married agent William Hawks at St. James' Episcopal Church in South Pasadena, California on December 27, 1929. Mary Astor (Hawks's sister-in-law), Carmel Myers, and Norma Shearer were among her bridesmaids, with Irving Thalberg and Hawks's brother Howard serving as ushers. Following their wedding, the couple lived at the Havenhurst Apartments in Hollywood, and their only child, Patricia, was born in 1932. Four years later, the couple divorced.
Love moved to England with her daughter in 1935, a year before her divorce was final. Her life in England kept her out of the eye of her American fans, which resulted in the American press erroneously reporting her as dead multiple times. Love became a British subject in the late 1960s.
Love was a Christian Scientist.
After several years of declining health, Love died at the Mount Vernon Hospital in Northwood, London from natural causes on April 26, 1986. Her ashes are interred at Breakspear Crematorium in Ruislip, Hillingdon, England.
Cartoonist Alex Gard created a caricature of Love for Sardi's, the famed restaurant in Manhattan's Theater District. It is now part of the Billy Rose Theatre Division of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. Portraits of Love are also in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. and the National Portrait Gallery in London.
Love periodically was interviewed by film historians, and was featured in the television documentary series The Hollywood Greats (1978) and Hollywood: A Celebration of the American Silent Film (1980), both about early filmmaking in Hollywood. She also loaned materials from her personal collection to museums. In 1962, she began contributing articles about her experiences to The Christian Science Monitor. In 1977, she published an autobiography entitled From Hollywood with Love.
For her contributions to the motion picture industry, Love was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 at 6777 Hollywood Boulevard.

Hi! My name is Chris, I am a qualified, West Midlands based wedding photographer but happy to travel anywhere. My style and aim is to capture 3 things at your wedding emotion, composition and beautiful light. It’s always a bit odd writing about yourself but since I’m probably the one non-guest at your wedding that you’ll spend the most time with, you will want to get to know me a bit better and how I approach things, and why I’d be a good fit for your wedding day, because, to me, wedding photography is much more than turning up and taking a few great photos.  photographer wedding london

Best of 2016 Wedding Photographers West Midlands
Highlights from 2016 | Weddings Photographers West Midlands
The start of 2016 was absolutely fantastic for us, with the year continuing in wonderful style from August onwards. Working at venues we've been to many times, and others that we hadn't had the pleasure of for some time, the year really did flow wonderfully!   It's always quite bizarre seeing patterns from over the years, and one that always makes us smile is how you can wait years to return to a venue...only to be there almost immediately afterwards...admittedly, it's not normally the very next day! That was how things were for us however with Hannah + Nathan and Shelley + Alan's weddings at Moor Hall.
All weddings are special to us but sometimes they come with a little bit of personal pleasure, as was today’s wedding of Hannah & Nathan.  The reason? They were to be married by a great personal friend of both themselves and me – Father Carl Ramsay of St. Michaels Pelsall.  The reception at Moor Hall saw us all party together.
Following on from Hannah + Nathan's wedding, it was back to Moor Hall for the wedding of Shelley and Alan who had completely transformed the ceremony room into their own fairytale dream – absolutely beautiful. Our day started with their preparations, Stephen joining Shelley and her MUA Katy Bird, whilst I joined Alan & the guys as they donned their outfits from Dapper Dan.  The ceremony room had been transformed into a fairytale dream by Divine Décor and Marguerites Florist, the strings of Enigma completed the scene.
The Wedding Industry is massive but also has many small close knit circles where our colleagues in various trades from florists to cars to dresses are also our friends.  This friendship becomes very special when one of them asks you to provide your services for their own family wedding.  It was my immense pleasure to photograph the wedding of Gemma and Will in August at Lichfield Register Office. Lynne of Fine Flowers is Gemma’s Mom.
The next weekend saw a double-header for us at Barry James, with myself and Stephen both independently covering weddings!
My wedding took us to one of my favourite combinations St Chads Church in Lichfield and Hawkesyard Estate for Helen + Robert's wedding, so many opportunities for fine photography.  My biggest memory of the day will be how cool, calm and collected the bride Helen and her five bridesmaids were during the mornings preparations…well done girls!
Meanwhile, Stephen was at the stunning Calderfields in Walsall for the wedding of Lucy + Ant...and I think it's safe to say they had a fabulous time!
From the double-header three days before, my next weeking The Moat House in Acton Trussell for the wedding of Mary + Terry...a stunning intimate wedding in the beautiful Colin Lewis Suite.
For the second time in a week for me on a midweek wedding at the fabulous Moat House, and what a glorious day for the marriage of Amy & Craig.  All of the couples plan came to fruition on this Thursday afternoon.
From two weddings at The Moat House, it was back closer to home for us for Connie & Chris' wedding. Heavy rain showers were forecast for the whole of the day, and they arrived, timings however worked in our favour for the wedding of Connie & Chris at St Marks Shelfield and Fairlawns.  Every planned outdoor shot was completed – needed to say a few thank yous in our prayers that night!
Always seems unfair when we have been enjoying glorious weather and then a front moves in to try to attempt to spoil a couples big day as it did today for the wedding of Jemma and Derren at St Lukes Cannock and The Moat House.  Happy to say the rain didn’t dampen their spirits and they were thoroughly determined to enjoy their special day.
To conclude the crazy month of August, and after a really horrible day weather wise on Saturday, I was relieved to see that today’s wedding of Natalie & Andrew at Oak Farm was not going to suffer.  As it was the threatened light showers did not arrive allowing everyone to enjoy the private grounds at this lovely venue in warm sunshine.
Every wedding is special to us but when we have known either the bride or groom since they were at school it just becomes that little bit more special.  That’s how it was for our first wedding of August at the beautiful Alrewas Hayes, for the wedding of Felicity & Rich……..and what a wonderful wedding it was too. A wedding that was one of those surreal moments when some of the people in front of the camera I have known for a long time, in fact my own son Stephen and his wife Emma who have been friends with the bride Felicity since school days were guests at the wedding with Emma being Matron of Honour – so no pressure on me then!
Lorraine & Jonny live in London but their wedding was to be at the beautiful Shropshire venue, Albright Hussey Manor Hotel.  They found us via a google search and fell in love with our images taken at this lovely venue.  Having photographed the couple here a few months ago for their pre wedding shoot I was really looking forward to being part of their special day.
Looking back through the year, it's clear Calderfields, Oak Farm and of course The Moat House were very popular venues for us yet again, with our next two weddings taking us to two of those venues...
Carol & Trevor's wedding was held at St Margarets Chapel Lane before the reception at Calderfields.
September concluded for us at Oak Farm, with Katie + Joe holding their ceremony at Christ Church Gentleshaw. A truly gorgeous day, with the late afternoon timings giving gorgeous golden light to their photographs...
October continued as a fabulously busy month for us, taking us from The Priory at Dudley, to Calderfields, to Walton-0n-the-Hill, back to The Moat House and to West Park in Wolverhampton. Here's a little look at what we got upto...
And so the year came to a close back where it started...The Moat House.
Andrea & James' Twixmas wedding at St James' Church and The Moat House was the perfect conclusion to a fabulous 28th year in this wonderful industry!
So that was 2016! What a year!
All I can say now is "thank you" to all of the couples who invited myself, Stephen and Stuart in to capture your memories...we certainly had a fabulous time with you all.
Let's see what 2017 has in store!
