Chapter 3 - WHO’s RYE?

“So, do you care to elaborate on that?”

Madge closes the door to her room, her hands on her hips and a huge smile cracking her face.

“On what? That you’re grounded for the next three months?” I reply, trying to keep my tone casual and nonchalant. I pick up a book she has laying on her bed. Pride and Prejudice. The cover is gorgeous with embossed flowers and vines, with golden undertones.

“This looks nice! What’s it about?” My enthusiasm sounds fake, but I go with it, even knowing full well that Madge is very much aware how much I dislike reading for fun.

“That one is pretty good. It’s about a poor huntress girl, who falls in love with a rich handsome baker, but keeps her feelings bottled up inside her until the very end.”

She tries to say with a straight face, but half way through her smile is already there, and by the end she is full out grinning.

“Can you believe she even has this best friend, Charlotte, and she keeps these feelings even from her best friend!”

I put the book down in a haste, as if by doing it all the confusing thoughts in my head would just disappear. I end up doing it with more force than I intended to.

“Calm down, Katniss! I was kidding. The book doesn’t have a huntress or a baker.”

I raise my eyes to her and try to keep my face completely neutral. 

“The rest is true though. You should totally read it some time. Might help you sort out your feelings… for Peeta.”

I guess we’re speaking openly now.

“What?” My voice is high and I cringe at how much I sound as one of those frilly girls from school. I purse my lips and focus on sounding natural again.  “I don't have feelings for Peeta Mellark.”

“Why did you mention him then?”

I let go a nervous laugh “I didn’t mention him, you did! “

“No, I didn't. I said you might be the baker's wife. You’re the one that assumed you married Peeta”. 

I stay silent. I did.
