Year 2090. Six years have passed since Salvation Day, when Palladions, with their majestic powers, emerged as the protectors of humanity, saving the five remaining Megalopolis and securing the future of the human species.

But nothing stays and the horizon always brings a new storm. These are dark times. Death, famine and desperation lurk around the streets of Megalopolis 9. The shield has lost thirty percent of its reach. The New Nature has learnt to create cuts in the energy channels that power the Beacon and the Palladions. A neverending horde of beasts siege the remains of the city, increasing the desperation among the population.

The responsibility of keeping the city afloat lies on the shoulders of Generals Nesbo and Terrassa, who have to resort to risky survival measures. Journeying outside of the city in search of food is the only thing that is keeping the population alive, but nothing seems enough. Fear opens its way through Megalopolis 9 like a great crack of faith that separate more and more the population from the Palladions. Snow covers the city with a heavy white mantle, invoking oblivion and nothingness.

"It's strange, don't you think?" Orpheus asked once.

They were sitting together under the tree Orpheus always went to play alone, and recently it was one of the few times Thanatos had free time between his duties, avoiding Palladion's wrath, and trying to keep a handle on the creature inside him that was more and more of a threat every month. The full moon seemed to strengthen it. The dark tower loomed on the horizon, loathing them from afar.

"Hm?"

"To think how everyone is so scared of dying. I can't relate."

Because your kind, Trickster, lives such short lives, and remember nothing of the last one. The last two of your lives, you were terrified.

He couldn't say that to Orpheus. He knows it wasn't something he'd understand.

"Most are." He said simply.

"You don't seem scared either, Than. Like me."

We are surrounded by death every day of our lives. We remember. We've already died twice. Once of old age, once by sacrifice. It is expected that we all will cross the Styx eventually.

"It's not something we are afraid of."

Orpheus politely ignored the slip of the tongue there.

"I've heard a lot of things about you."

Thanatos hummed in acknowledgment. There were many little rumors that swirled around him. How they used to not be able to speak, for their voice would kill. How calling him by name and not by his title was inviting death upon you. There were some older people who still stubbornly called them Ferryman instead of Pallbearer, but he can't fault them for that one. You go by one thing for two thousand or so years, it's difficult to make them change to something else, especially without the memories of old bodies and their preferences.

"Like what?"

"How you're the Reaper's favorite and it won't touch you. That you're older than all of us combined. You remember everything, even things that don't exist anymore."

"Hmph. Only some of that is true, Orpheus."

"Well?"

"We don't remember our deaths."

And his memories were a tricky thing. He did remember a lot of his past lives. It hurt, knowing how many friends they've technically outlived. How much he missed them. The first few years were always hard to transistion to the new body and new people here. He had the wisdom of thousands of years behind him and still had to go through the process of growing up. Dying constantly, especially if he wanted to relieve the pain of someone's last breaths. The curse of knowing they will outlive their friends and bury them again and again and again.

"And why not?"

"We just don't. Suppose it would be too much to bear after so long."

Their memories are immortal, but his body was not. The creature tightened its hold ever so slightly on his throat. He knows. He is only living on borrowed time. Though their first life was adept at magical theory, that was all it was.

"Death is my life. I am used to it."

You are so strong Orpheus, and so fragile. So short lived, like a candle in a downpour.

"Hmm."

Thanatos let the conversation fade into silence. Orpheus shifted to take his harp off his back, and began to idly pluck the strings.

"We are good friends, aren't we?"

"Of course, Than. Best friends, in fact."

I apologize for the burden I am about to place on you. But there is no more options for me.

"If I asked for a favor, one that I entrust to you alone, you'd do it, no matter what it is?"

"Of course."

"Thanks, Orphy."

He could see Orpheus wanted to ask, but decided against it, going back to strumming his harp. Soon, Thanatos knew. Soon.
