prefacing this with: i'm sorry to everyone but i am not terribly discerning nor am i generally listening to kpop for the rap verses. also im assuming this is idol kpop we r talking about specifically taeyong because i really like the way that he makes the words sound... does that make sense like he has a very specific tone and diction and i just think it's neat. i also always like to hear monsta x rap line and han and changbin in skz so i hope i like the cb! and im enamored with jurin from xg tbh

8) What's your favorite K-Pop fashion trend?

.... this is genuinely difficult because the fashion/styling of kpop in general is part of what got me into it in the first place, there is literally a certain je ne sais quoi about it as a whole that i love. like you can put together the most godawfully ugly outfit and put it on an idol at work and BAM. i suddenly see something fun about it and can appreciate it for what it is (usually) but actually i really like what i refer to as 'slutty business casual,' like blazers and slacks and button-ups but there's cutouts and lace-up details where there really shouldn't be etc etc (think the suits from libido onlyoneof and that one stage for tear drop sf9 where they're in purple or that one Very Tight white shirt that kai wore for a rover stage). also yes i am a fan of the y2k vibes a lot of ggs have been on lately if i have to pick out ONE specific trend piece i'll say i really did like those white boots with the lug soles that were popular the last few years! so much so that i got a pair for myself haha

Are you ready for a special Music Spotlight guest appearance? This week, we’re featuring popular new global girl group XG to celebrate the release of their second single “Mascara.” We caught up with the members to chat about their first comeback, their aesthetics and inspirations, and their favorite things about each other. Check out our full interview below!

Tell us a little about your new single “Mascara” and what you hope fans take away from it.

JURIN: I LOVE the song “MASCARA.” This song is all about “the bond between friends" and "solidarity," and gives you the confidence to value every moment, support each other and your friends, but be yourself and be positive! You can feel XG's vibe through this track!

COCONA: “MASCARA” to me is, in short, a strong and confident song. The lyric "Don't mess with my MASCARA" contains a strong message of confidence: "I won't let anyone make me cry.” I hope that through our performance as well as our music, everyone can feel more confident and stronger in themselves.

MAYA: MASCARA is a song encouraging people to realize their worth and regain confidence in themselves. We want to tell fans to always be themselves and have faith in their style! Don’t forget that whenever you need help, there are always people who will be there for you to help you get through the difficult times. There are so many hurdles and obstacles to work through, but believing in yourself and never giving up is the key!

Are there any women in particular that inspire you in the music industry?

CHISA: So many people inspire me, but Madonna, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga are artists who have inspired me since I was a child and continue to inspire me in music, fashion, and even lifestyle! I still remember listening to a lot of Madonna's songs in the car and vibing to them when I was 10 years old. I think that was one of the moments that led me to my dream of becoming an artist!

JURIN: When I was 13 years old, I started listening to music from the 90s and it inspired me. I listened to TLC, Destiny's Child, Aaliyah, and many others, but mainly female artists representing the 90s, I listened to them every day! It influenced my taste and style of how I dressed a lot back then and it made me think, "Someday I want to do this kind of music too," and I started my path to becoming an artist!

HARVEY: Doja Cat! Her confident and majestic performances always amaze me. I am always inspired by Doja Cat's stage performance, dancing, singing, and rapping.

COCONA: I have always admired Ms. Lauryn Hill since I was young and she is still an artist that inspires me a lot. I first fell in love with Lauryn Hill when I saw her perform in Sister Act. I think she is a unique and cool artist in all aspects, not only in her music but also in her live performance, aura, and style.

This is your first single following your debut—how was preparation different this time around and were there any lessons you learned from your debut?

COCONA: During the preparation period for “Tippy Toes,” because it was our debut, I remember that many things were new to me and there was so much I didn’t understand. Starting with the music video shoot, I think I was able to use my learnings and experiences from “Tippy Toes” to prepare for “MASCARA.” I can set specific goals for my daily rehearsals, now that I have a clearer idea of what I need to do. I get particularly nervous in front of the camera and my movements and facial expressions tend to be a little awkward. But after a lot of practicing, I’ve taken on board what I learned last time and I can show a more mature appearance in “MASCARA”! With the experience of “MASCARA,” I hope to continue to work hard, learn more and become even better!

CHISA: We had a lot to learn and take in during the preparation of our debut single "Tippy Toes," so this time we were able to practice more efficiently with clearer goals and it was a lot of fun! In "Tippy Toes" we prepared and expressed both our core music side and our cool side, but in "MASCARA" we were more conscious of delivering our power and energetic vibes!

Who and/or what influences your overall aesthetic—from your music to your style to your fashion sense?

CHISA: We listen to a variety of music regardless of genre, from R&B and Hip-Hop to Pop, Trap, and Soul. Also, our fashion and style are influenced by overseas artists, models, movies, and dramas that we watch! I look up to Rihanna and Gigi Hadid for fashion.

JURIN: I feel that we each have our styles, favorite artists, music, movie characters, and such, and we each know our style. I love 90s music and fashion, especially the street style, where I get my inspiration.

Your new single is called “Mascara,” but what are your favorite beauty items?

CHISA: I love my highlighter! It's my go-to item when I'm doing my makeup! I have all kinds of highlighters, but they all come in slightly different colors and pearls, so I use them for whatever mood I’m in that day! When I want to lift my mood, I put highlights on the tip of my nose and under my eyebrows as well!

HINATA: My latest favorite is my nightcap! I highly recommend wearing a nightcap when you go to bed because it makes your hair shiny and silky when you wake up in the morning.

JURIN: My favorite beauty item is eyelash serum! The title of our song is “MASCARA,” and the most important part of my makeup is my eyelashes and mascara! So I put extra effort into lash care to prevent my lashes from getting damaged! Every night before going to bed I always apply eyelash serum to make them stronger and longer.

HARVEY: I love mascara!! When I do my makeup, I always pay the most attention to my eyelashes! When I apply eye makeup, I lift my lashes with an eyelash curler before applying mascara, but even just applying mascara makes my eyes look more defined and changes the whole look! Mascara is a must-have to make my facial features stand out!

What are your favorite things about your fellow group members?

CHISA: What I love about all the members is how they are considerate of each other and that they laugh a lot! Hinata is so reliable and kind. She always helps me when I am assembling or carrying something. I love Jurin's taste in fashion and I think she’s the most fashionable one in XG! I love Harvey's reactions. Her smile makes everyone happy! Juria is always calm and comfortable with the members! Maya is the one who makes us laugh and gets excited when something funny happens, and makes the atmosphere more exciting and fun! I like Cocona's consistency with writing a diary. It inspires me.

HINATA: Cocona is good at seeing the best in others, and I appreciate her compliments all the time! Maya’s honest and playful personality is so cute! I love the way she lights up the room all the time! Juria is kind to everyone and makes me feel at ease when I am with her. Harvey is super cool when she’s performing, but off stage, she’s super funny and cute! She sometimes has a unique way of speaking and moving, and I like it. I like Jurin because she thinks really quickly and as a leader, she speaks up clearly for us. She has a different personality from me, but we get along very well! I like Chisa because she is really funny and always makes the members laugh! When Chisa and Maya are together, everything seems brighter.

JURIN: I like how talkative Cocona is. When we’re in a group, Cocona mostly just listens, but when we are alone, I’m the one that listens and Cocona is always talking by herself, which is so cute lol. I respect and love how Maya's always full of energy. I don't think it's that easy to stay cheerful and energetic at all times, so I know she's always looking around to see what's going on! I love Juria’s hard-working spirit, and seeing Juria working so hard makes me feel like I have to work hard too! I like Harvey’s amazing sense of humor, and even though she plays it cool, she and Chisa are the two funniest in XG! I love that Hinata laughs at everything! To the point where sometimes I wonder if she's forcing herself to laugh even though it's not that funny. But that only makes me want to make her laugh, even more, becoming more foolish around her. Chisa and I are similar in some ways and opposite in others, and I think we inspire each other! 

HARVEY: I can't wait for you all to get to know each girl’s personality! I like how Jurin has a gap when she's on stage mode, and not. When she is on, she is charismatic Jurin, but when she is off, she is as sweet as a kitten. I like Chisa because she is basically our sunshine and is super caring to all the members! I like Hinata because she is always kind and reliable! Juria is positive and super happy all the time! I like how Maya can be cute as a puppy and super cool when she speaks English! I like how Cocona is the most passionate one when it comes to dancing, and she knows how to show her skills!

JURIA: I like Chisa because she is our sunshine and she's super funny. Hinata because she is kind and cool. Jurin because she is stoic and serious about everything. I like Harvey because she is cute and kind and has an animal-like personality. Maya because she is bright and cheerful. And I like Cocona because she’s so cute and is everyone's little sister, but she sometimes expresses her mature opinions.

MAYA: I love Cocona because she always sees the best in people and she compliments the good points in each person. I like that Juria is a smiley person! Harvey is very tidy, so I love watching her organize her things! Jurin is a planner, so she likes to do everything as planned from start to finish! Such a great skill as a leader. I like Hinata because I can depend on her like an older sister. Chisa makes everyone laugh, has a positive mind, and is always up for a new challenge.

COCONA: I love how straightforward Maya is! I respect that she can express her opinions precisely. As for Juria, she is very considerate of others. She is kind and I love that she puts others first. As for Harvey, she can empathize with everyone. Although she has a strong mind of her own, she is considerate and values everyone’s opinions, which is what I love about her. As for Jurin, whenever I speak with her, there is always something new I’m learning or discovering from her. She often has a different perspective, which I think is great! I love talking to Hinata because she is a great listener. Like a big tree, she shines with such a warm aura. This is why I feel great after talking with her. I love Chisa because she spreads love and energy to everyone around. She is always happy regardless of the situation, making us feel good.

Q1: Tell us the meaning of your name!

Since the Ka in Karin has the meaning of ‘good’, “have the good things be like the woods” is what it seems to be for Karin. I wonder why it’s not ‘forest’ though (laughs). It seems like there was a problem in the stroke count.

Q2: What senior do you admire?

Former C-ute’s Suzuki Airi-san. Now she is shining with her solo activities, I think I also want to do things like that someday.

Q3: Who would you want to be reborn as?

I’d really want to be reborn as myself, I think I’d like to more so start over but, other than being reborn as myself, having the body of Sasaki Rikako-chan (Angerme). I’d want to be a person who can wear various clothing. Since I’m short there are a lot of clothes that don’t suit me, so Rikako-chan would be nice (laughs).

Q4: What are you the best at in Hello! Project?

Having a lot of makeup tools. I have a table that was originally a dining room table, it’s about completely filled with makeup tools (laughs). On a days I go outside, I carefully select which to use. Today, my outfit is orange-like so it was orange blush and orange lipstick, and I laid a gloss on top for shine, thinking about keeping things moisturized.

Q5: Tell us something amazing about Hello! Project!

At the summer Hello! Project concert, everyone sings songs; with the songs there are various formations, during the rehearsal we’re told “Go to your position over there,”, although there is about 50 members we all go to our position quickly without getting lost, I think it’s an amazing united force (laughs). I think there are more amazing groups but, witnessing it is something really amazing. Also when we dance to Morning Musume songs, Morning Musume will suggest “The fans get influenced like this, so it should be done like this,” we really think about our stages it feels.

Q6: Who would you want to be in a Hello! Project special unit with?

It’s a unit that has already been done but, since we haven’t really had activities, with Morning Musume ‘18’s Sato Masaki-chan as Jurin (Sato & Miyamoto Unit). Since the two of us make songs, I’d want to discuss and think about the lyrics and song.

Q7: Tell us a Juice=Juice song you like!

“Otona no Jijou”. I think that Tsunku-san wrote it with the feelings of an idol like “that’s it after all”, I really like the feeling of the melody. It was super perfect for the drama “Budokan” we starred in, a song that really pulls at your heart.

Q8: What is a Hello! Project song you like?

“Hare Ame Nochi Suki” (Morning Musume Sakuragumi). I’ve loved this song from long ago, the first time I was able to sing a solo I chose this song. It has a really ephemeral feel, Tsunku-san wrote it as song packed with the feelings of a girl who can’t be honest; there aren’t many other songs that feel like this so I love it.

Q9: What is the difference between current and previous Hello! Project?

Its big, after all, Tsunku-san’s songs aren’t all over the place. Tsunku-san’s EDM songs have been increasing but, more than that Juice=Juice’s “Vivid Midnight” has elements of K-POP, but I can also feel the Hello! Project-like lyrics added in. Incorporating the good parts from before, incorporating the current music feeling, both are good.

Q10: Other than yourself, who would you recommend as an oshi?

With viewpoint of liking Hello! Project, Angerme’s Wada Ayaka-san, perhaps. She is strongly sports-minded, she also feels like Hello! Project from long ago, and she feels like she is really pulling together everyone in the current Angerme. Also, during performances she has a sexy and wonderful feel, being herself, is something I’ve come to really like.

Q11: What do you want us to see most from yourself?

While performing a song I do it with feeling that I am the heroine, I want to communicate the song so I plan to do my best expressing it, I want you to see that. Also, Juice=Juice frolics around behind the member that’s singing quite a bit, to those who come to lives many times, I want you to also see that. Since, I’m pretty much bursting there (laughs).

Q12: What is work you want to challenge?

Everything comes with a bang but, now, since I’m doing my utmost best composing, not just making something, I’d like to talk to everyone about what I’m making. I’d like to have the opportunity to be able to talk to people about it. I want advice.

Q13: What do you want us to see most from Juice=Juice?

You can come to the lives many times as everyone does their best considering and making reflection notes. Also, since each song has a different color, we also try to change the atmosphere in a rolling way. Every hall concert tour we try to charm in a sexy way, since we’re also making those themes, it’d be nice if you’d come and see us including them.

Q14: What will you be doing in 20 years?

Singing and dancing, I want to do it with the feeling of being able to make everyone smile. I most have the feelings of wanting to sing, I don’t know what it will be at that time so, I’m doing my best now to make that possible (laughs). Also, I want to do anything after all. Of course I want to act, but I want to do activities where I can cheer everyone up I think.

Q15: Since it’s the 20th anniversary, tell us a secret!

Before I joined Hello! Project Eggs (Kenshuusei), when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade, I had serious period of aiming towards entertainers. Telling stories, they would post public videos on YouTube, I’m not on YouTube but I had a period of uploading to YouTube. At first it was a trio, during it became a duo, I went away and it became one person.

Q16: What do you want to be able to do after the 20th anniversary?

It’s something personal but, listening to more songs, I’m studying the chords more and more since I want to come to write wonderful songs.

Q17: What would you do if you weren’t an idol?

Since I’m an only child, when I was young my mother was super strict about studying. And, I’m not very smart, but I’m really good at memorization. Therefore, I thought I wanted to become pharmacist to make use of it; I think I would have become like that.

Q18: What are you most into right now?

I’m into composing desktop music songs on the electric guitar. I’m into things relating to composition. I use a small mini amp with the guitar, I practice solo and memorize chords. I think it’d be nice to show it off for a birthday event, I’m able to show off one song now to an extent, it’d be nice to be able to do a number of songs.

Q19: Who do you get along with in Hello! Project? Share with us an episode!

For Juice=Juice members, I recently went out to see a movie with Kanazawa Tomoko-chan. We went and saw “After The Rain”. I’m really sorry but, other than the Juice=Juice members I can’t say I get along well with anyone else. Probably if I give out a name, that person will think “Eh, we get along! Really!?” and I don’t want that to be said (laughs). But a girl I’m recently interested in, is Morning Musume ‘18’s Morito Chisaki-chan, man she’s cute! I came to like her, but I can only tell you that she is cute (laughs).

Q20: What is an idol to you?

I answered this when I did the drama “Budokan” but, I think idols are doing their best towards their dreams while getting cheered on. I also want to cheer for people, everyone has a lot of goals and dreams, in order to enhance myself towards that, I do my best. Those kinds of people really shine wonderfully, therefore I think that’s an idol. I like Matsuda Seiko-san but, while Matsuda Seiko-san got married, I think she is still an idol after all. She really conveys wanting to sing and go on tour even now. Therefore, I think it’s pursuing something like that.

This is a story of long ago. No, I do not know how long – what? No, I was not alive then. This is the long ago. There were dragons then. Yes, yes, I know there are dragons now but these ones were old and terrible and the story is not about them after all. It is not wise to tell stories about old dragons in case they might be listening. No, your grandmother is not a dragon. Who told you – never mind, never mind.

Stories grow in the telling, and never in ways you can predict. But this: this is a story of the long ago when the cities and towns of men – and there were far fewer cities back then, with towns huddled about them for protection – and they were small fitful sparks that burned against a sea of darkness and change. Not all the Between-folk had gone Between yet and – oh, yes. Well, of course there were monsters. What would any self-respecting story be if it didn’t have at least one monster in it? In those days there were more monsters than their were heroes to slay them.

Perhaps it is true, as some have said, that any time that needs heroes is a terrible one. I couldn’t say. But there were terrible monsters, as I have said, and – no, your Aunt Jurin is not a hero. Having sense enough to marry a Minotaur is just having good sense. Heroes don’t have that, or there wouldn’t be so many famous last stands. Every song about a hero becomes a sad song in the end. They don’t sing sad songs about your Aunt Jurin. Well You’re a little young to heard the songs they sing. But they’re not sad ones.

Now, then. In this long ago time, there lived a young man named Toth. Yes, I know that’ s your name. I was there when you were given your birth-name name. And if you keep interrupting. I’ll be giving your your death-name in about two minutes. Now where were we? No, don’t remind me. Toth. Even then, it was a very plain name and Toth was a very plan sort. Young, but not too young. Friendly, but not too friendly. He was kind, though never to the point of foolishness. Everyone liked Toth, but no one thought too much of him. Certainly, they never thought he could be a hero. And he was not, for all that he had a secret. Oh, all heroes have secrets. Why do you think they travel so far if not to escape their secret?

Toth was a magician who had no wish to learn magic. He could call the seasons out of order, learn the true name of even those things without names. But while his wish was not to be a magician, his desire was another thing entirely. He fell in love, which was uncommon in those days. Oh, people married but it was all arranged. There simply was not the time – and it was not safe – to fall in love. If Toth had been a magician, this would of course have never happened. One cannot be a magician and love anything more than the magic. But even so, he fell in love and tried to hide it even more than he hid his magic.

He tried too hard, as many are wont to do. People began to wonder why Toth was so ordinary, you see. The effort he had taken to be so was noticed, though not yet understood. But people began to notice other things. How nothing ever went wrong for Toth, not even once. So they called for a mage-seeker to come to their town. Oh, they had mage-seekers then, but they were not the kind we have now. They sought to help mages.

The mage-seeker ran away.  Of course no one knew Toth was the cause of that, not then,  but everyone began to wonder about each other. What kind of magician would hide their magic, they wondered. The drought of the last year was brought up in many conversations, though not the plenty of the two years prior to that. Every ache and pain was discoursed at length and trust was in even shorter supply than truth. And in time, Toth’s loved asked if Toth was the magician. And Toth told him yes, because Toth was in love but his loved – well, he smiled and demanded things from Toth. Some of them Toth had never even heard of, so terrible were they. No. Not your brother. Well. Probably not.

Toth refused and fled the town. Yes, I know the hunt can send out dogs on those who run. In those days their hunts could send out cats as well but everyone assumed Toth had fled with magic and set no animals upon him. There are many stories told about Toth after that, but the only one that everyone agrees is true is that he met a dragon, and in the due course of time she bore him a son. That Toth dared to love again. Well. What magician has loved once, let alone twice? He trusted her, and this was a very brave thing. Whether she broke the trust, who can say?

She died before Toth did and he made the rainbow to honour her. It was his only act of magic. Oh, of course. I imagine there were others. Spells to silence young children would be a fine start. But this magic was real the way others were not, and it lasted in ways that magic cannot last. All magic is tricks in the end, after all. But not that spell.

Did he love again? Well, some say the mage-seeker sought him out and they lived together in the fullness of time but I distrust stories that must have happy endings. Perhaps he died, or did not,  for who can say with magicians? But his son never died and learned enough from his father to fall in love as well.

And that is why, every generation, one child is named Toth in our family. And if I ever hear you bellyaching about your name again, I will thrash you so hard that you’ll wish you had scales!
