It felt good.

( sweat clung to his cheeks. his spine coiled as he bared his teeth and ran straight for it: the face like a bull’s eye, screaming red. yes, he wanted it. vaguely, he heard yelling. then there were bodies on bodies on bodies and raw flesh scraped under his fingernails and blood pooling beneath their feet. his ears rung. there was nothing. there was everything. all at once – he felt like he was flying, and no one could’ve held him down by his ankles – fingers grasping tightly onto the hollow bone )

Some of his knuckles were split. Jaehyun dug his fists into the boy’s nose and didn’t stop until he heard the satisfactory fragmenting of splintered marrow. Then there were the vessels: rupturing under the pressure, spurting from his nostrils. His knees realigned his ribcage, shoving his sternum under his chest and if time stopped for long enough he could feel the frail beating of the heart against his skin. All this time hardly a sound uttered from the boy’s mouth, only blood covering his entire face and dripping down his clothes.

The adrenaline was addicting. Jaehyun needed more – he needed someone who would fight back, not some lifeless ragdoll – and he threw the body aside (it landed with a sickly thud: the boy was a breadth of an inch away from death), and he cocked his head back, and he laughed. It was a guttural sound, vibrating from the box in his throat and his Adam’s Apple bobbed up, bobbed down in a delicate silhouette against the light.

“Y’all fuckers,” he snarled, “are bitches.”

Then there were the war cries: then there was the anger. And after that, there was only the taste of metal on his tongue and he swallowed it like it was his very last meal.

4:52AM.

It was over.

His head had been cracked wide open and blood poured freely down his face. Jaehyun licked his lips and used his sleeve to wipe some of the viscera that had stained his cheeks: someone had brought a knife and, in an act of desperation and panic, swung it left and right though the number of bodies there had been meant that no matter which way the guy turned someone would get cut. And someone did. Nearly disemboweled, in fact; a flap of his stomach had been sliced open and his intestines had begun to spill out but he had hastily collected it into his arms and tried to leave – but the crowd had begun to move so he got shoved and the rest of his organs just splattered on the floor.

Jaehyun happened to be in front of him and so caught most of the splash, but at that point he too was blinded by hunger for such gore.

He limped his way back to his apartment in the darkness. The wind blew fiercely and his ears stung: a dull ache had begun to settle at the nape of his neck and it throbbed uncomfortably every time he swallowed. Some shithead had brought bats and he had gotten clocked some many times too often. Every now and then he swayed – and his vision blurred – and he had to stop before he fell over.

By then he could only see a church, by the horizon. Jaehyun dragged himself, step by step, slowly and gradually until finally his hands were just short of touching the doorknob – before his body rejected the last spurt of energy and he collapsed on the floor. He breathed heavily, shaking all around, clad in nothing but a shirt and some torn pants in the dead of winter. His hair was in his eyes. He needed to go somewhere else, somewhere that was not the front door – and with a loud grunt Jaehyun thrust himself off the ground, still panting.

5:39AM.

Dawn was breaking.
