With Ivy Leaguers finally getting into the action, the full slate of NCAA teams have now officially started their seasons, so we’re in full swing here, folks. Speaking of the college game, some interesting news has come out on the recruiting front for both men and women in the NCAA wheelhouse that could drastically change the landscape of what some believe is a crazy process right now. Over in major junior, the annual CHL-Russia series is about to begin, with WHL Kamloops hosting Game 1 of the six-game showdown next Monday. I’ll be at the Oshawa installment the week after that for some live scouting. In the meantime, let’s take a look at some of the hottest prospects around the hockey world right now.

Alexander Alexeyev, D, Red Deer Rebels (WHL): The league’s player of the week, Alexeyev is a Washington Capitals first-rounder who plays a great two-way game, complete with size and skating. At his best, he can control the play and right now his 20 points through 15 games ties him for tops among defensemen in the league. NHL arrival: 2020-21

Bobby Brink, C, Sioux City Musketeers (USHL): A nifty offensive player who stood out last year as a youngster with Minnetonka high school in Minnesota, Brink is now laying waste to the USHL as a member of the Musketeers. The University of Denver commit and 2019 draft prospect is tied for third in league scoring with 15 points in 10 games. NHL arrival: 2022-23

K’Andre Miller, D, University of Wisconsin Badgers (BigTen): One of the most anticipated freshmen of the NCAA campaign, Miller has certainly lived up to that promise early on. The New York Rangers first-rounder has seven points in six games and most interestingly, the 4-2 Badgers haven’t lost when the two-way D-man gets on the scoresheet. NHL arrival: 2020-21

Joe Veleno, C, Drummondville Voltigeurs (QMJHL): Detroit got a bargain when Veleno slipped to the end of the 2018 first round and the Red Wings are already seeing the benefits of that pick. Veleno has 21 points in 14 games and most impressively, the quick pivot counts three shorthanded goals in that total. NHL arrival: 2020-21

Kirill Marchenko, RW, SKA-1946 (Rus.): A big dude with great hands, Marchenko has eight points in his past five games, and 16 in 11 overall. This is his first year with St. Petersburg’s junior team after developing in Yugry’s system and the Columbus Blue Jackets pick will be one to watch at Russia’s world junior camp. NHL arrival: 2021-22

Henrik Borgstrom, C, Springfield Thunderbirds (AHL): His cut from the Florida Panthers was a surprise, but the exciting Finn has taken the demotion the right way by blowing up the American League. Borgstrom is tied for the rookie scoring lead with 11 points in seven games. The gamebreaking ability is obvious, but Borgstrom is also going to the net. NHL arrival: 2019-20

Adam Fox, D, Harvard Crimson (ECAC): Thanks to the Dougie Hamilton trade, Fox’s NHL rights currently belong to the Carolina Hurricanes and it will be interesting to see if he leaves school this spring. The talented offensive defenseman put up five points in his season debut for Harvard, though the Crimson lost 7-6 to Dartmouth. NHL arrival: 2020-21

Brandon Kruse, LW, Bowling Green Falcons (WCHA): Kruse became a bit of a folk hero in Ohio as a freshman and with 11 points in seven games this season, he’s keeping the good times rolling. The Falcons are hot and the Vegas Golden Knights pick has been a big driver for the offense. NHL arrival: 2022-23

Akil Thomas, C, Niagara IceDogs (OHL): Thomas is off to an excellent start with 25 points in 15 games for Niagara. The Los Angeles Kings pick is a great playmaker with a sweet set of hands and nice speed. He’s winning his faceoffs and contributing in all situations. Amazing that he slipped to the second round in 2018. NHL arrival: 2020-21

Trent Miner, G, Vancouver Giants (WHL): What fascinates me about Miner is how good he is at using his paddle to make saves or pokechecks. The 2019 draft prospect also has great lateral movement and that has led to some of the most gaudy stats in the ‘Dub’ so far. Miner is boasting a WHL-best 1.41 goals-against average and .953 save percentage. NHL arrival: 2023-24
