This Wednesday, 2 August, I'll have a table at Radio Boston Presents: Comics Culture. To whet your appetite for FanExpo Boston 4--6 August, WBUR, Boston's NPR station, features Boston University's chair of their Department of Visual Narrative Joel Christian Gill leading a panel of local comics creators, including Colleen AF Venable, Raúl The Third, Dan Mazur, and Dave Ortega. The panel begins at 6:30 PM. Doors open at 5:30, whereupon you will find in the lobby myself as Drowned Town Press, as well as Sam Cleggett, Zach Clemente, Ansis Puriņš, and Catalina Rufín. The program runs until 8 PM. Ticket prices are $15 General Seating, $25 Premiere seating, and $5 for students. You can pre-purchase tickets here. WBUR CitySpace at Lavine Broadcast Center is at 890 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA, in the middle of the campus. While there are several parking lots nearby (some of which may only be for BU affiliates), you can also get there on the MBTA Green Line B branch (closest stop Babcock Street) and via MBTA buses #57, #47, and CT2. (Please note that the Green Line currently has service advisories of delays due to current speed restrictions.)

Review 523: Jack The Whipper (with special guest Ses Carny)
Jack The Whipper and Ses Carny
Presented by: WBUR City Space
Most of you have met Jacques Ze Whipper on TikTok. Well, to paraphrase a golden oldie song we’ve seen him through fire we’ve seen him in rain. We’ve seen him do tricks that we thought would never end. Yet one of our favorite ways to catch his French whipping action is at WBUR’s City Space digitally. With his friend and fellow performer Ses Carny, they make a comedy duo unlike anything we’ve ever witnessed.
Tumblr media
As much as we know Jack for his stunts and whipping abilities we should also consider him a full-time comedian. In effect, a whip artist is a stand-up comedian with a weapon in their hand. A circus artist’s skill with “patter” (aka the whole spiel they’re saying while tricks are happening) is almost as if not more important than their other skills. If the audience is not laughing with you or cheering you on at the appropriate moment then the stunt can go flat. Or if the audience is too worried about you hurting yourself, they will be too busy flinching to enjoy the trick. So a well-crafted set (like Jacques’) becomes a thing of beauty. It is road-tested in front of audiences of all shapes and sizes. That’s why no matter how many times we’ve seen this act we still laugh out loud. On top of being super skilled, he’s comedy gold.
If you want to see a prime example of someone who can spit jokes just as deftly as he can spit fire you have Ses Carny. Ses can nail a spike in his head (this is not one of his usual tricks) and not lose the crowd. When he and Jack are working together it is so weird that he becomes the straight man of the two. We’ve had the pleasure of seeing him perform with his wife Crimson Locksley and not only can he hold the stage on his own he is not the straight man of the two. We understand that his fire-eating may be a bit much for WBUR Cityspace so we don’t get to see him dancing with torches to any of Jack’s songs like we see on YouTube. This is why we’re glad that he and Jack added in a couple of tricks in the second show where Ses gets to be more than just on the receiving end of the whip. In the second show, they added some extra bits that will probably be in upcoming shows headed to a town near you, It was amazing to see him try a whip stunt of his own (no spoilers see it for yourself.)
Tumblr media
We really like the new material. We wish that we could tell you all about it. But we will say that balloons were still involved (Dana was triggered). There were also new stunts, new jokes, and a feeling that Jack wanted us to get to know him and his life better. We definitely got to hear more about Scipio and his family.
The new show felt like the next evolution of the Secret Show. As if this show was hiding under the surface of the Secret Show just waiting to be born. We can’t wait to see them again in-person and see what else they have to work with.

Everyone loves climate activism when it's on the screen. Everyone loves the idea of heroism for a collective future as long as it's convenient. The easy roads are behind us now - it's past time to make noise.
On Thursday February 1st, climate activists from Extinction Rebellion Boston (XR) disrupted a Q&A session with Climate Chief Melissa Hoffer, which took place after a screening of the documentary "Inundation District". The documentary is a frank look at the future of the Seaport District of Boston, which is built at sea level in a flood zone, without zoning or other measures needed to withstand the rising sea level and more intense floods caused by climate change.
Disrupting the post-film discussion, one activist stood up from his seat in the audience and asked Climate Chief Hoffer what actions the Healey administration will be taking in response to the facts gleaned from the documentary the Climate Chief and activists had just watched together. Once the question was asked, other activists in the audience stood, revealing themselves to be wearing small banners with messages like, "2050 is too late" and "Chief Hoffer, Do Your Job." Meanwhile, another crowd of fellow activists stood outside the large windows of WBUR CitySpace holding banners reading, "No New Fossil Fuel Infrastructure".
Climate Chief Hoffer deflected the question, saying that "I can't think of a more robust strategy than we have right now for decarbonization." The representative from XR Boston reiterated our demand that the Healey administration ban new fossil fuel infrastructure, including airport expansions and new building gas connections. He emphasized that banning new fossil fuel infrastructure is a small first step to the necessary goal of zero carbon emissions by 2030. Hoffer refused to comment on the "net zero by 2030" state commitment, and activists continued to question her until moderators ended the panel.
How can "leaders" watch climate documentaries like Inundation District and completely miss the point? How can any of us ask them easy questions and pretend that we're doing everything we can do? We are in a climate emergency. We need immediate radical change. We need No New Fossil Fuel Infrastructure.

Ghaaliyian Soundtrack - Dulcimer
We love a good soundtrack and the region is heavily based on Arabic and Carribean cultures so I hope these snippets of music are a not so silent nod to them.
Right now, Evan Plays Dulcimer's cover of Around the Fire is currently what I have in mind for the opening track of my campaign. Introducing my players to the city not only with words to better create the mental image. The hammered dulcimer is a middle eastern string instrument that's been around since like 1000 AD lol
I also imagine this segment of Fabiola Mendez's preformance on WBUR CitySpace as a light background tune around a market center or port. Fabiola plays the puerto rican cuatro, another stringed instrument however this one is like a mandolin or uke. The modern version has 5 doubled strings, making a total of 10, but no one wanted to change the original name so it's still called a cuatro

Katie was the first to join the elite SEVEN COPY CLUB, thus upgrading to the most comfortable seat next to me at the signing table, where we chatted throughout evening. She is a former selectperson from Acton Massachusetts and a complete delight, and I enjoyed spending time with her and everyone getting their books signed after my event with @jendeaderick last night at @wburcityspace. Special thanks to her husband Michael for handing out the corgis so expertly. If you want to join the SEVEN COPY CLUB, go to johnodgman.com/tour to find out how. Preview: 2022 IFFBoston
It is now my favorite time of year in Boston! My favorite film festival in Boston, in Massachusetts and possibly the world is Independent Film Festival Boston (read my coverage here).  I have a special place for this festival: in 2014 my documentary Life on the V: The Story of V66 had its World Premiere at the festival, and in 2015 I was on the Documentary Jury. Due to the pandemic, the scheduled 2020 festival in April 2020 was canceled. In 2021 the festival came back as a virtual festival. Now for 2022, the festival is back as an in-person film festival at Somerville Theatre (Somerville), Brattle Theatre (Cambridge), Coolidge Corner Theatre (Brookline) and WBUR Cityspace (Boston). This year’s IFFBoston takes place Wed. April 27 to Wed. May 4, 2022.
Tumblr media
Here are the films on my radar for this year’s fest:
Wed. 4/27/22:
Opening Night Film is Emily The Criminal with Aubrey Plaza. She’s always good and this thriller made a splash at Sundance!
Thurs. 4/28/22:
We Feed People is the new documentary from Ron Howard. I was a huge fan of his doc The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - The Touring Years, so color me curious here. The Mojo Manifesto: The Life and Times of Mojo Nixon is a doc about the funny cowpunk musician Mojo Nixon (known for “Don Henley Must Die” and “Debbie Gibson is Pregnant with my Two-Headed Love Child”). I’m curious about this one mainly because I haven’t heard much from Nixon since the 90s. Both Sides of the Blade is the new one from Clair Denis with Juliette Binoche and Vincent London.
Fri. 4/29/22:
Resurrection is a disturbing drama with Rebecca Hall and Tim Roth, both always reliable. The documentary The Pez Outlaw looks at a notorious seller of pez collectibles. Co-directed by Bryan Storkel, who did Fight Church, which played at IFFBoston in 2014 (one of the docs the year I was there with my V66 doc). Speaking of docs, Dio: Dreams Never Die profiles legendary metal singer Ronnie James Dio. I hope to be headbanging to Dio and Black Sabbath by the end of it! Cha Cha Real Smooth is a post-college “now what?” comedy with a solid cast.
Sat. 4/30/22:
The Centerpiece Narrative Film is the SXSW hit I Love My Dad, where Patton Oswalt catfishes his estranged son in order to keep in touch with him. The thriller God’s Country stars the always excellent Thandiwe Newton. Anonymous Club is an intimate doc on one of my favorite singer-songwriters of the last decade Courtney Barnett (read my coverage of her here).
Sun. 5/1/22:
Zhang Yimou is one of the most exciting filmmakers around. Even when his films are disappointing, there is still something visually breathtaking and thought-provoking. His new one One Second is a period film about the power of film!
Mon. 5/2/22:
Good Luck to You, Leo Grande stars Emma Thompson as an older woman who tries to get her groove back.
Tues. 5/3/22:
The doc The Janes looks at a group of Chicago women pre-Roe v. Wade who created an underground service for women seeking safe, affordable and illegal abortions.
Wed. 5/4/22:
The Closing Night Film is Marcel The Shell with Shoes On, the big screen feature-length debut of the animated character voiced by Jenny Slate.
In addition to all of the feature films and feature documentaries, the festival also has several short films (narrative, documentary, and student) programmed as well.
