What Happened to Nigeria's Brightest Kids from 2009?
In 2009, a list of Nigeria’s smartest teenagers dropped, and it was a big deal. The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) decided to put the spotlight on 100 secondary school kids who absolutely crushed their exams, turning them into minor celebrities overnight. But as we all know, fifteen years is a long time. So, where are these brainiacs now? 2009: The Year of the Overachiever Back in the…

Abia guber: Why Appeal Court ruling can’t stand – Emenike, APC
THE Abia State Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2023 poll, High Chief Ikechi Emenike, and the APC have picked holes in the Saturday verdict of the Court of Appeal, which affirmed the election of Dr. Alex Otti of the Labour Party, LP. Emenike and Abia APC have vowed to go to the apex court “in search of justice.” The Abia State APC Chairman, Dr. Kingsley Ononogbu, in a statement, said, “the party’s Governorship Appeal: High Chief Ikechi Emenike vs. INEC & 6ors had become another victim of the Nigeria judicial abracadabra.” Ononugbo continued: “The court of appeal Lagos division dismissed our Appeal against the unconstitutional declaration of Alex Otti as the governor of Abia State in the March 18 General Election.” He said APC and Ikechi’s team of lawyers became apprehensive when 8pm the night before the ruling news started flying that judgement would be delivered the following day. “When our Lead Counsel, Tochukwu Maduka, SAN, contacted the deputy registrar, court of appeal Lagos, he apologized and sent a hearing notice of the day’s sitting at about 9am. It is unfortunate that democracy and rule of law have been reduced to this pitiable level in our dear county. In the circumstance, we will not relent. “We urge our members to keep calm as we are prepared to take steps and approach the Apex Court in the land for a final review of this obvious truncation of justice for curious reasons. We are aware that the journey to freedom has never been an easy one. We urge everyone to continue to remember our leader, High Chief Ikechi Emenike, the last man standing, in our prayers.” A lawyer, Mr. Nnamdi Adiele, who said he was in the Lagos division of the Court of Appeal to witness the judgment, said: “Justice Habeeb Abiru abandoned the law, shunned justice, and embarked on a voyage of political fallacies and personal barb.” He expressed worries about “the fate of Nigeria if clear constitutional provisions are so regrettably treated.” Another lawyer, Ken Dike, wondered why qualification criteria would be used to remove the governors of Plateau and Kano states as well as the Abia Central Senator, among others, but were ignored in the case of Otti, and “Party waiver will be made to be superior to both the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act.” He said that these “strange pronouncements need to be tested at the Supreme Court.” An APC stalwart, Mr. Kingsley Ngwaje, who was in court for the verdict, said: “Where was Justice Abiru when some years ago in the 2008 Beijing, China Olympics Games, Nigeria’s female 100 metres relay team, who came fourth in the race, were upgraded to a silver medal because the countries that came first and second, respectively, were disqualified on accounts of doping infractions? “Earlier, Nigeria’s Sunday Bada and his team mates, who won the bronze medal in the 100 meters 4×4 relay during the 2000 Sydney Olympics, were moved up to the silver medal after the disqualification of the United States of America’s team because of a positive doping of two members of the US team. “Even locally, our examination bodies, both JAMB and WAEC, have had cause to cancel the results or withdraw the results of those found to have cheated during the examinations. In any competition, even if 10 people who are placed in front are not qualified, they will remain unqualified. Justice Abiru only succeeded in turning logic upside down,” he averred. Can I Be More Than The Person I Have Become?
Tumblr media
Here I am again. Once every few months, sometimes years I get that urge to put pen to paper or in this instance finger to keyboard.
When I was little reading my mom’s Jodi Picoult, Danielle Steele or Avon romance novels I felt inspired. I wanted to write a book people would cherish and love. Then I read Purple Hibiscus and then the doubts came.
Purple Hibiscus is one of my favorite books ever and the author Chimamanda is an inspiration to me. But the doubts came because I believed I could never write a book as amazing as Purple Hibiscus, that stirred so many emotions and feelings in me that with each rereading makes me discover something new. It didn’t help that Chimamada is that perfect Igbo first daughter who has a first degree and not one but 2 MA’s and speaks fluent Igbo.
My admiration for her was tinged with a lot of jealousy. I am an Igbo first daughter, that can barely speak/understand Igbo despite growing up in Nigeria most of my life, I only have a BA in Law, I failed spectacularly at a Masters programme that from the start I only applied to because I thought it was expected of me.
There are so many flaws in myself I could spend hours picking on but won’t for the sake of bringing down the mood of this article/opinion piece. Despite feeling I could never measure up to CNA I still chose literature as my elective in my GCSE’s and WAEC exams. Had an A for both and was the best student in class for the former. But I still felt like a fraud. I understand English, I speak it but the technical rules stump me sometimes. Like the semicolon… No matter how many times I can’t seem to retain when it applies. I suck at writing dialogue because I am always confused where to add the apostrophes and commas. Subject verb agreement, well I stumble my way through and hope for the best which has worked out okay so far.
I used to write in notebooks fervently in Secondary School. I would craft stories which would get passed around different students and their compliments and eagerness to read my words fueled me. I was going to be a writer maybe.. Get my first degree in Law then a Masters in Creative Writing. Maybe after becoming successful I’d be the next Michaela Coel adapting my work to the screen to great critical acclaim.
Well let’s just say reality hit hard, no punches pulled whatsoever. I left my sheltered Nigerian boarding school after graduation to go to the UK full time for my A Levels. First mistake was spending my years pocket money in under 3 months. Second mistake was essentially being mute for my first year of school. I have always been quite reserved and find it hard to talk to people. Going to a full boarding school meant I saw my classmates almost 24/7 so bonding and socialisation was inevitable. Well with A levels only having 3 subjects to study and it being a day school meant I could go a week without speaking to anyone except the lovely lunch ladies in the cafeteria.
If I am being honest I wasn’t used to interacting with white people and felt self conscious about my accent so it was a perfect storm.
Then the whopper…I have always had a complicated relationship with food. Since I was younger my weight has fluctuated heavily. It didn’t help that my mom was one of those slightly bigger women who decided to become a gym addict and drop all the weight. A lot of her insecurity from being bigger rubbed off on me, directly and indirectly.
Having your mom take you to exercise classes at 13 hurts. Having your mom be so happy to see you lose so much weight because the food at your boarding school sucked hurts. Having people complimenting your mum and asking how you're related to her cuts even deeper. Every stab at my heart at confidence got buried deep. In school, I would restrict my eating by spending breakfasts which I hated asleep in class, would skip a few lunches then binge at dinner times. This had the effect of keeping my weight stable.
Even then my mom still criticised my weight. When I look back at my size 12/14 self in secondary school who was gorgeous, a rage fills me. I was so beautiful but with zero confidence. I hurt so much and wish I could go back in time for a few minutes to tell myself I was worthy of being liked, by others and myself.
Eventually being away from my mom, the safety of my boarding school friends and siblings made it easy to seek solace in food. I was in the UK, I was living in student accommodation and for the first time in my life I had a debit card. I spent hundreds of £s a month in takeaways. Then I spent over £100 on diet pills which made me feel ill. In under a year I went from a size 14 to 24 to my mothers horror and mine. I didn’t know about the body positivity movement or Tess Holliday. I only knew that my mom was angry and sad and worried I would die in my sleep one night.
In almost a decade, that has been one of her mantras when talking to me about my weight. That she can’t bury her child and she’s afraid one night I will sleep and not wake up. In her mind its concern, but the way she says it feels like emotional manipulation.
Reading back there’s a lot of mother bashing going on, but it is not intentional. Some people are besties with their mothers and I prefer a more distant relationship. We will eventually get to the daddy issues but that will take some tears and a while before I can go into that.
I crave the catharsis of writing. The word vomit and jumbled feelings in the pit of my stomach. It helps me see myself as that idealistic 16 year old with a heart full of dreams and hopes. Not the current dried out husk I think I am now. I think of my future in abstract terms.
I don’t see a family, mortgage or dog. I just see myself barely existing. I feel this with a resigned calmness. Then I have my internal spiral of being to shortsighted and hasty in writing my life off at 25. I read tweets about people finding first love in their 30s, going back to school in their 40’s and getting into their careers in their 50s. Then I hear that voice in the far corner of my mind whispering, do I even want to make it to my 40’s…
And I answer back quietly that I really don't want to make it to my 40s. I’ll maybe hold on till my parents die so my mom doesn’t lord it over me that she had to bury her child and not the other way around. But some nights I really don’t want to be alive. Some nights I wish I was never born and just like clockwork the tears start. Those tears that I hold in and the dark thoughts I numb with the stimuli of food, YouTube and now K dramas.
For the past few years, I have made my Other World. This Other World is essentially a parallel universe. In this universe I have no issues with food, I have an incredible metabolism that means I can eat virtually anything without guilt. I make friends my first day of college and join so many student societies and actually participate. I push myself in school and get into my mother’s dream of a Russell Group. I choose LSE though she wishes I chose Queen Mary. I work hard, join the Law Society, meet a lovely British Nigerian with a great background, we date a few years and get married. I get a Masters in Creative Writing and have an amazing blog which gets adapted to a critically acclaimed series and I am fulfilled.
Sometimes my Other World self changes. She is the daughter of millionaires who is a genius, polyglot and fighter of social justice. I can sing, know martial arts and take the movie world by storm. Other times I am just pretty and living a simple but happy life. I know in my heart that these are just fantasies and sometimes I wish I could be like Buffy in that episode of BTVS and stay stuck in that Other World fully. I’m sure you’re thinking about my family who I’d leave behind. My response is I can’t miss them if I never remember I had them.
I am the first daughter, the Ada. My parents though flawed always tell me I am a great role model for my siblings. I am seemingly still a virgin, don’t drink, do drugs or rock the boat too much. And I feel even worse. I feel guilty that with all they have sacrificed that they have been stuck with an average daughter and by upper middle class Nigerian standards, if that even exists, a sub par Ada. I feel defective looking around and seeing others in the peak of their careers, vetting engaged, building houses for their parents. I am still afraid of driving!! I can’t even get that basic skill down.
4 years post LLB, no LLM to at least lessen me not being a lawyer and stuck in a customer service role almost 3 years now. I know I am at fault for not making the right decisions. Not applying for the grad jobs or vacancy schemes in time. Being so down and depressed I wouldn’t leave my room for days and weeks at a time. Failing all my LLM modules, adding back all the weight and more after boot camps with my parents, not having enough savings and having an even worse accent after almost a decade in the UK.
My self-deprecating joke I tell is that my sister is the multi talented one, my brother the smart ambitious one and as my parents say I have a big heart. That essentially my parents would say my thing is having a big heart, like that ever helped anyone build a career. I thought if I couldn’t write then I could maybe study Social Work. That got shot down by my mother and I was persuaded to go into the path of Law for University. I applied for Social Work Schemes and got rejected multiple times over multiple years. I was too scared to sink my own money to self fund a Social Work Masters in case it became another LLM fiasco. SO now I have made Teaching my next career goal. I am resigning myself to it the way Henry the 8ths spouses and mistresses must have whenever he wanted to bed them. Powerless and without a choice. Then I think that’s  false equivalency and my pain could not be on the level of the pain they must have endured.
So many feelings, deep thoughts and memories flow out when I get the writing urge. I will likely never actually share this in full for obvious reasons except maybe anonymously. These few pages have jumped through quite a few time periods and experiences. My thoughts aren’t always linear and that ties in with something else I acknowledge but haven’t been serious about. I legitimately think I have ADHD and/or BPD. Watching the diagnosis episode of Crazy Ex Girlfriend by the amazing Rachel Bloom shone a light on feelings and behaviours I have had for a while. Maybe that’s why from the first episode of the show I was in love. She was stuck in the past, holding onto Josh who represented a time in her life of happiness. She had cutaways to magical musical numbers involving herself and the people around her.
The ADHD comes from following iconic black women on twitter who were outspoken about their diagnosis and bringing focus to how black women were being underdiagnosed. But then I think maybe I want to have ADHD as an excuse for the failures in my life and with the current NHS waiting lists I may not get a formal diagnosis for a while. So for now I manage and exist.
I like being honest in my writing. Exposing those dark parts of myself that I let fester in the recesses of my heart and mind.

Gist Power - Best Exam Runs Website
The West African Examinations Council, a non-profit-making organization, with its head-quarters in Accra, Ghana, was established in 1952 after the Governments of Ghana (then Gold Coast), Nigeria, Sierra Leone and The Gambia enacted the West African Examinations Council Ordinances in 1951. Liberia became the fifth member of the Council in 1974. The enactment of the Ordinances was based on the Jeffrey Report, which strongly supported the proposal for the setting up of a regional examining board to harmonize and standardize pre-university assessment procedures in the then British West Africa.
The main objectives of the Council are:
To conduct examinations in the public interest
To award certificates, provided that the certificates did not represent lower standards of attainment than equivalent certificates of examining authorities in the United Kingdom .
Our Vision:

What is Jamb Caps Admission Status 2020
The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) is a Nigerian entrance examination board for tertiary-level institutions. The board conducts entrance Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination for prospective undergraduates into Nigerian universities. The board is also charged with the responsibility to administer similar examinations for applicants to Nigerian public and private monotechnics, polytechnics, and colleges of educations. All of these candidates must have obtained the West Africa School Certificate, now West African Examinations Council, WAEC, or its equivalent, National Examination Council (Nigeria), NECO.
The pioneer Registrar was Mr Michael Saidu Angulu who served from inception in 1978 to 1986.
Tumblr media
Jamb CBT (Computer Based Test) Centres are the various locations and centres in Nigeria approved by JAMB for the registration of the UTME examination. There are various JAMB CBT centres/locations in the 36 states in Nigeria including the Federal Capital Territory (Nigeria), FCT.
Every year, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board,(JAMB) conduct an examination that will determine if a student will be admitted to the higher school.
After conducting and sitting for the examination, the board will release the score/results of candidates. And if you scored 100 marks, you will be eligible to apply for polytechnic/college of education, if you score above 150, you will be eligible to apply for university admission. However, JAMB has raised cut-off mark to 160 for 2019/2020 university admission.
Jamb Caps Admission Status
The management of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has activated the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS)  Jamb Caps Admission Status portal where UTME and Direct Entry candidates can accept or reject their admission offer.
As part of JAMB new admission policy, all admission would be done online through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), consequently, all candidates seeking admission into Universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education and Other tertiary institutions in Nigeria for the 2019/2020 Academic Session are advised to visit the JAMB CAPS portal to check their admission status and also indicate the acceptance or rejection of their admission.
Some institutions may not publish the list of candidates admitted into their various programmes on their own portal or notice board. So, admission seekers are advised to continually check JAMB CAPS to track their admission status.
PLEASE NOTE: Once you accept the admission, your admission quest is over as you will no longer be available for other schools’ admission consideration. On the other hand, if you reject the admission, you become available to other schools who have free admission slots for admission consideration.
What is JAMB CAPS?
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) is a platform created to ensuring quality control, transparency and credibility of the admission process.
The Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) is expected to make provision for a ‘market place’ in the JAMB portal where institutions can go and ‘request for students in Nigeria who score their cut off points.’
The system is such that institutions can only admit those who meet their cut off points. If a candidate fails to meet the cut off mark, that student would certainly be denied admission irrespective of the candidate’s connection.

SUMMA CUM LAUDE? #15
200 LEVEL
I'm back in school currently. This time I'm not going to say I took a long break because I didn't. In my last post I said I would talk about my results once I saw all of them. I still haven't seen MEG121 and GST103, I don't know why. I might talk about my results depending on my mood as I write this.
SURPRISING START
It's day 3 of 200 level and I have only read one slide, in 1 of 11 courses. Hopefully I get my seriousness together today, currently at the department of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering charging my laptop and thinking about starting a second course. The vibe isn't there but I really am reaching out for it.
Unilag hostels are closed till next week, we've been asked to resume and there's no where for majority of students to stay, so a lot of people will resume when hostels open up. Still waiting to be divided intro groups for one particular course, we've only seen lecturers for the MEG courses, I guess EEG people are still handling other things. It's just funny they've asked us to resume honestly. Some students who will get admission have just seen their WAEC results yesterday. But I understand the rush, the school plans to host NUGA Games next year and so they want the planned put calendar to work out regardless of collateral effects. I can't say this is because they want to recover lost time from Covid because Unilag has wisely accepted it's gone and it's never coming back and so all that can be done is look forward, so it's definitely the Games.
BACK TO JAJA?!?!
From Grace to Grass but God is everywhere. I'm going to be staying at Jaja for my 200 Level, except God has a surprise for me and I pray He does. On the bright side, it may be a 10 man room (eweeyy) but I'm a Bonafide. I got the bedspace this time around. In all things give Thanks to God.
I'm not looking forward to the life at Jaja at all, but I'll just make certain adjustments seeing as I have a whole laptop and other stuff to watch over this time around. My prayer is that my roommates are not thieves and that everyone gets what they need for themselves, I don't even want any alpha base visitations at all, I'm not built for such.
Another thing about Jaja is how it'll affect my study life, I have prayed and will continue to pray that my results will not be dependent on where I'm staying. Let it be uncomfortable, I will make my As by God's grace, so I'm not bothered about my school work getting affected, things will work out. All of my help cometh from the Lord.
WORK LOAD
Hm. I've not even started but I already know that 11 courses is going to be a lot, I really should get myself together very quickly, even if I don't start too well this week, I want to study with serious intensity from Week 2 till the end, I can't get As without putting in the work. I refuse to be left behind by my friends who have come to get their own As.
Right now, I’m trying to get started with EEG 211 but I’m not sure what to do and this Google Drive handed down is so badly organised. The 100 Level I just finished, our Drive was run by Seun, 10/10 in organisation so I am not used to this suffering. Due to by lack of knowledge on the courses and their contents, it’s even extra difficult to know what is what. Getting it in order will take a while but I'll surely get there.
DIRECT ENTRY STUDENTS
These guys are so studious 😭😭. Seeing them study while I'm lazing about has been intimidating. And since they know each other because they've had their own classes together and all that, it's like they're another school entirely. Eventually, I'll get to know the ones I get to know.
MIRABEL HOSTEL
I've decided to write about these frauds now because everything is still fresh in my memory. This hostel honestly doesn't feel real when I think about it. The lies and scams, oh my. So in May 2021, when we first resumed physically after the COVID lockdown, my dad came here to get me a room. We were told it costs 400K for a year, but since we didn't come from the start of the year, we paid 300K from May to December.
Before I continue the story, I just want to mention that the mistake we made was not getting a written agreement, we just never expected what eventually happened but we messed up considering how Nigerians are terrible people.
There was a Covid outbreak on campus, so we had to go back home and complete the semester online. We returned to Campus to write our exams, August 29- September 10. When I returned to school, the manager we met had already left (his reason was he didn't like how the owner was behaving towards him). So there was no manager for that period. Alright, after my exams my roommate and I went on holiday, but since our rent was to expire in December, we left some of our things inside the room: beds, toiletries, buckets, box, fridge. How I left the room:

Holiday is over, back to school eh. My roommate goes to Mirabel hostel before me, he even mistakenly took the key to our room home. Only to arrive there and find out our room had been given out to two people. EHN?? He said there was a new manager and the new manager said our rent had expired and that we paid for a session and not for the year (A bloody lie). My roommate had to beg to remain inside the room for the night because he got there around 7PM. At home, I told my parents and so my dad and I went there the following day.
Let's quickly try and process what we just read:
A new manager came in, opened a room, saw the belongings of two people who were on holiday and gave out the room to two new occupants with the other people's belongings inside it?!! Who on earth does that? It's wickedness, it's so crazy to think about. I asked my roommate of all our things were inside the room.
His table was missing
His box was missing
His gas cylinder was missing
My bed was missing

So my dad and I got there the next day in the morning. The manager just opened his mouth to say all sorts of nonsense, I was beyond disgusted. He was lying as if we were stupid or something. Imagine telling us you gave out our rooms because "we didn't come back". Are you okay at all? So I went on holiday but I left my things inside the room, I left my entire bed because I'm Santa Claus or something???? Helloooo??!? I was honestly so upset.
I asked him about the bed and where it was and this guy was playing dumb with me. Asking me "which bed?", My tone changed because I know he was lying. Literally only him and the maintenance guy have access to the rooms and he's acting like A WHOLE BED, will disappear and they won't know. If you are stupid, I am not. What has really annoyed be is that they've been acting like they didn't do all of this intentionally. They're acting innocent, dirty liars. This manager is actually such a liar, one time he told me there was no other key, and there is always another key. Just lies anyhow. Ew.
So the owner of the hostel come, that man too is like his staff, they're all the same. Dubious. He was in on this rubbish too and I know it. The hostel is just a scam and not worth it when you sit down to think about the benefits for how much it costs. Now rooms here about 550K, 700K. I'll come back to this. So he came and we confirmed our payment, he was like hoe did they give out our rooms, shiiorrrr. You mean you don't know boss man? Abeg x3. We sha talked and talked and he was like he agrees we should stay till December and he will accommodate us. What do you mean you will accommodate us? He said it like we were begging. We paid to be here and we will be here. Landlords don't tell tenants they will "accommodation them" as if they're not paying rent. It is their right to be in that house or whatever building.
They gave my roommate and new rooms, so we both had new roommates. My initial plan was to stay till January then move into the Jaja bedspace I got but I'm out of here once I'm ready to move into Jaja, this place is a mess. 550K, 700K for a room and at night, if there's no light, the generator that should come on from 8-12, won't come on at 8, or it'll have one issue, or Mohammed is just going to buy fuel, basically if there's no light, we're in trouble. I have a laptop that doesn't last forever, I need to study but obviously it doesn't matter to them because they run this place like a club. At night it's just a smoking lounge with music and table tennis. Another one that burst my brain is the dog. How do you leave a dangerous dog alone to be roaming the corridors of the room. Imagine I woke up and decided to go outside of my room which is normal, then I got attacked by the dog. I've seen enough. It's time to go. Jaja is terrible but there's light, I can charge my devices. Looking at price and benefits, 25K for Jaja >>>> 700K for Mirbael Hostel.
Pros of Mirabel Hostel:
It's close to Unilag's main gate
Just your and your roommate (Two man room)
Cons of Mirbael Hostel:
Poor water supply
Poor electricity supply
Your things are not safe because the caretakers steal from occupants. When you steal, what are you called? It wasn't just me and my roommate, another guy said they also stole his gas cylinder and haven't "found it"
Loud music every night and even in the morning sometimes
Toilets don't flush + no seat
The place generally works against your studying, especially that poor electricity supply
Tumblr media
Till today they've not "found" my bed. Imagine. It get's more absurd every time I think about it. Okay, you said I didn't come back, I've not come back. Give me my bed. The same way they gave me that crappy flat bed that feels like a mat, is the way my bed was given to someone else and they're acting like they don't know about it. My name is on it for goodness sake, go round and check everyone's bed. The place isn't even that big. By now, if they've done that like they said they have, I would know if my bed is here or they've sold it. I can't even believe anything they say because it's all lies. I'm just so disgusted.
