Reason I made Vėlė 126 is because I saw it as a balance of
1) Got enough life experience to be a competent person.
2) While young for a drow, it's really at that age where you start to become really reckless and believe you're immortal and you let petty shit lead you to death situations. While you have much bigger priorities.
Kagha called you a beloved child of Lolth? Alright. We're ransacking her room and taking on mud mephits and their big daddies completely under leveled. Then we're taking on her after using up all revivify scrolls.
Poisoned the drinks at the goblin camp and a bystander attempted to call you out? Down the poisoned drink without breaking eye contact.
Dangling over a bottomless pit by a thin thread? Yup, sure, whatever. The fact that Lolth won't stop invading your thoughts and you have no idea how or when this ends? Yup, sure, whatever. Lolth knowing all this, knowing that you're in a situation where no matter what you do, even if you get rid of this worm in your head, you will die?
Yup.
Sure.
Whatever.
what is the quality your Tavs/Durges have that makes it MOST unbelievable that the origin characters would collectively deem them leader of the tadpole-ridden pack of freaks
(aside from Durge murdering in their sleep. among the other things)

🌱<3
Abandoned wip meant for "soulmate tattoo/childhood promise" for LietPru Week.
Tolvydas drew his thumb across the other boy's pale wrist. He had prepared the ink. He had gathered the thorns with which to prick the skin, a piece of wet linen to wick away the blood.
The little ghost eyed him wryly. His mouth twisted, and his eyes narrowed as if to say Tolvydas was strange for this, but he did not pull away. The invaders had captured and killed them both here and there, a smattering of charcoal and bludgeonings, waking up staring into the reflection of stars in their own blood. Tolvydas did not want to lose him. He didn't want to lose any of them, so he would do what he could. The thorn pricking up blood and laying down ink would be his promise.
"My men are working together. I'll take care of everyone, this will remind you when they catch you alone in the woods again," he trained a simple design into the skin as he spoke, holding the boy's arm tight. "Don't forget."
When the mark was laid down and the excess blood and ink wiped away, Tolvydas bent his neck to press a kiss over the mark like sealing a letter with wax.
---
Tolvydas dashed against the rocks and washed up on the shore, lifeless. His body was broken this time. The little ghost, Vėlė, crouched over him to pick debris out of his hair and tunic, drawing fingertips along a wet jaw, pushing strands of dark hair straight along the skin. Even Vėlė knew he wouldn't wake up yet with this many broken bones, but still. Even still. He gnashed his teeth together and leaned over the other boy to cry.
Vėlė lifted his inked wrist to his mouth and bit until the skin bled, relegating the grief to this place. Afterward, after the blood ran down his forearm to drip off of his elbow to the lifeless form before, he dragged Tolvydas to his little hut at the edge of the sea. The woods sprang up around and behind into the heavy mist. The warrior was so heavy that Vėlė had to let most of him drag through the sand and over spider webbing roots holding the shore together.
Into the bed, mattress of dried grasses and feathers of whole birds wrapped in a patchwork of fabric endlessly mended. Vėlė began the work of setting the other's bones and wrapping them in rags so that when they mended, they wouldn't fall out of order.

Sveiki sulaukę vasaros saulėgrįžos — Juoninių!
Tumblr media
Šiuo mūsų žodžiu dar gerokai prieš krikščionybę, jau Antikos pasaulis (sen. graikai, elėnai, romėnai) vadino visą juonių naktigonės mėnesį Ιουνιος - IVNIVS, ir dabar tebevadina beveik visi tautų Tautos palikuonys: anglai June, prancūzai Juin, ispanai Junio, italai giugno, rumunai iunie, bulgarai юни, rusai июнь, latviai Jūnijs. Birželis išlikęs Juonių sinonimu ir lietuvių pavardėse, vietovardžiuose Biržai, Birštonas, kt.
Juoniai (jauniai, kauniai, gauniai, ganiai, guiniai, kuiniai) — tai raiti ginkluoti jaunuoliai (dar nevedę). Jų padėtis lietuviškoje santvarkoje:
piemuo — ganytojas, žirgų ganius (о jautelius ganydavo merginos);
medžiotojas — irgi ginkluotas guinius, raitas ir su skalikų gauja;
pasiuntinys — tėvo arba karaliaus potvarkio perdavėjas biegys, viedzio (vyties) žinios (girdo) pranešėjas girdys, paštininkas angelas (angeris), vėliau perkeltine prasme Dievo pranašas angelas;
palydovas, saugas — raitas ginkluotas svarbesnio žygio lyderis, nuotakos vestuvių pulko pabrolys, kitokių iškilmių palydovas, apsaugininkas, karaliaus gvardietis, vėliau perkeltine prasme Viešpaties angelas sargas;
karys — tėvynės gynėjas brolelis kaunius, išjodavęs kautis, išguiti priešo, pasiryžęs pasiaukoti už tėvus, tėviškę, už mūsų ateitį gyventi nevergovinėje lietuviškoje santvarkoje — savarankiškai, be mokesčių, be tarnų ir be ponų, švento padorumo papročiais ir gamtamoksle tikyba. Todėl pasilikę mes jo atminimui pagerbti išsikeliame gauniaus vėlės vėliavą „Pagaunią“ (Пaгоня).
Tumblr media
Mūsų vėliavoje raudonoje liepsnoje pavaizduota balta tautos gynėjo vėlė — ne senis išminčius viedzys ~ viedys (suprastinta tartimi vydys, vytis, vyčius, vyčas), o atvirkščiai: raitas karžygys jaunuolis — gaunys ~ kaunys ~ kuinys ~ kuonys ~ juonys ~ jaunius ~ gaunius ~ kaunius.

Vėlė generally likes them but she frightens them with her special fucked eyes a lot of the time. Tiefling kiddos aren't that bothered by it though. Generally wants to protect kids because Menzoberranzan didn't exactly allow her to do that. Wow. What a functional society. Scammers do get scammed though, looking at you Mattis.
One of the first quests I knock out in act 3 canonically is the teddy bear donations to refugees with bombs inside of them. She sees that as something that has to be shut down immediately by that point in her story, now that she can prevent those atrocities without Lolth doing something horrible to her.
Act 1 had a lot of "oh if I'm nice to these kids, bad things will happen to both of us" anxiety. Oh, I saved Arabella without a great punishment? I can't wait to meet her and her parents again in Baldur's Gate!
Uh oh! Act 2 spaghetti-o's!
Takes a conversation or two with her companions to get her to realize that it wasn't her fault. It's not her fault that the world is wicked.
Mol is an interesting one. Vėlė didn't tell her that Raphael is dead because Mol had to learn things the hard way, but she wouldn't allow any more souls to be condemned by the cambion rat bastard.
Yenna is precious and was welcomed to camp without hesitation. I headcanon that post-story she gets paid to watch over Vėlė's and Astarion's house while the two are away doing shenanigans so she has a roof over her head whenever she needs it.
An orange cat by the name of Spot wasn't adopted by the two heroes per se, but forcibly kidnapped the two to take care of him so Grub has a buddy. I digress.
Vėlė can't have children of her own because Lolth likes to be a little bit silly and goofy with curses. But that's a post for another day.
Tav Question
How does your tav feel about kids? Not necessarily about having them but just in general. For example how they felt about Mol or Yenna.

Vėlinės/Ilgės - one of the oldest and most prevalent Lithuanian holidays. It is believed that during the period of Vėlinės, spirits of the Dead ("vėlės", hence the name "Vėlinės") return to the realm of the living to visit their loved ones (official date of Vėlinės is November 2, though according to the ancient traditions the whole end of October to first half of November can be considered the period of Vėlinės). To many balts, me included, it is a time to honor, and become closer to, their Ancestors (as well as Deities closely related to the Dead, namely Vėliuona, Velinas, Žemyna and Perkūnas). Even though specific rituals evolved and morphed as ages passed, their main elements prevailed - food and drink (offerings as well as dining together with the Dead, be it in the gravesite or somewhere else), and, especially, fire (the old bonfire tradition has been largely substituted by candles). I personally share a drink (bourbon or bitter usually) with my Ancestors on their burial places, and light candles for the Dead. Who knows, maybe my own traditions will evolve in time, as I grow spiritually, to be more elaborate. Though myself, as well as I am certain many others, ought to remember that rituals are largely symbolic, and what truly counts is sincerity. Your Ancestors will stand by you no matter how large or small are the rituals to honor them, as long as you honor them in your heart. 🕯

APH Lithuania is SO complex.
I don’t know how I got so obsessed with this character, but more and more I always end up thinking about the same fact of how f*cking well his personality fits the country and it’s history.
This is going to be a random ramble about Liet, as a person who roleplays as him on this deep, deep hole we call Hetalia. He deserves attention!
First of all, one of the things people will learn about Lithuania if they see the things Himaruya tell us about him and what history tells is that he, and his problems, are not what they seem to be at first glance. Let me explain;
Tumblr media
When people write Lithuania or think of his main traits, they immediately remember him as the ultimate doormat. Well...he is! But the reason is not because he is weak, or because he is afraid of the others, or maybe because he is naive, like people may think sometimes, or portray him as. One cannot tell that it’s all because of PTSD as well. Like we can see, he is described as serious, and with a strong perseverance. One time, even being said to be more serious than Germany. But what I find most interesting is...
Tumblr media
This says a lot about him. Maybe one of the most well represented personifications psychologically on my point of view just because of this really really really good person detail together with the serious and persevering ones. And finally, I’ll tell why.
Lithuania’s history is marked by how different it was from the Western Europe when it came to the territories’ treatment.
Century after century, there was a lot of intense and longstanding wars going on, starting when Lithuania in hetalia would be just a child. Eastern Europe never was the best part of the continent as we all know. It was too cold. People at the time were hungry, tired, and terrified of the Mongol and Ottoman Empires. If you see videos of how Lithuania was changing year by year on youtube, you may notice that there were huge territorial expansions in a tiny gap of time, that were kept that way for centuries. The explanation is; Lithuania was a badass, the Lithuanian culture at this time still held the pagan attitude of considering an honor to die in battle, as their beliefs were that no one truly died, they would come back in a second life as vėlės(spirits/souls). The conquered territories overall liked the Lithuanians, because they were very good rulers, respecting the languages and costumes of the people and protecting them, as well as the ones still willing to fight against the enemies.
...And winning.
All the Lithuanian history is painted by the fact that he was the protector. Sure, Poland was strong, Ukraine was strong, but Lithuania was the one keeping everything together.
Now think about APH Lithuania, him as this tiny child...
Tumblr media
Kicking the crap out of not only Prussia on many battles, but also a lot of more armies at the same time. No wonder Russia wanted him as a friend, and why Lithuania was so quick to offer his friendship to Russia if he wanted.
His attitude fits perfectly.
I’m not saying that he was the only country kicking ass, but certainly we see the others acting as children and having a life. All we see of Lithuania is him working, pleasing, and overthinking.
Later on the comics, we see that it ended as people easily taking advantage of him or hurting him, and he doesn’t seeming to mind, or to act against it. And it’s not entirely because of his PTSD from the Soviet times. Oh, no, no, no. He is rehabilitating, and these scars concern Russia, only. It just makes sense that he doesn’t complain, he is...used to it.
As Vydūnas once said ‘’The tension in the lithuanian mind is manifested in a very characteristic fashion; the greater the difficulty, the more he is disposed to accept all with serenity, and even with gaiety and jest.’’
The point where it starts to get complex is; Lithuania wants to protect and please to the point where he forgets about his own needs. He as a country grew up taking care of others, and now his anxiety is one of the reflections of it. As a complement of...what could be the most reasonable result?
Atlas personality.
Tumblr media
Compulsive caregiving defines Lithuania completely, he doesn’t know when to stop, and the fact that he seems to want that Estonia stay with him, as well as sometimes slightly bossing him and Latvia around, could mean that he still think he needs to, not giving space for them. Because that's the only thing he learned to do and to be in life.
That’s why the fact that Poland is helping him with his PTSD is not sufficient. And one can say ‘’well, but now things are fine! He has space and time to work on it too’’. It’s...not true, though. Sure, there’s no more brutal wars and brutal bosses, and he has his friends with him, now being independent.
But we are talking about these guys;
Tumblr media
They were talking about Poland in this strip. The baltics are...strangely jealous of him with Poland because he is ‘’too close’’, and as we can see, Poland doesn’t seem to be the particular problem, since Latvia seems to be lowkey threatening Estonia. So are they jealous of everyone that gets ‘’too close’’??? They love him, but the two of them alone gives Lithuania so much trouble that he doesn’t have space to get better, because he needs to be the responsable one, the ‘’big brother’’, and that’s problably his own fault unintentionally for insisting to much on taking care of everything alone(what he often does, and right after we see him complaining alone about having to do it). Just see their interactions, for god’s sake, Lithuania always has the final word on almost everything.
And about Poland, we all know how much stress he gives Lithuania even if the two love each other as best friends. Lithuania still has some really tense stuff going on with Poland, and neither of them talks about it.
Was not the fact that Lithuania is a really really really good person, Himaruya could have taken another path for him, considering his epic past. I dare to say he could have been very similar to Denmark and Prussia in personality. Yet, he is not.
Well... The King of Eastern Europe still has a long road to walk before finally having peace. He needs someone to show him that he doesn’t need to carry the world on his shoulders, and that the ones he love will be okay if he does so. Maybe one day Poland will, who knows? It would be awesome to see some character development...but for now I just keep dreaming.

ANCIENT BALTIC FUNERAL CUSTOMS
It seems unbelievable that even as late as 1377 and 1382, respectively, the Lithuanian king Algirdas and his brother Kęstutis could still be buried according to the old traditions in a Christian Europe; dressed in silver and gold, they were burned in funeral pyres together with their best possessions, horses, hunting dogs, birds, and weapons. In spite of a ban by the church and subsequent persecution, this rite still persisted in the 15th century. The tenacious preservation of this ancient Indo-European ritual casts light on other features of Baltic religion. Chronicles relate that Lithuanians, after losing a battle, joyfully committed suicide; this was also true of the widows of soldiers killed in battle. Such voluntary immolation and the articles buried with the dead are evidence of a belief in life after death. It is said that at the funeral of a nobleman his companions threw lynx and bear claws into the fire to aid his climb up the mountain to God, an indication of Christian influence. Archaeological excavations have also yielded evidence of fire funeral rites: the bones of humans and animals, metal jewelry, and weapons found at the sites of the funeral pyres.
In funeral rites several different phases are discernible during the period between death and burning. The deceased was laid out in his house for a longer or shorter period depending on his social position and the size of his estate. During this time a meal lasting several days was held for the deceased’s relatives and friends. In the course of the festivities the participants conducted fights on horseback. Lamentations, leave-takings, and praises of the deceased, as well as wishes for a safe journey to the world of the dead, accompanied the corpse on the way to the funeral pyre. In spite of persecution by the church, the tradition of lamentation has lasted until modern times, though in a somewhat modified form. One of the peculiarities of Baltic funeral rites was their similarity to wedding ceremonies. The corpse and a partner selected from the living were dressed in elaborate wedding costumes, wedding songs were sung, and dancing took place. The basis of these ceremonies was the belief that the dead anticipate a new companion with the same joy as the living do a new in-law. The corpse’s living partner was a symbolical substitute for the new comrade awaited by the dead.
The use of living people to represent symbolically the companions of the dead in funerary practices suggests a dominant concept in Baltic religious thought, namely, that the boundary between the worlds of the dead and the living was not real. The dead continued to live invisibly and were present at all important occasions. A place was set for them at the festival table and no one else might sit there. The extensive practice of feeding the dead was a consequence of the concept that the living were responsible for their welfare. Originally, their food must have been placed at the hearth. In later development, meals for the dead were also placed in other buildings, such as the threshing house or the bathhouse. Under the influence of Christianity, these living dead (Latvian velis, Lithuanian vėlė) have been confused with the Devil. A widespread view was that the souls of the dead dwell in the zalktis (Latvian; Lithuanian žaltys; “green snake”); thus special care was taken in its feeding. But the zalktis was also closely associated with fertility and sexual symbolism.

The vicepresident of Brasov Branch of Association THE NEW PAGAN DAWN, Antonius Karasulas wrotes for all pagan and Romanian community his thoughts and also, the message which we sent to Romuva NGO from Lithuania, where we was aprecciated these days for our fights and national representing, as the single NGO for representing pagans, here in Romania. We will qoutes this message: Greetings all! My pagan name is Thorstein, and I am a member in Brasov. I do not know much Romanian so I have to write in English. Sorry ... I am visiting Vilnius in Lithuania at the moment. The local pagan faith, Romuva, is growing and is very interesting. Here is part of their prayer, it is very inspiring: "That my hands may never become bloody from human blood. That the blood of animals, fish or birds may not soil my hands, if I might kill them satiated and not hungry. Those who today kill animals with delight will tomorrow drink human blood. The more hunters live in Lithuania, the further fortune and a happy life escapes us. That I may not fell a single tree without holy need; that I may not step on a blooming field; that I may always plant trees. That I may love and respect Bread. If a crumb should accidentally fall, I will lift it, kiss it and apologize. If we all respect bread, there will be no starvation or hardship. That I may never hurt anyone; that I may always give the correct change; that I may not mistakenly steal even the smallest coin. The Gods punish for offenses. That I may not denigrate foreign beliefs and may not poke fun at my own faith. The Gods look with grace upon those who plant trees along roads, in homesteads, at holy places, at crossroads, and by houses. If you wed, plant a wedding tree. If a child is born, plant a tree. If someone beloved dies, plant a tree for the Vėlė (spirit of the deceased). At all holidays, during all important events, visit trees. Prayers will attain holiness through trees of thanks. So may it be!” My best wishes to you all for the next year! Wassail!! (la Ramuva, Tauragės Apskritis, Lithuania) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6tiKHpA04c/?igshid=1kjkanxjijswn

Note
sorry if you can't think of anything but do you have headcanons for what kinds of mythical creatures the 2p baltics might be?
2P Lithuania - Vėlės, spirits of a dead human being
2P Latvia -  Lietuvēn, demon who's soul was cursed by a sorcerer and kills other children and animals, he can cause sleep paralysis
2P Estonia - Hingeliblikas, a person's spirit in the form of a moth (Mod Molly had to take over here for the time being, since Mod Pocky isnt feeling so well at the moment! Thanks for the question none the less!)
