Best Cooling Fan
Vornado Air Circulator Fan
The Vornado Large Whole Room Air Circulator Fan won our vote as best overall cooling fan because it provided a well-made product, excellent air circulation, small foot print, and excellent customer service. We researched the 660 Large size, but there are other sized to accommodate rooms of various sizes. The technology that Vornado uses works with the room to move the air around without rotating, but still providing incredible air movement.

Best Tower Fan
Honeywell Tower Fan
The Honeywell Quiet Set Whole Room Tower Fan is our top pick for the best tower fan. We liked that it had 5 speeds to choose from and includes a shut off timer. It oscilates nicely and has plenty of power to cool down a medium to large size room. It is also a nice heigh standing at 40 inches tall. It is a little noisey at the top speed so we preferred the 4th setting for optimal air movement and the least amount of noise.

Quietest Fan
Dyson Air Multiplier
The Dyson Air Multiplier moved a lot of air evenly and was able to cool the room we tested. It’s the quietest fan that we tested. The only thing we didn’t like about the Dyson was the price. You have to pay for the ingenuity and sleekness that comes with the Dyson products.
History of the Cooling Fan
Let us all give thanks to Dr. Schuyler Skaats Wheeler, the inventor of the electric fan, which celebrates its 135th birthday this year (2017). Like a lot of modern conveniences, we take for granted that the air moving around us was once a stale and stagnant place where our ancestors spent many a day hot and sweaty.
Cooling off with handheld fans goes back as far as one can guess, with feathers and leaves being the source of comfort as they were waved by slaves to cool off the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans alike. But it wasn’t until the Japanese invented the folding fan in the eighth century that we really had something to hold onto (pardon the pun). It was during this time that exquisite hand painted fans became all the rage, with these Asian gems being distributed throughout the world by Portuguese traders in the 1400s. The Chinese culture was responsible for bringing about the mechanical fan to society around the year 180 AD. Inventor Ting Huan created a seven-wheel system, each wheel approximately 10 feet in diameter, which one man could manage and cool entire halls and rooms with. These rotary style fans were later used to vent mine shafts, in grain mills, and to cool.
Roman culture brought about many ideas and inventions, including early attempts at the air conditioner with their use of fans blowing over snow and ice. The Roman emperors would have snow hauled down from the Alps for added effect. But it wasn’t until 1902 when Willis Carrier invented the air conditioner that things really began to cool down. It was his design that was the foundation of our air conditioning systems used today.
Without electricity, Carrier would not have gotten too far, and it was in 1882 that Wheeler developed his design. It’s worth nothing that Wheeler designed not just the electric fan, but also the electric elevator and electric fire engine.
It seems to us that Schuyler Wheeler is a name to be remembered and a man to be thanked!
What Features are Important
A fan provides a quick solution for bringing down the temperature by circulating the air. We are familiar with fans being used to cool, to ventilate, and for drying purposes. Cooling fans also provide a more economical solution than air conditioning units, regardless of whether they are portable or whole house systems. When you are determining which fan is right for you, there are questions to ask to find the proper solution to your requirements.
What type of room will your fan be in? Residential fans are what we are reviewing in this article, but there are models that you can find which will meet the needs of industrial locations as well.
What do you need the fan for? Are you looking to dry out an area that was flooded? Do you need a small room to be cooled down every so often or will the fan need to run all the time? Will the fan be providing a water misting option or need to be waterproof?
Where will the fan be in the room?Consider if you will be looking for a model that sits on the floor, is a pedestal model that can be adjusted for height, a window fan that will be semi-permanent for a season or two? Then you should make sure that there is an electrical outlet close by to where you need to place the fan, or if it needs to be in a different location, a long enough cord (or option to use a power extension cord).
How much power do you need from this fan? You need to consider the amount of power that your fan can produce for a few reasons. The cost to run the fan, and the efficiency it provides. You will also need to make sure that the size of fan that you buy can accommodate the room size and needs of what you are looking for.
Are there any special or specific features that you need your fan to have? Will your fan need to be on a timer? Does a bladeless model make sense for you to consider? If there are young children around, or even unsupervised areas, this is a type of fan model that you might want to consider for safety. Will you need your fan to have multiple speeds or noise requirements? Should the fan that you chose have a temperature feature to adjust automatically?
How We Selected
While there is a wide range of fan types that exist in the modern world, the typical household fan is identified as an axial flow type of fan blade. This type of fan has blades that force air to move parallel to the shaft in which the blades rotate. We then looked at fans that were top sellers or had only highly rated reviews. The cooling fans that we chose were floor or tower models. We did not consider the style of cooling fan that was designed for windows. We also kept our research to fans that were designed to cool an area or room and not for just one person like the personal cooling fans that are small and portable. This type of fan runs on batteries, or sometimes solar power, but we limited our research to those powered by electricity.
Which Features We Reviewed
We looked at all the fans reviews and made sure that the majority of feedback was top rated, four stars or above on Amazon reviews. We looked in detail at whether the fan had an automated oscillating feature, what type of design or model it was (floor, stand, table); and finally, we made a note of how many speed settings the fan had. And like we always make a point of doing, we ensured that when there was an issue, the manufacturer was responsive to the customer and their needs or issues.
Rotating or Stand Still
We do understand that a rotating fan, or sometimes identified as oscillating, can be the very kind of fan that you are looking for. But with modern technology, this is not always necessary, so keep your options open with some of the models that we considered.
Brand Rotating or Stand Still Honeywell Quiet Set Whole Room Tower Fan Stand Still; Adjustable Vornado Whole Room Air Circulator Fan Stand Still; Adjustable Dyson Air Multiplier AM07 Table Fan Stand Still with Manual Adjustment Rowenta Turbo Silence Oscillating Stand Fan Rotating Lasko Wind Machine Stand Still; Adjustable
Style
The style of the cooling fan indicates if it is a floor model, a tower model, or a table model. This is important to know when you are planning where you will be placing your fan for the best circulation of air.

Multiple Speeds
If you want a cooling fan that is going to work with you depending on what the temperature is in the room, then you need multiple speeds. Speeds can also determine noise level, and have the option to adjust that is a nice feature.

Honeywell Quiet Set Whole Room Tower Fan
View on Amazon
The Honeywell Quiet Set Whole Room fan is a tower model that has five levels of speed adjustmentand includes four different autos shut off timer increments (1,2, 4, and 8 hours). Managed by remote control, you can also modify settings by using the touch button electronics which are easily accessed at the top of the model. There were a few complaints about a lack of power with this fan, which may be because of the intention to be a quiet model. The description also indicates that there are eight quiet cooling settings, so you have the option to set it based on temperature requirements. There were multiple complaints about a rattling noise in this fan and the light on the top of the unit which can be too bright or a distraction, but overall users were pleased with their purchase. This fan measures 40 inches tall, so it’s an appealing design if you have limited space.
Vornado Whole Room Air Circulator Fan – Large
View on Amazon
The Vornado Whole Room Air Circulator Fan moves using deep pitched blades with Vornado’s signature Vortex Technology. It is this technology that provides complete circulation of air throughout a room. The four speed settings of the 660 models are designed to be easily accessed on the top of the floor designed model. Vornada has been making fans since 1945, so they know what they are doing, and it shows in this well-designed fan. This model is available in small (circulates up to 70 feet), medium (circulates up to 75 feet) and in this model, the large (circulates air up to 100 feet). While the Vornado model does not oscillate or rotate, it was not necessary because of the technology that is found in the Vortex Technology. We know things do not always go right, but we always check to see that when there is a problem, it is addressed. Vornado responded to every single one of the negative reviews that we came across and offered a solution.
Dyson Air Multiplier AM07 Table Fan
View on Amazon
The Dyson Air Multiplier Table Fan was our choice to review for Dyson products because we were intrigued by the bladeless fan option. There are other Dyson models, but this one seemed to compare best to the other models that we were researching. As with most Dyson products, it is a streamlined and sleek design, and we love the bladeless cooling technology. The ten-inchdesign is combined with Dyson’s Air Multiplier technology. It includes a sleep timer and remote control with ten airflow settings. And adding to the sleek design factor is the magnetic and curved feature on the remote which allows you to store it directlyin the fan base. There were a few customers who indicated that their models were not working quietly, and they were given the opportunity to work with Dyson to find aresolution. Our experiencefirsthand with other Dyson products has been stellar, so we know that purchasing any of their products would be backed up by a solid guarantee. The only problem with this model is that the cost might prohibit many people from buying it, which we can understand. For that reason, it is not a top pick, but it comes as highly recommended as the Vornado.
Rowenta Turbo Silence Oscillating Stand Fan
View on Amazon
The Rowenta Stand fan is a four-speed fan with a 16-inch oscillating head, so you are going to get some good movement out of this one. Designed to move up to 1695 cubic feet of air, you are also going to get power. This fan was highly reviewed by the people who tested it, some of them even buying multiple units – including one of the people who had a complaint. We think it is a brilliant design, with the electronic pad easily accessed in the middle of the adjustable stand. Very well designed and easy to use whether you are directly powering the fan with touch, or using the remote control. The few complaints that we found from users of this fan were that the metal blade guard rusted. That could be environmental, but with the plastic models, it is something you can avoid. We also did not see much interaction from the company where customers had issues, so for that reason, we cannot give it our overall best. But if you are looking for a stand fan, this model is well made, and the consumers who have it are very pleased.
Lasko Wind Machine
View on Amazon
The Lasko Wind Machine provides a 20-inch fan that can be operated at three different speeds. It can be manually angled up and down but doesn’t rotate. This fan is powerful, and if you need that much power, it is a smart choice. If you like this style of fan, but do not need that much power, consider the Honeywell model. This model gives you a much bigger fan blade, and it weighs almost three times as much as the Honeywell model, so consider where you are going to be placing this fan and whether it meets your needs. Most consumers were pleased with this fan. It does not come with a remote control or timer. It does come with a handle on the top for easy transport.
What We Liked
The bladeless technology of the Dyson is our favorite feature on a fan. Not only does it make for easier cleaning of the fan base unit, but also eliminates most of thesafety concerns that are correlated to having a fan.
We liked the multiple speed functions of all the fans that we researched, because having the option to adjust for temperature and noise was important.
What We Didn’t Like
We did not like the danger that all fan blades pose, so having a solid and well made made product is important.
Conclusion
There are a lot of options when it comes to choosing a cooling fan, and like all decisions, you need to consider your needs, your requirements, what kind of space you will be working within, and what your budget it. A fan can be a loud distraction if you are not careful about the noise it emits, but it can also be a welcome friend on a sweltering summer day. You have multiple models to choose from, and a fan is an economical choice to make for cooling down over air conditioning units that can run up your electricity bill much faster.
