Mermaids used to be one of my favorite things to draw for a while, so I really wanted to do something for Mermay!

I might make more of these, tried to go pretty lose (and left the sketch layer visible)

Uhhh so like most of my characters are trans in some way, but I'll just share some of the standouts for today lol.

First of course is my Commander Vlixxa Floppy, who is a trans woman (Gender going strong for almost 40 years now). Loves her kids Dragon's Watch, and flowers, she's trying to learn how to take breaks for mental health but well.. the universe doesn't like that.

Tori, my chaotic genderfuck engineer (any pronouns/ he/she/they). Who after almost dying and getting a concussion/partial amnesia realized "Wait complete neutrality/slight discomfort isn't how your supposed to feel about your gender?"

And then of course we have Laurence, my man who realized it was his mission to dress as slutty as possible once most of his body dysphoria went away. (Which reminds me that I need to do more gw2 masculine armor redesigns this art is so old lol)

I caught wind of a trend to show your commander as other races, and since i've already dabbled in human (and a little sylvari) flop I thought it would be fun to do.

Below is some more details about how I came up with each one / the character differences they'd come with.

Charr - Based her main colors/patterns after a Jaguar. I kinda see this version of her originally being from the flame legion or something and then fleeing only to struggle in the citadel.

Norn - A follower of wolf, this version is less afraid to show her scars because A. I think norn get hot more easily being acclimated to cold climates, and B. a norn version of her would probably see scars less as "look at all the mistakes I made that got me hurt" and more "check out how many near-death experiences I've survived"

Human - Closest to asura floppy since they both grew up in human culture, not much to day here..

Sylvari - Honestly no idea how her story would go since sylvari flop would be so different, mostly in the fact that the oldest sylvari are like 34 and flop is 50. Her look is based on a mix of plants, her base is a bald cypress plant, with lichen mimicking her vitiligo, and then I put trumpet flowers in her hair for color and cute.

Ok I’m gonna be honest, while she tries not to draw the connection Qirri 100% makes Floppy think of her own daughter. A sickly progeny who can talk her ear off about innovative ideas for golems and mechs and aids and shit, alchemy that is so much like how Aerri was. 

She would do her best not to coddle (she likes giving kids freedom), but she would be pretty concerned for Qirri’s health and making sure she’s taking care of herself (at least a little). 

Honestly Floppy wasn’t the best college student (and doesn’t remember all that much from those days anyway), but she would be more than willing to listen to Qirri talk on and on about dynamics related things.

Also she would find Qirri and Taimi’s relationship really cute and be super supportive of it, though I feel like she would double crack down if they were enabling each other to focus too much on science and not enough on their health. She’d see them both working too hard on a jade tech project and make them go outside to like a garden or somewhere to eat a meal.

Anyways talking about my Commander, honestly she’s one of the few commanders who’s mental state got better after being commander so I don’t think she’d be doing much.

But In the AU where here daughter doesn’t die and she doesn’t become Commander she instead is a biologist.

She lives in Caledon forest and studies the physiology of sylvari (with their consent of course)

What is something your commander or character wanted to do or be instead of becoming the commander or whatever they’re doing now?

Gotta know Floppy's opinion on Phlunt.

She fucking HATES that bitch, actually she hates most of the arcane council. 

Their valuing of ‘knowledge and innovation’ over things like…Ethics and you know NOT KILLING OR TORTURING PEOPLE. 

The council (and most definitely Phlunt) were the receivers of many pranks in her college days, and while she has to tone herself down a lot more (she was holding back so hard when he was stealing Taimi’s research), she does her best to use her power and influence as commander to stop them from some of the awful stuff they do.

POV: You're stuck in a swamp when this guy comes to rescue you. How do you deal with the fact that his drake's new brood isn't the only thing that needs to hatch?

Oh now this is a strange one, it took a bit of brain storming to figure out if there was even a way for this to happen since most of their possible interactions Flops would be going through it and Faolain would be uhh...evil. One scenario did manage to pop into my mind though.

It's 1304 AE, a bunch of secondborn had just been captured and Caithe and Faolain are on the way to rescue them. When trying to find a way to enter the facility, they see a tired college intern who was sent to deliver a supplies shipment (someone just shoved the responsibility on her) and get her at knife-point.

She doesn't need to be at knife-point for long though because as soon as she finds out a bunch of sentient plant people are being experimented on in there she's ready to help.

With the combined efforts of assassin skills, lab clearance, and hiding in a cart of supplies, the three manage to get in there and actually save a bit more of the secondborn. (Vorpp still escapes though)

Honestly I have no idea how this relationship would progress other than Vlixxa becoming the one maybe okay asura who possibly gets invited to join the plant lesbian polycule?? Maybe??

It would all go to shit so fast though so uhh..

Floppy! How do you feel about Gorrik? @ratasum

Gorrik is great! He was a wonderful addition to the team! I know some people have issues with his..eccentricities, but personally seeing him so excited about things makes me happy. There are some moments though, like when he first joined, I had to remind him of how deadly the scarab plague was whenever he got a little too into studying it. Blish also helped a lot with that…

I still feel bad, sometimes I wonder if things would’ve gone differently if I was more prepared, if I wasn’t so shaken up after…well it’s all in the past. I shouldn’t dwell on it.

💦 : Is your OC’s attractiveness based on looks or a more intangible aura?

I mean the aura she has as the Commander is definitely quite attractive. But I’ve always been of the opinion that Floppy is a total asuran hottie (at least looks wise). 

Look at her, those bright eyes, well kept hair, those Big, Beautiful, Sexy Ears! A lot of her college social life was based on the fact that other students thought she was hot (even if she was a country bumpkin) so they invited her to parties and stuff. 

💘 : Is your OC a very good flirt? Are they charming?

I don’t think she’s really the best at flirting, but she definitely has a natural charm about her. When she was younger (and even now despite all that’s happened) she has a very bright aura about her, she’s kind and genuine and I that is probably charming to a lot of people. 

💐 : What is their courting style? How would they woo someone?

I think her strategy is to just be friendly and ask if they want to do things? When she was younger it was probably a bit of ‘want to dance with me?’ or ‘me and some of the krewe are going to do an ‘experimental test’ on one of the Arcane Council, want to join?

Now though it’s probably similar but she finds it a bit harder to initiate. She’s tired and out of practice, and honestly overthinks stuff now. But I do think she has a new wooing method also of giving/making things for others. Offering to cook a lunch rather than buy at a noodle stand, creating a disease resistant strain with bright coloration of their favorite flower, just nice small things she can be relatively sure they’ll like.

3. How would you describe your childhood?

Uhhh I guess the best word to describe it would be..isolated? I lived in the family house with my dad in the middle of the blackroot swamp, if you went out for a little you’d get to some farms and fishing huts eventually but most of my ‘friends’ were the local wildlife. 

That did change a bit when the road was reinforced and a trading post was built though, I was able to go there and talk with any travelers or traders as well as Gunnar and the other lionguard. 

So yeah on the whole it was…fine? My dad wasn’t the most supportive but, you know…he was a good one most of the time. 

4. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I think I wanted to be a drake farmer, I wanted to raise a bunch of them as pets and then eat their eggs..That was when I was really little though. 

I had another phase when I was…12? 14? I really wanted to be an elegant swordfighter, which I guess kinda happened in some ways..

5. What would they look like as the side character in someone else's story?

Well as the Commander I guess in anyone’s story she is just the cool somewhat unknown Commander, but that’s boring and I know what side character role she’d have in another story. 

In my ‘correct’ timeline Commander Link AU Flopps is a Biologist who studies the Sylvari, consensually of course this whole thing is done in collaboration. 

Later on during Lws2 she is recruited to help study the new plant based dragon minions that show up, and ends up discovering their incredible genetic similarity to Sylvari a little too late.

She’s fine though and gets through HoT fairly unscathed, her ability to study plant life definitely helped with discovering food sources, medicines, and enemy weaknesses in such unfamiliar territory. 

10. Would/does knowing their backstory change how people (in general but also Tyria at large) view them?

It depends on the people but yes I think so.  

When Dragon’s Watch first found out she had a kid (during Lws4 when her ghost showed up) there was a lot of ‘oh fuck when I said that one thing did that upset her.’ and ‘shit that’s a lot to go through.’

 Her background also would probably change how a lot of Asura view her, the Commander is supposed to be this bastion of intellect and innovation, and finding out she’s a ‘swamp-raised bookah’ would make them all immediately doubt her abilities. 

Which is probably why she has an extra hard time dealing with the Arcane council, since some of them probably do know about her upbringing and college days based on records (or direct experience). 

13. What is the worst/funniest/dumbest article that could be written about them in Tyria's trashiest gossip mag?

Ok I’ve stated before but the funniest/dumbest article would definitely be some story about her ‘secretly dating’ Rytlock.  The cover would be some candid picture taken of Floppy touching his fur (they were discussing conditioner brands) and probably have some awful title like “Love knows No Size: The Commander touches up on the Prickly Tribune. ‘He’s only soft for her!’)  

In terms of the worst article, definitely some kind of expose digging into her past, either talking about her less than amazing grades in college or even worse, bringing up her daughter. 

While I don’t know what type of person her ex was, some awful story like “I had a kid with the Commander, and she’s not like what you think.” with a lot of half-truths and awful shit being said about her and their kid would uhh yeah she would be really upset by that.

Well I think she’s a very skilled golemancer, and incredibly innovative. But she can be a bit…aggressive? I’ll always be grateful for her helping me out of that inquest prison, but it was certainly..a lot to suddenly be fighting against the greater inquest organization (I just wanted Aerri’s stuff back..). I guess we really aren’t that different though, both fighting to preserve the memory and invention of someone dear.

Qirri peers up at Floppy for several moments, her long ears tipped back, brow furrowed over those round eyes. Then she puts her hands behind her head. "What was college like when you were in Dynamics? I know it always felt weird to me, since I started so young. Did you have a good time?"

“Oh wow college, that was a while ago..20..no wait 30 years now?” She is thinking, definitely a little surprised at remembering how much time has passed since then. 

“I’d say It was quite a fun time! I was happy to be able to start being myself, even if I was seen as a bit of a bookah. Actually maybe I was a bookah, I definitely didn’t know as much as everyone else did and probably spent a bit too much time on pranks and parties…” 

“But overall I’d say it was fun while it lasted! Then of course my father well…and Aerri happened which really changed things, of course I never minded that.”

OH WOW That’s a lot of characters!

So all this space stuff is definitely a bit over Floppy’s head, her preferred scientific study is about stuff on the ground in front of her. But she think’s what they’re doing is very cool, and I think she’d be really excited by a Krewe that not only works between colleges but also allows for the involvement of Non-asura (as research partners and not test subjects). 

Overall she’d be amazed by what they’re doing and hope other Krewe’s follow suit. She'd bring them some snacks to eat while researching (since I bet such a difficult subject leads to long unbroken studies)

1. Your character is now the leader of their species, whatever that looks like for them (Arcane Councilmember, Imperator, Royalty, etc). How do they govern and what sorts of changes would they make if any?

Oh Floppy would be such an unpopular arcane council member, ‘She wants all research to have….ETHICS??? Ugh’. She’d try so hard to make research and experimentation less uhh…evil, and no one would like it because ‘it’s inefficient.’ She’d also try to make the colleges and research more open to non-asura which again would be incredibly unpopular with all those xenophobic rat bastards. 

Maybe she’d have like a small group of really dedicated followers who’d protest unethical research and try to improve lab culture. But it’s still a really small group and let’s be real she is getting assassination attempts from half the council. 

3. What person impacted them the most?

Gunnar, the Lionguard who was stationed at a trading post close to her house. He was basically like her second dad, and the one who supported her in areas where her real dad didn’t.  

He taught her how to fight, and helped her gain more confidence in who she is. Without him I don’t think she’d be as feisty (or as openly trans) as she is now. 

Also without him giving her the confidence to, she probably wouldn’t have left the swamp to go study in Rata Sum like she did, so she probably would’ve never become commander..

6.They're now a heart NPC/part of a string of quests. What does that involve?

She’s a researcher you find in some random cave in Echovald who is trying to bring back the Ascalonian Red Iris Flower. You basically get sent on a fetch quest to find plants and things that would help it become genetically stronger so it can survive in a non-cave environment. 

You can get a special extra achievement if you go to the Urban Battleground fractal and get a sample of the Red Iris Flower there. She will be incredibly excited to receive the specimen. 

9. What's an au for them you think could be fun to explore?

I mean I love exploring Biologist Vlixxa as an AU but in terms of other ones… 

What I said in 3 about Gunnar being the reason she was able to leave her home and eventually become the Commander makes me think of an AU where he isn’t around and she doesn’t leave her home. 

Without doing that she’d probably stay in that area for a while, maybe become a guide to help people get through the swamp area and protect it for travelers. She’d definitely have a pet bog drake, and maybe even be more like a ranger? (She still has mesmer magic though it’s less developed). Honestly this is kinda like an AU of the original floppy (When I first made her she was a ranger.) 

Another thing I do wonder about this AU is if she’d still be a girl in it or not.. She’d either be a girl but it took her a lot longer to figure out, or the most insanely obvious egg. Though I think that also depends on how old she is in this AU.
