Covas Beach, Viveiro (No. 13)
Galicia has preserved some of its dense forests. It is relatively unpolluted, and its landscapes composed of green hills, cliffs, and rias are generally different from what is commonly understood as Spanish landscape. Nevertheless, Galicia has some important environmental problems.
Deforestation and forest fires are a problem in many areas, as is the continual spread of the eucalyptus tree, a species imported from Australia, actively promoted by the paper industry since the mid-20th century. Galicia is one of the more forested areas of Spain, but the majority of Galicia's plantations, usually growing eucalyptus or pine, lack any formal management. Massive eucalyptus plantation, especially of Eucalyptus globulus, began in the Francisco Franco era, largely on behalf of the paper company Empresa Nacional de Celulosas de España (ENCE) in Pontevedra, which wanted it for its pulp. Galician photographer Delmi Álvarez began documenting the fires in Galicia in 2006 in a project called Queiman Galiza (Burn Galicia). Wood products figure significantly in Galicia's economy. Apart from tree plantations, Galicia is also notable for the extensive surface occupied by meadows used for animal husbandry, especially cattle, an important activity. Hydroelectric development in most rivers has been a serious concern for local conservationists during the last decades.
Fauna, most notably the European wolf, has suffered because of the actions of livestock owners and farmers, and because of the loss of habitats, whilst the native deer species have declined because of hunting and development.
Oil spills are a major issue. The Prestige oil spill in 2002 spilled more oil than the Exxon Valdez in Alaska.

At one point, this PDF/online document was set as my homepage for a week or two. It’s a nice compilation, from 2017, of recent artistic, academic, and activist work on the cultural importance of forests with special focus on decolonization; Indigenous voices; biosemiotics and “forest as community”; and Amazonian cosmology. The intent here seemed to be the mingling of research and art to explore the decolonization of ecological thought and the “emotional, socio-political, and eco-cultural” significance of forests in “an age of extinction.” It’s not always great (there are some kind of suspect, twee contributions from Euro-American), but there is also some good material here, especially about “forest as organism”; Indigenous justice in Brazil; cosmology; and the Amazon.

From the introduction:
Borrowing its title from Ursula K. Le Guin’s 1972 science fiction novella, The Word for World is Still Forest is composed in these pages as an homage to the forest as a turbulent and generative multinature. Throughout this book, we invite you to join us in traversing the mighty forests of Amazonia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Northwest, arriving in the old urban woods of Berlin, where this book was published. [...]
Moving from concepts of the forest as a thinking superorganism to the linear monocultural plantations and “concrete jungles” that threaten the life of global forests, you will encounter trees as companions, communities, entities, and providers; in other moments, they will appear as expert witnesses, data stories, or resourceful ancestors. Whether they occur as images, subjects, or architectures, the forests of this world will beckon you to remember that their destiny is entangled with yours. […] Since we began to work on this volume in 2014, the relevance  of Le Guin’s description of militarized, ecocidal violence has only continued to intensify. [...]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This homage to words and forests is followed by an essay from Pedro Neves Marques about the particularities of Amerindian multinaturalism that sharpens our sense of the forest as an ontological multiplicity teeming with relations, perspectives, and temporalities. [...]
That such forests and worlds are largely incommensurable with Eurocentric image-making technologies poses a serious challenge to understanding and solidarity by demanding that we learn “how to inhabit the space of the in-between, the interval between ‘worlds’ in order to contribute to a decolonization of the many worlds from the imposition of the ‘one world.’” This book is an attempt to open up a space for these transformations. [...]
Curator Dan Handel presents a paginated version of his research on wood as a vital aspect of forest mythologies and a driver of industrial resource management. By translating elements from his previous exhibitions into this volume, Handel contributes to a renegotiation of the metaphors and mechanisms that render the forest present in human habits of consumption, creativity,  and ideation.
Canadian forest ecologist Suzanne Simard examines how underground networks of fungi uptake nutrients of salmon brought from sea to river to land by grizzlies and wolves. Simard’s text summarizes her ongoing collaboration with researchers from various First Nations communities in British Columbia to offer a defense of nature as a tangled web rather than a taxonomical order. Accompanied by visualizations from forestry researcher Kevin Beiler, this contribution makes a plea for a more holistic approach to forestry science and urges us to “fundamentally transform the modern scientific image of nature as a resource.”
Remaining with the motif of the axe implicit in Castleman’s work, we follow Nonuya knowledge-elder Abel Rodríguez (also known as Mogaje Guihu) to the Middle Caquetá River region in the Colombian Amazon. He shares an oral narrative conveying the discovery and eventual felling of the Tree of Abundance, which relays the origin of social, territorial, and ecological inter-dependency in the Amazon; at the same time, this mythological narrative alludes to the beginning of labor, violence, and disease. Rodríguez’s storytelling was transcribed and edited in collaboration with Carlos Rodríguez from the Tropenbos International Colombia forest conservation group and the philosopher and editor Catalina Vargas Tovar.
An understanding of the Amazon as an anthropogenically cultivated multinature is further elaborated in the contribution by Brazilian architect, urbanist, and activist Paulo Tavares. His essay and richly annotated selection of archival photographs and contemporary cartographies expose the “politics of erasure” deployed by the Brazilian state against Indigenous peoples  and their lands in the twentieth century. Highlighting the hybrid literacies required by resistance movements fighting illegal logging, plantations, evictions, and development, Tavares shows that genocide and ecocide are often two sides of the same coin in struggles for land sovereignty. He also underscores the politi-cally significant thesis that many forests of the Amazon region are the result of Pre-Columbian domestication and cultivation practices. By rendering Amazonia palpable as the living ruin  of an “‘expanded polis,’ within which humans and nonhumans co-inhabit a common political space,” he infinitely complicates any comfortable dichotomies of city, civilization, and culture versus forest, wilderness, and nature. An interview with anthropologist Eduardo Kohn, based on his book How Forests Thinkand observations from his fieldwork in Ecuador, explores the philosophical implications of nonhuman thought. After a discussion about “thinking-with” multispecies semiotics, we conclude our conversation with questions about how to cultivate a forest-like mindfulness even in non-forest ecologies—a provocation  that we hope resonates through many other contributions in this book as well.
(End quote.)

-
Included is an essay by Pedro Neves Marques which, in my opinion, provides a nice and concise summary of “Amazonianist” scholarship, Amazonian cosmology and animism, and the work of Eduardo Viveiros de Castro. Viveiros de Castro’s work is celebrated for its respect for and attention to detail in Amazonian worldviews, and is often cited as an example of the importance of Amazonian/Indigenous “multinaturalism” and animism as alternatives to Western scientific naturalism.
Also, Paulo Tavares’s article here is - again, in my opinion - good and important. The Brazilian state denies that a genocide took place against the Waimiri Atroari people. But Tavares mapped the local forest region to clearly demonstrate that not only were the Waimiri Atroari forcibly removed, but that they also had a previously underreported and sophisticated system of agroecology and forest management.
Some of the editorial commentary can verge on twee Euro-American/Western mysticism and cultural appropriation, but the articles and essays themselves are nice. There is some questionable content occasionally referenced in the text - including some commentary from a Western academic who drinks ayahuasca - so take some of the material with a grain of salt. All-in-all, it’s an enjoyable read, though. If nothing else, there are some good citations and resources for further reading.

Mighty Mekong River
Correntes. Deixei-me guiar por elas num embalo suave. Durante 2 horas senti a força deste rio que é o 13 mais longo do mundo.
Castanha. É a cor das águas do Mekong durante a época das chuvas, devido à erosão das margens.
Vida.

FUSE VALLEY
Farfetch Partners With BIG To Build Art-filled HQ In Portugal
Visualizations by Lucian R
Farfetch HQ in Porto
Farfetch, the leading global technology platform for luxury fashion, seeks to further connect creators, curators, and consumers in a purpose-built urban fashion village on the slopes of Leça River in Porto. The 178,000 m2 art-filled site has been named FUSE VALLEY and is developed in collaboration with Portuguese real estate developer, Castro Group.
The future Farfetch HQ features 12 interconnected buildings that each represent the various elements of the company’s organization, with the design of each space tailored accordingly. Scheduled to break ground by early 2023, and open its doors in 2025, the new HQ is situated within the larger FUSE VALLEY site; also designed by BIG, the site of 24 buildings will be home to various tech companies, startups and services. BIG’s design seeks to amplify the exchange of ideas between the different aspects of the organization and create new opportunities for the circa 3,000 Farfetch employees based in Portugal, visitors, and locals.
José Neves, founder, CEO and Chairman of FARFETCH, says: “We are very excited about this project and the vision that Bjarke Ingels has presented to us, not only because of what it will mean as a milestone for the company, for our people, but also for the community. This project will be a revolution on the current concepts of workspaces, marked by its futuristic nature, by the orientation towards sustainability and well-being. It will be a space not only for FARFETCH, but for the entire community.”
According to Paulo Castro, CEO of CASTRO GROUP, “FUSE VALLEY is the perfect interpretation of our golden rule, applied to all our projects: location, innovation, sustainability, and technology. What we are going to do in Matosinhos is something unique and that puts this space on the international map of what is best done both in terms of sustainability and in terms of innovation. With this project, we intend to develop a smart city, or in this case, a smart valley”.
Conceived as a community village, FUSE VALLEY is organized around plazas, parks, and courtyards which are landscaped and programmed to extend the life inside the buildings to the outside. Like an urban fabric, the individual buildings rest on a series of urban terraces connecting the main road to the east, with the Leça River to the west. Along the central arrival axis, an urban alley opens all the way from the street to the river, featuring all the major public programs and amenities along the riverfront of Farfetchlobbies, an academy, an auditorium, canteen, and wellness facilities.
“Rather than a corporate office complex, Farfetch’s future home in FUSE VALLEY will be a lively urban ensemble bringing every curator, creator, customer and collaborator together in the most innovative new neighborhood of the city. The urban fabric will allow FUSE VALLEY to grow and expand organically, like a natural village,“ says Bjarke Ingels, Founder & Creative Director, BIG.
As a manmade extension of the hillside, the roofs of the new buildings rise and fall to create peaks and valleys, with slopes and terraces providing employees with generous spaces to enjoy breaks and host gatherings – surrounded by views of the river. Natural paths extend from the landscape to the roofscape, creating flexible wayfinding for people to move around the complex – both inside and out, and above, below, and within the building.
On the ground floor, the facades recede to expand the public realm, creating natural canopies to welcome visitors, collaborators, and customers. The chamfered corners of the buildings merge to create archways and openings between the courtyards that act like canvases for different artistic expressions, bringing color and texture to the streetscape.
Each building is tailored to its specific program, with gently-altered floorplans creating an equally lively and varied interior architectural experience:
“The individual buildings that constitute the various elements of the organization are connected to form large contiguous work environments – physically consolidated, but spatially varied to create a human-scale experience,“ says João Albuquerque, Partner in Charge, BIG.
Atelier-like attics with additional ceiling heights and open mezzanines are created by the sloping roofs of the buildings. Open connections extend from the attic mezzanines all the way to the ground, creating visual and physical connectivity across all floors.
The interior experience prioritizes an immersion in nature, providing a biophilic environment that aims to increase productivity and wellbeing. Similarly, the dense urban fabric and ample vegetation provides a naturally shaded, cooled environment.
The new FUSE VALLEY combines maximum connectivity with a varied visual and physical experience, stimulating human exchange and innovation.

“Tin Star” (2017)
Drama
Tumblr media
10 Episodes
Produced & Created by: Rowan Joffe
Featuring: Tim Roth, Christina Hendricks, Leanne Best, Christopher Heyerdahl, Roark Critchlow
There is a popular term being used at the moment, that this is the ‘Golden Age’ of television, which is a ridiculous thing to say, as that age was in the 1950s, when the idea of what television could be started to take shape. That was when some of the most original and cutting edge television was made, watching some of those programs can be very refreshing. There is also the attitude that we are in the best time of television where writers are the kings of the medium – this might be truer, but it is not a new idea. One thiing is for sure, there are more scripted shows than ever with a few of them being great, a larger number being very good, but a large amount being a complete waste of time. The trick is of course knowing which ones to start viewing as well as when to give up or stay with them. The beauty is that many of these series are only normally up to ten episodes so its not a long term commitment if they do not follow through on their initial promise.
That brings us to the latest drama featuring Tim Roth in the main role as an English police officer who has been transplanted to the Canadian Rockies, something that is already an original idea. Couple that with the opening ten minutes of the first episode, this is a show that digs its hooks into you and will not let go for its first season.
There is little real need to explain a plot with this show as it would remove any mystery or drama as this is show that really shouldn’t be spoiled at all.
“Tin Star” is based around former London police detective Jim Worth is the new police chief of Little Big Bear, a small town in the Canadian Rockies, where he has moved with his family to escape his past. The influx of migrant workers because of a new big oil company, headed by the mysterious Mrs. Bradshaw, forces Worth to confront the resulting wave of crime that threatens the town. Worth’s stand against the criminals results in vigilante groups attacking him and his family, leading Worth to slip into the violence of his past.
Many modern police dramas, particularly those on pay sites or cable channels will touch on family matters as well as any home life – this is mainly to broaden the main character’s appeal, as well as give depth to his life, making him three dimensional. The show may even create some kind of drama at home, making this an integral part of the plot. What “Tin Star” has done is to integrate the home and work life, making them interwined in a very natural way that causes almost all of the players to, at some time, interact with everyone else. It also negates the reason for the main character to have some kind of double life separating his work and home. This also means he can be as honest as he can be with the people most important in his life – this is something many stories will not do. Honesty in a television drama is something that is normally not used as a narrative device, in fact what this main character finds is that honesty is all he has left after the first few episodes. This is a person that has made some mistakes as well as lied to many people, this show illustrated in a stylised way what can happen when the chickens come home to roost.
“Tin Star” involves many different genres, it is political, it is definitely nourish, has action, involves minorities and uses its landscape as a fully fledged element that is rarely seen in this kind of show. What it doesn’t do, which many many shows do, is make the actual story a ‘slow burn’, the narrative moves along at a surprising pace. I found this refreshing, not only did it keep me interested but it also helped to maintain the point of the story – which I can say is very good. The main part of the story is completely resolved by the end of the last episode, as well as many of the subplots are fully explained. What is done, however, is that if there was a second season (which I believe there is) there is enough in the closing minutes to continue some kind of story – which is pretty fantastic.
The casting of the show, in part due to the nature of the transplanting of an English family to Canada is just great, and it may be in part due to the juxtaposition of many English accents around so many Canadian, as well as Native American, accents that seems to keep the show fresh each episode. With Tim Roth in the lead as the Sheriff you get immediate legitimacy as well as an actor that knows his craft, can play many different emotions as well as someone who is extremely physical both being able to inhabit a space specifically as well as not being afraid to really commit to a part in a unique way. The cast is expansive but I loved seeing Christina Hendricks playing someone who is more than the she seems, particularly in the first few episodes. In fact she has such a good story arc that I hope she returns at some point for any subsequent seasons. Lastly, there is the Canadian charater actor Christopher Heyerdahl, who genre fans will know from his years of work on many different science fiction and horror shows, here he plays a man who has secrets that are revealed slowy and as such subtle changes in performance is required, Heyerdahl is more than capable of showing us these.
Rowan Joffe the creator of “Tin Star” is an experienced writer/director, who has worked with many top talents as well as being behind some pretty good movies. He has created a show that is compelling, as well as fitting in with his previous work. His work often involves people that have become isolated for a variety of reasons, that incorporate a variety of genres, which is unique in itself. This is probably why “Tin Star” has been such a success in terms of the finished show – he has also used the location as well as showing how this landscape affects the characters as well as the motivations behind some of the arrivals to the town. Some of the same themes that are presened here are also in the new film “Wind River” (2017) to a lesser or greater extent – I am sure that is a coincidence.
I recommend this show highly, it is ten episodes of well written, directed and acted drama you will see this year. There are top performances, especially from Roth who shines here in a role that seems like it was written for him, but that’s just how good an actor he is. Seek this out now.

Covas Beach, Viveiro (No. 10)
The name Galicia derives from the Latin toponym Callaecia, later Gallaecia, related to the name of an ancient Celtic tribe that resided north of the Douro river, the Gallaeci or Callaeci in Latin, or Καλλαϊκoί (Kallaïkoí) in Greek. These Callaeci were the first tribe in the area to help the Lusitanians against the invading Romans. The Romans applied their name to all the other tribes in the northwest who spoke the same language and lived the same life.
The toponymy of the name has been studied since the 7th century by authors such as Isidore of Seville, who wrote that "Galicians are called so, because of their fair skin, as the Gauls", relating the name to the Greek word for milk. (See the etymology of the word galaxy.) In the 21st century, some scholars (J.J. Moralejo, Carlos Búa) have derived the name of the ancient Callaeci either from Proto-Indo-European *kl(H)-no- 'hill', through a local relational suffix -aik-, also attested in Celtiberian, so meaning 'the hill (people)'; or either from Proto-Celtic *kallī- 'forest', so meaning 'the forest (people)'. In any case, Galicia, being per se a derivation of the ethnic name Kallaikói, means 'the land of the Galicians'.

By Linda Murphy One day of walking could be the first step to leading a healthier life. Students throughout the Fall River public school system took that step for International Walk to School Day. This is the eighth year in a row the city has taken part in the walk and Fall River is the only school district in the state to have 100% of its schools participating, said Marcia Picard, executive director/school wellness coordinator for Greater Fall River Partners for a Healthier Community. In fact, it’s the only district to hold that distinction for all eight years, added Picard. “We’ve been recognized at the State House for this,” Picard said. Early Wednesday morning, a group of James Tansey Elementary School students, parents, teachers and school administrators gathered at upper North Park in preparation for the walk down Hood Street to the school on Ray Street. “The kids look forward to it every year,” said Tansey principal Chris Audette, who was there along with physical education teacher Matt Wordell. Fifty to 60 of the school’s students were at the park and Audette said they pick up even more students along the route. The times of the walk varied from school to school. Some schools, such as Tansey and Letourneau Elementary School, met at nearby parks for the walk with students. Other schools planned the walk into the day’s activities with PE classes walking around the gyms or around the schools. Letourneau led the way with 96.8% of students participating, according to statistics released by the school department. Among other schools at the top, Henry Lord Community School followed with 96.7%, then William S. Greene Elementary with 96.6%, Morton Middle School with 96.5%, Viveiros Elementary with 96.1% and Fonseca Elementary with 96%. B.M.C. Durfee High had 93.4% participation. As she met up with the students at Tansey, Picard said she was happy with the turnout for the walk. “This doesn’t make them healthy, walking one day, but it does shine a light on the fact that kids who walk to school are more attentive and ready to learn,” said Picard. According to the National Center for Safe Routes to School, “The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommends that children and adolescents get one hour or more of physical activity each day. Research suggests that physically active kids are more likely to become healthy, physically active adults, underscoring the importance of developing the habit of regular physical activity early.”

River Ridge Church, Hurricane, West Virginia
BY: @riverridgewv @silling @prayconstruction
