Muncie, located in East Central Indiana, approximately 50 miles northeast of Indianapolis, is the county seat of Delaware County. Originally named Buckongahelas Town after a notable Delaware Chief, Muncie had a population of 65,195 as of the 2020 Census, down from 70,085 in 2010. This trading post was later renamed Muncietown and designated the Delaware County seat in 1827. The name was officially shortened to Muncie in 1845, and the town was incorporated as a city in 1865.

The early 19th century saw the Lenape ceding their lands to the federal government under the Treaty of St. Mary's in 1818, agreeing to move further west by 1821. This opened the area to new settlers around 1820, shortly before public lands became available. Munsee Town, later Muncietown, increased and became a commercial hub for local farmers.

The arrival of the Indianapolis and Bellefontaine Railroad in 1852 significantly boosted Muncie's connectivity, linking it to broader markets and facilitating the transport of agricultural products and goods. Muncie was incorporated as a town in 1854 and achieved city status in 1865, with John Brady serving as its first mayor.

The discovery of natural gas in the Muncie area in 1886 marked a turning point for the city. This natural resource spurred industrial development and attracted various businesses, transforming Muncie into a manufacturing center. Before the gas boom, Muncie was predominantly agricultural, with its economy centered on farming and local trade.
