Being haunted by the thought of Ashley having to relive the trauma of Eden Prime and losing most of her unit if shes sent with Captain Kirrahee and his 3rd Infiltration Regiment on Virmire and has to see him and most of the other salarian soldiers die if Shepard doesn't sabotage the geth defenses.

Having to experience again the horrour of seeing her fellow soldiers being killed by the geth, feeling as if fate itself was punishing her for the "sins" of her family's past by making her experience that fateful day on Eden Prime all over again.

And on top of all that, the burden of Kaidan's death on her mind if Shepard saves her :(

the ship murmurs around him but the crew doesn't even whisper; heads down, jobs done, feet heavy as if to remind the deck they're still here.

he's doing his job, too, in the mess to be a shoulder if anyone wants to talk but he's alone right now as he sets a cup of his mother's tea to steep. Orange. Spice. the pale green tint lost to the black interior of the mug. but warm in his hands

after their report, Shepard had retreated to the small space under engineering that had been her bunk, before the Captain had handed over the cabin. he'd sat on the stairs turning over what she'd told him with her eyes like mercury and salt searing his bones.

the Bomb was the mission.

and no one life is more sacred went unsaid

and that was how she lived and that was how she'd die while he packed up the locker to send it on

her steps are light out of the lift and there's no ignoring the tone of her low voice, pitched to carry and as she passes, the conversations pick back up. they've had their moment, her shadow reminds them, the mission goes on moments later, Normandy is humming and the stars are streaking by Serviceman Waaberi settles on the bench across from him, a fragrant bowl of some soup in hand and they give a nod even as they carry on a comm with Addison.

Kaidan swallows the bittersweet dregs and comes back from Virmire

Um, whaaaaaat? Since when am I romancing Ashley?

Shoot. I was trying not to romance Liara since she carries through into the other 2 games and I didn't want her to have to watch me romance it up with Tali later on. Me and Shep are sensitive souls, after all, and we don't want to hurt Liara like that!

So I panicked and confirmed my romance with Ashley so to hopefully head Liara off at the pass. Darn it.

Well, I guess Virmire is going to be especially tragic when it gets here because I'm not losing Kaidan.

Ashley: "What's a Virmire?"

I don't know, gang, should I just go all in for a tragic romance with Ash? I guess that could be compelling, right? 🤔🤷‍♀️😉

Just redid Virmire and what I liked about those choices and the devastation to your team there was that there are a couple of different emotional threads being pulled here.

The first is that the Wrex decision is one of the first big ones that really rewards paragon or renegade behaviours. If you have been too measured you cannot save him. That is a gut punch if you have played it safe! It subtly tells us that we have to, as Shepard, be willing to either be overly generous in our approach or ready to work outside of the system if we want to be able to truly change what is happening around us. I think it’s a neat moment. I’ve had many playthroughs where I wasn’t there at that point.

The other thing is the big decision between two companions, who I think people forget sometimes have also been primed by the narrative as your main guys. What I think is often forgotten is there are TWO decision points here - who arms the bomb and who you save. You have a practical choice (it makes sense that Kaiden arms the bomb as the senior officer and Ashley is on front lines from a skillset pov, though either can do either job and are skilled enough to do so) but then you also get the choice of where you go to support.

That second one is a much more emotionally driven decision to me. The mission is to make sure the bomb goes off - Shep can justify it, but going to the front and trusting the specialist is a bending of the orders. They should see the job through. But maybe they’re emotionally compromised! Maybe they’re already in love with that person! Maybe they want to save as many people as possible in the evacuation! This combined with the earlier decisions is where the meat is.

It’s an old game, but there’s some neat stuff in there

Finished Mass Effect 1 once again yesterday.

I chose to save Ashley for a change. Boy that was so hard to leave him there... I'm not used to Renegade Shepard, he can be such an ass ;__;

idk if this has ever been said before but imagine in me3 if instead of kai leng it had been the one left behind on virmire. imagine if cerberus had gone to the ruins and collected their body as a future bargaining chip. except cerberus doesn't restore ash's/kaidan's memories so shep is the one left with the pain and guilt of their past friendship. shep is the one left with the agony of having to put down their old squad mate. of being the reason for their second death

or imagine in me3 with the citadel dlc that instead of shep's clone it had been the one left behind on virmire. of course they wouldn't have been able to go along with the stolen identity plot but just imagine the drama. ash/kaidan coming out of the shadows, memories in tact. "what did you think was gonna happen after you left me to die?" shep trying to save them as they're falling from the normandy because, despite everything, this was their squad mate. shep then having to watch them die all over again

imagine the virmire survivor reexperiencing the guilt of surviving tenfold. feeling as if they somehow stole the other's life. their possible happy ending. "that could've been me" "this could've been them" the other is going through this pain because of them whether the other realises it or not. and after watching the other die a second time, they're left feeling empty. somehow it's their fault
