Cases study of Social media transformation in China

Chinese young generations are the main stream users of internet and social media, and also the main consumers of service online. They make the content and values to the development of social media and advertise themselves, post their daily lives, and they choose the new media rather than the traditional ones. The transformation brings more challenges for traditional professionals and shows the convergence of new media, the participatory culture development and the users of social media who are benefits by the hybrid economies, and decentralisation.

The advertising spent on china social media reached 6 billion USD in 2016 (Emarket 2017). The social media and streaming live models are classically representing the new web 2.0 has developed recently in China, and show how the convergence works among the networked publics (Varnelis, 2012). “Wanghong” is the new term of social media in China which means the celebrity of internet (BBC News, 2017). The term was born with the positive way but became negative meaning later. At the very beginning of the story, the first generations of “wanghong” were from grassroots and benefits by their pretty faces very much. The reason of being decay was the celebrities in the industry had become more replicable, no highlights, and they were always less characteristic but the pretty faces with plastic surgery. However, “wanghong” still bring real money to the social media platform with the hybrid economy. They have huge of amount of followers and fans who are consumers of the virtual products on the platform, the products cost cents to hundreds USD each time and “wanghong” receive the products as gifts and the gifts are used for calculating their incomes by the social media or streaming live platform, in other words, both of them share the incomes from the followers of the celebrities. Additionally, some of the celebrities are also connected with TMSs and PGSs (Dijck, 2013) . They started to corporate with the play-game streaming live platforms with so-called game skills, however, they do not necessarily win the games while playing, the targets are the young people and in-door boys, the fans express it is entertaining to watch a pretty girl playing games for them. After the first generations, some businessmen started to realise the opportunities under the celebrities, as some celebrities become famous occasionally and randomly. After that, “wanghong” in China are employed by professional management companies, and have contracts with the other social media, such like TMSs and PGSs and to promote and advertise products online, some of them even advertise the shops of themselves. The same situations occur in Korea, PGSs are very popular in Korea, and Koreans were several times the champions of e-sports world championship (Manisier, 2015). This model has already been a normal way to create the celebrities who promote the trade online to bring huge money income by the hybrid economy in Asia.

The development of New media 2.0 is not just a transform for celebrities but also a threat to journalism professionals (Alejandro, 2010) . The content on social media between professional publicity especially online content have become boundary-less and blurring for the public (Fuchs, 2014) . Sometimes, both of them carry news value, even the value of hard news. On FEB 18th 2017, a piece of video spread rapidly on social media in China, people got shocked by the pictures full of violence and bloodshed in the video -A man was killed by another man with cutting off victim’s head by a chopping knife, it was not in a fake movie, it was in the real life and captured by people pass by. The people called the police at beginning of the conflict, but it was too late for the victim and nobody stopped the murderer with a weapon. The whole story was recorded by stranger’s phone and spread widely online and go viral. The journalism professionals posted the news what happened in the video later, and restored the truth to the public, but they had to use the pictures of the video, because it was a relatively complete evidence they only had, of course, they edited the video in order to reduce the cause of sickness for the audience. However, the timely news by social media had already been posted online before the news by journalism professionals and got re-posted much more than the journalist's works. The topics of how close between the journalists and users of social media recently in China and why nobody stopped the murderer had been discussed during those weeks. (There is another example that can be showed and linked in the following statement as the previous one is too scary.) On Mar 4th, 2017, a young man insulted at a woman, robbed her phone and pushed her off the metro in Beijing. The video posted online anonymously and with no commence, and many celebrities re-posted the video until the police noticed the man in the video and arrested him within 24 hours after the post. Interestingly, the suspect saw the video online and tried to explain his behaviour on social media, however, it made him exposed to the police. Social media is getting more powerful and effective than the media professionals, and the media is being much more decentralisation, some audiences prefer to engage the news and affairs rather than having the left-over by professionals (Yu, 2011).

Streaming live platforms and grassroots video web substitute the entertaining function of televisions in China, since more young people likely to watch content online rather than the TV shows (Yu, 2011) . One of the reason is the verifying regulations by State Administration of radio, film and television are very restricting for the TV programme, as a result of lacking creativity due to the restrictions, the TV shows in China are less competitive with the social media online or videos by UGCs (The economics, 2017). The topics in the show are always controversial and sharp, and some are little tricky and amusing a lot to audiences, such like “Would you be a single mum If you have a choice?” “Would you tell parents if you come out closet?” “Does the world need a superhero or not?” “Would you agree with the world without the lie?” and so forth. The topics are related to the current affairs or the hot topics in China, and the show refuses to give the final answers to the audience, but the ideas by debaters and attitudes from both sides, moreover, audience can comment “bullet curtain” during the show playing. The show provides a remarkable entertaining programme but seriously thinking about the society for Chinese youth and it is also successful in advertising income due to its high rates of view. The producer of the show Dong Ma was the former producer in CCTV China (China Central Television) which is the predominant state TV station and he quit from in an interviewing programme that interviews politics and celebrities. He said that the social media makes us entertaining, and he recommends “Amusing ourselves to death”, and why the model of “ U can U bibi” is successful in China because they break the knowledge structures by people from different classes, the key messages of the show is not to amuse young people, but to reach a consensus about the society. He uses entertainment as a carrier that carries topics about the society for the young generation. The show recently leads to a programme revolution and many criticism and praises and contributes the cultural economy which is in Chinese’s public sphere (Ball State Daily, 2017).

The cases study showed how new media 2.0 shapes the media industries and the society in China, and the professionals who operate or produce the media products, and the ways of young generations utilise and deeply engage with the new media. The study finds the phenomenon has impacted on many media fields like UGCs, TMSs, journalism, traditional entertainment and so forth. Moreover, the development of new media is both challenges and opportunities for traditional media professionals, TV producers, Journalists and also business online.

Growing Up Guide Pup’s First Year

Now that Growing Up Guide Pup is a non-profit, how about a reflection about 2015 and what we have done since forming as a 501(c)3. When we filed for tax exemption in 2014, we had a web series that had not seen new material in a few years and we were ready to go. We had questions about how we could serve the community. We had dreams to make a difference as a new type of non-profit.

Lets start with the web series. We have been experimenting in 2015 with two different forms of Growing Up Guide Pup videos. The original video motif simply is called Patrick Season 3. The other video collection is called GUGP 2.0. Both enable GUGP to do different things without interfering with one another. I find 2.0 to have pieces of what the shorter versions of GUGP used to be like in the two prior seasons. We also changed our Patrick episodes to over 20 minutes each. Our original series has been restructured for entertainment and education value. We now are letting the stories play out and not releasing episodes until the stories are farther developed. We know this is totally different than before, but we think it reflects the authenticity more poignantly. Growing Up Guide Pup has been nominated for “Best Family” at the Vancouver WebFest coming this March.

Now lets talk about our blogs. In the last six months of 2015 we have acquired bloggers! We are happy to announce we have a team of bloggers in place to put out service dog material every week. We put out 24 blogs in 2015 covering all kinds of topics. With six bloggers (including Ricki), even more material is coming for 2016. On top of that we have a myriad of guest bloggers who already contributed and are welcome to contribute to GUGP again in the future. Our biggest success came from one of our board members who is also a service dog user. Colt wrote a blog entitled “Pet or Service Dog, That is the Question” and it got shared over 1,000 times on Facebook. We even gave permission for a ADA community office to share this particular blog on their website by request. We look forward to challenging ourselves more and see how many more blogs may go viral and get important information into cyberspace about service dogs.

In 2015 we set up our “Take the Service Dog Quiz” at three separate events. All were dog related events so most of the people were dog enthusiasts. We were able to meet a lot of people and tested out our quizzes on adults and kids. We noticed the kids were more informed than their parents on many occasions which was interesting. We also put the these quizzes on our website which spread like hot cakes resulting in more than 1,000 participants in one week. We learned that people like these quizzes and we are planning to do more of them in 2016. The data we gain from these quizzes allows us to gauge the publics understanding of service dog topics. This data can be used to assist Growing Up Guide Pup and our evaluation about what is known and what needs more awareness.

In 2015 we got the new GUGP website up! Every video we have ever made can be found with a few clicks! All the episodes are organized and easy to navigate. If you have not looked at the ease of navigation go watch GUGP 2.0, Season 1, Season 2, and Season 3 and see for yourself!

You may be asking so what about 2016? We have many new episodes, blogs, quizzes, and live events coming of course! We also will continue to build relationships with more service dog teams, organizations, and people in the community and reflect that in our expanding material. We also have a bunch of service dog videos of a different nature we will be experimenting with to educate about service dog topics. Our goal for 2016 is to do what we have already been doing, but just do it better. Lets not forget about a certain GSD named Patrick and his continual preparation to become a guide dog for the blind. Will the big eared guy have the skills required. We think so, but you will have to keep tuning in to find out.
