Vinod Kumar Goenka: A renowned personality in the India Real Estate Industry
The journey of Vinod Kumar Goenka from an athlete to a business tycoon
Early Life
Vinod Goenka is the Managing Director and Chairman of the company DB Realty and is a known figure in the Indian Real Estate business. He has had a remarkable career with more than three decades of experience in real estate, hospitality and industrial industries and has solidified himself as a multitasker and a talented entrepreneur and businessman.
Tumblr media
Vinod Kumar Goenka has had a humble beginning. He was born in the late nineteen fifties in Kolkata (previously known as Calcutta) and relocated to Mumbai (previously Bombay) with his family at six years old. He started his education at Green Lawns High School and later continued his education at Jamnabai Narsee School and Campion School.
While he was focused on his education, he was also a good sportsperson. He competed in various sports at a national level. His most significant achievements were in the 100-metre sprint which he completed in 11.5 seconds, a 200-metre sprint which he completed in 23.5 seconds and an unbelievable long jump of 6.31 metres. His sporting achievements in addition to his flawless education achievements helped him portray himself as a young man who was incredibly dedicated, disciplined and a force to be reckoned with.
Unfortunately, his dreams of making it to the Asian Games and representing his country were shattered when he suffered from a muscle injury forcing him to drop out of the sprint races and long jump. However, his dedication and discipline were nothing in comparison to his resilience. He took it in his stride and continued to discover other sports he could pursue.
Vinod Kumar Goenka started his professional career at the young of nineteen by joining his father in the family-run real estate business known as Conwood Constructions in the nineteen eighties. Presently, the family real estate business boasts over 20 million square feet of developments. The success of the company is proof of his excellent entrepreneurial skills.
The Rise of DB Realty
Over the years after starting his entrepreneurial journey with Conwood Constructions, Vinod Kumar Goenka joined hands with Shahid Balwa in 2007 which led to the start of DB Realty. This partnership resulted in a drastic change in his overall success and led the company to achieve new heights.
Under the joint leadership and vision of Shahid Balwa and Vinod Kumar Goenka, the company achieved success which was considered challenging for any business. They managed to get DB Realty listed in both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in 2010. This remarkable victory further strengthened the vision of Vinod Kumar Goenka and also sent a strong message to the stakeholders of the company's future successes and its commitment towards trust and integrity.
Following the listing, the company DB Realty has managed to achieve great success and has established itself as one of the largest real estate companies in India. They have completed many influential projects in commercial, residential and gated community projects in the past and show no signs of slowing down. Under the visionary leadership of Vinod Kumar Goenka, they are expected to grow by exponential profit margins in the next few years.
The rise of DB Hospitality
Vinod Kumar Goenka with Shahid Balwa initiated a diversification from residential and commercial projects to further grow into the hospitality sector. This gave birth to DB Hospitality. Shahid Balwa, with his years of experience, opened new venture opportunities for DB Hospitality. Their first successful project was Le Royal Meridien Hotel in Mumbai (now rebranded and known as The Hilton International Airport Hotel, Mumbai). Serving customers successfully for more than fifteen years, the landmark hotel was the start of their partnership venture and led to the formation of DB Realty Ltd.
The partnership and diversification into the hospitality sector continued to be successful by contributing to the existing portfolio of DB Realty Ltd. The construction and grand opening of Hotel Grand Hyatt in Goa in the exquisite area of Bambolim further proved the dedicated and loyal commitment shown by both Vinod Kumar Goenka and Shahid Balwa. They continue to identify and innovate on their future projects bringing the best in the world.
Overall, the successes and vision of Vinod Kumar Goenka are a beautiful testament to a man’s unfaltering dedication, commitment and resilience.

No early hearing of CBI's appeal against 2G acquittals
The Delhi high court on Tuesday refused to grant early hearing on the Central Bureau of Investigation's appeal challenging the acquittal of former Union telecom minister A Raja and others in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case.
Tumblr media

The court was hearing the CBI's plea seeking to prepone the date of hearing from October 24 in its appeal against the acquittal of all the accused.
Justice A K Chawla said the matter would be heard on the date already fixed and added that it would be expected of all the parties to join the hearing.
Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain, representing the CBI, submitted that early hearing was needed as the country was on the verge of facing a huge amount of arbitration under bilateral investment treaties.
The application was opposed by the counsel for the accused.
A special court had on December 21, 2017, acquitted Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and others in CBI and ED cases related to the scam.
It had also acquitted 17 others, including DMK supremo M Karunanidhi's wife Dayalu Ammal, Vinod Goenka, Asif Balwa, film producer Karim Morani, P Amirtham and Sharad Kumar, Director of Kalaignar TV in the ED case.
On the same day, the trial court had also acquitted former telecom secretary Siddharth Behura, Raja's erstwhile private secretary R K Chandolia, Unitech Ltd MD Sanjay Chandra and three top executives of Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (RADAG) -- Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair, in the CBI's 2G case.
Swan Telecom promoters Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod Goenka and directors of Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt Ltd Asif Balwa and Rajiv Agarwal were also acquitted in the CBI case.
On March 19 last year, the ED had approached the high court challenging the special court's order acquitting all the accused.
A day later, the CBI too had challenged in the high court the acquittal of the accused in the case.
The ED, in its charge sheet, had alleged that Rs 200 crore was paid by STPL promoters to DMK-run Kalaignar TV.
The CBI had alleged that there was a loss of Rs 30,984 crore to the exchequer in allocation of licences for the 2G spectrum which were scrapped by the top court on February 2, 2012.
Special Judge O P Saini, however, had held that the prosecution had "miserably failed" to prove the charges.
The special court, which was set up on March 14, 2011, for hearing 2G cases exclusively, had also acquitted Essar Group promoters Ravi Kant Ruia and Anshuman Ruia and six others in a separate case arising out of the 2G scam probe.
In the CBI case, Raja, Kanimozhi and 15 others were tried under provisions of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act dealing with offences of criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery, using as genuine fake documents, abusing official position, criminal misconduct by public servant and taking bribes.

2G scam case: CBI appeal infructuous in view of new anti-graft law, A Raja tells HC
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/2g-scam-case-cbi-appeal-infructuous-in-view-of-new-anti-graft-law-a-raja-tells-hc/
2G scam case: CBI appeal infructuous in view of new anti-graft law, A Raja tells HC
Former Union telecom minister A Raja on Monday told the Delhi High Court that the CBI‘s appeal against his and others’ acquittal in the 2G spectrum scam case has become infructuous with the coming of the new anti-corruption law.
Senior advocate Abhishek M Singhvi, appearing for Raja, told the court that the graft charges levelled against him and others in the case have been omitted in the new Prevention of Corruption Act of 2018 and therefore, prosecution in the instant matter cannot go on.
Apart from Raja, his then private secretary R K Chandolia and former telecom secretary Siddharth Behura have also raised the issue in separate applications filed by them.
During the brief hearing before Justice Brijesh Sethi, the CBI contended that the applications were not sustainable as this specific issue had been raised in the replies filed in response to the agency’s appeal.
However, the CBI’s stand was opposed by Singhvi who said this specific issue, of what happens to older cases in light of the new law, has been referred to the high court by a trial court dealing with a corruption matter and is still pending here.
Besides that, the changes in the new PC Act have also been challenged in the Supreme Court where it is still pending, he said, adding that in the present circumstances, the high court may have to refer the issue to the apex court.
Justice Sethi, after hearing the brief arguments, listed the matter for further hearing on January 31.
The CBI and the Enforcement Directorate have challenged the acquittal of all the individuals and companies in the 2G scam corruption and money laundering cases by the trial court.
The CBI had also filed an appeal challenging the acquittal of Essar Group promoters Ravi Kant Ruia and Anshuman Ruia and six others in a separate case arising out of the 2G scam probe.
A special court on December 21, 2017 had acquitted Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and others in CBI and ED cases related to the scam. Swan Telecom promoters Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod Goenka and directors of Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt Ltd Asif Balwa and Rajiv Agarwal were also acquitted in the CBI case.
On March 19, 2018, the ED had approached the high court challenging the special court’s order acquitting all the accused.
A day later, the CBI too had challenged in the high court the acquittal of the accused in the case.
The ED, in its charge sheet, had alleged that Rs 200 crore was paid by STPL promoters to DMK-run Kalaignar TV.

Special Judge O P Saini (now retired), however, held that the prosecution had “miserably failed” to prove the charges. The special court, which was set up on March 14, 2011 for hearing 2G cases exclusively, had also acquitted Ruias and others in a separate case arising out of the 2G scam probe.

Arun Jaitley‘s “proximity” to the media, to put it mildly, was New Delhi’s worst-kept secret. Actually, South Delhi’s worst-kept secret, because beyond the southern borders of the BJP headquarters, nobody cared a flying fig for the man whose mass base, as Arun Shourie once put it, consisted of “six journalists” (here, here).
Jaitley’s “affable” nature, his “telegenic face”, his “articulation”, his “helpful nature”—adjectives poured into his funeral pyre—was shorthand for one of the most well-oiled PR machineries in Lutyens Delhi, which at one level enabled a pompous unelected, unelectable, politician to grandstand on the “tyranny of the unelected“.
At another level, of course, it was the cover for “environment-friendly journalism”: the source of motivated plants against political rivals, vicious gossip against party colleagues—and “papers” which the TV studio warriors picked up from the “Todarmal Lane School of Journalism” during the day and presented as “exclusives” at 9 pm.
As an Economic Times journalist tweeted at the height of the UPA-II “scams”, it was only fair that these media houses gave Arun Jaitley a byline for their “exposes”.
Guess you didn’t hear the words “Cash for Votes” over the weekend?
***
Handing Arun Jaitley the Information and Broadcasting portfolio in 2014, on top of finance, was, therefore, a masterstroke by Narendra Modi in the manufacture of consent for majoritarian excesses. There was now a single window for controlling licenses and permissions, and for unleashing the taxman or keeping them at bay.
Fall in line, or else.
Phone calls ensured who would be Editor or not, which anchor which front which show and take what line, which corporate could start a channel. Greenhorn “political editors” were placed in organisations with the dexterity of a bonsai artist, a process which had begun in 2004 but gained greater currency with the dawn of civilisation in 2014.
Little wonder, Jaitley earned the sobriquet “Bureau Chief“, for the “extraordinary influence he wields at two large-selling national dailies where his favourite journalists run political bureaus” to start with, but a task so onerous and performed with such aplomb over time, that it now takes two possibly more.
Guess you didn’t hear the words “Electoral Bonds“, possibly the most corrupt scheme unleashed by the Modi government to lubricate Indian politics, over the weekend?
***
Little wonder, therefore, that Arun Jaitley’s death resulted in a welter of personal grief from reporters, editors, anchors, and owners almost all of them serving in the National Capital Region, and most of whom dropped any sense of distance or detachment from their friend, source, mentor, benefactor, headhunter—and walking mate.
Since this is the age of “Om Shanti”, very few journalists could say “Rest in Peace” like Sankarshan Thakur of The Telegraph, and the freelance writer Swati Chaturvedi.
***
Since this is the age of preening, few could even admit that they didn’t know Jaitley, the journalist turned comic Akash Banerjee being one.
***
It’s one thing for someone like Rajat Sharma of India TV who knew Jaitley for nearly 50 years from college, or Jaitley’s adversary from his students’ union days, Vinod Sharma of Hindustan Times, to express a genuine sense of loss.
But for a Bhupendra Chaubey of CNN News18 to bring up his school? Seriously.
***
For the likes of former journalists Kanchan Gupta and Swapan Dasgupta, it was the loss of a “mentor” figure, whatever that means.
***
For the now legendary Navika Kumar of Times Now and former NDTV presenter Barkha Dutt it was an inexplicably a lot more, although by day’s end, Dutt couldn’t understand what the hoo-ha was all about.
***
Supriya Shrinate, the ET Now presenter who quit to contest the 2019 general elections wrote an elaborate panegyric on Facebook.
***
For Sudhir Chaudhary of Zee News, it was an occasion to demonstrate the “proximity” with a recent selfie.
***
More than one journalist suggested having had a meal with the great foodie.
***
For the younger breed of 1990s journalists, it was time to remember the hand-holding on the beat or at the durbar.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
***
Surprisingly, or maybe not, the more restrained and therefore the more revealing, tributes came from Prabhu Chawla of The New Indian Express, and Rahul Kanwal of Aaj Tak.
***
Initially, Archis Mohan of Business Standard took the high moral ground of not speaking ill of the dead but soon had to point out the obvious: Jaitley’s role in “plotting the rise of our current rulers”.
***
A surprising voice of sanity in the pappi-jhappi fest was Abhijit Majumdar, the former Mail Today editor who now runs a website.
***
Only Rohini Singh formerly of The Economic Times went on record to show that Arun Jaitley disliked her.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
***
But more than a few journalists went out of their way to point to the devious, insidious, behind-the-scenes role Arun Jaitley played in their careers or organisations.
***
Not surprisingly, given the fawning media culture in spawning which Arun Jaitley had a major role, Naveen Kapoor of ANI had to dutifully retweet a standard BJP tribute with the certificate “great tribute”.
***
And there was some poetry too.
***
The owners piped in too: Anant Goenka of The Indian Express, Raghav Bahl of The Quint, and Shekhar Gupta of The Print.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
***
But by day’s end, it was difficult for most journalists to separate the personal from the political, save S. Prasannarajan of Open magazine, and Shekhar Iyer, former political editor of Deccan Herald and Hindustan Times.
***
It took mostly journalists from outside South Delhi—Jency Jacob, Kavitha Rao, Parth M.N—to point out how all this outpouring was cringe-worthy.

45 tweets on Arun Jaitley by reporters, editors, presenters and owners, is all it takes to understand journalism, Delhi style: the scams, the papers, the gossip, the plugs, and the headline management Arun Jaitley's "proximity" to the media, to put it mildly, was New Delhi's worst-kept secret. 2G case verdict: Prosecution failed miserably, says judge
Special court judge OP Saini while pronouncing the 2G verdict said the prosecution has miserably failed to prove any charge, declaring all the accused were "not guilty" in the case.
The scam came to the limelight in 2010 over alleged irregularities in allocation of 2G spectrum by former telecom ministers A Raja.

Apart from Kanizmozhi, the Enforcement Directorate(ED) had named DMK supremo M Karunanidhi's wife Dayalu Ammal an accused in the case in which it had alleged that Rs 200 crore was paid by Swan Telecom (P) Ltd (STPL) promoters to DMK-run Kalaignar TV.
