what do you recommend for pre-70s horror? 👀
well of course you have the classic monster flicks like phantom of the opera (1925), frankenstein (1931), bride of frankenstein (1935), the curse of frankenstein (1957), the invisible man (1933), creature from the black lagoon (1954), nosferatu (1922), dracula (1931), and dracula (1958). house on haunted hill (1959) is a classic and such a good fun mystery horror. you've also got night of the living dead (1968) if you want zombies and a good thrill with a good message. the innocents (1961) if you want a bit more mystery but with more serious melodrama this time. the comedy of terrors (1963) is a good one if you want comedy and two guys (The horror guys of the time aka peter lorre and vincent price) getting into hijinks and shenanigans. the city of the dead (1960) is good for an atmospheric witchy / ghost town horror and stars christopher lee (another horror icon of this time). the cabinet of dr. caligari (1920) is THE horror film and nearly every horror film after it took from it and it is a huge inspiration throughout history and is seen by many as the first true horror film especially when looking at it's cultural significance + it's a great gothic german expressionist horror with a killer lead character who we all love. if you think you'd enjoy more edgar allen poe adaptations starring vincent price (because i know i do) there's the masque of the red death (1964), the pit and the pendulum (1961), house of usher (1960), and the raven (1963). for extra vincent price there's also the haunted palace (1963) which is fun if you enjoy gothic romance horror and want to see a man being deranged and strange, the bat (1959) which is another murder mystery, and the tingler (1959) which you should just see for yourself i think! the hound of the baskervilles (1959) is a sherlock adaptation starring christopher lee again And peter cushing (who you will find in maaanyyy movies of this time yaaayy we love them!) + it's a classic hammer horror film! night tide (1961) which is a spooky atmospheric seaside horror about a maybe-mermaid. and last but not least for now, black sunday (1960) which again i think you just have to see for yourself! and honestly that goes for all of these recs because as hard as i try to give a very small description about them to peak someone's interest it's way too hard to do that and actually be successful at it... just trust me <3 also here is an additional list of just every pre-70s horror film i've seen so far

Peter Cushing: Vampire Slayer, Master Sleuth and Monster Creator
Tumblr media
Source: BBC
From his portrayal as the mad Baron Frankenstein to relentless vampire hunter Van Helsing, Peter Cushing delivered captivating and iconic performances throughout his film career. He was usually cast opposite fellow horror icon Christopher Lee. The two would share the screen one final time as co-narrators in a documentary about Hammer Films, "Flesh and Blood: The Hammer Heritage of Horror," shortly before Cushing's death in 1994.
Peter Wilton Cushing was born on May 26, 1913 in Kenley, in Surrey, England. The son of George and Nellie Cushing, he was the youngest of three boys. His father worked as a quantity surveyor. Cushing worked in the same field as his father, as a surveyor's assistant before he became an actor.
Cushing caught the acting bug after watching his aunt perform in live theater. Cushing applied for and won a scholarship to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. His career began in 1935 with four years performing with the Worthington Repertory Company before heading out to Hollywood to try his luck in film.
Cushing was cast in bit roles, his first in James Whale's "The Man in the Iron Mask" in 1939. Other small roles included the 1940 film "A Chump at Oxford," starring the comedy team, Laurel and Hardy. In 1941, Cushing made his way to Broadway in "The Seventh Trumpet."
Cushing returned to England and joined the Entertainment National Service Association which provided entertainment to British troops during World War II. He married actress Helen Beck, who co-starred with him in Noel Coward's "Private Lives," in 1943. The two were married up until her death in 1971.

In 1948, Cushing toured with Lawrence Olivier's Old Vic theater company and landed a role in Olivier's 1948 film version of Shakespeare's "Hamlet." Cushing first met Christopher Lee on the set of "Hamlet." Lee had a bit part and Cushing was cast in a minor role.
In 1952, Cushing got the part of Mr. Darcy in a 1954 BBC production of"Pride and Prejudice." He won a BAFTA award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Winston Smith in a BBC adaptation of George Orwell's dystopian classic "Nineteen Eighty-Four."
Cushing's debut with Hammer Films as well as his first co-starring role opposite Christopher Lee was not in "Dracula" but in 1956's "Frankenstein," playing Victor Frankenstein with Lee as the monster. The two would team up to thrill and chill audiences again in Hammer's 1958 production of "Dracula." Cushing's tough, tenacious Van Helsing and Lee's larger than life Count Dracula were a dynamic on screen duo. The two were also close friends in real life. Both Cushing and Lee had an appreciation for ... Warner Bros. cartoons.
Cushing went on to star in many more feature films. He reprised his role as Baron Frankenstein four times and as Van Helsing only once in 1960's "Brides of Dracula." He also portrayed master sleuth Sherlock Holmes in many films - Hammer's 1959 adaptation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Hound of the Baskervilles" and in many BBC adaptations during the 60's.
Cushing's roles outside of horror included playing a priest in a thriller "Violent Playground" in 1958 and a bank manager in 1961's "Cash on Demand." He also played Dr. Who on British TV in 1965's "Dr. Who and the Daleks" and "Daleks - Invasion Earth 2150" in 1966. Cushing's other horror features include: "The Gorgon" (1964), "The Skull" (1965) and "Blood Beast Terror" (1967).

Cushing continued working in the horror genre throughout the 1970's. He played opposite his friend Christopher Lee in "Dracula A.D. 1972" (1972), "The Satanic Rites of Dracula"(1973) and "Horror Express" (1973). He would go on to appear in a series of unremarkable movies such as the kung fu/horror movie "The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires" (1974) and "Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell" (1974). In 1977, Cushing landed a role in the surprise blockbuster, "Star Wars," as Grand Moff Tarkin. Cushing was originally considered for the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
During the 1980's Cushing took less roles after being diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1982. He broadened his acting horizons with appearances in two slapstick comedies, "Top Secret!" and "Airplane" in 1980. He once again played Sherlock Holmes in 1984's "The Masks of Death."
Cushing retired from acting during the late 1980's and published "Past Forgetting: Memoirs of the Hammer Years" in 1988. In 1989, Cushing was honored by being made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. A week after filming his final project and his last appearance on-screen with Christopher Lee, Cushing passed away on August 11, 1994. He was 81.

pandora hearts and fenris for the ask meme!~
PANDORA HEARTS
Favorite character: ugh it’s SO HARD, but I’ll go with the Main Trio, because they are soft and give me warm feelings! I love how all of them are struggling with memory loss and trauma, and how differently they fight it. They aren’t perfect, but they mean so much. Honorable mentions are Vincent and Lacie, far more problematic characters. but also the ones I relate to the most in some weird way.
Least Favorite character: Idk, like, Miranda? I still don’t get why she wanted Oswald’s head?? was she just real crazy??? that it?????
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Oswald/Jack (husbands!), Elliot/Leo (boyfriends!!), Oz/Gilbert (lovers... not in the part where Oz is 15 though. I’m generally keeping an opinion that Oz is an eldritch bunny monster so age doesn’t matter that much in his case, but before he regains his memories even he doesn’t know that. Gilbert definitely doesn’t, and he’d never go for it with a 15yo), Break/Reim (soft!!) aaaand, ugh, Ada/Vanessa (softer!!!!)
Character I find most attractive: ♥Lacie♥ And then after Lacie... Fang!!! Don’t @ me, he’s big and gentle and wields a giant sword, I don’t ask for much in a man. (but also Lacie is like, holy shit, the whole new lvl)
Character I would marry: honestly, Lacie would make a great wife for me because she doesn’t like to be controlled and I don’t like controlling people! This union would probably fuck up my sleep schedule and impulse control, but I’m willing to give it up.  Lacie looks like someone you can just... enjoy the world with, together. Isn’t it a thing to live for?
Character I would be best friends with: probably, like, Lotti? (she’s really cool and we would gossip and bitch about every single one of people we know)
a random thought: well it’s about Lacie again: I think it’s funny how the manga builds her up. By the time she actually shows up she’s, like, a legend. A secret. A mystery. And it makes her great, but it also kinda fucks her character over (I think it was to keep the mystery and panache that author gave her so many contradictory actions, like developing an empathetic relationship with the formless core of the abyss, but then having her rip human into pieces without second thought and dancing in bloody rain)
An unpopular opinion: Victorian England aestetic? ...way overrated. I know I was all over this shit when I was 13 but now, ugh
My Canon OTP: Jack/Oswald, Elliot/Leo... jokes aside, canon pairings are kinda eh
My Non-canon OTP: look above but also specifically post-canon Gil/Oz/Alice. They have such a great dynamic, I swear, and just re-imagining them in more modern times is so much fuuuun
Most Badass Character: Gilbert.
Most Epic Villain: Jack (Juries were pretty rad too, esp. theme-wise, but Jack’s betrayal was just so visceral)
Pairing I am not a fan of: Break/Sharon
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): the female ones :) (like I’m sorry to say it because a lot of female characters are powerful and cool and have great potential, but their arks just fall flat next to the male character arks. the only exceptions I can think of are Alice and Echo)
Favourite Friendship: Gil and Oz and Alice! But also entire Baskerville family!
Character I most identify with: probably Alice? I too can be pretty rude and aggressive and absent, but also I’m really emotionally intelligent and honest? I was surprised to recognize this in her, too, but also pleased
Character I wish I could be: Rufus Barma. Reading books... Pretending he’s a weird baloon man... Pining after a more successful woman for decades... dude’s living the life!
Now FENRIS (but I’ll try to keep it short!)
How I feel about this character: he’s great! I think he stands for very important topics, my fave being relationship to the kind of people who traumatized you. Not, like, the person, but the people. This extrapolation happens a lot in real life, and I don’t see it addressed enough in media? I also like that his personal ark (best case scenario) doesn’t end in just learning to see a person beyond just being a mage or not, or just in a death of his former master, or in acceptance of mages as a whole. He actually goes and fights the problematic people. Physically. What an icon!
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: mostly just Hawke
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: w Isabella! I don’t think they can really develop romantic thing, but their friendship (even with benefits) is so sweet!
My unpopular opinion about this character: ...I honestly don’t know what’s popular, and feel like a grandma about it
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: better relationship with Anders, duh. Like, I know I just said his hatred for mages is kinda cool narrative-wise. But hanging out with someone for 6 years and not being able to empathize with them even a little? really? it just paints them both as really unreasonable. also the constant bickering is kinda annoying.
Favorite friendship for this character: Bella! but also, you know, the whole Hawke-crew is one big family and I live for that
My crossover ship: none

Christopher Lee and Vincent Price were both born on the 27th of May (albeit in 1922 and 1911 respectively), with fellow horror icon Peter Cushing being born on 26 May 1913.
The three actors were friends or decades, with the three appearing together in Scream and Scream Again (1970) and House of the Long Shadows (1983).
Bonus Fact! Price allegedly said towards the end of his life, one of his favourite roles was that of Professor Ratigan, the Moriarty homage in Disney’s Great Mouse Detective film, partly because they had written two songs for him.
Keeping with the Holmesian vein, Christopher Lee himself played Sherlock Holmes multple times (as well as Mycroft Holmes and Sir Henry Baskerville opposite Cushing’s Holmes), while Cushing played Holmes some 18 or so times on tv and in films (and one time played Arthur Conan Doyle).
