UP Pride 2017 celebrates love and equality

UP Diliman held its 10th Pride March with the theme “We love equality!”

The pride march welcomed everyone who wanted to take part in the movement. Rainbow flags, rainbow banners, and a huge rainbow arch greeted attendees as they entered the campus.

Its goal was to assert that there should be safe spaces for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) community and to campaign for love and acceptance, and inclusion and diversity for everyone.

“Ganon naman yung idea ng LGBT [community], especially since we promote the idea of diversity based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression (This is the idea of LGBT [community], especially since we promote the idea of diversity based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression),” Punong Babaylan Vince Liban said in an exclusive interview with The Fourth.

UP Babaylan is an advocacy student organization that supports the LGBT community. Its members are responsible for the annual event. This year marked the group’s silver anniversary.

Nicholas Sia, External Public Relations Officer of UST Hiraya, the first Intersectional Feminist Organization in the University of Santo Tomas, persuaded the LGBT community that they should be always proud of who they are: “’Wag kayong mahiya kasi hindi kayo nagiisa. Marami tayong nandidito [na handang] samahan kay,” (Fret not for you are not alone. There are a lot of us who are willing to come with you.)

UP Babaylan calls for ADB passage

“We want the ADB to be passed. For 18 years it [has] been pending in [the] Congress, and I think it’s time that we campaign for it outright,” Liban said.

The Anti-Discrimination Bill (ADB) which seeks to protect the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) against discrimination and hate assaults was filed by Dinagat Islands Representative Kaka Bag-ao. It was passed by the Congress on its second reading on September 14. And was later on passed on its third and final House reading on September 20.

Liban also added that this year had the most number of attendees compared to the previous years that UP Babaylan has organized for Pride.

The first UP Pride was held in 2008 with around 25 members who marched inside the campus. It was only last year when it has become an official event of UP.

ERASURE (Andy Bell and Vince Clarke) have announced a collaboration with Echo Collective, the Brussels based collective of post-classical musicians best known for their ongoing collaborative work with A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Johann Johannsson, Dustin O’Halloran and Stars of the Lid.

The collaboration sees the entirety of Erasure’s latest album, World Be Gone, given a post-classical rework. World Beyond was recorded over ten days by Andy Bell and seven performers from the Echo Collective: Margaret Hermant (violin, harp), Neil Leiter (viola), Thomas Engelen (cello), Jaroslaw Mroz (double bass), Gary De Cart (piano) and Antoine Dandoy (vibraphone, glockenspiel). The album was produced by Echo Collective, mixed by Gareth Jones and arranged by the Echo Collective’s Gary De Cart, Margaret Hermant and Neil Leiter. Neil Leiter from the Echo Collective explains, “The process of this project was really deconstruction and re-purposing.

We started by listening to each track layer by layer, and then, using the layers that inspired us or we found essential, we reconstructed the tracks instrumentally. Each of the instruments in the band setup was chosen for their inherent capacities and roles. Often choosing which layer to put with each instrument was a question of matching roles and colours. By stripping so much away, we were able to find a new space for Andy to fill. The text of the songs became much more important in the overall construction of the songs, and Andy was free to explore more dynamics and vocal range.” The tracks featured on World Beyond show award-winning songwriters Vince Clarke and Andy Bell in a more reflective mood, giving the world and recent political upheavals a thoughtful examination. This new collaboration gives a new dimension to the tracks - including fan-favourites ‘Still It’s Not Over’, which tackles the LGBT rights movement post- Stonewall, and ‘Lousy Some Of Nothing’, a ballad for our post-truth age - but the band’s optimism about the future remains clear and bright. Andy Bell explains: “…the reinterpretations have brought such enormous context to the songs, it has created a new place for them.”

The original idea for the album developed by Vince Clarke, who initially suggested that a single from World Be Gone could be given an orchestral reinterpretation but as the idea expanded and took shape, he spoke at length to the Echo Collective ahead of the recording. “It was great to talk through ideas with Echo Collective and then see how their arrangements took shape. The collaboration has given elements of the album a whole new feel and Andy’s vocals remain as powerful and uplifting as ever” says Clarke. The collaboration is a natural progression from 1987’s The Two Ring Circus, a companion EP for the band’s second album, The Circus, which included several orchestral interpretations.

Pro-LGBTQIA+ and youth groups pressure Senate leaders to pass SOGIE Equality Bill

The ‘Yes to Equality, G for SOGIE’ campaign underscored the pressure for Senate President Vicente Sotto III and Majority Floor Leader Miguel Zubiri to stop delaying the passage of the said bill.

With several delays in the passing of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity or Expression (SOGIE) Equality Bill in the Senate, the De La Salle University-University Student Government (DLSU-USG) gathered pro-LGBTQIA+ groups, youth groups, and student councils from Metro Manila schools yesterday, May 25, to show a collective stand towards the bill’s actualization.

The ‘Yes to Equality, G for SOGIE’ event, held at the Cory Aquino Democratic Space in DLSU Manila, followed up the previous SOGIE rallies last March and the unanimous decision (197-0) of the House of Representatives to pass the SOGIE Equality bill on its third and final reading in September 2017.

Benildean leaders show support for SOGIE bill

Prior to the event, the Benilde Central Student Government (CSG) released a statement last Thursday, May 24, on their Facebook page stating they continue to support the passage of the SOGIE bill.

“As Benilde Central Student Government continues to stand on the forefront of supporting Gender Equality and Anti Discrimination, we are one with our LGBTQIA+ brothers and sisters from all over the nation in fighting for the SOGIE Equality Bill as it is currently on its final stage of processing in the Legislative branch of OUR government,” the statement, which also invited the Benildean community to join the SOGIE event, read.

Meanwhile, during his speech in the SOGIE event at DLSU Manila, Benilde CSG President Hansel Del Rosario urged the youth to take action for the passage of the bill.

“As the next generation of Filipinos, us, the youth, must take the lead the fight against discrimination and we must hold our leaders accountable for it,” Del Rosario said.

The Benilde CSG President also reiterated that the fight does not stop inside the campuses, saying “As the youth, we can always do something to fight discrimination, not just in the four corners of our campus but also outside, externally, and of course immerse ourselves in the different society we have.”

He then concluded his speech with a message to Senators Vicente Sotto III and Miguel Zubiri, saying the youth will keep a close eye on their movements in the actualization of the bill.

“We are closely watching you. Now is the time to end the plight of the LGBT community and be one with us and fight for our right and fight for what we want because we are people, we are the Filipino people, we are part of the nation that you are serving,” he said.

On the other hand, Benilde Hive (BHIVE) President Dominique Pangantihon represented the first and only accredited LGBTQIA+ organization in the Lasallian System.

“As responsible citizens of our country, we really need to uphold and put into importance social responsibility and, of course, what better way to do that than to push for a bill that ends discrimination on the LGBTQ+ [community]. We need to push for a bill that ends hatred so that we can live in a society that is peaceful for all and also inclusive for the LGBTQ+ community,” Pangantihon said.

Meanwhile, according to DLSU-USG’s press release, University of the Philippines (UP) Babaylan’s Punong Babaylan Vince Liban stated the LGBTQIA+ community is still not being protected by the law from discrimination, and that the delay in the passage of the bill is a denial of human rights. With this, he hopes Sotto and Zubiri will listen to the plight of the Filipino LGBTQIA+ and stop the delay in the passage of the SOGIE bill.

As per DLSU-USG’s press release, an estimated 500 students and LGBTQIA+ supporters attended the said event, including representatives from Benilde CSG, BHIVE, DLSU-USG, UP Diliman College of Social Sciences and Philosophy Student Council, University of Santo Tomas (UST) Hiraya, and Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) KASARIANLAN, among others.
