Seychelles

By a stroke of fate, we managed to get a layover in the Seychelles for a couple days on our way from Johannesburg to Muscat. The sun soaked island of Mahé was ridiculously beautiful everywhere we went. It seems like it would be the perfect honeymoon location!

Highlights 

-Anse Soleil- This beach was gorgeous. Cautious of not getting our belongings stolen (we were warned by a policewoman not to leave our stuff unattended), we went swimming one at a time. We made a couple of dog friends who came and laid down by our towels. 

-Anse Major- We hiked about an hour in  to reach this beach (only reachable by hiking for by boat). It was stunning and pretty much a private beach for us since no one else was there for the first hour. Then some bougie rich people showed up on their private yacht and were delivered to the shore by a smaller boat. When hiking back, we encountered lots of other hikers, so seems like going early paid off.

-Morne Blanc- This was a challenging 45 minute hike up to the top of the mountain, but it was totally worth it for the awesome views.

-Victoria- The main town on Mahé Island, Victoria is charming but quite touristy. It’s very walkable so it’s a good spot to hang out for an afternoon. They also have a mini Big Ben replica.

-Watching the sunset near our guesthouse- We got up early one morning to watch the sun come up. It was cloudy but still got some great shots!

Bummers

-The heat- I couldn’t handle it unless we were by the ocean and I could jump in whenever I wanted.

Eats

Overall, the food was not remarkable and on the pricey side in the Seychelles. There were a couple of good meals though:

-Creole food at the Captain’s Villa- We had fried fish, bread fruit (tastes like French fries), a sausage and rice Creole dish, and fried bananas for dessert.

-Breizh Cafe- The food we had here (pizza and sandwiches) was pretty basic but affordable so we went there twice. The sandwiches were gigantic and covered in fries. 

-Maria’s Hot Rock Cafe- You choose what kind of meat you want and then cook it yourself at your table on a piping hot rock. This was a really neat eating experience.

Drinks

-Guinness- Apparently they produce it in the Seychelles too.

-Savanna Dark Cider- Another variation on the ubiquitous Savanna cider.

People

-Just the two of us! 

Observations and Insights

-Most likely to die by: accidentally running off the road- on the side of most of the roads is a deep ditch! 

-The Seychelles are expensive but nature is free and absolutely stunning! 

Tips

-Rent an automatic car- you’ll be glad you did on all the windy, hilly roads. It’s also an easy way to get yourself all over the island to explore. 

-Go explore other nearby islands if you have more than a couple days. 

-Go hiking earlier in the day to beat the heat and the crowds.

-You will sweat (a lot, if you’re me). Always a good idea to carry water and a mini deodorant around :)
