VIDEOVERSE Accessibility Review
VIDEOVERSE by Kinmoku is a real blast from the past. Anyone who was in the online forum community from the late 90's to the early 2000's will instantly recognize this particular era of the internet. Even those of us who weren't, like myself, can still find a lot of love and nostalgia. The game is filled to the brim with references and doggo cameos! Like many visual novels, the gameplay is simplistic and easy to understand. It tells a story about online communities, both the good and the bad. The main art style looks like old-school internet pages with a simple and clean UI. Not only that, it features some fantastic animated cutscenes for a fake rpg game and animation for online video chat segments! Clearly, this is a game made with love. When it comes to accessibility, VIDEOVERSE hits the three single most important accessible features a game in this genre requires: easy-to-see visuals (high contrast between backgrounds and text), a screen reader, and the ability to change to a dyslexic-friendly font. It also has a full content warning list. The list shows every applicable content warning via broad label, but you can click on each warning to see details. These details do contain spoilers, but it's nice to see that it lets you pick.
That's the key to accessibility: the more options you have, the more accessible it is.
VIDEOVERSE's accessibility doesn't end there. The game offers subtitles for sound effects, separate volume controls (sound, music, and voice), and the ability to type your replies instead of selecting them from a list. It even gives you several different "themes" from the start so that you can pick and choose which visuals are best for you. VIDEOVERSE isn't perfect though. It falls short in a few areas. The biggest issue is with flashing graphics. One of the fake internet ads is a fairly large box that flashes every time it runs. There's no way to turn this off or avoid the ad. It's rng if the ad will pop up. But seeing as there are only a handful of these fake internet ads for the game to choose from, you WILL see it. The desk pause screen also has a subtler flash in the background, but it's large enough that it bothered me. Finally, the ending segment has a full-screen glitch effect that includes flashing. It's a shame I can't turn these off or select altered versions of the effects. Other accessibility features I'd like to see is the ability to make a custom theme from the get go. It doesn't need to be anything in-depth, but the ability to choose which background and text colors work best for the player would be golden. I'd love to see a UI adjuster as well. Though the font is by no means small, some people have smaller screens or struggle to see and require larger fonts. Another place VIDEOVERSE falls short is controls. While the controls are simple and it does have two different options for controls, I'd like to see custom keybinding. This way players can adjust as needed to specialty controllers or simply more comfortable mapping. At the end of the day, I've enjoyed my time with VIDEOVERSE. It's a cute, well-crafted game that clearly had a lot of love put into it. If you're a fan of retro games and visual novels, this one will be a delight. The accessibility options are a great start, though I'd like to see a couple extra features or some currently implemented options in a more in-depth way.
VIDEOVERSE is available on Steam and Itch.io for PC, Mac, and Linux. It currently costs $12.99, €12,79, and £10.99. Thank you, Kinmoku for providing me with a review copy!

Review: Videoverse
Videoverse is game that managed to hit me with the force of a truck in various ways, from the more subtle things like the in-game community’s reaction to a collapsing world around them to the parts that were more upfront, like Emmett and Vivi’s budding relationship.

VIDEOVERSE overflowing with characters will debut soon
Tumblr media
VIDEOVERSE the visual novel game in a social network will release soon on Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. All this magic springs from the tireless dedication and brilliant creativity of Kinmoku. Coming very soon on Steam. Kinmoku, the folks who made One Night Stand, have been hard at work. They're about to drop their new experience they call VIDEOVERSE. Imagine you're stepping into a time machine, only instead of traveling to, say, the time of the dinosaurs, you're diving into an imaginary past of video gaming. We're talking about the kind of nostalgic journey that you'll want to tell your friends about. Now, this game is not just about playing. It's similar to hanging out with friends in a vibrant digital world. Due to swap fan art, and immerse yourself in a bustling gaming community. It's the kind of place where connections are forged, and where friendships start. This isn't some small, unheard-of thing either. The developers know their stuff, the critics, they're already singing praises. At the Indie Cup UK 23, VIDEOVERSE won the Critics' Choice Award. Which is like the Oscars, but for indie digital experiences. Plus, big-name platforms like Kotaku and Rock Paper Shotgun are also recommending the Demo on Steam (with native Linux).
VIDEOVERSE – Release Date Announcement Trailer
youtube
On August 7th, the full game experience will be unveiled during the Steam Visual Novel Fest. To make things even sweeter, there's going to be a launch discount. This announcement came with a fresh trailer, showing off an intriguing, haunting side of VIDEOVERSE. The voice you are hearing is Mark Takeshi Ota, who's worked on gems like LIVE A LIVE and The Great Ace Attorney. VIDEOVERSE takes inspiration from some of the best things about the early internet. Think MSN Messenger, early web forums, the technology from the 2000s, and even Miiverse. It's also paired with some chill music from Clark Aboud, who has worked on Slay the Spire and Kind Words. The world of VIDEOVERSE is also overflowing with characters to meet and stories to uncover. You can even personalize your journey by picking an avatar, crafting a personal quote, and choosing your favourite theme. Likewise, there's a virtual JRPG to dive into - Feudal Fantasy. You'll be joining Emmett. Doing so on his adventure as he tries to crack the secrets of this popular digital experience within the VIDEOVERSE. Join the Feudal Fantasy community, trade tips and theories, and find out if Hanzo can thwart the wicked Nobunaga. It's all in a day's play. Launching alongside Steam Visual Novel Fest with a 10% launch discount of the $12.99 USD / £10.99 / €12,79 price on Steam. Along with support for Linux, Atari VCS, Mac, and Windows PC. Release Date is August 7th, 2023.

Day 19: Videoverse
I can not begin to describe my love for this simple game. The artstyle is superb, every menu looks like something from windows 98 and it's all made to an absolutely gorgeous soundtrack. Words can not explain how good this game is. If you enjoy old computers and also enjoy games like Hypnospace Outlaw, this is a must play. Even if you don't, try it out.

a nyway. after a full day of gaming. more next fest thoughts but im leaving out the stinkers this time. i tried so many games and a lot of them were not good and i have removed them from my steam library so i ahve no record of them outside of the ones i named to hate on on my blog throughout the day. heres some ones i think are either just going to be good or at least have the potential to be fun
cuisineers design was a little frustrating but i didnt hate it despite me being very picky and haterly about both new roguelites and cutesy games. hopefully it improves with time because i don't think i'd play the full game without some changes but it does definitely have potential
vn quick fire: videoverse + penny larceny + cryspace seem interesting and ill be checking out their full releases
i already knew venba was going to be a game i was going to play when it coems out
FMV GAMES. 🎉🎉🎉🥳 i had some technical issues with the new markus ritter but hopefully that's resolved for the full release + i'll be looking at the first markus ritter game at some point bc it peaked my interest. isle tide hotel looks really good and interesting. will definitely be picking that up when it comes out, i was very immediately charmed by it. home safety hotline looks kind of dorky but i'll probably play it anyway. it did not seem like it's going to be a horror game that is actually capable of scaring me but that's okay. i guess.
deadlink: tora seems... fun-ish? though idk if i would say i conisder it a "good" game right now
corponation is a very obvious ripoff game but i do love to complete tasks. so it's hard to say if it;s good or bad.
the kindeman remedy i am of two minds about. mostly i think a game like this is dumb and doesn't need to exist but i didn't hate it when i tried it out
who could say what tomorrow slash this weekend will bring. maybe ill go throguh the way too many roguelikes ("""roguelikes""" im pretty sure theyre almost all roguelites but whatever) this fest and see if any of them that i haven't tried yet look like they're not total bullshit. or maybe i'll just play the games with guns and combat and stuff instead of rifling through the non-action games like i did today

VIDEOVERSE adventure upgrades gameplay even further
Tumblr media
VIDEOVERSE decision-based story adventure game for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Discover the unique brilliance of Kinmoku, the visionary developers who are reshaping the creative landscape. Available to play on both Steam and itch. VIDEOVERSE is an adventure game where you get to go on a unique journey and explore different places. Gameplay is special due to its look of old-school social gaming networks that were popular before. It's like a love letter to Miiverse and online message boards. Developer Kinmoku who is creating this game is also the same dev responsible for One Night Stand. They're really talented developers, and they recently released an updated demo of the game that can be downloaded for free. So Linux players can try it out before the full version later this year. In this updated VIDEOVERSE Linux demo, there are some changes and upgrades based on feedback from players. They added more options for customizing your character's appearance. So you can make your avatar look just the way you want. They also made some updates to the community features, which means you can interact with other players and see what they're up to. It's like being part of a big virtual world where you can meet new friends. One of the new features they added is chat animations. This means that when you talk to other players in VIDEOVERSE, you'll see animations that make the game more realistic. They also added a history log, which keeps track of all the things you've done in the game. It's a helpful feature if you want to remember something you did earlier.
VIDEOVERSE – First Gameplay Trailer
youtube
The VIDEOVERSE user interface, which is the way everything looks and works on the screen, has been improved too. They made it even better and easier to use, so you can navigate through the game without any trouble. The demo will be available for you to play until the full game releases. Which is due to take place later this year on Linux. So you have plenty of time to explore the game now. So, if you're into decision-based story adventure games and enjoy socializing with other players online, VIDEOVERSE is definitely a game you should check out. It's a fun and nostalgic experience that will take you back to the good old days of social gaming networks. Available to play on Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Check it out on Steam and itch.
