Ulysse Nardin prepared for the Only Watch Charity Auction a special version of the Ulysse Nardin Skeleton X. Since there is a piece unique and the chances to get it for a review are low, I thought it is the best opportunity to review the Skeleton X launched at SIHH 2019. This one is available on the market. Review Ulysse Nardin Skeleton X

The pieces presented in today’s review were launched during SIHH 2019. The collection featured four timepieces: satin finished titanium, a black DLC titanium, a rose gold version and a piece in the innovative Carbonium®. Today, I will present the last three versions. It seems I missed the opportunity to photograph the satin titanium piece.

Before going further with the wrist roll videos, I would like to present you the official launch video. I like it.

What strikes from the first look is the interesting construction of the Skeleton X. The watch is designed and built from the start as a super light structure. The result is part of painstaking handwork of cutting and hand finishing.

All watches have the same construction, with one small exception. The case of the Carbonium® is 43mm, instead of 42 as the metal versions.

A complex case

The Ulysse Nardin Skeleton X has a complex case. The design imposes difficulties in production: an increased amount of steps and longer machining time. The Carbonium® case is spectacular due to its appearance. The main role is played by the 7µm diameter carbon fibres. The production of this material requires high pressures and temperatures, still being 40% less harmful to the environment as the classic processes. This high-performance material is used in aeronautics. Due to technological and production reasons, the Carbonium® case is larger than the metal counterparts.

The crown bears the same attention to details as the case: a complex shape and construction and nice decoration. The grip is fantastic and the movement’s response to crown manipulations is great.

The open-worked dial

The dial of the Ulysse Nardin Skeleton X is beautiful visually and technically. The idea to use the movement components as dial and dial’s decoration is not new. But Ulysse Nardin does here a magical work.

I am impressed by the usage of the hour indexes as supporting bridges. The balanced construction integrates quite well the dial’s elements with the movement’s elements. The design makes the dial part of the movement and vice-versa.

The dial uses just two Roman numerals as indexes: the III and the IX. The rest of the three-dimensional indexes have luminescent material treatment. The one, five, seven and eleven o’clock indexes double as support bridges. A nice technical solution and a good-looking implementation.

The hands are skeletonized and partly filled with SuperLuminova. The legibility is OK. You can read the time easily but does not excel. Except in low light where the legibility is enhanced by the SuperLuminova.

Skeleton X has no hidden side or component. All is revealed in a multi-depth construction. The movement is nicely integrated as the dial decoration.

The movement

The Skeleton X is powered by the Calibre UN-371. The movement is based on the Ulysse Nardin Calibre 171. The hand-wound 3Hz calibre offers an impressive 96 hours of power reserve.

The back case of the Skeleton X Carbonium

The movement is nicely designed, quite symmetrically. The rectangular shape from the front of the watch can be found again on the back. It is unusual to find so many 90degrees angles in a watch movement.

The UN-371 uses a silicium balance wheel and escapement that brings a fresh touch to the gilded look. Note the skeletonisation and decoration of the barrel that can double as power reserve indication.

Final words

Ulysse Nardin Skeleton X is a spectacular watch. Initially launched in 2016 as the Skeleton Tourbillon, the watch was given more earthly dimensions (42, respectively 43 mm, from 45mm on the original tourbillon piece). The new design fits well on the wrist and the light materials make the wearing a bliss.

I also find the price pretty competitive, the titanium versions having half of the 2016 piece price. Some were not happy to see Ulysse Nardin getting rid of the tourbillon. I see it as an evolution. Creating new pieces, more affordable and still the same as complex technically (making abstraction of the tourbillon) is a technical evolution and a good marketing move.

If I could reduce my conclusion to only a few words I would say: “high-tech horological delight”. I find the titanium version practical, the rose gold version beautiful and the Carbonium piece spectacular. My choice of all three will be the black DLC titanium.

Why Bosch Is Used to Describe Everything from High Fashion to Heavy Metal

Search for a word in English that simultaneously means chaotic, hellish, and surreal, and you’ll likely come up short. It’s a shame: Difficult morning commutes, unpleasant crowds, and the contemporary political landscape could all use such an easy descriptor. In order to convey that very particular form of pandemonium, many writers over the past few years have ended up invoking the name of Hieronymus Bosch, the Netherlandish painter responsible for The Garden of Earthly Delights (1490–1500).

Journalists and critics are using the term “Bosch-like” or “Boschian” to describe printed menswear; Darren Aronofsky’s film Mother!; the Trump presidency; a fictional milieu; a Chinese animated film; an album cover; and Jacolby Satterwhite’s current exhibition at Gavin Brown’s Enterprise.

In a New York Times book review of Caitlin Macy’s novel Mrs., Alex Kuczynski writes: “No less horrifying are the rites surrounding entry into some of New York’s most exclusive private schools, a Boschian dreamscape of social posturing in which mothers judge one another by their coiffures, their chauffeured Escalades and their husbands’ net worth.” Here, the overextended adjective becomes approximately synonymous with “nightmarish.”

And “Boschian” transcends supposed divisions between high and low culture—it can be used to refer to both Manhattan’s feuding elites and to heavy metal music. A 2016 overview of Slayer’s 1986 record Reign of Blood describes the album as “bleak, relentless and inhuman, a Hieronymus Bosch painting brought to life for 28 writhing, screaming minutes. It sounded like nothing that had come before.” Here the writer highlights both the visceral anguish evident in Bosch’s work (which might have a sword slicing a man’s head off here, animals eating from another’s bloody stomach there) and its radical ingenuity.

While these examples suggest an agreed-upon understanding of the artist and his oeuvre, perceptions of Bosch and his work’s meaning have dramatically shifted over the past five centuries.

Hieronymus Bosch was born in the Netherlands around 1450 to a family of painters. Integrated into both religious and society life, he was a member of the Brotherhood of our Ladyship (a Catholic confraternity) and gained favor with court patrons. The Bosch Research and Conservation Project has attributed dozens of paintings and drawings to him, but The Garden of Earthly Delights triptych is his best-known masterpiece. Running from left to right, the panels depict Heaven, Earth, and Hell. In Heaven, God stands between Adam and Eve, while animals roam in their bucolic, idyllic setting. Earth resembles a proto-“Where’s Waldo,” crowded with humans dancing, swimming, riding animals both real and mythic, and suggestively cavorting (all the people throughout the painting are nude). Giant fish swim in the sky and lie on the grass while characters do handstands on the ground and atop giant, colorful orbs.

It’s really the Hell panel, however, that made Bosch’s reputation. Here, a massive knife blade protrudes from between two massive ears. A pig in a nun’s habit attempts to kiss a man’s cheek, while another man’s hollow body cavity merges with a tree. A bird-like creature appears to swallow a human whole, while crowds of naked bodies disappear into an ominous, red pool. The vision is dark, absurd, and violent.

Dr. Nils Büttner, author of Hieronymus Bosch: Visions and Nightmares, tells Artsy that the artist created the “prototype of everything we understand as Hell.” According to Büttner, “Other people came up with images of Hell, but nothing so fantastic.” Bosch’s Hell is so scary, he explains, because it’s filled with things we know, horrors to which we can relate: a burning house, a knife, insects.

Joseph Koerner, author of Bosch and Bruegel: From Enemy Painting to Everyday Life, echoes the sentiment. Bosch “seems to be expert at representing demons and various diabolical and questionable beings, creatures, phantoms,” he tells Artsy. Koerner suggests that Bosch’s style derived in part from illuminated manuscripts, though its origins remain mysterious.

The artist inspired generations of imitators who latched onto his hybrid figures, depictions of evil, and dream landscapes. Pieter Bruegel the Elder was the most revered of the group, pushing the aesthetic toward funnier, more worldly representations. “Instead of having, say, a Hell scene occupied by devils,” says Koerner, “you have a similar kind of composition—except it’s a scene of a village with children playing games. The weirdness of Bosch becomes the weirdness of human experience.”
