Excerpt:
“Before he revamped his farm Edalia supplied vegetables to about 20 people a month. Now he can supply about 250 families. With all this new produce to distribute, the American charity provided financial support to help him introduce a voucher system. Community mobilizers from the Human Needs Project identified vegetable vendors at strategic spots in Kibera, who collect vegetables from Edalia's farm and hand them out to eligible families who've obtained a voucher from the charity.
The World Food Programme and the Nairobi City County are official partners with the farm, too — plaques with their names are nailed to the corrugated metal walls” (Bwire).

How 6 Problem-Solvers Tackled Pandemic Challenges In Their Neighborhoods
Left: Urban farmer Victor Edalia (in white shirt) with three beneficiaries of his free veggies (left to right): Sheila Musimbi, a single mom; Celine Oinga, who comes from a family of 9 siblings; and Jackline Oyamo, jobless due to the pandemic. Right: Edalia uses modern urban farming methods, including this spiral planter that holds up to 100 seedlings. Photo: THOMAS BWIRE
In April, Jackline Oyamo, 31, was laid off from her job as an electronic sales assistant at a shop in Kibera, one of the world’s largest slums on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. The curfews to control the pandemic meant fewer customers – and staff cutbacks. “After losing my job, it was extremely difficult to keep feeding myself after I exhausted my small savings,” she says.
But Oyamo is able to get fresh produce for free from Victor Edalia, a 30-year-old urban farmer in her neighborhood. Last November, Edalia, who works as a driver by day, converted a trash dump site in the slum into an urban garden. He signed an agreement with a local chief to use the land. Now, the plot, about a quarter of an acre, grows vegetables such as kale, onions and spinach.
Edalia originally started the farm to boost his income. The idea was to sell vegetables to hotels. But once the pandemic hit, he changed the plan. He wanted to find a way to “give back,” he says.

Tottenham news: Should England captain Kane be part of a campaign to encourage betting in Kenya?
In Mbagathi Way, Nairobi, Kenyans wandered past a huge billboard promising a 200 percent bonus for an introduction bet for a prestigious gambling company.
And smiling from the poster is the English captain Harry Kane
Kenyan captain Victor Wanyama and fellow Spurs teammates From Him Alli and Toby Alderweireld. And next to the company's logo, 1XBET, is the historic logo of Tottenham Hotspur.
This is the huge billboard that Tottenham star players used to do 1XBET to promote in Nairobi
Under the words & # 39; African gambling partner & # 39; underlines the official nature of this approval, in a country where the rise of gambling among young people has led a minister to link gambling to suicides among young people.
As such, it may seem illogical to see the English captain in a gambling ad, not least for 1XBET, a company whose license has been suspended in Kenya.
After all, this week the Football Association accused Everton & Yerry Mina of a breach of regulations for appearing in a gambling ad in Colombia.
The FA has strict rules for players and managers who appear in gambling advertisements: it is forbidden if it is a personal deal.
Yerry Mina (center) was charged with misconduct for appearing in a Colombian gambling ad
However, there is a loophole. If the club has a deal with a gambling company, they can use the images of players in advertisements. So what is wrong for the players as individuals is not wrong for the clubs. Mine could have used Everton in a gambling ad and that would be fine. It was the fact that he hit his own deal that is wrong.
It seems like an anomaly. Labor deputy leader Tom Watson sees it as such. & # 39; Rules on gambling sponsorship deals must be consistent for clubs and individual players & # 39 ;, he said.
& # 39; Given the levels of gambling addiction in the UK and Kenya, it is time to make the gambling advertising and sponsorship rules much stricter. Fans are bombarded with gambling advertisements and that is not true. & # 39;
The players themselves have little control over these ads. They sign a certain amount of commercial activity when they agree their club contracts.
The deals usually mean that their image can be used alongside club sponsors, but usually it should be with a group of players rather than individually, as is the case in the 1XBET ad. Kane's spokesman declined to comment extensively, except to point out that this is a club issue. Tottenham is not the only one. Every Premier League club has a sort of gambling partner and 10 have gambling companies as shirt sponsors.
Labor Deputy Tom Watson says it it is not correct that fans are bombarded with gambling advertisements
The FA is starting to act hard. Their rules have been rewritten to make it clear that even when promoting a club relationship, no one can appear in a video or audio clip that promotes gambling.
However, static images of players in advertisements are still fine. Watson would go further, with Labor proposing to ban all shirt sponsoring from gambling companies and all TV ads.
But the link with African gambling companies has become controversial. Liverpool and Chelsea have recently announced global partnerships with 1XBET. Everton and Championship side Hull are sponsored by SportPesa, one of the biggest players in Kenyan gambling.
Kenya is the largest, most developed market for African gambling because of the digitization and the mobile currency known as M-Pesa. And concerns about addiction among young people means that the government is in dispute with almost all gambling companies, especially about tax issues, which is why 1XBET has suspended its license.
Kenyan politician Fred Matiang & i, the Interior Minister, told Daily Nation newspaper: & We cannot be a gambling country. Many young people get frustrated when they fail to gamble and commit suicide. The number of cases is worryingly high.
& # 39; Rogue behavior in the gambling and lottery industry endangers the lives of our young people. just started and we will implement it, no matter what it takes, because young Kenyan lives are worth saving. & # 39;
Nelson Bwire controls the industry after becoming addicted, and sets up the Gaming Awareness Society of Kenya on.
He told Sportsmail : "There is gambling in Kenya and it has grown in a short time. It comes from something unknown to something that is now in everyone's mind."
& # 39; In Kenya, the most widespread hired to promote gambling. That's what made it so big. If you see celebrities involved in gambling, you will notice that they are successful people and endorse this product.
& # 39; And it gives the impression that I have to do it. I want to be like Harry Kane. Harry Kane is a 1XBET hero. Harry Kane is well known and the Premier League is the most watched football competition. Tottenham is one of the top teams and also attracts many fans and a lot of attention. & # 39;
Callum Wilson of Bournmouth is pictured here with the shirt sponsored by Mansion Bet
Only adults can use digital money in Kenya, so in theory children cannot bet. And although 1XBET has not responded to an opportunity to respond, they have not violated any rules and there is a good chance that their license will be renewed. Their advertisement has a reminder that it is illegal for young people up to 18 to bet. SportPesa has made it clear that it is socially responsible and complies with the law.
Tottenham said they will ask for reassurance on 1XBET. A spokesperson said: & # 39; We have contacted our partners to express our concerns and to ensure that they continue to work locally within the parameters of their spelling license and that marketing and advertising contain appropriate messages reminding people of age restrictions and encourage people I guess responsibly.
& # 39; Our partners have responded to let us know that they are conducting an investigation to establish the facts and will attend a meeting with the club's management. & # 39;
However, that will not stop questioning the wisdom of so many Premier League clubs that place their name on an industry that attracts so much negative attention in Africa.
And although the captain of England appears on billboards throughout Kenya, this does not stop politicians from pointing out the inconsistency of the FA rulebook.
Tottenham will meet them in the near future to get guarantees
