Space Shuttle Development, Phase B: North American Rockwell and General Dynamics B9U/NAR-161-B
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
North American and General Dynamics B9U / NAR-161-B proposed their final Phase B shuttle proposal on June 25, 1971.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The fully reusable 'B9U / NAR-161-B' configuration would now weigh 2,290t at liftoff vs. the Phase-A limit of 1,587t and the total estimated cost of the development project had doubled, to almost $10 billion. The thrust of the space shuttle main engines had to be increased from 1,850KN to 2,450KN. Part of the problem was the shuttle now would have to be a much more versatile and capable vehicle than originally anticipated, since the space station and the manned lunar/planetary program evaporated in 1970. Critics in Congress contended that it was 'a project searching for a mission.' As a result, the new space transportation system was instead increasingly being promoted as a low-cost 'space truck' for unmanned NASA & USAF satellites."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The North American Rockwell 'NAR-161-B' orbiter was designed for carrying a crew of two plus up to ten passengers in the forward crew module. Note the four deployable landing jet engines on top of the vehicle; NASA was planning to use modified F-15 or B-1B aircraft jet engines on some missions and for ferry flights from test sites or alternative landing fields. But the jets would be omitted for heavy-lift missions since the additional weight greatly reduced the shuttle's payload capability. The thermal protection system was based on silica tiles. The blended wing/body design was chosen for uniform load distribution. It would have produced a 2300-kilometer crossrange capability to satisfy USAF reentry requirements; North American also decided to replace the wingtip fins with a single vertical tail. The 2,450KN main engine thrust upgrade was motivated in part by the need to have a single engine-out abort capability. Analysis showed that the orbiter still would be able to return to the launch site after a single orbit in case one of its two main engines failed during ascent, but only if the engines were powerful enough. Unlike McDonnell-Douglas (who proposed to use RL-10s), North American favored a brand new oxygen/hydrogen 45KN-thrust orbital maneuvering system (OMS) engines. Three OMS engines would have been carried for orbit insertion, orbital changes and the de-orbit burn."
Tumblr media
"General Dynamics' final 'B9U' booster design differed considerably from the earlier straight-wing 'B8D' concept. The landing jets were moved from the nose back to the delta wing in order to reduce the launch drag & heating effects and to minimize the jet engine exhaust effects on stability, control and drag. General Dynamics felt the delta wing would provide better stability & control over the entire flight regime than the B8's straight wing. It would also create more room for the main landing gear and jet engine installation. The gross liftoff mass was 1,886.2t including a jet fuel load of 62.2t for the 850km flight back to the launch site. The high staging velocity (3300m/s) and altitude (73.8km) created some problems since the booster would have to be very large, require a relatively advanced thermal protection system and carry lots of jet fuel for the return flight. The contractors also examined downrange landing sites or in-flight propellant transfer in order to reduce the amount of booster jet fuel. NASA also seriously considered a proposal to use gaseous hydrogen rather than jet fuel since it would have saved thousands of kilograms, but decided against the idea in the end since it would have increased the technical risk."
Tumblr media
North American Rockwell Phase-B shuttle orbiter docks with modular space station.
"Payload capability (without landing jets): 29,484kg into a 185km 28.5 deg. Orbit; 18,144kg into a 185km 90 deg. polar orbit; 11,340kg into a 500km 55 deg. orbit with landing jets installed on orbiter and 20,411kg without landing engines.
Cost per mission: $100-200/lb. [1970 rates] or $950-$1900/kg in 1999. 75 missions/year max. Space station rescue mission capability within 48 hours of emergency call.

NASA Kennedy ground systems prepping hardware for Artemis II and beyond
Teams with NASA are gaining momentum as work progresses toward future lunar missions for the benefit of humanity as numerous flight hardware shipments from across the world arrived at the agency's Kennedy Space Center in Florida for the first crewed Artemis flight test and follow-on lunar missions. The skyline at Kennedy will soon see added structures as teams build up the ground systems needed to support them.
Crews are well underway with parallel preparations for the Artemis II flight, as well as buildup of NASA's mobile launcher 2 tower for use during the launch of the SLS (Space Launch System) Block 1B rocket, beginning with the Artemis IV mission. This version of NASA's rocket will use a more powerful upper stage to launch with crew and more cargo on lunar missions. Technicians have begun upper stage umbilical connections testing that will help supply fuel and other commodities to the rocket while at the launch pad.
In summer 2024, technicians from NASA and contractor Bechtel National, Inc. completed a milestone called jack and set, where the center's mega-mover, the crawler transporter, repositioned the initial steel base assembly for mobile launcher 2 from temporary construction shoring to its six permanent pedestals near the Kennedy's Vehicle Assembly Building.
"The NASA Bechtel mobile launcher 2 team is ahead of schedule and gaining momentum by the day," stated Darrell Foster, ground systems integration manager, NASA's Exploration Ground Systems Program at NASA Kennedy. "In parallel to all of the progress at our main build site, the remaining tower modules are assembled and outfitted at a second construction site on center."
As construction of the mobile launcher 2's base continues, the assembly operations shift into integration of the modules that will make up the tower. In mid-October 2024, crews completed installation of the chair, named for its resemblance to a giant seat. The chair serves as the interface between the base deck and the vertical modules which are the components that will make up the tower, and stands at 80-feet-tall.
In December 2024, teams completed the rig and set Module 4 operation where the first of a total of seven 40-foot-tall modules was stacked on top of the chair. Becthel crews rigged the module to a heavy lift crane, raised the module more than 150-feet, and secured the four corners to the tower chair. Once complete, the entire mobile launcher structure will reach a height of nearly 400 feet—approximately the length of four Olympic-sized swimming pools placed end-to-end.
On the opposite side of the center, test teams at the Launch Equipment Test Facility are testing the new umbilical interfaces, which will be located on mobile launcher 2, that will be needed to support the new SLS Block 1B Exploration Upper Stage. The umbilicals are connecting lines that provide fuel, oxidizer, pneumatic pressure, instrumentation, and electrical connections from the mobile launcher to the upper stage and other elements of SLS and NASA's Orion spacecraft.
"All ambient temperature testing has been successfully completed and the team is now beginning cryogenic testing, where liquid nitrogen and liquid hydrogen will flow through the umbilicals to verify acceptable performance," stated Kevin Jumper, lab manager, NASA Launch Equipment Test Facility at Kennedy. "The Exploration Upper Stage umbilical team has made significant progress on check-out and verification testing of the mobile launcher 2 umbilicals."
The testing includes extension and retraction of the Exploration Upper Stage umbilical arms that will be installed on mobile launcher 2. The test team remotely triggers the umbilical arms to retract, ensuring the ground and flight umbilical plates separate as expected, simulating the operation that will be performed at lift off.

Market Drivers -
The rise in construction activities is expected to propel the growth of the vertical mast lift market going forward. Construction activities encompass planning, executing, and completing projects to construct or renovate buildings, infrastructure, and facilities. The rise in construction activities is often due to a strong economy, growing populations, increasing public infrastructure projects by the government, and expansion of real estate. Vertical mast lifts are versatile tools widely used in construction activities due to their compact design, ease of mobility, and ability to provide safe access to elevated work areas. Their ability to enhance safety, mobility, and efficiency makes them an invaluable tool on construction sites. For instance, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), a UK-based non-ministerial department, annual new construction orders surged by 11.4% in 2022 compared to 2021, marking a historic peak of £80.837 billion ($102.16 billion). Therefore, the rise in construction activities is driving the growth of the vertical mast lift market.
Market Trends -
Major companies operating in the vertical mast lift market are developing innovative products based on self-propelled, tracked aerial work platforms to enhance versatility and performance. The inclusion of self-propelled technology ensures ease of maneuverability, while the tracked platform offers superior traction and stability, making these lifts suitable for indoor and outdoor applications. For instance, in April 2024, Platform Basket, an Italy-based aerial lift manufacturing company, launched Spider 54T, an advanced version of its Heren 10 vertical mast lift at Intermat, designed for the French market. The Spider 54T is a high-tech aerial work platform for heavy-duty lifting and versatile operations. Its features make it suitable for various industries, including construction, infrastructure maintenance, telecommunications, and industry. The new Heron 10 SB, redesigned for the French market, has been simplified by removing the stabilization system, radio control, interchangeable battery, and winch from the original Heron 10 model.
